In this edition of Side Door at the Palladium, singer Bryan J. Hughes performed a tribute to Duke Ellington, featuring St. Petersburg-based bass player John Lamb, who played for Ellington in the 1960s. Also in the band, drummer Jean Bolduc, bassist Alejandro Arenas (from La Lucha and Orilla), and pianist John O’Leary (also from La Lucha). On horns, it’s James Suggs on trumpet, Mike Scaglione on sax, and Teddy Mulet on trombone.

On Friday, October 29, we shared music and conversation with pianist John O'Leary, who stopped by WUSF studios to talk to our Mike Cornette about his concert at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College. John, best known for his work with the group La Lucha, has a new album coming out on Arbors Records, featuring Snarky Puppy keyboardist Shaun Martin who both produced the album and played on it!

This month's Side Door at the Palladium series features a performance by trumpeter James Suggs. The concert was originally a live-stream-only broadcast that aired in October 2020. It was part of their "Palladium Live" series. The band features Jeremy Carter on saxophone backed by the jazz trio La Lucha, with Mark Feinman on drums, John O'Leary, keyboards, and Alejandro Arenas on bass. "Side Door at the Palladium" airs the first Friday of every month on WUSF as a special edition of our show, Jazz Club Friday.

On Friday, August 20, All Night Jazz aired a special edition of Jazz Club Friday with an in-studio performance and conversation with guitarist Nate Najar and singer Daniela Soledade. The pair talked with our Mike Cornette about their various projects, including Nate’s upcoming show, “Nate Najar’s Jazz Samba Celebration,” at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College on Friday August 27. Daniela discussed their recent trip to Brazil which resulted in a collaboration with the legendary guitarist and composer Roberto Menescal.

On Friday, August 6th, at 10:00 pm on WUSF, we aired another edition of our monthly series "Side Door at the Palladium," featuring music recorded at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College. This month we will air a show by Tampa-based singer Daniela Soledade featuring guitarist Nate Najar, in a concert recorded at the Palladium for a live stream performance on April 23, 2021. The band features Patrick Bettison (keyboards, harmonica and percussion); Joe Porter on bass; Jean Bolduc drums; Alvon Griffin on percussion; and Yves Dharamraj on cello. "Side Door at the Palladium" airs the first Friday of every month on WUSF as a special edition of our show, Jazz Club Friday.

Singer Synia Carroll and pianists John O'Leary stopped by WUSF studios for music and conversation with WUSF's Mike Cornette. Born in Spain, Kirei is a vocalist, composer, and arranger who now lives in Tampa. Her band consists of Dominic Walker on guitar, who helped Ona conceive the project (and is an All Night Jazz DJ!), along with Pablo Arencibia, piano; Alejandro Arenas, bass, and Jean Bolduc, drums. "Side Door at the Palladium" airs the first Friday of every month as a special edition of our Jazz Trip@Ten. Tune in this Friday at 10:00 p.m. on WUSF 89.7.

This month we feature the Nate Najar Trio performing, "From Europe with Love," featuring Nate Najar on guitar, Eddie Metz on drums and Alejandro Arenas on bass.The concert was recorded at The Palladium at St. Petersburg College in May of 2014, shortly after Nate had returned from a European tour. 

Kirei is a vocalist, composer, and arranger from Barcelona, Spain who is currently living and working in the Tampa Bay area.Her band, Iberian Project, consists of Pablo Arencibia, on piano, Alejandro Arenas, bass and Dave Rudolph on drums. Vocalist Whitney James is joined by trumpeter James Suggs and La Lucha (John O’Leary, Alejandro Arenas, and Mark Feinman) in our performance studio for live music and conversation with Mike Cornette in advance of their upcoming “James Meets James, Ballads and Blues” concert at the Palladium.

The members of the band, La Lucha, got to know one another at USF several years ago. The trio’s latest album, ‘Standards Not Standards,’ received airplay around the country and has been a favorite this year here at WUSF. They stop by All Night Jazz for a visit and performance. A concert recorded in the Side Door Café at the Palladium in St. Petersburg, FL. The concert was a tribute to jazz icon Miles Davis and was headlined by Tampa Bay trumpeter James Suggs. Joining James were tenor saxophonist Jeremy Carter, bassist Brandon Robertson, pianist John Richardson and drummer Jean Bolduc. Special guest Austin Vickrey also appeared on alto saxophone. In the episode host and producer Mike Cornette interviews Suggs and Palladium Executive Director Paul Wilborn. The concert was mixed by Connor Hawkins.
