A railroad replaced Harper's Ferry in the early 19th century. B & O railroad was soon built and first crossed the Potomac in the town of Harpers Ferry in 1839. The railroad was built for transportation to Winchester but was promptly destroyed during the civil war. Several railroad bridges were destroyed by natural disasters and rebuilt. On May 5, 2018 the NASA Mars Lander InSight was launched to explore the inner geography of Mars. Although meant to study the planet's core InSight captured the sounds of wind rushing across the Elysium Planitia using geographic sensors. While winds on Mars are a common occurrence this is the first time the winds of mars have been recorded. NASA utilized the lander's seismometer to capture vibrations from a solar array nearby. InSight's air pressure sensor was also used to record Mars' winds and it captured the higher frequencies of the sound. Because these sensors pick up such low frequencies the recordings had to be sped up by over 100x in order to be audible to the human ear. Since Mars' atmosphere is composed mostly of CO2 the atmosphere is thinner meaning the wind's soundwaves have less energy than on earth, despite wind speeds of 10-30mph. This sound uses the two sets of recordings to create a creative composite recording of what wind might sound like on mars. Low frequency waves rumble while higher frequencies rise and fall, dampened by the thin atmosphere. Because of the frequency response of this sound it may be useful for masking tinnitus or distracting sounds. Nasa released the first image of a black hole on April 10, 2019. This might leave you wondering, do black holes have a sound? It is often stated that there is no sound in deep space. This is true because sound requires a medium (like water or air) to vibrate through where it can then be interpreted by the human ear. Black holes, however, do create sound. In galaxy clusters a black hole will suck superheated gasses towards it, a portion of the gasses though are pushed away from the black hole in wave which creates a sound through the medium of the gasses. The sound was detected by Nasa via x-ray and translated into audio waveforms. The frequencies were originally 57 octaves below middle C on a piano. Interestingly black holes of different sizes all generate the same Bb resonace. This recording takes Nasa's audo clip (which compressed days into seconds) and slows it down to be closer to the actual sound of the black hole. Europa is the smallest of Jupiter's Galilean moons but it is the 6th largest moon in the solar system and only slightly smaller than Earth's moon. In space many planets and moons feature auroras, the most well known being the Northern Lights. These auroras are caused by electromagnetic changes from solar winds that bring charged particles into the atmosphere. The sound of Europa's auroras were recorded by NASA's Juno probe as electromagnetic data that was then interpreted as audio. By the window of an old manor strong gusts of wind blow raindrops forcefully onto the glass with a patter. Gaps in the house and windows create a strong rushing howl as a storm rages on outside.
