A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world. Produced by Niall Breslin and Aoife Plunkett.
The Science Of Stuck with Britt Frank
Do you ever find yourself feeling stuck? We can get lost in relationships, work, addiction issues, body struggles or other situations that leave us dealing with immense guilt and shame when we can’t shake ourselves out of it.
Niall is joined by Britt Frank, a neuropsychotherapist, teacher, trauma specialist and author of ‘The Science of Stuck’, a practical guide on the neuroscience of stuck-ness and how we can break free from the patterns that keep us there. Having experienced immense trauma as a child, Britt’s life has given her a unique perspective on how it impacts us psychologically and physiologically, which for her eventually led to meth addiction, time spent in a cult and a Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosis. Niall and Britt dive into the failings of our mental health systems in how they see and treat our symptoms without looking any deeper, the important messages this feeling of stuck can be trying to communicate and how sometimes the why isn’t as important as taking those small steps to get yourself moving again.

The Therapy Room - The Survivor Self with Dr. Tony Bates and Louize Carroll
As we grow from babies into adults we learn to adapt ourselves to fit the environment we’re in. If we grow up in a space where our needs are not met emotionally, we can develop what has been coined the ‘Survivor Self’ or the adaptive self.
Niall is joined by our resident expert psychologists, Dr. Tony Bates and Louize Carroll, as we step inside the therapy room to see how our survival self can come to hurt us later in life. These patterns of behaviour can come to harm our relationships, work life, health and sense of self, so it’s important we recognise this part of ourselves. Louize and Tony break down the complex and nuanced ways our survivor self develops, manifests and can wreak havoc in our relationships, and the tools they use to help their clients move out of these patterns to finally come home to themselves.

Hope Perches in the Soul with Hermitage Green's Dan Murphy
January can be a difficult month for a lot of people, but we must hold onto hope even in the longest and darkest days.
Niall is joined by Dan Murphy, lead singer of Irish band Hermitage Green. The band’s latest single ‘Younger Days’ comes with a profound and timely message about our current mental health crisis, something Dan has seen burgeoning in his own hometown of Limerick, which has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. Dan explains why now felt like the right time to address this topic in their music, and how the beautiful spoken word piece by Gregory David Roberts came to be. He and Niall also discuss the complexity of masculinity, how it’s leading men to the bridge of the River Shannon and why reconnecting with community and spirituality may be the thing that brings us back to hope.
This podcast discusses some difficult subjects, please take care when listening.

New Year, Same Me
As we take a slow approach to January Niall sits down to meander through his thoughts ahead of the new year.
After a health scare over Christmas, Niall reiterates his feelings on the ‘new year, new me’ b*llsh*t that gets thrown at us every January. Life isn’t a straight line and Niall shares how he navigated the intense emotions, the shift in perspective he stumbled upon in the process and why accepting change as the only certain thing in life can be very freeing.

Sober Curious Christmas with Kenneth Egan & Jennifer Hough
For some people it’s the most wonderful time of the year but for other’s Christmas can be a time of great overwhelm, stress or sadness. It’s also a time when we’re thrown into all sorts of festivities, Christmas parties and meet ups, 12 pubs and pints with your mates, which all tend to centre around alcohol.
Although all of these events can be fun, December can really highlight our culture’s complicated relationship with alcohol. Niall is joined by psychotherapist, Olympic medalist and recovery advocate Kenneth Egan, and Alcohol Action Ireland’s Head of Policy & Advocacy, Jennifer Hough, to shine a light on the toxic behaviours that have become so ingrained in society and to open your mind to exploring your own relationship with alcohol. Both Kenneth and Jennifer share their own experiences with alcohol harm but also explain the bigger forces at play in a country that often prioritises an economy over society, and the mental health issues that are often underlying in alcohol abuse.

Equality is the Best Policy with Minister Paschal Donohoe
In the last number of months we’ve been exploring how social and societal factors impact the little piece of meat between our ears. Our biggest question, and challenge, is to break down barriers with governance to create better systems for mental health and wellbeing.
Niall is joined by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, to ask what the missing links are when it comes to Ireland's governance and our collective wellbeing. They discuss why policies often feel like they prioritise economic growth over people, how inequality leads to social issues that are damaging on so many levels and Ireland's chance to be world leaders in better resourcing housing, healthcare and wellbeing for a healthier and happier society.

Rupture and Repair with Dr. Malie Coyne
Whether you’re a parent, guardian, teacher or anyone with children in your life, you have the power to do the work and build secure attachments that will support and bring safety to young people.
Raising children is probably the most difficult job you will ever do, and most people don’t want to pass on the pain they experienced in their own childhood. Niall is joined by one of Ireland’s top experts in child and adolescent mental health, Dr. Malie Coyne, who does immense work with children and parents. Growing up as an anxious child herself, Malie has an ability to see the pain of struggling children, and also support parents as they try to navigate the difficulties and worries of parenthood. Her advice is based around just being ‘good enough’ and drives away from the idea of perfection in parenting and our expectations on emotions and wellbeing. Malie believes ruptures are always going to happen, but it’s how we repair them that really counts.

The Therapy Room - Five Essential Elements of Well-Being with Dr. Tony Bates & Louize Carroll
If we are ever going to truly help people, we need to change the way we look at people’s wellbeing and mental health. Exercising, breathwork, yoga, self help books and even mindfulness are all great tools, but they are not going to be the fix when our whole foundation is in tatters.
We’re back in the Therapy Room with our expert psychologists Louize Carroll and Dr. Tony Bates, taking a look at Gallup’s ‘Five Essential Elements of Well-Being’.
These are career, social, financial, physical and community, and Tony and Louize break down why these foundational elements of our existence are vital and how when they’re not met people can end up in the therapy room thinking they are the problem. Social forces have so much influence on us and are often completely out of our control, but there are some small steps we can take to steady ourselves amongst the chaos.

The Whistleblower Live Podcast With Davin Godfrey
Where is My Mind? has been on a tour of Ireland over the last number of weeks and we promised we'd bring you some of our most moving conversations from the road.
We have spoken many times about the harrowing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) report that came out earlier this year and how detrimental some of the treatment has been to children and young people. When Niall took the podcast to a stage in Listowel, Co. Kerry he knew he wanted to speak to local man Davin Godfrey, who has been one of the young people gravely affected by the services, having been put on six different types of medication at once despite no formal diagnosis. Davin is a wonderful young man and tells the story of how this impacted his life, the reason behind him waiving his anonymity and why we can't let this happen to any child or person ever again.
This episode touches on some difficult subjects, take care when listening.

Poor with Katriona O'Sullivan
We live in an unequal society, one that doesn’t support or protect our most vulnerable and marginalised people. We can have all of the mental health programmes and motivational talks we want, but if people’s most basic needs aren’t being met how can we expect them to survive, never mind thrive?
Niall is joined by Katriona O’Sullivan, a Doctor of Psychology and Senior Lecturer who grew up in deep poverty. Having endured abuse, addicted parents, a teenage pregnancy, homelessness and a society that told her she would never amount to anything, it was education that changed Katriona’s life. She explains how education opened her eyes to the inequalities in the world, why virtue signalling with poor people is just not good enough and what real, impactful ways we can begin to level the playing field and create real change for those living in poverty.

Break the Generational Cycle with Dr. Mariel Buqué
As we become more trauma-informed it is becoming clear that we are all impacted by things way outside of ourselves. Generational trauma is experienced through families, communities and collective experiences in the world, so how can we begin to unravel the pain that we carry?
Niall is joined by Dr. Mariel Buqué, psychologist, intergenerational trauma expert and author of upcoming book, ‘Break The Cycle’. Mariel came to working in this space through the experiences of her clients but soon realised it was also her lived reality within her own family. Despite the tough work and dark places it can take you, she decided it was time to break the cycle. Dr. Mariel shares how generational trauma impacts people biologically and psychologically, along with some ways we can begin to integrate healing into our lives and why she believes that it’s in the pain and the darkness that we find our way forward.
We tackle some difficult topics in this episode, so please take care when listening.

Dopamine Nation with Dr. Anna Lembke
Addiction is such a widespread issue in our society but many of us don’t realise it surpasses alcohol, drugs and gambling. How Could You Be Any Other Way? with Dr. Bruce Perry
We all know the digital media has had a profound impact on our lives, in some great ways and some terrible ways, but is it actually eroding some of the incredible skills that make us human?
This week Niall is joined by digital skills expert Graham Lee, who has just released his book ‘Human Being’. The book takes an insightful look into twelve human skills that are being challenged by the digital world and how our use of these skills has proved important throughout history. Niall and Graham discuss these twelve skills in depth, from navigation to conversation, art to dreams, and ask what future lies ahead of us if we don’t embrace our own autonomy and relationship with digital media.

Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy (With Guided Meditation)
‘We become so busy chasing a life that we ultimately end up missing living one.’
In this episode, Niall dives into one of the principles of practice of mindfulness that has been on his mind a lot recently. He also guides a short meditation on the subject.
The fast-pace of the modern world can be very overwhelming, and it can feel difficult to keep up sometimes. Especially when you have people on social media telling you they have a 5 to 9 routine before their 9 to 5, or that because you’re not giving 100% all of the time, you are an abject failure. It is very easy to fall into the trap of comparison and tell ourselves we are not enough.
This is why the mindfulness principle of non-judgement is so crucial, not just in judgement of others, but of ourselves.

Home Is Where The Start Is with Richard Hogan
Earlier this year, Ireland was left reeling after a damning report revealed the gaps and mistreatment in our child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) across the State. The report left parents and mental health professionals questioning what support is out there for children and young people who are struggling.
In this episode, Niall is joined by family psychotherapist and clinical director of the Therapy Institute, Richard Hogan. Richard has just released his new book, Home Is Where The Start Is, which offers innovative, proactive and practical strategies for dealing with a wide range of issues in the family, including excerpts of his own chaotic upbringing.
Niall and Richard discuss the failings of our mental health systems in supporting some of our most vulnerable members of society, the children, and how parents or caregivers can help them develop skills and mindsets to deal with the difficult experiences and feelings that come as part of life.

Acceptance of the Abnormal with Steven C. Hayes
This podcast aims to fight for better mental health systems for those who are struggling, and one thing that is blatantly clear in Niall’s PhD research is that our past and present models of care are not working.
What is a better solution? How can we support humans through the beauty and sh*t show of life in a compassionate and respectful way? Niall is joined by a paradigm-shifting therapist who has changed the therapy landscape, Steven C. Hayes. He is a clinical psychologist and creator of the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model that Niall himself has been through. Steven explains why he created ACT to fill the gaps he could see in how we were treating people, the unique principles that he believes are a better way forward and why we need to stop judging people based on what a dark history tells us is ‘normal’.

The Therapy Room - Weaponising Therapy Speak with Louize Carroll and Dr. Tony Bates
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
On this month’s episode of The Therapy Room we’re discussing the increasing use of therapy language such as gas-lighting, narcissism, boundaries and trauma in everyday conversations, and how they may be misused.
Recently, Jonah Hill was accused of using the term boundaries to manipulate his ex-girlfriend and control her behaviour, in alleged messages she shared to her Instagram. Our experts Louize Carroll and Dr. Tony Bates join us to discuss how damaging the abuse of therapy terms can be, breaking down what each term actually means and explaining how words have power, and we need to be aware of the language we use both inside and outside the therapy room.

Grey Area Drinking with Amanda Grace
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Across the world, and particularly in Ireland, many people have a complex relationship with alcohol. It’s a powerful substance and we can often underestimate the impact it is having on our relationships, our mind and our general wellbeing.
This week, Niall is joined by psychotherapist, educator and coach Amanda Grace. Amanda does not identify as an alcoholic, but in 2017 decided to pursue sobriety from her place of ‘grey area drinking’. Two years after the loss of her wonderful and hilarious Dad, comedian Brendan Grace, Amanda had a breakdown and almost relapsed. However, she has persevered and now openly shares her experience of grey area drinking and the devastating impact it can have on a person’s sense of dignity, self worth & their mental health.
Niall and Amanda discuss how affected they were by the news of Sinead O’Connor’s passing, how Amanda’s breakout of grey area drinking has changed her perspective on her self worth and relationships and how grieving her father alongside the public was both beautiful and difficult.

Polyvagal and Play with Michael Allison
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Our nervous system is like a safety alarm in our body, it helps us stay safe in situations of perceived danger. In the modern world, that system can be constantly activated, keeping us in a state of hypervigilance or shut down that can impact our daily lives. Polyvagal Theory, created and developed by Stephen Porges, PhD, gives us a better understanding of our autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve and how they impact our physiological and psychological states.
Niall is joined by Michael Allison, educational partner with Polyvagal Institute and creator of ‘The Play Zone’, which applies polyvagal theory to performance psychology. They discuss the basics of polyvagal theory, how are nervous systems interact with each other and how safety, connection and co-regulation are vital to a healthy human experience.

Healing Heroic Hearts With Jesse Gould
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
The landscape for treating complex trauma is changing, and although there is extensive and promising research into the efficacy of psychedelic substances for the treatment of mental health disorders, it is not yet accessible for most.
This week, Niall is joined by Jesse Gould, a former army ranger who is helping other veterans overcome their trauma. Jesse suffered with debilitating PTSD and after exploring every traditional avenue found himself in Peru on an Ayuhuasca retreat. The experience was transformational for Jesse. He returned home to set up the Heroic Hearts Project, with a mission to help as many US veterans as possible overcome PTSD and other military trauma by building a community that provides them with safe and supervised access to psychedelic programs, professional coaching, and ongoing community support.

Hold Back The River
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Niall has just completed his biggest challenge to date, kayaking the longest river in Ireland, the 300km River Shannon. Niall and some friends took on ‘The Rising’ as a fundraiser, to get the mental health programmes created by his charity A Lust For Life into every school in Ireland.
Although for a great cause, this gruelling challenge brought the team of kayakers to some vulnerable places, physically, mentally and emotionally. In this week’s podcast we hear from Niall at different stages across the 7 days and how he really leaned on his mindfulness toolkit throughout every moment of pain, sickness and tiredness to push through to the end. This journey is a true testament to Niall’s passion for passing these skills onto young people, helping them to understand their own minds.

Making Mental Health Literacy Accessible With Dr. Sharon Lambert
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Podcasting has made mental health and wellbeing information more accessible and understandable for listeners and a new study has proved that they can in fact improve mental health literacy.
The paper, published by psychologists from University College Cork, shows that access to information through podcasts has decreased stigma and increased help-seeking amongst listeners. Niall is joined by authors Dr. Sharon Lambert and Naoise Ó Caoilte to hear why this mental health literacy is so important and how we can utilise podcasting and other mediums as excellent supports for patients and therapists.

Live In Ballycotton With The Two Norries
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
On Sunday 4th of June Niall brought the Where Is My Mind? Podcast to the beautiful Ballycotton in East Cork. He couldn’t visit the Rebel County without speaking to two of the most profound voices on mental health and addiction, not just in Cork but in all of Ireland, The Two Norries.
James Leonard and Timmy Long are The Two Norries, an incredible duo from a disadvantaged part of North Cork. Both James and Timmy had a difficult start to life that led them down the road of crime, prison time, addiction and homelessness. They have now turned their lives around and use their podcast platform to share their own stories and the voices of others, and push for better awareness and systems for people who are struggling they way they did.
James and Timmy gives us an insight to their early lives, how that trauma followed them through life and what would have helped them while they were at their lowest.

Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this week’s episode Niall is going solo, talking about a new challenge he’s undertaking that’s very close to his heart.
Niall’s whole work is based around a passion to push for paradigm-shifting change in our mental health systems. This July he’s raising funds for his charity A Lust For Life, and the schools programme they’ve created to teach children to build resilience, increase wellbeing & enhance emotional literacy. Niall and some friends will be taking on the gruelling challenge of rowing the River Shannon in Ireland.
Niall explains the journey that led him to his research and advocacy work, why teaching kids about their emotions at an early age is so important and the systematic change we need to better support people through their mental health struggles.

The Therapy Room: Uncovering Addiction With Louize Carroll & Dr. Tony Bates
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Last week we had a fantastic reaction to our episode on addiction with Brian Pennie and Lynn Ruane. This week we’re back in The Therapy Room, asking our resident psychologists Louize Carroll and Dr. Tony Bates how they work with someone dealing with addiction.
Both Louize and Tony have extensive experience with addiction in all forms, from drugs to alcohol, food to work. They explain why we need to move away from the stereotypes and see addiction for what it is, a coping mechanism to deal with pain we cannot bear. Tony and Louize discuss how in the modern world addiction permeates all of us, how rules around dual diagnosis impact models of care and why we need to be wary of certain prescribed medications that only continue to numb our pain.

Addiction With Lynn Ruane And Brian Pennie
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Addiction is a topic we’ve wanted to cover for a long time on the podcast due to the complex relationship between mental health and addiction. Addiction rarely exists without some history of suffering and trauma.
Senator Lynn Ruane and Brian Pennie, PhD, are two leading powerhouses in the addiction space in Ireland. Both have had their own lived experience, growing up in drug and poverty ravished areas of Dublin, and advocate for better systems and supports for those experiencing addiction. The conversation is had through a social structures lens, as evidence suggests that focusing on the individual has not worked thus far. Lynn and Brian discuss how we still need to focus on destigmatising drug use and bringing humanity back to individuals, how poverty is the core issue destroying communities and what approaches they are advocating for to protect those in vulnerable positions.

Self-Actualisation With Scott Barry Kaufman
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
This week Niall is joined by cognitive scientist and humanistic psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman. Scott hosts The Psychology Podcast and is passionate about our innate potential as humans.
Scott’s latest book ‘Transcend’ is a reimagining of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and a new insight into living your most creative, fulfilled, and connected life. Niall and Scott share the same beliefs about human potential and discuss how there are many forms of intelligence that may not score well on your average IQ test. Scott also explains what it means to self-actualise, the impact the modern world and social media have on our potential and how purpose, fulfilment and connection are the drivers of our human experience.

Isolation To Openness with Mother Mindfulness Sharon Salzberg
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Mindfulness was introduced to the Western world by three young Americans in the 1970s, Joseph Goldstein, Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg, who would later go on to co-found The Insight Meditation Society.
On today’s podcast, Niall is joined by Sharon Salzberg, world-renowned teacher and inspiration in his own work. Sharon’s latest book ‘Real Life: The Journey from Isolation to Openness and Freedom’ shows us how we can recover from the emotional effects of crisis. Niall and Sharon discuss how society has changed in the wake of the pandemic, the shared consciousness of kindness that we so desperately need and their fears of the historic essence of mindfulness is being lost in the modern world.

Where Is My Mind? Live at the 3Olympia Theatre with U2's Adam Clayton
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
On Friday 28th April 2023, Niall took to the stage of Dublin’s iconic 3Olympia Theatre for the very first Where Is My Mind? live show.
On the night Niall was joined by Adam Clayton, bassist of one of the world’s most legendary rock bands, U2. If you’ve been here for a while you may remember Adam joining us on the podcast before for a very candid conversation about his own mental health and addiction. In this conversation they go deeper, getting to the depths of Adam’s experience of battling his mind, and how this pushed him to campaign for the change that both he and Niall are so passionate about.

Transforming Trauma Through Touch With Dr. Stephen Terrell
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
We often talk about trauma on this podcast but this week we’re looking at it from a different angle and exploring developmental trauma, what it looks like and the different approaches to healing.
Niall is joined by Dr. Stephen Terrell, psychotherapist and specialist in Developmental Trauma, Attachment and Adoption. It was in his experience as a clinician and single parent of two adopted sons that Stephen realised there needed to be a way to reach non-verbal, or early developmental trauma, without spoken language. He developed ‘Transforming Touch®’ and ‘Transforming the Experience-Based Brain: A Regulation-Based Approach to Working Developmental Trauma’. Niall and Stephen also discuss the impact of generational and collective trauma, the importance of presence in trauma therapy and both have some stuff come up for them in an incredibly vulnerable and powerful conversation. Take care when listening.

As I Am - Understanding Autism With Adam Harris
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
After a phenomenal response to our episode on ADHD with Dr. Colman Noctor, we wanted to continue the important conversation about neurodiversity and the life experiences of those affected.
In this week’s episode Niall is joined by Adam Harris, founder and CEO of AsIAm, Ireland’s national autism charity. Adam started AsIAm in 2014 based on his own experiences growing up as a young autistic person in Ireland and his frustration with the lack of understanding and barriers to inclusion. Adam speaks to Niall about what living with autism is like, how awareness has grown but we now need acceptance and understanding and what needs to change to create a universally inclusive society for all.

Our Morbidly Curious Minds With Coltan Scrivner & Muireann O'Connell
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Have you ever wondered why you’re so obsessed with true crime? Or why you love being absolutely scared sh*tless by the latest terrifying blockbuster? It’s because we all have this thing called morbid curiosity, a natural interest in the dark, unpleasant parts of life.
Niall is joined by Coltan Scrivner, a Research Scientist at the Recreational Fear Lab at Aarhus University who is carrying out pioneering research in the psychology of morbid curiosity. He is also joined by TV personality and dedicated true crime fan Muireann O’Connell, who tells us why she loves the genre but why she also had to take a break from it for a time last year. Niall speaks to both about why we’re so drawn to the darkness, how we can sometimes find it enjoyable and what we can learn from consuming real or fictional dangerous situations.
There are some sensitive topics discussed in this episode, so please take care.

Understanding ADHD With Dr. Colman Noctor
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
ADHD is a very prevalent topic in our society that’s driven by the attention war. In a world where people can self-diagnose through a Google search, it’s important that we understand exactly what ADHD is, how it can impact a person’s life and what resources are available for those struggling.
Niall is joined by Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytical Psychotherapist Dr. Colman Noctor. Colman works with ADHD cases everyday in his clinic and discusses how crucial the context of a child’s life is for diagnosis, why TikTok trends can be both helpful and damaging and what systematic change is needed to assess and support children and adults with ADHD, ADD and other mental health issues.

The Rest Revolution With Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Somewhere in the fast-paced chaos of the modern world we’ve forgotten how to sit on our arse and do nothing. Alpha-athletes, hustle culture and the corporate world tell us that we must constantly push ourselves, that time spent resting is time lost, but it’s left us in a vulnerable place, experiencing burnout and feeling like failures. This is why we need a radical Rest Revolution, because rest is crucial to our well-being and allows us to show up as our best selves.
Niall is joined by Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified physician and author of ‘Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity’. After suffering extreme burnout herself, Saundra discovered seven types of rest lacking in the lives of those she encounters in her clinical practice and research - physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory, social, creative, and the effects a deficit in any one of these can have on your health, happiness, relationships, creativity, and productivity.

If You're Going To San Francisco
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this episode Niall takes a trip to San Francisco, a place where many Irish people fled to during the Irish Famine in the 1800s, to meet with the Irish Immigration Pastoral Center. Immigration is a fraught subject in Ireland and across the world right now in the midst of the culture wars, but what is happening in the communities that have formed around those displaced from their home?
Niall speaks to those in the IIPC who are helping Irish people with support, integration and crisis management. He also takes a visit to the Men’s Shed in San Francisco and speaks to some of the Irish who have rebuilt their lives there. We hear some deeply personal and vulnerable stories from these men about their own struggles and the huge impact suicide has had on their community. Take care when listening.

The Architecture Of Stigma With Imogen Tyler
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this week’s episode Niall is holding a lens up to stigma, with a focus on mental health stigma. Although there has been positive change in how we see mental health thanks to awareness days and campaigns, we will never fully erode stigma at a personal, public or institutional level until we look at its origins.
Niall is joined by Professor of Sociology, Imogen Tyler, who is a passionate community activist, anti-poverty campaigner and author of ‘Stigma: The Machinery Of Inequality’. Niall and Imogen take a historical look at stigma and discuss what it is, who creates it and what purpose it serves in society.

The Mind Body Connection With Fabrice Gautier
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
Our mind and our body are inherently linked, but often when dealing with our mental wellbeing we forget to think about the body. This is what happened to Niall during his time playing professional rugby, years of repressed and internalised trauma manifested in injuries that ultimately ended his career. Now, when we talk about trauma there is a move towards a whole body approach, and a new lens on how stress impacts us both psychologically and physiologically.
Niall is joined by Fabrice Gautier, a physical therapist and osteopath who has worked with some of the world’s most elite athletes. Fabrice tells Niall how his own journey led to him to osteopathy and a passion for the mind-body connection, the tangible effects he sees in his patients when they release held onto emotion and trauma and why rest is one of the most important elements in recovery.

When Your Hero Dies By Suicide With Zak Williams
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
One of the most impactful moments in Niall’s childhood happened when one of his heroes, Kurt Cobain, died in 1994. An explosive reaction from a Christian brother in school, in a time when suicide was still a cardinal sin in Ireland, was the foundation of his mental health education and the reaction of society at the time created a personal stigma that took years of inner work to break down.
Although conversations are improving, the stigma around suicide still exists. Niall is joined by Zak Williams, mental health advocate and son of legendary actor Robin Williams, who shares his journey through the complex emotions of grief while the world is mourning alongside you, the toolkit he built for his own wellbeing after a PTSD diagnosis and what change he’s hoping to see in the world for how we treat those at their most vulnerable.

Flint, The Rock & Our Anxious Brain
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this week's episode, Niall is talking about the brain. Our brain has evolved to act as a defence system, an alarm that’s there to warn you and keep you alive, but in the modern world that system can be overstimulated. We are constantly surrounded by perceived threats that cause us anxiety and overwhelm.
Niall is joined by neuroscientist, psychologist and good friend Dr. Michael Keane to break this down for us. Taking us back to caveman times with two characters called Flint Eastwood and The Rock, they discuss how through natural selection we have all ended up with the anxious brain of Flint, how that brain operates in our modern world (think supermarket checkout panic attacks and an unhealthy addiction to our phones), but also why these automatic mechanisms are vital for protecting us and keeping us safe.

The Lost Boys
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this week's episode, Niall looks at a topic he’s wanted to explore for quite some time. Masculinity is a complex subject in today’s world, one that is often accompanied by words like ‘toxic’, ‘crisis’ or ‘fragile’, and that absolutely needs discussion when figures like Andrew Tate try to push a definition of what it means to ‘be a man’. Masculinity is indeed in a difficult place, but we need to look at WHY it’s in this place.
Niall asks why masculinity feels so lost in modern society, along with exploring his own relationship with it. However, the conversation is led in a different direction when he visits the Men’s Shed in Ballybrack, Dublin. If you’re unfamiliar with Men’s Shed, they are community projects where men can come together, share skills and form friendships, an environment that allows for meaningful, honest and vulnerable conversations just like this one.

An Atlantic State Of Mind
Welcome to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this week's episode, Niall is joined by friend and former rugby teammate Damian Browne, who recently became the first man to row across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Galway on the West of Ireland. An extreme adventurer, Damian (also known as Auld Stock) has spent his life consumed by a passion and purpose to pursue his human potential. Having spent 112 days alone in the vastness of an unforgiving ocean, Damian went on a physical, mental and emotional journey of endurance.
Although we may not all row oceans, there are challenges we face in life that require us to look inward, to find the place that's never been wounded. Niall speaks to Damian about tapping into that place, the darkness and the weeds you've to go through to get there and how a clear understanding of your values can be your north star, even when you feel completely rudderless.

Dancing With Edith
Welcome back to Where Is My Mind? A podcast about how we can better look after our heads and our hearts in the head-melty chaos of the modern world.
In this week's episode, Niall is joined by world-renowned psychologist and author of The Choice, Dr. Edith Eger, a holocaust survivor who's incredible story has inspired hope in millions of people. Edith was just sixteen when she was taken to the heinous death camp of Auschwitz, and experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. Her parents were sent to the gas chambers, and her first love Eric perished in the camp, but Edith’s bravery and spirit kept her and her sister alive. She always remembered what her mother had told her on their journey to the camp, "Just remember no one can take away from you what you put into your own mind."
Niall speaks to Edith about her story, the years it took her to process the trauma and how she's used her wisdom to help others. They also makes plans for Edith, a trained ballet dancer, to help Niall with his two left feet and teach him her famous high kick.
You'll also hear from our resident psychologist Louize Carroll, who's been hugely influenced by Edith in her own work.
