The Outline CEO Josh Topolsky: Online ads are stuck in the '90s (Recode Media with Peter Kafka)
Josh Topolsky, CEO and editor in chief of The Outline, talks with Recode's Peter Kafka about the importance of good internet-native design for both advertising and editorial content. Topolsky dismisses the idea that everything publishers put out will move behind paywalls, arguing instead that when ads are well done, they can engage readers and support free content. Most of the time, though, online media companies have forced boring ads on their audiences, who have learned to ignore them. He also talks about his past life as a music producer, picking a fight with Mike Bloomberg, and what it's like to raise money when you have a reputation as someone who can be difficult to work with.

There are some things that never go out of style. Coca-Cola. Martinis. Denim. Ray-bans. Kylie Minogue. The Cruise missile. Joshua Topolsky ranting about B-movies, condiments, and our broken society while Ryan makes references to reality shows nobody has seen.
So never fear, the Tomorrow podcast will return in it’s audio-only form very shortly – March 16th, to be exact. So keep refreshing your feeds for the moment the sweet stuff hits. If you’re new to the show, you can find the back catalog wherever quality podcasts are offered.

Episode 79: Paul Ford And The Worst Of 2016
Josh once again sits down with the inimitable Paul Ford to discuss the dumpster fire that was 2016. Honestly, if you go back and look at the description of last year's end-of-the-year special with Paul, you'll see that we called 2015 "one of the worst years on record" which, in light of the horrors of 2016, is hilarious. Although Donald Trump features heavily in both episodes.
Anyway, they talk neo-Nazis, ice attacks, Twitter, voice-over acting, and of course: the Dipperz empire. We'll be back in full force for 2017 and then straight through to the inevitable apocalypse.

Also: they're both from Philadelphia, so American dystopias are in their wheelhouse. Sit back and let the cool confidence with which this pair plan to face down our conservative hellscape wash over you.

Episode 74: Katie Drummond is Not Doing the Bone
This week Josh sits down with Katie Drummond, editor-in-cheif at Gizmodo and an all around swell person.
As audio podcasts go, it's fantastic... but what if it were more than that? What if, through the power of virtual reality, you could hear them discuss Playstation, Ken Bone, and Soylent bars inside an active volcano, or under the ocean, or in whatever other scenario you can dream up? Soon enough you can, and it'll only cost you $1000. That is, if you can find Palmer Luckey.

Episode 71: Trickling Down with Ryan Houlihan
This is a very special episode we have here, very special, everyone agrees. Josh, who's really quite a guy, sat down with the show's producer, great comedian and a huge writer, Ryan Houlihan – who's just one of the top people, just a top guy – to discuss last night's debate between Crooked Hillary and The King of Debt: Donald Trump. It's really extensive, totally, believe me.
It's really amazing, really high quality and under budget. Just superb, a knockout. Really dig in and try and understand this, it's truly a great episode, honestly. We're not just bragging – people are talking about it, CNN's covered it. You'll check it out, you'll see.

Do you know how insignificant your silly phone updates are to us, your children's children's children? They aren't even a blip in our history books! You're impressed by Twitter and messaging stickers when somewhere in the world people are perfecting gene editing techniques? Preposterous!

Episode 67: Aaron Edwards is Finding His Roots
Have you seen the musical Cats? Neither has Josh – but Aaron Edwards, a senior editor at The Outline, has a plan to ensure he enjoys every moment of those "jellicle cats."
What kind of cat is a "jellicle cat," you ask? Well, first: A jellicle cat would listen to Josh and Aaron talk about their family histories. Second: A jellicle cat would never, ever rush through Frank Ocean's new album... it would know that it is to be savored. And third: A jellicle cat would be happy for the Rio Olympians, but would not sit down and watch a lot of the games. That's what a "pollicle dog" would do.

She thinks she has some hilarious insights into my personality because of some anecdotes about my fear of needles and lies about the state of my hair? Sad! I've got the best hair, ask my friends – of all races!
I've been pulling in RECORD RATINGS – everybody agrees, believe me – meanwhile she's spouting off about Ted Cruz's soup collection and Jeb Bush's weird clothing? As if! Really nasty stuff, truly.

They also touch on TV set in Los Angeles, explore the Lifetime film canon, and diminish the importance of Improv as an art form. Oh Britain, what have you done? No, seriously, what have you done...? Because not only does this "Brexit" stuff not make any political sense, but your friends across the pond are still a bit fuzzy on the details.
To get to the bottom of all this, Josh enlisted Felix Salmon, one of the UK's finest, host of Slate's Money podcast, and a Senior Editor at Fusion, to explain all of this to us as best he can. Why would anyone do this? Why was any of this even on the table? Is this whole thing legally binding? Will Scotland and Northern Ireland leave the UK in the dust? Can Americans finally feel superior to the Brits for the first time in decades?

Episode 57: E. Alex Jung, Allegedly
This episode is an (allegedly) amazing discussion between Josh and associate editor at Vulture E. Alex Jung. It's (reportedly) all about representation in media – or the lack thereof.
They (may or may not) talk about where you can find asian people on TV, why more and more online publications are scared to publish controversial opinions, and America's festering prejudices. (We cannot confirm or deny that) they diddle around topics like who in Hollywood might be using their powers for evil, or how exactly those people could silence their critics.

Episode 47: Has Josh Made a Horrible Mistake?
On today's Tomorrow, Josh ponders the meaning of his $1000 deposit on the Tesla Model 3. Did he make a wise investment? Is Elon Musk's super (and super affordable) dream machine all that it appears? Is the electric car revolution just beginning? And most importantly, how long will it take Josh to actually get his car? Friend of the show / Bloomberg Digital Managing Editor Michael Shane stops by to help Josh answer these questions, and many many more. Some example topics: Is virtual reality stuck at the Palm Treo stage? Does 'Batman v Superman' signal the end of comic book movies? And will Josh hold a grudge against someone? All these questions and more are not answered in any meaningful way. But you have to listen. Because the power of Christ compels you.

The future of media. What is it? What does it look like? Are we living in it? Is it yet to come? Is it something you want? Is it something you need? Is it something we should fear? Is it something we should embrace? None of these questions can be answered, but Josh and his brilliant guest Alexander Klöpping — the CEO and founder of news-reading experience Blendle — make a valiant attempt. Along the way they also tackle Holland facts, terrorism, CDs, Gabber music, and the tyranny of podcast apps. If you miss this episode, everything they said about you will turn out to be true.

Just hours before the shocking verdict was delivered in the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker trial, Josh sat down in the studio with former Gawker Editorial Director Joel Johnson to discuss just about everything... including life in Nick Denton's world. While the two do spend some quality time hashing through what it's like to be part of one of the most controversial companies in media (and wildly misjudging how the jury would rule in the case), they also delve into other areas of import. Video games, Batman, CarPlay, politics, and much more are on tap. This is a lively episode to say the least. If you don't enjoy it, you're probably dead already.

A Message From Josh
There will not be a new Tomorrow episode this week. The reason? Thanksgiving. Like all Americans, including the great Donald Trump, Josh is taking time to be with his family and reflect on the many wonderful things he has been so lucky to receive in his life. Like his bow and arrow set, that small hat he wears only on Wednesdays, and a lifetime "all you can eat" card from Dairy Queen. This week off will also allow Josh time to recharge his batteries, both the ones he uses in his pacemaker, as well as the metaphorical batteries which power his soul. Or whatever is powering Josh, because he still doesn't believe in souls even after watching "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" twice in the theater. But you get the point. We'll be back with more new Tomorrow next week. In the meantime, why not take a load off and Whip The Dip™ with your whole family?

Along the way Sam and Josh find a friendship that will last a lifetime, or at least until Sam puts Josh in the spotlight for being a snake oil salesman who's too busy getting high on his own supply to see the damage he's doing to the crafting industry.
