Girls on the Run Rio Grande is a social and emotional development program, driven by an evidence-based curriculum that helps 3rd-5th grade girls build confidence, kindness and decision-making skills. On the Well Woman Show today I interview Danielle Slupesky. Danielle is a certified End of Life Coach and Death Doula. She takes a non-judgmental, heart-centered approach to working with those who are thinking about, preparing for, and near the end of their lives. She offers non-medical, practical, emotional, spiritual and physical support to the dying, as well as to their caregivers and loved ones. Through public education and community engagement her goal is normalize conversations surrounding death, grief and loss. She aims to desterilize and demedicalize death and the dying process. After a near death experience in 2013, Danielle says, "I came back with a mission. I want to bring death back home. Back into the hands and hearts of our families and communities. Overcoming the Odds, Changing Careers and Developing Resilience with Dr. Wendy Ellis
On the Well Woman Show today I interview Dr. Wendy Ellis, Assistant Professor in Global Health and the Founding Director of the Center for Community Resilience at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. I met Dr. Ellis at a summit on early childhood, childcare and workplace policy - one of my all time favorite topics. And when I heard her speak about resilience and her take on the Adverse Childhood Experience model (known as ACES), I just knew I had to have her on the show. While the world, and the US in particular, might be in breakdown, there are leaders that are already rebuilding, and actually facilitating the emergence of a new version of the systems and structures that we not build for or by women and certainly not women of color. Dr. Wendy Ellis is one of those leaders.She is an Assistant Professor in Global Health and the Founding Director of the Center for Community Resilience at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. Dr. Ellis has spent the last fifteen years developing and working to grow a 'resilience movement' to address systemic inequities that contribute to social and health disparities that are often transmitted in families and communities from generation to generation.The Center for Community Resilience seeks to improve the health of communities by enabling cross-sectoral partners to align policy, program and practice to address adverse childhood experiences in the context of adverse community environments--or as Dr. Ellis has coined it "The Pair of ACEs". This innovative framing of ACEs, with an explicit focus on equity and prevention, has had a substantial influence on local initiatives, programs, public health initiatives and local, state and federal policy. Using the Pair of ACEs framing, Building Community Resiliencenetworks have successfully led systems and policy change focused on addressing long-standing economic, social and health disparties by partnering with community, integrating service delivery and building political will for change.The strengths-based approach is aimed at building the infrastructure to disrupt cycles of structural racism, foster equity and promote resilience in communities by improving access to supports and buffers that help individuals 'bounce back' and communities thrive.Leveraging her extensive background in communications, in 2022 Dr. Ellis produced a documentary, “America’s Truth: Cincinnati” that follows her team’s innovative approach to centering conversations on structural racism that galvanized a resilience movement to foster equity through systems and policy change. Dr. Ellis holds several leadership positions in public health including Chair of the National Academy of Sciences, Enhancing Community Resilience in the Gulf States Committee, Scientific Advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Prevention and Injury Center and the National Academy’s Culture of Health Advisory Board. 317: Close the Gender Gaps in Self Esteem and Power; Claim Your Self Worth with Dr Adia Gooden
Today, we delve into the groundbreaking work of Dr. Adia Gooden, a licensed clinical psychologist focusing on unconditional self-worth, imposter syndrome, and Black women and mental health. And, we’ll hear about Gloria Feldt’s efforts with Take The Lead and the ambitious goal of achieving gender parity by 2025. Let’s start by talking about the gender gaps in self-esteem and power. These gaps still persist in our society, affecting various marginalized groups, especially women and in particular, Black, Indigenous and women of color. The self-esteem gap refers to the disparity in how individuals perceive their worth and value, and it can have significant implications for personal and professional growth. On the other hand, the power gap refers to the uneven distribution of decision-making authority and influence between genders. As we continue our program today, think about how you would rate your won self esteem and your power, or decision making authority and influence. Is it strong? Is it where you want it to be?
One researcher who has been shedding light on this issue is Dr. Adia Gooden. She has focused her work on understanding self-worth and its impact on mental health, particularly among black women. Dr. Gooden’s research highlights the unique challenges faced by black women in society and the importance of fostering self-esteem and self-worth for overall well-being. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the need to address these disparities and to support the leaders doing this work.
Now, let’s shift our attention to Gloria Feldt, a renowned author and activist who has made it her mission to achieve gender parity by 2025. This week on the Well Woman Show, I interview Dr. Lynn Kern Koegel, Clinical Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. This month on the Well Woman Show, we celebrate International Women's Day as well as Women's History Month. The theme of the United Nations Observance of International Women's Day is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, recognizing and celebrating the women and girls who are championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education. The observance will explore the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities, and it will also spotlight the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces and addressing online gender-based violence.
At the IWD commemoration event held at UN headquarters in New York, UN and Member States representatives, technologists, innovators, entrepreneurs, youth, and gender equality activists celebrated the women and girls who are championing the advancement of technology and innovation and their potential as a transformative mechanism for achieving gender equality. The annual event also addressed the existing gaps for women and girls in accessing digital spaces and skills, as well as the dangers they face from online violence.
According to UN Women, gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. There has been progress over the last decades, but the world is not on track to achieve gender equality by 2030.
The social and economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation even bleaker. Progress in many areas, including time spent on unpaid care and domestic work, decision-making regarding sexual and reproductive health, and gender-responsive budgeting, is falling behind.

302: Three Things All High Achievers Need to Thrive
Over the years, I've interviewed hundreds of high achieving women, from Byron Katie to Dr. Shafali, Elizabeth Lesser and Deepak Chopra's daughter, Mallika Chopra. And you know what the common thread is between all of them? They all do these three things:Engage in a mindfulness practice - this doesn't have to be sitting on a cushion meditating. It can be any meditative activity, such as walking, cooking, dancing or breath work.Identify and prioritize their needs (ie. self care) - this is a daily practice, not just getting a massage once every six months. Seriously, the self care industry has us believe that we need to buy expensive treatments and products in order to practice self care. In reality, we have the ability to identify our needs and take care of them already.Share and grow in a community of women - this can be your circle of friends, but usually you'll need something more structured and a place where you can show up as the woman you want to be (not who people label you as, or who your friends and family think you should be). You show up differently when you are supported to BE the writer, the woman who gets promoted, the leader, the changemaker, the innovator, or whoever it is you are in the world. Hello Well Woman, on Show this week, I interview NINA SIMONS is Co-founder and Chief Relationship Officer at Bioneers, and leads its Everywoman’s Leadership program. Throughout her career spanning the nonprofit, social entrepreneurship, corporate, and philanthropic sectors, Nina has worked with nearly a thousand diverse women leaders across disciplines, race, class, age and orientation to create conditions for mutual learning, trust and leadership development.
She co-edited Moonrise: The Power of Women Leading from the Heart, and authored Nature, Culture, and the Sacred: A Woman Listens for Leadership—released as a second edition in 2022 with an accompanying discussion guide and embodied practices. The first edition won Nautilus awards in the categories of Women in the 21st Century and Social Change & Social Justice. On the well woman show this week, I interview Elizabeth Garland. She is an award-winning composer for film and has performed her piano pieces in the US and abroad. Winner of the 2019 International Piano Guild Composition Competition Special Category Award, 2nd place winner of the International Golden Key Composition Competition, she performed at the World Composer's concert in Vienna in 2018.A well-known composer and performer, Elizabeth Garland’s solo piano and the ensemble have been featured in films and documentaries, and she has performed her works in the US and abroad. This week, we finish strong with three tips for loving the skin you're in as well as finding and trusting your inner Well Woman instead of looking externally for answers. First, hydrate - we started with warm water in the morning and now we're hydrating throughout the day. Second, apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harm. Third, try a self massage after the shower - apply lotion or oils to your legs and arms and see how your body responds. Finally, go back to the last episode (291) and do the visualization again, this time asking your most powerful self, your inner Well Woman, what she wants to say to you and what she needs. Have a journal handy to capture any insights, words or images as they come up.

Where are you? What do you see? What colors and textures are around you? Breathe into this image of you in your power. And breathe it out through your whole body. How can you apply this powerful version of you to your day today? What would your most powerful self spend her time doing today? Accomplish today? Celebrate today? Take some notes. This is gold. If you had a hard time visualizing anything, don't worry. Take a drink of water, move around and try it again. Casa integrates primary care, queer/transgender care, harm reduction, addictions treatment, case management, medical debt advocacy and community organizing, acupuncture, reiki, massage, and indigenous based healing circles for uninsured, immigrant, and other marginalized communities in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Anjali is board certified in family medicine and in addiction medicine, and also works in the emergency room of a small rural hospital in the Navajo Nation. Anjali is a statewide appointee to the Governor’s Council on Racial Justice.

289: Just Giovanna: The Well Woman Summer Reset Week Three – Deep Rest for Your Brain
On Week 3 of The Well Woman Summer Reset, we explore deep rest for your brain with an exploration of the nervous system and the breath. The past two years have been a challenge for all humans, and you've likely been carrying around a constant sense of anxiety that may be very noticeable or very sneaky. The sneaky type of anxiety can be the hardest to address and it takes tuning in to your body to begin to rest your nervous system. This reset will help.
If the body is in fight or flight, then chances are that you may need a system reset. Here are some simple breathing techniques to help you relax, maintain optimal health, and sustain longevity.
Meditation #1
Sitting - eyes open:
Visual, Touch, Breath
Shift attention to looking at one thing in front of you, exquisitely aware of colors and shades with great clarity, see textures and shapes in great detail.
Now shift to a soft, diffused visual focus on whatever you’re looking at to tune it out. Focus your sharp primary attention on sense of touch. Touch something with your fingertips. Move your fingertips so you can really feel all the nuanced sensations on your fingertips.
With your visual focus remaining soft and diffuse, notice your breath now. Notice the rising and falling of your stomach with each breath.
Meditation #2
Sitting - eyes closed:
Three Breaths
Notice your breath. What is the temperature going in, and exiting your nostrils?
Focus your attention on gratitude for your breath. Feel how grateful you are for the breath that has been with you all your life.
Take a deeper breath, from the belly, let the air fill your body. Hold for two counts and exhale with mouth open

On the well woman show this month, I interview Dr. Caitlyn Collins, Caitlyn Collins is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Washington University in St. Louis. She studies gender inequality in the workplace and family life. Her award-winning book, Making Motherhood Work: How Women Manage Careers and Caregiving (Princeton University Press, 2019), is a cross-national interview study of 135 working mothers in Sweden, Germany, Italy, and the United States. Recently, Collins is engaged in collaborative research to probe how the COVID-19 pandemic shapes mothers’ employment. She is interviewed often in national media, and she has written for The Atlantic, The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, The Washington Post, and Slate.
Dr. Collins is a featured speaker for WFRN Conference in June. Founded in 1997, The Work and Family Researchers Network, or WFRN, is an international organization dedicated to advancing the impact of work-family scholarship on lives, practice and policy. Nearly 2500 researchers have joined the WFRN as members. The WFRN is hosting its next conference June 23-25, 2022 in New York City. 282 Breadwinners and Breadmakers with Jaime Gloshay
On the Well Woman Show this month we’re celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women in recognition of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn't enough. Action is needed to level the playing field. Today I am interviewing Jaime Gloshay, Co-Director of Native Women Lead where she co-leads key efforts in capital expansion, fundraising, and advocacy while leading program design, international development, and evaluation oversight.
Previously, Jaime led Accion’s Native Lending program managing a portfolio of $1M+ and supported the development of Nusenda’s Co-Op Capital initiative to pilot relationship-based lending. In 2019, she was appointed to lead the tribal subcommittee for the State of NM Census Complete Count Commission which activated a $11.5M state investment to ensure a 2020 complete count. Jaime holds a BA in Native American Studies & Political Science and an MPA in Public Management from the University of New Mexico. Jaime is a citizen of the Navajo, White Mountain Apache, and Kiowa Nations. She is a mother of three residing in Tiwa Territory. Jaime enjoys hiking, being on her ancestral homelands, and reading to restore.
Race and ethnicity compound the gender pay gap: According to a 2020 analysis by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, the median annual earnings for full-time, year-round work for Native American women was 60% of White non-Hispanic men’s. This week on The Well Woman Show, I talk to Dr. Barbara Koltuska-Haskin. Dr Barbara is a Clinical Neuropsychologist in private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She has over thirty years of clinical experience. She also has a research and academic teaching background. In addition to her doctorate in psychology/neuropsychology, she has a Master of Science degree in Clinical Psychology and Bachelor of Education degree (valedictorian). She also completed 450 hours of academic coursework in psychopharmacology sponsored by the Southwestern Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy/New Mexico State University Collaborative.Dr. Koltuska-Haskin was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland. In 1989, she was awarded the AAUW (American Association of University Women) International Fellowship given to one out of thirty international applicants. She spent her fellowship year at UCLA’s postdoctoral training program in neuropsychology. She later received her US citizenship as an “alien of exceptional abilities” on the basis of her educational, research and clinical achievements. After her fellowship, she worked for many years as a neuropsychologist at the New Mexico State Hospital in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Because she was the only neuropsychologist for the entire San Miguel and Mora Counties area, she was exposed to many types and stages of brain trauma, chronic mental illness, and addiction. It was challenging work, but an extensive and meaningful experience. She continued working for the state of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and was later a clinical director for a local nonprofit organization. Since 2003, she has been working full-time in her private practice, providing comprehensive and compassionate care for her New Mexico patients. She is the author of the book, How My Brain Works: A Guide to Understanding It Better and Keeping It HealthyShe loves New Mexico for its sunshine, beautiful nature, and hospitality of the people. She also brings over a decade of experience working with minority and tribally owned and operated businesses and entities from start-ups to established businesses. As the former Executive Director of the All Pueblo Council of Governors, she has extensive knowledge in working with the 20 Pueblos of New Mexico’s tribal leadership on critical issues affecting tribal communities including health, education, state, and federal legislation, natural resources, elder issues, and youth initiatives. She is a recipient of the 2019 New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award from the New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. Alicia currently serves as a Commissioner on the City of Albuquerque Commission on American Indian and Alaska Native Affairs and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Tribal Nations Advisory Council. She is also an artist and active community member and enjoys volunteering and supporting organizations close to her heart including the American Indian Business Association and the Native Guitars Tour Organization.She'll be interviewing her mom, Rebecca Ortega who is from the Pueblos of Santa Clara and Pojoaque. She is a wife to her husband of 44 years, Adan Ortega, and mother to her three children, Adam, Mario, Alicia, and Son-in-law Dennis, and grandchildren Neva and Ezra. Rebecca is a graduate of New Mexico Highlands University Class of 1976 where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology. President-elect Joe Biden's transition team on Thursday announced New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland as his nominee for interior secretary, a powerful federal position that oversees natural resources, public lands, and Indian affairs. If confirmed by the Senate, Haaland, from the Pueblo of Laguna, would be the first Native American Cabinet secretary. Haaland was re-elected to her second term representing New Mexico's 1st Congressional District in November and is currently the vice-chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources. She's been working to organize rural and tribal communities for years, including in her role as Democratic Party chair of New Mexico.As the world learns more about Congresswoman Deb Haaland who is President-elect Biden's pick for Department of the Interior, I went into the archives of this show to replay my interview with Deb in 2016, when she was the first Native American state party chair as chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.In a statement, the Biden-Harris transition team called Haaland a "barrier-breaking public servant who has spent her career fighting for families, including in Tribal Nations, rural communities, and communities of color," who will be "ready on day one to protect our environment and fight for a clean energy future."In this interview from 2016, Cong. 231 Native Women-Owned Businesses with Alicia Ortega
Hello Well Women,What do Flat Cedar Medicine bags, art prints, Vegan Hemp Oatmeal Vanilla Bar Soap, Cedar and Lavender Lotion, Chamomile Lip Balm, and Sage & Cedar Bundles have in common? They were all made by native and women-owned entrepreneurs during this year's pandemic and supported through a project that packaged these items together and mailed them to people all over the world. The project was created by Native Women Lead, an organization dedicated to growing, supporting, and advocating for Native Women in positions of leadership through business and entrepreneurship with a goal to revolutionize systems and inspire innovation by investing in Native Women in business. The organization also gave out 35 loans totaling $150,000 under the Matriarch Response Loan Fund in partnership with Nusenda Credit Union and New Mexico Community Capital. On the Well Woman Show this month, I talk about how working from home with kids magnifies the inequities in our systems and families and I share 6 tips for making this all work for the next few weeks."It is true that a crisis, and in this case, a global health pandemic, shows us our truth. It shines a spotlight on the weaknesses in our systems, shows us who our leaders really are, and magnifies the inequities in our personal relationships."With these systems issues in mind, here are a few practical tips for making this all work for the next few weeks:Start your day with a routine: whether that is exercise, meditation, reading or journaling, find what works for you to maintain a sense of feeling grounded. Then, extend that to the kids. Have a routine for them in the morning to include breakfast, chores, and reading or free time. Flexibility is key.Redefine productivity: You may need to lower your expectations because you will not be as productive as you are used to because of the added stress and having the kids at home.Nourish yourself and your kids: eat what make your body feels good, move your body or even work up a sweat by walking in nature, and carve out some time every day to do something you love, like curling up with a book and a cup of tea or take a hot bath and get enough sleep. For the kids, this is their free time to choose what they love.Delegate: if you’re a pro at this, then, by all means, pull out your best delegation strategies. If you’re newer and have trouble setting boundaries or delegating, then now is the time to start.Connect with the community (online, text) and family: set up a time to call grandparents and family. Set up group chats with friends.Be of service: whether in your work or in your community, how can you serve others? Journal about this and then do one thing.
