Chennai Crowned Champions in Last-Ball Thriller
Chennai are Indian T20 League champions once again, completing a dream comeback - from finishing ninth last season to winning the title in 2023. On Monday night in Ahmedabad, on the reserve day of the final, MS Dhoni's team overcame more than a few odds to defeat defending champions Gujarat by 5 wickets in a last-ball thriller.
Sai Sudharsan top-scored for Gujarat with 94 as the team posted 214/4. Three balls into Chennai's chase, rain once again came into the picture, and after hours of delay, Chennai's updated target was 171 in 15 overs. Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave the team the perfect start, scoring 74 runs but Gujarat got back into the game with Noor Ahmed sending both of them back in the 7th over. Eventually, Chennai needed 10 runs off the last 2 balls and Ravindra Jadeja smashed a six and then a four to get Chennai past the finish line.
This is their fifth championship win.

Defending Champions Gujarat Qualify for Final
Shubman Gill continued his century-making spree, scoring a match-winning 129 against Mumbai in Friday night's Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad to help Gujarat record a 62-run victory.
The defending champions will now play Chennai for the title on Sunday night.
Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to chase in the must-win game but Shubman Gill pretty much single-handedly took the game away from Mumbai with his century - his third this season. Gujarat posted 233/3 which proved too tall a task for Mumbai, even though Suryakumar Yadav fought a lone battle, as the five-time former champions were knocked out of the tournament.

MS Dhoni's Chennai Enter Final
Gujarat have looked the most dominant team this season and entered the playoffs as the top ranked team following the league stage, but if there was any team that knows how to play the playoffs - it's Chennai. MS Dhoni's team had the added advantage of playing this first Qualifier at home at the Chepauk and they made the most of it, winning the match by 15 balls to spare.
First things first, Shubman Gill did not score another century, since he does seem to be on such a streak. He made 42. MS Dhoni also got to bat and scored 1 off 2 as Chennai posted 172/7 after being put into bat first by Hardik Pandya. That, however, proved more than enough as Gujarat lost by 15 runs.
Chennai now go through to Sunday’s final but Gujarat aren't out of the tournament, but have another shot at reaching the final when they play Friday's Qualifier 2 against the winner of Wednesday night's Eliminator between Lucknow and Mumbai.

Gill Stars in Gujarat’s Win, Bangalore Evicted
In 2015, Mumbai did the Indian cricket team a great favour, by providing an unknown youngster from Baroda with a platform to shine. Eight years later, the player, Hardik Pandya, returned Mumbai the favour, as his team, Gujarat knocked Bangalore out with a six-wicket win in the last league-stage match of the season.
Put to bat first, Bangalore scored 197 runs, as Virat Kohli scored his seventh century in this competition, and subsequently, creating a new record. But from the opposition, Shubman Gill not only matched it, but he even bettered it, as his unbeaten 104-run knock took Gujarat over the line.
Barring Kohli, none of the Bangalore batters turned up, with the experienced batters now being subjected to a few difficult questions. Having scored only 140 runs this season, Dinesh Karthik was dismissed on a golden duck, whereas an in-form Glenn Maxwell scored merely 11 runs.
Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad starred with the ball for Gujarat, combining effectively to pick up three wickets, and concede just 63 runs in their eight overs. The visitors lost Wriddhiman Saha early, but Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar built a 123-run partnership, which eventually proved to be match-defining.
Following Shankar’s dismissal, Gill took the onus on himself to get his team over the line, which he did by scoring an unbeaten 52-ball 104. Not only did his knock secure a couple of points for his team, but it also booked Mumbai’s place in the playoffs, subsequently calling curtains to Bangalore’s campaign.

Green's Century Helps Mumbai Defeat Hyderabad
Mumbai needed to win to keep their playoff hopes on track and Rohit Sharma's men did just that on Sunday, in their final league stage match, beating Hyderabad by 8 wickets.
The win now takes Mumbai to fourth in the standings with only Bangalore now having a chance to overtake them, with Faf du Plessis's men playing the last league match of the season, tonight against Gujarat in Bengaluru.
At the Wankhede on Sunday afternoon, Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first. Hyderabad’s openers thanked him for that call by scoring 140 runs together. Mayank Agarwal is earning some redemption after a below-par season, that saw him dropped and on the sidelines for most of this month, top-scored for the team with 83 off 46. 23-year-old Vivrant Sharma, batting for the first time this season, also defied the Mumbai bowlers to make 69. Akash Madhwal was the pick of Rohit's bowlers, finishing with 4/37 in his four overs.
In reply, Ishan Kishan got out in the third over but skipper Rohit Sharma rose to the occasion to score a solid 56 to provide Mumbai's chase the perfect foundation. Cameron Green though starred with the bat, scoring the fastest century of the season to get the team past the finish line in the penultimate over.

Lucknow Book Playoffs Spot, Kolkata Bow Out
Lucknow became the third team to qualify for the 2023 Indian T20 League playoffs, courtesy of a hard-fought one-run triumph over Kolkata, at the Eden Gardens. Subsequently, the two-time champions’ campaign also comes to a conclusion.
Put to bat first, Lucknow scored 176 runs, with Nicholas Pooran’s half-century, and Ayush Badoni’s supporting act rescuing the team from a precarious position. In response, Kolkata were just a run short, with Rinku Singh’s 33-ball 67 not yielding two points.
Lucknow had a difficult start with the bat, as Kolkata’s uncapped pace pairing of Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Arora did a decent job. They combined to bowl seven overs, wherein they conceded just 51 runs and also picked up three wickets.
At one stage, Lucknow were reeling at 73/5, but Pooran and Badoni’s sixth-wicket stand changed the complexion of the game. The Caribbean wicketkeeper-batter was the star of the show, scoring 58 runs in 30 deliveries.
Kolkata had a flying start with the bat, until the introduction of the spin trio of Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham and Ravi Bishnoi. They worked wonders for the team that donned green and maroon in this game, as a tribute to ATK Mohun Bagan, with Rinku ending up on the losing side, despite yet another herculean effort.

Punjab Beat Delhi to Remain Alive in Top 4 Hunt
Delhi epitomized idioms like ‘falling like nine pins’ and ‘crumbling like a house of cards' in match 59 of the Indian T20 League, as they were handed a 31-run defeat by Punjab. Shikhar Dhawan’s men were put to bat first and they scored 167 runs, with Prabhsimran Singh scoring his maiden ton in this competition. In response, Delhi were once cruising at 69/0, but then went through a gigantic collapse, ultimately managing to muster only 136/8.
Although Prabhsimran had scored just one fifty in his first 17 games, he was seen at his very best in this fixture. Having scored just 27 runs off his first 31 deliveries, the 22-year-old from Punjab shifted gears only after getting his eye in.
Punjab’s decision of sending Sam Curran ahead of Sikandar Raza and Shahrukh Khan, however, did not pay dividends, with the all-rounder scoring just 20 runs in 24 deliveries.
For Delhi, Ishant Sharma was once again the most influential bowler, picking up the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Liam Livingstone.
The hosts had an outstanding start with the bat, with skipper David Warner leading by example, courtesy of a 27-ball 54. Cruising at 69/0 at the one stage it seemed that the two points have been all but secured until Harpreer Brar’s four-fer and Rahul Chahar’s twin scalps jolted Delhi’s progress. They lost six wickets in 19 runs, and ultimately, could not score more than 136 runs.

Jaiswal smashed the season's highest individual score of 124, but Mumbai followed that up by successfully chasing the highest ever T20 total at the ground, to win the match by 6 wickets.

Lucknow Beat Punjab on Record-Breaking Night
Lucknow got the better of Punjab in match 38 of the Indian T20 League, in a rather emphatic batter. After being put to bat first, KL Rahul’s team scored 257/5, and became just the second team after Bangalore to score 250 or more in this competition.
Kyle Mayers and Marcus Stoinis scored half-centuries for them. In response, Punjab were bowled out for 201, with Yash Thakur picking up a four-wicket haul, and Naveen-ul-Haq supporting him with three wickets.

Rajasthan Halt Chennai's Juggernaut
Chennai were on a three-game winning streak, and Rajasthan had lost their last couple of games before coming into Thursday's (27 April) fixture, but contrary to the popular prediction, Rajasthan emerged victorious at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
Rajasthan batted first and scored 202 runs – a tournament record highest in Jaipur. In response, Chennai could only score 170 runs, with Sanju Samson's team recording a 32-run triumph.
Chennai struggled with the bat right from the start, with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway – the most dominating opening pair this season – scoring only 42 runs in the powerplay as opposed to Rajasthan's 64.
MS Dhoni's team was once reeling at 73/4, and it seemed that the game is all but done. But, Moeen Ali and Shivam Dube’s partnership brought them right back in the hunt, until Adam Zampa sent the Englishman packing. The Aussie spinner ended up with figures of 3-0-22-3.
Dube’s half-century took the game deep, but surprisingly, Dhoni did not come out to bat, sending Ravindra Jadeja ahead of him.

Warner Trumps Former Team Hyderabad by 7 Runs
Delhi have picked up their second points of the season, beating Hyderabad by 7 runs in another last-ball finish, on Monday night in Hyderabad.
David Warner, returning to the ground he called home for many years, won the toss and elected to bat first but that wasn't the only big call he made. Prithvi Shaw was left out of the playing XI for the first time this season, with Sarfaraz Khan replacing him. Pushed up to open, Phil Salt didn't do much as he was out first ball. Mitch Marsh batted at 3 and made 25 as Warner ended up scoring 21 off 20 but by the fall of his wicket, the team was in trouble at 62/5 after 8 overs. Axar Patel and Manish Pandey through added 69 for the sixth wicket and scored 34 each to help the team post 144/9.
Hyderabad chase was slow with Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal putting together 31 runs after 5 overs before Brook got out to Nortje on 7. Mayank went onto score 49 before his wicket started a bit of a trend for Hyderabad with a wicket falling in the 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th overs. In the end, 13 were needed off the last over and Mukesh Kumar conceded just 5 as Delhi won the match by 7 runs.

Chennai Top Standings With Win Over Kolkata
Chennai registered their third victory on the bounce, courtesy of a a comprehensive 49-run win over Kolkata at the Eden Gardens. The home team's skipper, Nitish Rana might regret asking Chennai to bat first as they scored 235 runs – the highest of this season. Devon Conway, Shivam Dube and Ajinkya Rahane all scored fifties.
In response, Kolkata could only score 186 runs. Jason Roy and Rinku Singh scored half-centuries for them, but barring that, none of the other batters could offer any fight.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Conway set the tone for Chennai yet again with a 73-run opening stand, and the opening pair’s average this season is in excess of 40.
However, the star of the show was Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 71 runs in 29 deliveries. His strike rate is almost 200 this season, as he smashed six fours and five sixes in this fixture.
Kolkata's bowlers conceded 200+ runs for the third time this season, while their opening stand failed to deliver yet again. Sunil Narine was sent up the order, but got out for a duck, with his partner Narayan Jagadeesan scoring just the one run.
Besides the openers, Andre Russell was also disappointing as he could contribute only 9 runs to his team's tally, taking his total to 107 in seven matches.
Kolkata had a couple of saving graces in Jason Roy and Rinku Singh, with both of them scoring fifties. For Rinku, this was his fourth 40+ score.
For Chennai, the Sri Lankan duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana were impressive with the ball, conceding just 59 runs in the eight overs between them, alongside three wickets.

Mumbai Humbled at Home by Sam Curran's Punjab
Another last-over thriller but this game between Mumbai and Punjab lived true to that 'thriller' description with Sam Curran's Punjab collecting the two points from the win, with a 13 run victory.
Mumbai had Jofra Archer return as Rohit Sharma elected to field after winning the toss. Piyush Chawla bowled a double wicket 10th over, sending back Liam Livinstone and Atharv Taide as Punjab were in trouble at 83/4. Harpreet Singh and Sam Curran then collaborated for a 92 run stand that included a ruthless over of Arjun Tendulkar where the bowler was hit for four boundaries and two sixes - conceding 31 runs. Punjab posted a mammoth 214/8 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Mumbai's chase saw opener Rohit Sharma make a quick 44 and then Cameron Green added a handy 67. The star of the innings though was Suryakumar Yadav who was in vintage Surya form, smashing 57 from 26 but when he got to off a brilliant catch by Taide, the score was 184/4 with Mumbai needing 31 from 12.
It was Tim David and Tilak Verma then and the team needed 16 from the last 6 balls. Arshdeep Singh was handed the ball and he was all class taking out Tilak Verma and then Nehal Wadhera's mid stump.
Punjab went onto win the match by 13 runs.

Delhi Seal First Victory of Season, Barely
Five defeats to start the 2023 season and Delhi finally managed to open their account on Thursday night, with a 4 wicket win over Kolkata in New Delhi. The manner in which the match was won though would leave many refusing to address any 'resurgence' questions regarding the franchise.
Delhi started the match very strong, taking control in the second over itself, sending back Litton Das on 4. Venkatesh Iyer, centurion from the last game, got out on a duck to Anrich Nortje while Jason Roy, making his debut, held fort at the other end even as wickets fell with Nitish out on 4, Mandeep on 12, Rinku Singh on 6. Roy made 43 before he too feel and Kolkata were 94/8 in 15 overs. Andre Russell though added some late runs, including three sixes in the final over off Mukesh Kumar, before Kolkata were bowled out for 127.
The chase is where Delhi seemed to dip into the same form that had lost them the last five games as David Warner once again top-scored with a half century. Prithvi Shaw’s struggles continued as he got out on 13 but even then, the home team looked comfortable at 73/3 in 10 overs. But then, they did manage to make a nail-biter out of this one as well and after 15 overs, the team needed 24 before Manish Pandey also got out.
In the end, the equation was down to 8 needed from 8 and Axar Patel hang around till the end to hit the winning runs and help Delhi win the game with 4 balls to spare.

Chennai Edge Past Bangalore In Sixes Galore
Chennai held on to their nerves to secure a hard-fought eight-run victory, in what was a high-scoring encounter against Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. After being asked to bat first in match 24 of the competition, they scored 226 runs, with both Devon Conway and Shivam Dube registering half-centuries.
It was the second consecutive half-century for Conway, whilst he also scored 47 runs against Lucknow. What stood out in today’s knock is his repertoire of shots – as the Kiwi pulled off a brilliant 360° show by hitting the ball to all parts of the ground.
Albeit Chennai’s management has previously been criticized for promoting Shivam Dube ahead of MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, the all-rounder from Mumbai showed his class in this match. In only 27 deliveries, he struck 52 runs.
Bangalore had a disastrous start with the bat, with both Virat Kohli and Mahipal Lomror departing inside the first couple of overs. However, what followed was impeccable batting from Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis. The experienced pair added 126 runs for the third-wicket partnership in only 61 deliveries.
Following their dismissal, Dinesh Karthik got off to a good start, though no one was able to hold the fort. Impact substitute Suyash Prabhudessai did try a few unorthodox hits, but his 11-ball 19 was not enough to get Bangalore over the line.

Harry Brook's Ton Helps Hyderabad beat Kolkata
We finally welcomed the arrival of Harry Brook to the Indian T20 League! So much was riding on the English 24-year-old with Hyderabad breaking the bank to add him to their line-up during December's auction, and it took him a few matches to get used to the Indian conditions. But on Friday, against Kolkata, at the Eden Gardens, Brook was absolute class as she scored an unbeaten 100 to help Hyderabad post the season's highest total - 228/4.
Kolkata's chase was dealt an early setback with Bhuvi picking the wicket of Rahmanullah in the first over and then Marco Jansen packing off Venkatesh Iyer and Sunil Narine to reduce the team to 22/3 in 4 overs. Skipper Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh both scored half centuries and added 69 for the 6th wicket but after Rana fell on 75 off 41, looking for some big shots, the team needed 70 runs from the last 4 overs. Rinku Singh hit some big sixes but there was no encore at the Eden Gardens as lost by 23 runs.

Kolkata Pull Off Miraculous Win Over Gujarat
In an extraordinary game of cricket, Kolkata defeated Gujarat by 3 wickets in match 13, with Rinku Singh going gung-ho in the last over and hitting five consecutive sixes.
Deputizing for an unwell Hardik Pandya, Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first. They scored 204 runs, with Sai Sudharsan and Vijay Shankar scoring half-centuries.

Venkatesh Iyer starred with the bat for Kolkata, with an 83-run knock. A lot has been said about his retention, but he proved his worth today. The all-rounder was a tad timid last season, and in the first two games of this season, but batted with real authority and courage today.
However, the star of the show was Rinku Singh, who scored 48 runs in 21 deliveries. Kolkata needed 29 runs off the last over, but courtesy of Rinku's five consecutive sixes, they got over the line.
