Why Athletes Worry too Much About What Others Think

Do you or your athletes tend to worry too much about what others think of your performance? As mental game experts, we know that athletes often get preoccupied with what we have termed "outcome thinking," and tend to play too safely or cautiously as a result. While it is good to want to be a successful player, when athletes get too wrapped up in being perfect or never making mistakes, their confidence and performance will suffer. No athlete is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. Athletes need to learn to shift their attention from other players and, instead, focus on their own play. In this week’s podcast, Dr. Cohn speaks about skills you can use to focus your attention on what really matters during the game and avoid comparisons with other players or their performance. Helping Athletes Take Practice Skills to Competition Consistently

Do you look like a star in practice, but choke up in competition? Does your performance feel tight, controlled, or lack of freedom when you compete? Many hard-working athletes who get lots of confidence from practice get in their own way (mentally) when they compete… Why do athletes tense up and lose trust in their skills when they compete? Many athletes I work with continue “training” when they compete. They continue with a “practice mindset” in competition. They worry more about how it looks and feels than getting the job done. If you or your athletes do this, you must learn to separate your practice from your performance. How to Overcome Lack of Trust in Skills

One of the biggest challenges for perfectionists is the lack of trust in their skills… Lack of trust in skills is the reason perfectionists tend to under perform in competition–compared to practice. Perfectionism leads to: –Over thinking –Stuck in a practice mindset –Worry about what others think –Outcome and aftermath thinking –Anxiety, tentative play, and indecision All of these prevent the perfectionist from performing with trust in competition–and you can see it on their face or in the performance. How to Overcome All or None Thinking

In this Mental Training podcast, you learn why perfectionist athletes partake in irrational thinking. In this case “all or none thinking” and how to prevent it. One of the characteristics of perfectionists is that they view their performance as black or white, good or bad, with no shades of gray in between. This leads to athletes judging their performance harshly when they don’t perform up to their unwritten standards. These athletes over analyze and judge their performance as either good or bad, while performing, and get stuck on the last shot, skill, or play. Thus, they lose their flow and ability to focus in the moment. How to Respond to Poor Performances in Competition

In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, answers mental game questions in Sessions With Doc. Does a poor performance really rock your world and you tend to lose confidence and wonder what's going on? Today I'm answering a questions from someone who had left a question on our blog at peaksports.com/sports-psychology-blog. Here's what Rick had to say: "I'm in need of some help... I just had one of the worst football games of my entire football career and it is breaking me down slowly. I need to know how to get over this and move on." COHN: Rick, good question. It is really really important for athletes to respond to losses, to respond to poor performances in the right way. A lot of times athletes with fragile confidence will tend to implode after a poor performance. COHN: What is a poor performance? You can ask yourself that question... Often it is when you perform below your standards or below your expectations, feeling like you made too many mistakes or you didn't score enough points or you shot too high of a number in the golf round. COHN: So, poor performances are transient, in other words, they are temporary, unless you get on the doubt bandwagon and start to doubt your skills, you start to change thngs up radically sometimes it'll work but most times, when you start changing things up radically, then you go downhill. Listen to Dr. Cohn's new podcast to learn how to respond to poor performances. What Skills Are Learned in Mental Training?

In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, answers mental game questions in Sessions With Doc. I'm continuing my series on: What is mental coaching? How does mental coaching work? And, what do you do as a mental coach? Another question that I receive from listeners is: "What are the things that you do as a mental coach? What are the things that you work on when you're working with athletes?" COHN: It is a good question and one I receive often from people that will call in requesting more information about the mental coaching or write in via our website at peaksports.com and they want more information about: What do you do in your sessions? How do you help athletes? COHN: It may not be what you think because I am not a therapist, i am not a psychotherapist, I am not a psychologist... I'm a coach and simply a mental coach. COHN: So, what that means is I work on the mental preparation piece and helping athletes take their practice game to competition successfully. COHN:where my work really comes in is when athletes are under performing in competition. They are having problems taking their practice game to the actual game and they struggle with fear of failure, with doubt, lack of confidence, lack of trust in their skills getting highly upset or frustrated... COHN: So, what is is that I do? What are the mental skills that I actually teach athletes? Listen to Dr. Cohn's new podcast to find out what he teaches athletes in the mental coaching program. The Mental Coaching Process

In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn, answers mental game questions in Sessions With Doc. I get a lot of questions about mental coaching and what a mental coach does and how the process works... Today, I'm going to answer a questions from one of our listeners about: "How does mental coaching or mental training work?" COHN: Once we get connected with an athlete that is interested in metal coaching, we will ask a few questions and see if it is a good fit. Sometimes it is just not a good fir and for whatever reason we feel like the athlete isn't read for mental coaching or doesn't need mental coaching. COHN: So we just start with a conversation with an athlete or parent about what we do as a mental coach and ask them a few question about their mental game. COHN:Once were on go and an athlete commits to doing the mental training with us, then we shoot off two different assessments for the athlete. One is called an AMAP Assessment, or Athlete's Mental Aptitude Profile, and the second is the AMAT Test, which we use as a pre-coaching gauge to find out where the athlete is with their mental game. How to Help Athletes Stay Aggressive At The End of a Game

In this week's sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert Dr. Patrick Cohn talks with Dr. Megan Melchiorre. Dr. Megan is the newest member of the Peak Performance Sports team. She is the lead mental coach specializing in working with youth and high school athletes in various sports. Do you have teams that tend to get tight at the end of a set when maybe they didn't expect to win against the opponent and they tighten up and end up losing the set? In this podcast, they will answer the question of the week... "How do you help athletes stay aggressive at the end of a set or match when the game gets tight?" COHN: We know that then end of a game can be more pressure for some athletes... Maybe they tend to think too far ahead about the outcome... COHN: What are the challenges for athletes that they tend to get tight at the end of a match? What are they doing? MEGAN: They try to protect their lead. They start to play safe and to not make mistakes. MEGAN: When they play not to make mistakes, they tend to overthink and over control instead of trusting their ability and shining on a set and attacking a ball, they try to place it on an open spot on the court. MEGAN: When they put easy balls over, they give the opposing team an opportunity to attack. COHN: Good point... and I think if you give the opposing team the opportunity to attack, what is happening is that the opponent will start to make a comeback and sense that the player in the lead is all of the sudden playing safe and protective instead of aggressive and attack. COHN: It gives your opponent the ability to take control over the match. COHN: How do you help players with this issue at the end of the game when the pressure is on the line and you want them to finish the set? Listen to this week's podcast to learn what mental game tips Dr. Cohn and Dr. Megan give to athletes about staying aggressive and trusting their skills.
