I just don't know what's going on or why it has to be.But everyday it's something worse. What's happening to me?I think it was three days ago I first became aware-- That in my comb were caught a couple pieces of my hair.I stared at them, amazed, and more that just a bit appalled to think that I was only five and starting to go bald! Then later on(I don't recall exactly when it was) I lifted up my shirt and found this little piece of fuzz.I stared at it, amazed, and wondered, what's this all about? but then I understood, it was my stuffing coming out!Next day when I was outside playing with the water hose, I saw that little bits of skin were peeling from my toes.I stared at them, amazed, and then I gave a little groan, to think that pretty soon I might be peeled down to the bone.then yesterday, before my bath, as I took off my clothes, A chunk of something gray and wet feel right out of my nose. I stared at it, amazed, and thought, I should be feeling pain. well, wouldn't you if you just lost a little piece of brain? So now, today, I'm sitting here enjoying Dr. Seuss, and suddenly I realize a tooth is coming loose!I wiggle it, amazed, dismayed, too horrified to speak. without my teeth, how can I eat? already I feel weak! Now I'm really worried, I'm as scared as I can be, 'cause finally what's happening is very clear to see--The glue that holds our parts together isn't holding me!!!and now I'm thinking to myself, what's next in line to go?Might be my ears; might be my eyeballs. How's a kid to know? One day I might be playing ball... and have my arm fall off.Or maybe I could lose my head if suddenly I cough.Quite soon I'll be in pieces in a pile without a shape.Thank goodness dad keeps lots and lots and lots of masking tape. What? You forgot? to tell me teeth fall out? and when they do, some brand-new teeth will soon begin to sprout? My hair, my skin, and everything-- there's nothing I should fear?So all of me is normal, whew! That's really good to hear! Then tell me, what's this yellow stuff I got out of my ear?THE END

70. The Emperor's New Clothes 皇帝的新衣
Long ago, there lived an emperor who really loved new clothes. He had colthes for the morning and clothes for the afternoon. and he had extra special colthes for the evening. In fact, he had so many clothes that he sometimes didn't know what to wear. One day, two wicked men came to palace to see the Emperor. "We are weavers," they said."But we are no ordinary weavers. " We can make a special, magic cloth. If a foolish person looks at our cloth, he can't see it at all."The Emperor was impressed. This certainly was something new."I would like you to make a suit of this magic coth," he said eagerly. The weavers smiled at each other. "We shall need a very great deal of gold thread," they said."You shall have all the thread you require," replied the Emperor. The wicked weavers took all the gold thread and hid it in their bags. Then they sat down and busily pretended to make the magic cloth. One night, the Emperor wondered how the weavers were getting on. "Prime Minister, find out if my magic cloth is ready," he ordered.Clickery clack, clickety clack, the weavers were hard at work."Oh dear, "thought the Prime Minister, "I can't see a thing, but I know that I am not stupid."So he hurried off to tell the Emperor that he had never seen such beautiful cloth. When the Prime Minister had gone, the weavers just laughed and laughed. Then they went to the Emperor. "It is time to sew the cloth into a suit," they announced,"We need more gold thread." When they got the thread, they hid it as before. The weavers pretended to cut and sew for a whole week, At last they asked the Emperor to try on his new suit. When he had taken off his clothes, the weavers fussed around the Emperor."What a perfect fit!"they both cried. The Emperor looked in the mirror. He couldn't see any new suit at all. but he didn't want to seem foolish. "It is a beatuiful suit," he said."Magnificent!"The two weavers held their breath until they were sure the Emperor had gone. Then they laughed and laughed and laughed. How was it possiable for clever people to be so silly?By now everyone in the land had heard about the wonderful magic cloth and the Emperor's new suit. They were all sure that they would be able to see it.Soon a royal proclamation was sent out. The emperor was to lead a grand procession, and he would be wearing his new clothes! When the great day arrived, the Emperor sent for the weaver to help him to get dressed."Your Highness looks perfect!" They cried when they had finished. But the Emperor still couldn't see the clothes at all. "I can't be more foolish than the Prime Minister," he thought,"and he could see the cloth." So he paid the weavers handsomely. The trumpets blew and the great procession started. People had some from far and near to get a good view of the Emperor in his new clothes. Butt how surprised they were when they saw him!At last one of the crowd said timidly, "The emperor's new clothes are beautiful!"Then everyone startred talking at once."So fashionable!""Very smart!""Divine!"they said, each of them anxious not to seem more foolish than the rest. But one small boy laughed out loud and shouted, "Look! The emperor has no clothes on!"At once the people around him began to laugh as well."Oh no!" gasped the Emperor, turning very red. "I have been the most foolish person of all!"As for the weavers, the were nowhere to be seen!---THE END

57. A color of his own 自己的颜色 by Leo Lionni
A COLOR OF HIS OWN --- by Leo LionniParrots are greengoldfish are redelephants are graypigs are pinkAll animals have a color of their own-except for chameleons. They change color wherever they go.On lemons they are yellow. In the heather they are purple. And on the tiger they are striped like tigers. One day a chameleon who was sitting on a tiger’s tail said to himself,“If I remain on a leaf, I shall be green forever, and so I too will have a color of my own.”With this thought he cheerfully climbed onto the greenest leaf. But in autumn the leaf turned yellow – and so did the chameleon.Later the leaf turned red, and the chameleon too turned red.And then the winter winds blew the leaf from the branch and with it the chameleon. The chameleon was black in the long winter night. But when spring came, he walked out into the green grass. And there he met another chameleon. He told his sad story. “Won’t we ever have a color of our own?” he asked."I’m afraid not,” said the other chameleon, who was older and wiser."But,” he added, “why don’t we stay together?"We will still change color wherever we go, but you and I will always be alike.”And so they remained side by side. They were green togetherand purpleand yellowand red with white polka dots. And they lived happilyever after.THE END

56. Clifford the Big Red Dog 大红狗
I'm Emily Elizabeth, and I have a dog.
My dog is a big red dog.
Other kids I know have dogs, too.
Some are big dogs.
And some are red dogs.
But I have the biggest, reddest dog on our street.
This is my dog——Clifford.
We have fun together. We play games.
I throw a stick, and he brings it back to me.
He makes mistakes sometimes.
We play hide-and-seek.
I'm a good hide-and-seek player.
I can find Clifford.
no matter where he hides.
We play camping out, and I don't need a tent.
He can do tricks, too.
He can sit up and beg.
Oh, I know he's not perfect.
He has dsome bad habits.
He runs after cars.
He catches some of them.
He runs after cats, too.
We don't go to the zoo anymore.
He digs up flowers.
Clifford loves to chew shoes.
It's not easy to keep Clifford.
He eats and drinks a lot.
His house was a problem, too.
But he's a very good watchdog.
The bad boys don't come around anymore.
One day I gave Clifford a bath.
And I combed his hair, and took him to the dog show.
I'd like to say Clifford won first prize. But he didn't
I don't care. You can keep all you samll dogs.
You can keep all your black, white, brown, and spotted dogs.
I 'll keep clifford...wouldn't you?

52. The Tiny Seed 《小种子》by Eric Carle
It is Autumn.
A strong wind is blowing. It blows flower seeds high in the air and carries them far across the land. One of the seeds is tiny, smaller than any of the others. Will it be able to keep up with the others? And where are they all going?
One of the seeds flies higher than the others. Up, up it goes! It flies too high and the sun's hot rays burn it up. But the tiny seed sails on with the others.
Another seed lands on a tall and icy mountain. The ice never melts, and the seed cannot grow. The rest of the seeds fly on. But the tiny seed does not go as fast sa the others.
Now they fly over the ocean. One seed falls into the water and drowns. The others sail on with the wind. But the tiny seed does not go as high as the others.
One seed drifts down onto the desert. It is hot and dry, and the seed cannot grow. Now the tiny seed is flying very low, but the wind pushes it on with the others.
Finally the wind stops and seeds fall gently down on the ground. A bird comes by and eats one seed. The tiny seed is not eaten. It is so small that the bird does not see it.
Now it is Winter.
After their long trip the seeds settle down. They look just as if they are going to sleep in the earth. Snow falls and covers them like a soft white blanket. A hungry mouse that also lives in the ground eats a seed for his lunch. But the tiny seed lies very still and the mouse does not see it.
Now it is spring.
After a few months the snow has melted. It is really spring! Birds fly by. The sun shines. Rain falls. The seeds grow so round and full they start to burst open a little.
Now they are not seeds any more. They are plants. First they send roots down into the earth. Then their little stems and leaves begin to grow up toward the sun and air. There is another plant that grows much faster than the new little plants. It is a big fat weed. And it takes all the sunlight and the rain away from one of the small new plants. And that little plant dies.
The tiny seed hasn't begun to grow yet. It will be too late! Hurry! But finally it too starts to grow into a plant.
The warm weather also brings the children out to play. They too have been waiting for the sun and spring time. One child doesn't see the plants as he runs along and--Oh! He breaks one! Now it cannot grow any more.
The tiny plant that grew from the tiny seed is growing fast, but its neighbor grows even faster. Before the tiny plant has three leaves the other plant has seven! And look! A bud! And now even a flower!
But what is happening? First there are footsteps. Then a shadow looms over them. Then a hand reaches down and breaks off the flower.
A boy has picked the flower to give to a friend.
It is Summer.
Now the tiny plant from the tiny seed is all alone. It grows on and on. It doesn't stop. The sun shines on it and the rain waters it. It has many leaves. It grows taller and taller. It is taller than the people. It is taller than the trees. It is taller than the houses. And now a flower grows on it. People come from far and near to look at this flower. It is the tallest flower they have ever seen. It is a giant flower.
All Summer long the birds and bees and butterflies come visiting. They have never seen such a big and beautiful flower.
Now it is Autumn again.
The days grow shorter. The nights grow cooler. And the wind carries yellow and red leaves past the flower. Some petals drop from the giant flower and they sail along with the bright leaves over the land and down to the ground.
The wind blows harder. The flower has lost almost all of its petals. It sways and bends away from the wind. But the wind grows stronger and shakes the flower. Once more the wind shakes the folwer, and this time the folwer's seed pod opens. Out come many tiny seeds that quickly sail far away on the wind.

He’s all right, my dad.
My dad isn’t afraid of ANYTHING,
even the Big Bad Wolf.
He can jump right over the moon,
and walk on a tightrope (without falling off).
He can wrestle with giants,
or win the fathers’ race on sports day, easilly.
He’s all righ, my dad.
My dad can eat like a horse,
and he can swim like a fish.
He’s as strong as a gorilla,
and as happy as a hippopotamus.
He’s all right, my dad.
My dad’s as big as a house,
and as soft as my teddy.
He’s as wise as an owl,
except when he tries to help.
He’s all right, my dad.
My dad’s a great dancer,
and a brilliant singer.
He’s fantastic at soccer,
And he makes me laugh. A lot.
I love my dad. And you know what?
HE LOVES ME!
(And he always will.)

OWL MOON --- by John Schoenherr
It was late one winter night,
long past my bedtime,
when Pa and I went owling.
There was no wind.
The trees stood still
as giant statues.
And the moon was so bright
the sky seemed to shine.
Somewhere behind us
a train whistle blew,
long and low,
like a sad, sad song.
I coule hear it
through the wooden cap
Pa had pulled down
over my ears.
A farm dog answered the train,
and then a second dog
joined in.
They sang out,
trains and dogs,
for a real long time.
And when their voices
faded away
it was as quiet as a dream.
We walked on toward the woods,
Pa and I.
Our feet crunched over the crisp snow
and little gray footprints followed us.
Pa made a long shadow, but mine was short and round.
I had to run after him every now and then to keep up,
and my short, round shadow bumped after me.
But I never called out.
If you go owling you have to be quiet,
that's what Pa always says.
------------------------------
I had been waiting to go owling with Pa for a long, long time.
We reacded the line of pine trees,
black and pointy against the sky,
and Pa held up his hand.
I stopped right where I was
and waited.
He looked up,
as if searching the stars
as if reading a map up there.
The moon made his face
into a silver mask.
Then he called
"Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo,"
the sound of a Great Horned Owl.
"Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo."
Again he called out.
And then again.
After each call
he was silent
and for a moment we both listened.
But there was no answer.
Pa shrugged
and I shrugged.
I was not disppointed.
My brothers all said
sometimes there's an owl
and sometimes there isn't.
We walked on.
I could feel the cold,
as if someone's icy hand
was palm-down on my back.
And my nose
and the tops of my cheeks
felt cold and hot
at the same time.
But I never said a word.
If you go owling
you have to be quiet
and make your own heat.
We went into the woods.
The shadows
were the blackest things
I had ever seen.
They stained the white snow.
My mouth felt furry,
for the scarf over it
was wet and warm.
I didn't ask
what kinds of things
hide behind black trees
in the middle of the night.
When you go owling
you have to be brave.
Then we came to a clearing
in the dark woods.
The moon was high above us.
It seemed to fit
exactly
over the center of the chearing
and the snow below it
was whiter than the milk
in a cereal bowl
I sighed
and Pa held up his hand
at the sound.
I put my mittens
over the scarf
over my mouth
and listened hard.
And then Pa called:
"Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo.
Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo."
I listened
and looked so hard
my ears hurt
and my eyes got cloudy
with the cold.
Pa raised his face
to call out again,
but before he could
open his mouth
an echo
came threading its way
through the trees.
"Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo."
Pa almost smiled.
Then he called back:
"Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo,"
just as if he
and the owl
were talking about supper
or about the woods
or the moon
or the cold.
I took my mitten
off the scarf
off my mouth,
and I almost smiled, too.
The owl's call came closer,
from high up the trees
on the edge of the meadow.
Nothing in the meadow moved.
All of a shadow,
an owl shadow,
part of the big tree shadow,
lifted off
and flew right over us.
We watched silently
with heat in our mouths,
the heat of all those words
we had not spoken.
The shadow hooted again.
Pa turned on
his big flashlight
and caught the owl
just as it was landing
on a branch.
For one minute,
three minutes,
maybe even a hundred minutes,
we stared at one another.
Then the owl
Pumped its great wings
and lifted off the branch
like a shadow
without sound.
It flew back into the forest.
"Time to go home,"
Pa said to me.
I knew then I could talk,
I could even laugh out loud.
But I was a shadow
as we walked home.
When you go owling
you don't need words
or warm
or anything but hope.
That's what Pa ways.
The kind of hope
that flies
on silent wings
under a shining
Owl Moon.

Chug-chug! puff-puff! Ding-dong!
went the happy little engine as she rumbled alone.
Then ,suddenly, she stopped. Her wheels would not turn.
How would the good little boys and girls how lived on the other side of the mountain get all their toys and good things to eat?
Along came a shiny new engine."Help us, please." cried the toy clown and all the other dolls and toys.
But the shiny new engine would not help."I am a passenger engine, " he said. "I pull only fine, big trains."
Next came a strong freight engine. The toy clown asked him for help. But the strong freight engine would not.
"I only pull important trains," he said.
Then the clown asked a rusty old engine for help. But he could not.
"I am so old and tired,"he said. "I cannot pull even a little train. I cannot. I cannot."
"What's the matter?" asked a little blue engine kindly.
The sad toy clown told her.
"Well, I'm not very big, and I have never been over the mountain, but I think I can."She hitched herself to the little train and tugged and pulled.
Slowly, slowly, they started uphill.
Faster and faster the little blue engine climbed—
I think I can—I think I can— I think I can
until at last they reached the top of the mountain.
"Hooray!" shouted all the dolls and toys.
How happy the good little girls and boys will be, thought the little blue engine, as she puffed away.
I thought I could—I thought I could. she seemed to say.

If you give a mouse a cookie,he's going to ask for a glass of milk.
When you give him the milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw.
When he's finished, he'll ask for a napkin.
Then he'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache.
when he looks into the mirror, he might notice his hair needs a trim.
So he'll probably ask for a pair of nail scissors.
When he's finished giving himslef a trim, he'll want a broom to sweep up. He'll start sweeping. he might get carried away and sweep every room in the house.
he may even end up washing the floors as well!
when he's done, he'll probably want to take a nap.
You'll have to fix up a little box for him with a blanket and a pillow.
He'll crawl in, make himself comfortable and fluff the pillow a few times.
He'll probably ask you to read him a story.
So you 'll read to him from one of your books, and he'll ask to see the pictures.
When he looks at the pictures, he'll get so excitd he'll want to draw one of his own.
He'll ask for paper and crayons. When the picture is finished, he'll want to sign his name with a pen.
Then he'll want to hang his picture on your refrigerator. Which means he'll need scotch tape.
He'll hang up his drawing and stand back to look at it.
Looking at the rerigerator will remind him that he's thirsty.

So Jesus and the disciples rowed across the sea of Galiee to a quiet place.
The people saw Jesus leaving. Then watched to see where He was heading. Then they took a shorter way to the quiet place.
When Jesus reached the other shore, people were already gathered there.
The people seemed like lost sheep to Jesus. He knew that they needed Him to be their shepherd. So He healed those who were sick... and He comforted those who were unhappy.
Then Jesus went up a mountain with His disciples. He looked down and saw that the crowd had grown and many women and children.
It grew late. Jesus told His disciples,"Give the people something to eat."
The disciple Philip said,"Even two hundred silver coins would not be enough to buy food for all of them."
Jesus said,“How much food is here? Go and see.”
The disciple Andrew answered," There is a boy with five loaves of barley bread and two small fishes. But how can we feed so many people with so little food?"
Jesus took the bread and looked up to Heaven. Then He blessed the loaves and broke them. He handed the pieces to His disciples to give to the people. The fishes, too, were broken and given to the people, And,though it was only a little, and the crowd was huge, there was plenty for everyone after Jesus had blessed the food.
When the people had finished eating, Jesus told His disciples to gathere up the leftover piceds of bread and fish.
They filled twelve big baskets with the pieces that were left after everyone had eaten.
The people wondered at the miracle Jesus had worked, feeding five thousand people with only give loaves of bread and two fishes.

There used to be a nightmare in my closet.
Before going to sleep, I always closed the closet door.
I was even afraid to turn around and look.
When I was safe in bed, I'd peek...sometimes.
One night I decided to get rid of my nightmare once and for all.
As soon as the room was dark, I heard him creeping toward me.
Quickly I turned on the light and caught him sitting at the foot of my bed.
"Go away, Nightmare, or I 'll shoot you,"I said. I shot him anyway.
My nightmare began to cry.I was mad, but not too mad.
"Nightmare, be quite or you'll wake mommy and daddy," I said.
He wouldn't stop crying so I took him by the hand and tucked him in bed and closed the closet door.
I suppose there's another nightmare in my closet, but my bed's not big enough for three.

On Monday, Red Mouse went first to find out.
“It’s a pillar, “he said.No one believed him.
On Tuesday, Green Mouse set out.

“A snake!” “A rope!” “A fan!” “A cliff!”
Until on Sunday, White Mouse, the seventh mouse, went to the pond.
When she came upon the something, she ran up one side,
and she ran down the other.
She ran across the top and from end to end.
“Ah,”said White Mouse. ”Now, I see. The something is
as sturdy as a pillar,
supple as a snake,
wide as a cliff,
sharp as a spear,
breeze as a fan,
stringy as a rope,
but altogether the Something is…an elephant.”

Something from end to end, they agreed.
Now they saw, too.
