S1E26: How a back-office agency is reinventing its 500 humdrum jobs
To secure his 500 colleagues' jobs, this CEO is making them developers. Bonus segment: What could the Dragon Year bring you?!
Synopsis: Every first Monday of the month, listen to the Work Talk podcast to help you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life.
Vital is the Singapore public service’s central agency for corporate shared services entrusted with managing and transforming corporate services delivery for the government.
For years, Vital had been humming in the background, paying out the salaries and expense claims of more than 100,000 public servants in Singapore.
No one paid it much attention, as its 500 workers chugged along, cutting, pasting, reconciling spreadsheets. Much of their work was laborious, tedious, and honestly, could have been done by machines.
Four years ago, something happened. The agency got a new chief, a new dream, and for its 500 workers - a new aspiration to become citizen developers.
In this episode of Work Talk, ST senior correspondent Krist Boo takes you into Vital to meet Mr Dennis Lui, its chief executive and hear how employees are automating their own work processes.
And in a bonus podcast segment - with Chinese New Year days away - hear what the 2024 Dragon Year could bring you, from Master Ken Koh from The House of Feng Shui.
Highlights (click/tap above):
2:26 Vital's existential crisis; finding the right partner to customise its courses for retraining
5:18 Validation boost: In 2020, the government gives it the mandate to transform corporate services delivery

S1E21: Return To Office: Why are we still talking over each other?
Could “return to office” save workplace toxicity?
Synopsis: Every first Monday of the month, the Work Talk podcast helps you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life.
“There are elements of working hybrid that can easily lead to situations that become toxic. And that is one of the things that we want to recognise, so we can recognise when those are happening and cut them off,” says associate professor Mark Mortensen, of organisational behaviour at Insead university.
If you are reading this on the way to the office, or at your workplace, you may be one of those who wonder why you have been summoned back to the office.
About 79 per cent of Singapore workers are showing up on mandated days, more than the global average of 75 per cent, says a report by workplace strategy and design firm Unispace.
In this episode, ST's senior correspondent Krist Boo hosts Prof Mortensen, who cautions that long-term hybrid work could lead to workplace toxicity. Joining the podcast too, is Ms Yoshi Kakimoto, head of talent acquisition at Informa, and Mr Mark Ng, the social content lead at employment portal JobStreet.
They round up hybrid work from the perspectives of business, HR and Gen Z, and also question if the downsides of seeing too much of one’s colleagues might justify working from home.
Highlights (click/tap above):
5:29 Do companies offering hybrid work have an edge in hiring?
8:25 Why doesn’t anyone talk about the downsides of Return To Office?
12:07 How could bosses resolve the discord over the number of remote days?
14:21 Is an equilibrium in sight?
16:39 How do young people find mentorship in a hybrid world?

S1E14: They quit school early and do blue-collar jobs; can they have hope in Singapore? - Work Talk
Ms Shobana Baskaram had no higher school qualifications but is now assistant manager at Marina Bay Sands.
Synopsis: Every first Monday of the month, the Work Talk podcast helps you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life.
In this episode, host Krist Boo asks these questions: Can a room attendant who barely speaks or read English rise to become an assistant front-office manager? Does a restaurant manager really need a diploma or a degree? Can a secondary-school graduate manage a team of 44?
She and her guests talk about the plight of Singaporean workers who stop school at, or before completing their secondary education. They make up 27 per cent of our local workforce of 2.3 million. Many of them are doing blue-collar work, which comprise 20 per cent of our jobs.
The panel comprises:

Dr Laurel Teo, senior research fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies
Ms Chloe Huang, strategic director of recruitment platform OppTy
Mr Chow Keng Hai, senior hospitality executive and hospitality consultant
And to celebrate the new Chinese Year of the Rabbit, we have a bonus extra after the podcast with fengshui master Ken Koh. Listen on to how the rat, ox, rooster, dog and tiger might fare this year. And bosses, if you are still tussling with employees over the great return-to-office negotiation, Master Koh has advice for you.

S1E13: Reflecting at being happier in life and at work this year: Work Talk
Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get our tips on working smarter, getting ahead in your career and investing like a pro with ST's business correspondents and editors.
Host Krist Boo discusses happiness at work in this episode of Work Talk, a podcast to help you work smarter, think deeper and get ahead in your work life.
In the workplace, 80 per cent of workers say "yes" when asked if they enjoy their work, says Gallup chief executive, Mr Jon Clifton. But ask about their relationships with co-workers and their boss, and they start getting miserable. Can managers do anything that will make our lives less unhappy in 2023?
After a motorbike accident in Cambodia eight years ago, Mr Jason Lim spent 40 days in a coma. He was 24. The doctor had his death certificate prepared. How would an experience like this change your view of happiness?
His colleague at SGTech - marketing manager Ms Low Rui Yin - says she's always harried, annoyed, and wanting to be better, quicker, perfect. But this year, maybe the status quo is enough.
Join Krist Boo's conversation with Mr Lim, Ms Low and Mr Clifton. After all, it is tradition to start each year by throwing everything we can at happiness, just to raise the odds of being happy for the rest of the year, isn't it? Here's to a happy New Year for you.
Highlights (click/tap above):
0:06 The accident
1:39 The kancheong, or harried and excitable, Singaporean
2:23 Singapore, the emotionless society
8:53 The premature death certificate
10:30 Happiness and sadness

Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get our tips on working smarter, getting ahead in your career and investing like a pro with ST's business correspondents and editors.
Last week, I wore a back-plunging, tomato-coloured ball gown to the office. My boss asked if I had omelette for breakfast. He's so CUTE.

Her guests are O-Psych CEO and psychologist Hetal Doshi, and Ms Low Rui Yin, a millennial marketing manager at SGTech.
We promise that you'll never look at the boss the same way again.
Highlights (click/tap above):

2:16 How do you draw the line before love?
6:05 Are women bosses less attractive?
8:12 Do younger workers expect bosses to be friends?

S1E6: The Great Renegotiation: What do workers want? - Work Talk
Synopsis: Every first and third Monday of the month, get our tips on working smarter, getting ahead in your career and investing like a pro with ST's business correspondents and editors.
More than half of Singapore employees may quit their jobs this year if expectations of pay rise, career development, flexibility and more are not met, show surveys.
At the same time, economic numbers show that employers are facing spiraling prices, supply chain difficulties and fears of a global recession - while struggling to hire and keep workers in the tight labour market. The battle of many jobs and few talents is especially tough for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which hire 70 per cent of the local workforce.
In this episode, ST's journalists Krist Boo and Tay Hong Yi host Mr Kurt Wee and Mr Donavan Cheah to talk about what workers expect, what bosses want - and the opportunities one could get from working at a SME.
Mr Wee is the president of the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises. Mr Cheah is a cybersecurity executive and the founder of podcast Very Clear Cut.
Highlights (click/tap above):
04:23 Young professionals tend to think there are more opportunities "outside" and want to make bigger impact
07:43 SMEs offer young workers hands-on work and experience of initial growth
15:00 It is a partnership, but employees also have a right to ask for career progression
19:18 When will the job market stabilise?
25:32 What can an employer do to be exciting enough for an employee to commit five years?
