About
Welcome to Women at the Top of Telecoms and Tech, the podcast for women leading in the corporate world. I am Nicola Buckley, the coach for women leaders who are a real force for good and want to make a real difference in the corporate world without sacrificing family time, neglecting themselves or compromising who they are. I take my clients on a hugely transformational journey that really changes their life. I help them to really step into their values and find out who they truly are at their heart. I help them to find their way to lead, and I help them to step past any beliefs or stories that are holding them back. This really is a podcast for women who are change-makers, who are fire starters, and they're on a quest to challenge and change the corporate world. And they dream big and they want to leave a legacy. It can be lonely at the top. It doesn't need to be anymore. Ep 072: The Double Bind Dilemma For Women in Leadership

In this week’s episode, we're going to be talking about the double bind dilemma for women in leadership. The old saying you’re damned if you do, and you're damned if you don’t really sums it up. For women, there's this double bind in leadership that you are either too soft and you are too compassionate and you let people get away with things or rough ride over you, or you are too tough. In which case you are assertive, you are aggressive. You can be a bit of a bitch, but the main point is that you are never just right. You're never exactly the right amount of whatever you need to be.  So, I’m going t be focusing on the three different predicaments at the heart of it of this dilemma and how businesses can help. Here are the highlights: (04:01) Extreme perceptions of women leaders (07:22) How do we get past this challenge? Ep 069: 4 Steps to Develop a Gender Pay Gap Action Plan

In this week’s episode, I'm going to be talking about something that I think is really, really important to tech and telecom organisations. I'm gonna be outlining four steps to developing a gender pay gap action plan.  All organisations that are of a certain size need to create a gender pay gap report each year as part of their annual report. Having a gender pay gap report shows a commitment and an investment to closing the gender pay gap. This is obviously going to impact your share price, it's going to impact how you are viewed by your shareholders and also by your consumers. It's becoming more and more important to become an organisation with a social conscience.   Here are the highlights: (02:33) It’s incredibly powerful to have a gender pay gap action plan (05:22) Set up ways of monitoring information (08:07) Consult and engage (11:01) Revise, assess and embed your action plan (13:11) Allow enough time  Listen and subscribe to the podcast now, and find out more about me at www.nicolaskorko.com Follow me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-buckley-strongher/ Download the Overwhelm to On Fire Checklist here: https://nicolaskorko.com/overwhelm-to-on-fire-checklist/ Contact my through Speakpipe here: https://www.speakpipe.com/femaleleadersonfirepodcast  For more details on how to work with me Go too www.nicolaskorko.com Or email nicola@nicolaskorko.com

Ep 068: What Men Can Do to Support Women in Telecoms

This week, we're going to be talking about what men can do to support women in tech and telecoms. I just want to start off today by being really, really clear about where we stand at the moment with the lack of gender parity, the gender pay gap and the lack of gender equality, we don't put any of the blame on men, this isn't a judgment on their position, not at all. But there are more John as CEOs than there are women, there is a 136-year gender pay gap and there are still numerous complaints around sexual harassment. So, men need to be part of the solution because women will never achieve equity in the workplace or in life if they're the only gender working towards it.  Here are the highlights: (05:12) Understand what privilege is (07:45) Gender and equality come up in more than one form (10:46) Advocate for fair workplace policies (14:02) Take the parental leave (14:51) Offer to mentor or sponsor (16:52) Be mindful of harassment (18:09) Give women credit for their ideas (20:10) Don’t interrupt  (21:16) Speak up    Listen and subscribe to the podcast now, and find out more about me at www.nicolaskorko.com Follow me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-buckley-strongher/ Download the Overwhelm to On Fire Checklist here: https://nicolaskorko.com/overwhelm-to-on-fire-checklist/ Contact my through Speakpipe here: https://www.speakpipe.com/femaleleadersonfirepodcast  For more details on how to work with me Go too www.nicolaskorko.com Or email nicola@nicolaskorko.com

Ep 065: 10 Benefits of Gender Parity for Organisations

In today's episode, we're gonna be talking about something that I am really passionate about. It's at the heart of the work that I do within my coaching and consulting business, it’s the benefits of gender equality within organisations. We have made huge progress over the last couple of years that are really supporting women. Things like flexible working, policies around compassionate leave for miscarriages and also menopause support. There are a lot more things in place but that is off the back of really going backwards during lockdown. The story for women through lockdown is that they tend to step into the breach and carry more of the invisible load at home. So juggling huge roles at work with homeschooling, keeping things ticking along at home and all of the invisible load that goes with it. This actually meant that the gender pay gap went from 100 years to 136 years. So what that means is, if everything carries on the way it is within organisations, the gender pay gap will be closed within 136 years. Women are still routinely underpaid compared with men when filling the same roles   Here are the highlights: (10:49) It will lead to a better economy (12:20) Improved productivity (15:02) Increased growth and innovation (17:57) More flexible working (20:05) A more stable workforce (22:39) Happier employees (23:36) Improved customer targeting (25:09) Better quality of life (26:02) Consumers care about a company’s ethics and social responsibility Listen and subscribe to the podcast now, and find out more about me at www.nicolaskorko.com Follow me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-buckley-strongher/ Download the Overwhelm to On Fire Checklist here: https://nicolaskorko.com/overwhelm-to-on-fire-checklist/ Contact my through Speakpipe here: https://www.speakpipe.com/femaleleadersonfirepodcast For more details on how to work with me Go too www.nicolaskorko.com Or email nicola@nicolaskorko.com

Ep 063: The Impact of Leading as Yourself with Jake Morrison

This week, I am joined by Jake Morrison. Jake is the Chief Executive at Citizens Advice Wokingham in Berkshire. At 18 he was the youngest elected politician in the UK joining Liverpool City Council in 2011 and working as a Member of Parliament at 19. He is open about living with mental ill-health, having Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder, C-PTSD and ADHD. His style of leadership is completely true and real. It’s almost beyond authentic leadership. This is leadership where you are showing up with how you are feeling. You're showing up with empathy and understanding, and you are also showing up with vulnerability and sharing the truth of what's going on for you. And that's when you are at your most powerful because you set that as a culture, you create that role model for everyone else in your organisation.   Here are the highlights: (06:12) Jake’s story (14:33) Being a CEO at such a young age (23:28) I feel that our team massively care (30:20) Becoming a mental health first aid instructor (36:04) The health and safety executive stress survey (41:51) How has his mental health journey helped him grow into his CEO role (47:01) It’s about stigma (55:05) The importance of having empathy (56:20) Jake’s final message   Listen and subscribe to the podcast now, and find out more about me at www.nicolaskorko.com Follow me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-buckley-strongher/ Download the Overwhelm to On Fire Checklist here: https://nicolaskorko.com/overwhelm-to-on-fire-checklist/ For more details on how to work with me Go too www.nicolaskorko.com Or email nicola@nicolaskorko.com   About Jake: Jake is 29, from Liverpool, and is Chief Executive at Citizens Advice Wokingham in Berkshire. Ep 054: The Power of Job Sharing

This week, I’m joined by two fantastic women, Hannah Hall-Turner and Rachel Maguire who together are the co-founders of The Job Share Pair. Both women had great careers and reached the role of HR Directors and coincidentally they had their children at similar times. When the time came to return to work they found it difficult to find the right part-time job. So, they suggested a job share, which at their senior level was very unusual. They made it work incredibly well and are here to talk about their business and the benefits of job sharing.   Here are the highlights: (05:25) Their background story (10:19) Where are we in the corporate world of job sharing? (20:58) Making that shift to job sharing (26:30) Myth busting around job sharing (36:05) What makes a job share work in your experience? (41:46) What’s your profile in a job-sharing partnership?   Listen and subscribe to the podcast now, and find out more about me at www.nicolaskorko.com Follow me on Linked In here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-buckley-strongher/ Download the Overwhelm to On Fire Checklist here: https://nicolaskorko.com/overwhelm-to-on-fire-checklist/ For more details on how to work with me Go too www.nicolaskorko.com Or email nicola@nicolaskorko.com   Recruitment website mentions: Investing in Women: https://investinginwomen.co.uk/ Daisy Chain:  https://daisy-chain.com/ Valued Recruitment: https://www.youarevalued.co.uk/   About The Job Share Pair: Hannah and Rachel met over 10 years ago whilst working in the HR department of a large, fast-paced, high volume, real estate services firm, meeting as colleagues and becoming firm friends. They progressed up the corporate ladder quickly, achieving the role of HR Director, loving the influence they had at a strategic level to improve business results and impact upon the employee experience.  They had their first babies 6 days apart and whilst on their respective maternity leaves discussed their desire to achieve work-life balance with their new family commitments. With their ambition, drive and commitment, they didn't want to leave a career and qualifications they had worked so hard for, or miss the precious "firsts" with their babies. Job sharing seemed a perfect solution! They broached the idea of a job share with their line manager to each work 3 days per week with one critical cross-over day, and after many discussions and much planning, they became the first job share duo in the UK arm of that Fortune 500 firm. This gave them the work-life balance that they had hoped for,  and as a result, they felt a duty to shout about the benefits to help others.  As the arrangement was new to them and their business, they began researching best practice, networking with job sharers and other flexible workers and allies and soon realised the rarity of job sharing allowing for a route back into work following maternity leave. They passionately believe that this is a hugely missed opportunity for business and working women the world over. Their Instagram page @thejobsharepair was born first and foremost to share their experience, best practice, useful practical tips and profile other job sharers to educate and inspire others about the power of job sharing. Currently, at over 1,250 followers, Hannah and Rachel post 6 times a week, highlighting case studies, reports and research, as well as personal experiences and those of their network, with an aim to increase awareness of job sharing and the benefits it can bring to individuals, organisations and the community.  Hannah and Rachel are proud and qualified members of the CIPD. Both accomplished HR leaders and Board Members, they are collaborative, communicative and pioneers for continuous positive change.  They are passionate about stamping out flexism at work and making flexible working options accessible for all.  Their ambition is for more people to access meaningful, progressive, senior roles through job sharing, encouraging a truly diverse workforce through flexibility.  Contact The Job Share Pair: Website: https://www.thejobsharepair.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thejobsharepair/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thejobsharepair

Ep 050: Five Ways Leaders Live to Their Fullest Potential with Margaret Weniger

This week, I’ve got the brilliant Margaret Weniger joining me, she is the founder of Rising Tide after a 10-year career in sales leadership. Margaret is someone who has been in the corporate world, knows the challenges and understands the lived experience of women at the very top. Margaret has interviewed women at the very top of organisations, across a range of professions to really understand what these leaders share. What do they have in common? What’s made them so successful? What’s helped them fulfil all that potential that they have? Through these interviews, Margaret has produced five ways that leaders live to their fullest potential. Here are the highlights: (05:14) Margaret’s background (10:40) It’s all about balance (12:30) The five ways that leaders live to their fullest potential (13:17) Number One: They had a strong career crew (13:47) Number Two: They are proficient networkers (18:07) Number Three: Understand what matters (26:42) Number Four: Listening to their intuition (32:55) Number Five: Open-ended career goals (41:47) Where can people start to make a change? Rising Tide was created for two purposes: to create exposure and build a community for the people who believe we need to change the business world. Throughout her career, the unchanging theme was being the only female in the room. The higher she climbed she hoped to wield her influence to impact change not just within her org but within her company and profession. She became increasingly aware that the only way to truly make a change was to make this mission her career. As the founder of Rising Tide, Margaret is on a mission to create balance of masculine and feminine power within companies to create collaborative, successful, and sustainable environments built for human beings rather than ideal employees. In order to do this, women must be elevated and empowered to show up as themselves and live in their fullest potential. For this to happen, it starts with each one of us individually doing the work. We must first understand ourselves so we can transform the world around us. Rising Tide serves as a catalyst by providing exposure and community to enable women to  live their fullest potential. As women grow, the tide rises and the story changes.   Contact Margaret: Website: thisisrisingtide.com Instagram: @risingtidepodcast LinkedIn: @margaretweniger Podcast: Rising Tide Podcast   Book Mentions: Think Again by Adam Grant Emotional Agility by Dr. Susan David

Ep 021: Asking for a Pay Rise

This week, I am going to help you ask for a pay rise and really the theme is if you don’t ask, you don’t get. If you're not asking for what you're worth, or if you're not negotiating at the beginning of a job, what you're worth, that's you not owning your value. What I often see women do when they come to work with me is they've taken on more and more, their role has become bigger but there has been no change in their job title or their salary to go with it. Here are the highlights: (04:48) 60% of women say they have never negotiated with an employer over their salary  (07:41) Women tend to start their first job at a lower level on a lower salary (10:05) Why do women find it so hard to ask for a pay rise? (17:28) Over the course of your career, you could lose up to 1 million pounds (19:23) Currently, it would take 136 years to close the gender pay gap (22:50) Take credit, own your self-promotion and your value (25:42) Think about the timing of when you are asking for a pay rise (28:25) Think about what is holding you back   Follow me on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicola-buckley-strongher/   Download the Overwhelm to On Fire Checklist here: https://nicolaskorko.com/overwhelm-to-on-fire-checklist/   For more details on how to work with me: Go to www.nicolaskorko.com Or email nicola@nicolaskorko.com

This week, I’m going to be talking about owning your own voice and speaking up. I think it's something that we as women can all struggle with and I know for me, even now, I can still struggle to say what I want and what I need.
