Why am I unproductive?
Can you believe it is August??
It seems the year is flying by and we find ourselves moving into the second half of the year.
We find ourselves having all sorts of frenetic energy as we are coming back off of vacations and preparing for kids to go back to school.
Businesses are often doing their forecasts for what the rest of the year is going to look like as well.
And for many we assess how productive we have been in the first half of the year as we prepare for the second half.
With all of those thoughts, it is very easy to start to measure our success by the productivity we are having.
Now there is nothing necessarily wrong with this.
However, like with so many things, our thoughts surrounding productivity can be a sign of burnout if left unregulated.
As you know, sometimes our brains are not very nice to us. Unchecked your brain can lead to a state of over-productive stress that leads to feelings of imposter syndrome and burnout.
If you find yourself looking around and constantly seeing more things on the checklist, this episode is for you.
If you always think that you haven’t done enough even in the midst of high levels of objective productivity, this episode is for you.
If you get to the weekend and have no energy for your family or beloved hobbies, this episode is definitely for you.
Today we crack the code of what is going on in your brain with these thoughts of simultaneous productivity and anxiety and some ways you can start to do something about them to lower the feelings of overwhelm.
Come join us for today's discussion:
The common symptoms of burnout and high functioning depression
What your brain and body could be telling you with these symptoms
Tools my clients implement to regain control of the overwhelm

Why do we buy what we buy? Exploring the brain science behind consumer choices with Maria Platusic.
Have you ever wondered why you buy the things you buy?
I mean sometimes, you buy certain things simply due to lack of choice or because it fills a very immediate need.
But often, we have options and time to think about it.
So how do we choose from the veritable sea of options available to us?
Maria Platusic is a brand marketing expert with expertise in the science of design and branding and today we are going to discuss the brain science of branding and design.
You know those ubiquitous golden arches that seem to be on the corner of every other block in the city and your kids ALWAYS want you to stop at?
What if I told you there is very intentional brain science behind the color scheme for that brand?
Yellow is proven to create the emotion most commonly associated with joy in the brain and Red is shown to trigger your appetite response.
Those golden arches are quite literally scientifically calibrated to make you happy and hungry so you are more likely to come grab a burger or some fries.
Another example is the color blue.
It is known to trigger feelings of dependability and you can see prolific use of the color blue in popular brands such as in the credit card, computing or car industries.
Understanding some of the science of branding can help you not only to break the rules and make your brand stand out but also make sure you are a more informed consumer.
Come join us to learn about:
The impact of colors and shapes on brand design
How to leverage well known colors and shapes in your own business branding

Am I an Introvert, Extrovert or something else?
“So, are you an Introvert or an Extrovert?”
Have you been asked this question before?
Maybe you have asked this question of yourself as you pondered your social interactions for the day.
Regardless of how you first encountered some form of this question the concepts of Introvert and Extrovert have become innocuous in western society.
You see human’s love to label and categorize things.
I don’t make the rules- that’s just the way it is.
In 1923, Carl Jung the famed Swiss Psychiatrist published a paper where he brought the terms into mainstream usage within the field of Psychology.
Now we all know Introverts like to keep to themselves and Extroverts love to be around people, right?
Well…. it’s not that simple.
As so many things in brain and social science, there is a lot more nuance than a simple binary concept can convey.
For example, did you know that most people have a behavior flip in certain social situations?
The extrovert might withdraw unexpectedly from a social situation one would assume they would thrive in.
The introvert suddenly can become the life of the party when they are surrounded by close friends or the conversation turns to a topic that they feel extremely confident in.
And on today’s episode I will also be discussing the relatively new term in the field known as the “Ambivert.”
Today we will talk about:
The unspoken messages and preferences our culture communicates about Introverts vs Extroverts
Understanding what the terms actually mean as opposed to what we have been socialized to think they mean
What is an Ambivert

46- Common Thought Errors
“I should have known better…”
This is one of the cruelest things our brain can say to us.
This life is one of experience and learning.
It’s about growing and hopefully moving past our mistakes.
Telling yourself essentially “I shouldn’t have had to learn that; I should have already known it” is antithetical to the process.
Unfortunately, your brain is REALLY good at creating those unhelpful thoughts.
In fact, on any given day, it is estimated that our brains have 60,000 thoughts.
And because our brains are evolved to keep us safe, approximately 80% of the thoughts we have are negative.
That’s 48,000 negative thoughts…. PER DAY.
So many of our brain’s natural processes are designed around fear responses.
And remember from some of our earlier work, when those thoughts are continuous repeated, they can turn into conditioned beliefs.
So what are these thought errors Julie?
Some of the big ones I have seen in my clients are things like:
“I magnify things too much. I overstate and under-deliver both in my personal and professional life”
Another I see frequently is “Overgeneralization.”
Things like “This ALWAYS happens” or “I NEVER succeed.”
Today we will go through these and several more that I commonly see in my counseling & coaching practice.
But it’s not all bad.
I am also excited to share a powerful and simple mental tool you can use every day in real time to challenge negative thoughts.
It seems really straightforward and basic and it is.
But don’t let that fool you into thinking simple does not mean effective.
This exercise has been very effective in helping my clients change their conditioned beliefs and unlock new avenues of success.
So let’s all take a deep breath together and dive into our Common Thought Errors together.
Today we cover:
Common Thought Errors that create our conditioned beliefs over time.
My own history with some of these very same thoughts.
The simple 3 step tool we can use to start challenging and changing our thought errors.

34- Let's Talk Imposter Syndrome
Welcome back my friends!
Early in my coaching career, I had an extremely accomplished, high-level professional client with an all-too-common problem.
They were top of their graduating class. They had quickly moved up the corporate ladder in a very competitive field.
On paper, they basically were in the middle of a career that many of us would call a “Unicorn.”
Yet they did not believe they actually deserved the fruit of their extremely hard work…
They assumed that any day, someone at work would prove them a fraud.
They were sure a mistake was going to oust them to their colleagues as not really deserving the success they had.
How could this happen you might think?
Sadly, it can happen all too easily…
Early in their life, someone told them that they simply had gotten lucky when they had accomplished something.
And with that one ill-conceived comment, a deep-rooted belief was created in their mind….
The doubt festered into something we know as Imposter Syndrome….
Thankfully we were able to work out a plan to confront and deconstruct this belief.
We created a plan to attack these false thoughts and the feelings associated with them.
We rebuilt the confidence in their own self, their competence and gave them the tools they needed to thrive.
I can’t wait to share more with you today on this far too common problem.
