Ep #82: Where do you want to STEER your life?
Where do you want to STEER your life?
Stuff happens in the world.
Thoughts occur.
Emotions are created.
Energy is spent.
Results are seen.
This is the basic model of life, taught over centuries, by major philosophers, religious leaders, and thought leaders.
The day I learned that all of my pain is caused by my own thoughts, my life changed.
If my thoughts are creating my pain… then I must be able to change them and get a different feeling?
True!
All thoughts are optional.
The stuff that happens in the world is always neutral.
Two human brains can have different thoughts and emotions based on the SAME set of events.
This is proof that the events are neutral.
The results you decide to create in life, are depended on the thoughts you choose.

Ep #81: Marriage Crisis
“O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion. And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them unless they commit a clear immorality. And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good.” Quran 4:19

Ep #79: Die with Nothing.
This episode is inspired from book "Die with Zero" by Bill Perkins.
Once people learn that they can be millionaires just by saving a couple of hundred dollars per month, they sometimes go into extra frugal mode.
Not spending money on things they would enjoy and saving every penny.
This life is temporary, it is a test in itself.
We came into this world with nothing, and we will leave this world with nothing.
Money is a tool. It can help to maximize our experience on earth.
We want to make intentional choices with our money, spending on experiences and things we enjoy.
The ultimate goal is to die with zero, passing down the wealth of the less fortunate and to the next generation.
Life is fragile. Pandemic is our biggest lesson.
The biggest assets are time and relationships.
Even the richest person on the planet cannot buy more time.
If money can help you work less and spend more time doing things you enjoy the most..then money has done its job.
This is why the first module on “money is easy course” is all on the money mindset. To help with scarcity beliefs and really figure out what happiness is.

Ep #78: Estate Planning with Meha Siyam Esq.
“It is the duty of a Muslim who has anything to bequest not to let two nights pass without writing a will about it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This is not only a requirement in Islam but a necessity today.
Only two things are certain in life, #taxes and #death.
Planning for death requires setting up a will.
In many cases, a will is not enough. To avoid #probate, and loss of money to courts, accountants, & lawyers, one must set up a trust.
In this episode, I speak with @siyamlawcenter, Meha Siyam Esq. to discuss why this is a crucial obligation that must not be avoided.
Meha can be reached at siyamlawcenter@gmail.com or on on instagram.

Ep #77: Forgiveness
Forgiveness is a conscious, deliberate decision to stop feeling angry or resentful towards someone for an offense.
Forgiveness does not mean forgetting or condoning.
Forgiveness is about us.
The requirements are to stop feeling angry and resentful towards someone.
The reason why people don’t forgive is wrongfully believing that by holding a grudge … we are hurting the other person.
This is absolutely wrong.
Others do not experience our feelings.
The other person doesn’t have to do anything different for you to feel better.
Forgiveness does not mean that you drop your boundaries.
Forgiveness doesn’t imply that you have to live in a toxic environment.
You can move away and forgive.
Forgiveness is extremely emphasized in Islam.
Forgive people so that Allah forgives you.
"And we did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And we have made some of you [people] as a trial for others--will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, seeing." [Surah Al-Furqan 25:20]
This life is full of tests and trials. Many times we are tested through people in our life.
"And we did not send before you, [O Muhammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And we have made some of you [people] as a trial for others--will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, seeing." [Surah Al-Furqan 25:20]
If we keep blaming others for whatever they did or try to prove they were wrong, there is no momentum forward.

Ep# 73: Money - A Muslim Kid‘s Guide to Getting Wealthy
Money - A Muslim Kid’s Guide to Getting Wealthy
“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” -Malala Yousafzai
As my daughter and I were speaking about money during our lock-down, she insisted that other kids must learn about this too. She came up with the idea to share this information in a book.
This book is a pandemic, maternity lock-down blessing.
Albert Einstein stated that Compounding is the greatest gift to mankind.
The earlier the kids learn to invest, the greater the return.
Some ideas to teach kids how to manage their money are:
Showing them that things cost money. Let them use their allowance money to make purchases at stores, by physically giving the money to the cashier.
Give allowance. I personally do not believe in giving commissions, which is money for chores. These are normal parts of daily living, you don’t get rewarded for folding your own clothes or washing the dishes.
Emphasize giving. A small portion of our savings does not belong to us, it belongs to those in need.
Use Jars for saving, spending, and sharing. Letting them develop smart habits from the beginning.
Have a family budget meeting.
Let them think about different ways of making money. And teach them to start retirement accounts early (the magic of compounding).
We are grateful for the positive response, please tune into our conversation on creating this book.
Special thanks to Aisha Gohar, please click here to see her Instagram profile.
And Thank you Mrs. Hashimi for her inspiring podcast for kids.

Ep #72: Wealthy Muslim Kids
Raising the next generation of wealthy-minded, strong Muslims carries a tremendous responsibility. Luckily, we live in an era where technology has made sharing knowledge and skills feasible.
Our lives became richer after we discovered the "Once upon a Crescent" podcast during the pandemic.
Mrs. Hashimi, a former teacher, started this podcast, Islamic bedtime stories for kids.
These are NOT just ANY stories.
She has a beautiful, creative style to share the wealth of knowledge from the hadith, the Quran, and current events.
My kids love this podcast, the only downside is, I do not get to listen to my audiobooks or podcasts. Though, even as an adult, I am able to take so much away from these stories.
Please be sure to follow Mrs. Hashmi on Instagram

Ep #69: I've never done this before!!
I’ve never had a baby while having covid.
I’ve never been a mom to 3 kids.
I’ve never been in social isolation.
I’ve never had to feed, pump, feed (tripel feed).
I've never had to stretch my baby's wounds.
This episode is on productivity.
The challenges that I am facing to overcome the brain barriers to living an intentional life.
Money is 20% knowledge and 80% mindset.
Achieving the right mindset is truly being wealthy.
Acquiring the right mindset is continuous work.
Our brains like to be efficient (lazy), seek pleasure, and avoid pain.
I re-started my journey on productivity by reading "The Productive Muslim" by Mohammad Faris.
This book is full of gems, I'll share more words of wisdom in later episodes.

Ep #64: Let Adults be...
We usually carry around an instruction book for how the world should behave so we can feel better.
Instruction manuals for ourselves and for other people around us.
-My husband should come home on time.
-He should take the trash out.
And when the other person does not follow our manual or doesn't do it right, then we are distraught.
We go back to emotional childhood where we are blaming and depending on others for our emotions.
The worst is when we have manuals for ourselves and then beat ourselves up for not living up to our expectations.
How can you take full responsibility for your life and take all the power back? Tune into this episode.
p.s. I will be taking a little maternity break to heal, connect with my family for the next 3-4 months.

Ep #63: Don't leave..
At times, we are in a rush to leave a situation to make things better for ourselves.
Leave an unhappy marriage to find the next prince charming.
Leave a job, due to a "bad" boss.
Move to a new location to find happiness.
When we do things in a rush and desperation, we are making decisions from a negative place without really exploring what is making us unhappy.
Most of the time we end up in a similar situation again.
Why? Because the external world is not responsible for how we feel. We end up giving too much power to the external world.
To get our life back:
We need to learn to manage our emotions internally. Make our decision from a place of responsibility, because only we are responsible for how we feel.
(Disclaimer: NOT speaking about abusive marriages. If you or someone you know is in an abusive marriage, please seek a professional therapist.)

Ep #62: Don't Criticize
We are speaking about creating healthy relationships this month.
Relationships are one of the greatest assets we have. We want a healthy relationship to help achieve our goals, and to avoid big financial setbacks including a divorce.
Relationships are our thoughts about someone. They are not dependent on how one behaves. This is the secret to the universe.
You can improve your relationship with someone by having great thoughts about them.
When we start to complain and criticize, people become defensive.
I hope you enjoy this episode, do let me know what you think.

EP #61: Your mother-in-law is lovable.
Your mother-in-law is lovable.
Wealth is an abundance of valuable assets.
What are some of the most valuable things?
Yourself - your mental and physical health
Relationships
Money: Money is a tool that helps us to create more time for the things that really matter.
We want healthy & beautiful relationships to live a fulfilled life.
Healthy relationships help us grow & achieve our goals.
Also, a divorce can be a very costly process.
When it comes to relationships, one of the most common things I see people suffering with is hate and resentment for others.
It can be for a spouse, parents, or in-laws.
The argument is that this person did me so much wrong, that I could NEVER love them!
I could NEVER forgive them.
But the truth is that you are NOT hurting the other person by hating and resenting them, you are HURTING YOURSELF.
Who feels your emotions? Only you.

#60: Increasing self-confidence
Increasing self-confidence comes from changing your thoughts about yourself.
You can increase it by considering the possibility of what you can create in the future. The more certain you are of the possibility, the more confidence you will have moved towards it.
Afraid of failure.
Afraid of disappointment.
Imagine your life if you were willing to feel both of these feelings without resistance.

When you have more self-confidence, you will:
set more goals
take more action
talk to more people
take more risks
achieve more
believe beyond your current capability and capacity
live into your future
Our minds can keep us from taking actions. We are provided with excuses such as we do not have time, we don't have the ability to conquer our desires. But these are just thoughts. You always have enough time. You are able to plan and live your life the way you want.

Ep #58: Three reasons why you lack self-confidence
Why do we lack self-confidence?
We don’t trust ourselves.
We are afraid of feeling our emotions.
Our opinion of ourselves is very low.
This month we are spending on developing self-confidence. Self-confidence allows us to take action to develop wealth. Most setbacks are in our own minds.

Ep #57: Confidence Vs. Self-Confidence
The month of October will be dedicated to developing confidence and self-confidence around money.
Money is 80% mindset and only 20% actual knowledge.
One of the reasons we don't take action is because we lack the ability to trust ourselves.
Confidence comes from experience.
Self-confidence comes BEFORE we actually learn a skill.

Ep #53: Creating Money
How money is created?
Everything starts with a thought! You have thought about how much money you want is the first step.
If you’ve watched the Secret documentary, the main focus is the thought. However, a thought by itself will not actually help you create money.
We can sit and dream about having millions of dollars but that may not come unless we take the actions to create it.
Our actions come from our feelings, we do things or avoid doing things because of the feelings we are having. And guess what? Our thoughts create our feelings.

Ep #47: Divorce & Money
This is a conversation with an amazing attorney, Amina Rashad, Esq.
“And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect.” Al-Talaq, 65:2-3
Marriage is highly encouraged in Islam. It has many beautiful aspects.
However, a relationship can become unhealthy. Thus, divorce is not only allowed, but a woman has a right to get a divorce.
Divorce can be detrimental to once finances.
You can start a marriage with a strong foundation by discussing many of the issues that might arise later.
Who will handle the finances? Is the wife expected to contribute financially?
It’s never late to consider a post-nuptial agreement.
These discussions do not mean that you do not trust your partner, but it can help to protect both parties in case things go wrong.
It can provide peace of mind and safety.
I highly encourage that all couples should seek legal advice before starting a matrimonial journey.
Amina Rashad, Esq. is licensed in NY and NJ. You can reach her through her business page or her website.

Well, the 11 years of the bull market ended with this new virus scare. We are officially in the bear market, with >20% drop. What does this all mean? What lessons can we learn?

Ep #30: Mutual Funds or ETFs
What is the difference between ETFs (Exchange-Traded funds) and Mutual funds?
Similarities :
Both are professionally managed group of stocks or bonds.
Both carry less risk than buying 1 stock
Both offer a variety of investment options
Both can follow an index funds, e.g. the S&P 500.
Differences :
Can buy an ETF for the price of 1 share. There is a minimum investment requirement for mutual funds, around $2-$3k.
For ETFs you can purchase them at market price. However, mutual fund price is determined at the end of the day.
No automatic investing or withdrawal option available for ETF.
ETFs might be better tax efficient, because the capital gains tax is realized when you sell the ETF. ETFs are more passively managed. For Mutual funds, they are rebalanced, managers buy and sell securities, generating higher capital gains.
Example of top performing ETFs and Mutual funds :
ETFs
Mutual Funds
VOO. Follows the S&P 500 index. Expense Ratio : (.04%). Current share price : ~$305.
VFINX. Also S&P 500 index. Expense Ratio : (.14%). Minimum Requirement: $3k.
FZROX. Fidelity total market index fund. No trading fee, no minimum requirement.
2. FDFAX. Fidelity select consumer stapler.
Minimum requirement: $2k. (ER : .77%)
VHT. Tracks health care index. No minimum requirement.
3. VGHCX. Vanguard Health Care index fund.
Minimum investment : $3k. Expense ratio: .34%.

Ep #29: Authentic Self
One of my friends recently asked me how I have my life put together ? And the honest truth is that I do not.
I struggle. I worry. I am learning.
The skills that I have learned over the last couple of years have really helped. I am glad to say that I am at a spot where I am content with myself and my surroundings, however, I still have a lot to learn. One of the major secrets I’ve learned is that we cannot change other people, we have to learn to adapt to our environment.
As I was learning all these things, I wanted to share this with all, thus the reason for starting this podcast.
In this day and age, it seems like we are living fake, pretend lives. There are two examples :
People who do not have wealth, are living in debt, are pretending like they are living rich lives by showing the expensive food, clothes, bags, and vacations.
On the other hand, we have true wealthy people, who have figured out the secrets of life, they have found success with money and in relationships, but are not willing to share. Their reasons for not sharing vary, from the fear of being judged because they have it all, vs. fears of jealousy.
And my view on this is that these are both lies. Whether we pretend to be living happy lives when we are sad, or we are pretending to be living unhappy lives when we do have it all.

Ep #28 : Investing for Kids
Teaching financial responsibilities to kids is crucial. It is unfortunate that most states do not require financial education during school. Financial knowledge is a vital skill. It is never too early to start saving for you kids. College costs keep creeping up. If your child has a job, you can start a retirement account for them. One of the major advantage kids have is that money has long time to grow, given they may not need the money for retirement for another 50-60 years.
Some accounts to consider are :
-529s - every state offers them. Some states also offer tax deduction benefit. However, the major benefit of these accounts comes from tax-free growth and tax-free withdrawal. One of the major expense in this country is taxes! This will help avoid that.
-Roth Retirement account - Again, major benefit being tax-free growth and withdrawal. These accounts are also wonderful in that you do not have to reach retirement age to use them. You maybe able to use some portion towards buying your first house.
-UGMA and UTMA are similar to irrevocable trusts. The money does not belong to you anymore, and full control transfers over to the children at age 18 or 21 depending on the state.
-Other regular custodial investing accounts are also allowed for kids. They can learn to purchase their favorite companies like Disney.

Ep #27: Financial Resolutions for 2020
Podcast #27 : Financial Resolutions for 2020
What are your 2020 resolutions ? I like to revisit goals/resolutions everyday, every week, and every month. Everyday is a new beginning, do not get discouraged and abandon the resolutions for the entire year if you are not keeping up with them after January. Re-evaluate, and see if you still want to accomplish those goals and what you can do differently to achieve them.
It is also helpful to look at our prior year and see what our best investments were. My best investment for 2019 was learning to manage my own emotions. This has improved my whole life. Once you learn to recognize your emotions : sadness, anger, anxiety, happiness, this gives us power. Then being able to just sit with our emotions, instead of reacting with actions like over spending, over eating, yelling back, is empowering.
For me, the cycle was feeling awful for whatever reason, eating to try to feel better, feeling guilty about the eating, then eating again, it was a perpetual cycle.
I am glad that I invested my time in reading different books and listening to different podcasts. I am still learning, but this was a major accomplishment.
My big suggestions for next year :
Invest in yourself → it can be time set out for yourself to read a book, workout, or do nothing!
Read a financial book, I recommend : https://wealthymuslimwomen.us/product/the-bogleheads-guide-to-investing/
Check out the book section for my other favorite books. Books open up a new world.
Track your spending : knowing where your money is going is the key to better finance. You can do it for free on a paper, google sheets, microsoft, mint. Or other apps like YNAB.
Calculate your net worth. I have been doing it almost monthly now since entering positive net worth phase, but you can do it every 6 months. This is an easy calculation, assets minus your liabilities. https://wealthymuslimwomen.us/net-worth-calculator/
Learn to pay yourself first, start saving. Get in the habit, even if it is little money.
Make a plan to pay-off your debt. My goal is to be under 100k for my student loans by December 2020.
Learn to invest your money. Money sitting in cash at home loses value. Let your money work for you, instead of you working for your money. There are tremendous amount of resources out there for this.
Write your Will, this is highly emphasized in Islam. I want to review my will again and see if any changes are needed.
Lastly, money is very important, money buys us time to spend with our kids and our loved ones. We love money. But the point of money is to have time and spend it where we value it the most.
Some of my personal goals are : to learn quran again with tafseer and deeper understanding, gym 2-3x/ week, meditation, and continue to eat right.
For my Kids: discover new games with them. We are now learning chess. Jenga is our favorite. Also, deciding for school.
My couple goals with my husband : Planning date night dates, learn how to dance , more bicycle tours this year, iA.
For Wealthy Muslim Women: I want to take this to another level. I have big goals and aspirations.
I would love to hear what you are planning to do next year. Please do share.
Also, please subscribe and rate the podcast if you are enjoying. And do not forget to share it with your friends.

E #26: Weight Loss
Health is wealth. Our bodies, are one of the biggest assets we have. We must learn to take care of ourselves. Obesity can lead to many medical issues. We are aware of how to lose weight: we should not over-eat, we must avoid processed, junk food, high in sugar.
However, we are still not able to accomplish this. Food is pushed on us from every direction. You'll see food commercials everywhere. We are taught to eat when we are sad, we are taught to eat when we are happy. Prior to 90s, we mostly had breaks from food during the day, later snacks started being pushed as well. Now, our bodies do not get a break from eating throughout the day. The sugar also acts as addictive substance, raising dopamine. At the same time, this food not nourishing. Thus, our bodies are always hungry, asking for nourishing food. Food needed to survive is very little. What helped me with losing over 45 lbs is becoming more aware of my thoughts around food. Other crucial steps which helped me are :
*Sleeping at least 8 hours per night
*Drinking water, sometimes thirst cues are confused for hunger
*Intermittent fasting , Ramadan helped with this
*Not over-eating.
*over-coming scarcity mindset
*Exercise has tremendous amount of health benefits, however, it should not be used as vehicle for weight loss. We should aspire to exercise for the health benefits, including weight loss, but be aware of this turning into an excuse to eat anything.

Ep #25 : Becoming a physician
“Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” –Winston S. Churchill
The road to becoming a physician has not been an easy one.
-I cried to sleep on so many countless nights
-I felt isolated, working >80 hours per week, spending holidays away from family
-going through an abusive marriage during residency did not help with the circumstances
-becoming a mom is the greatest gift I have received. However, other challenges like: no maternity leave, being asked to breastfeed in the bathroom, having to trust strangers to take care of my most valuable possessions, were difficult to navigate through.
But was it all worth it? Absolutely!
Follow your passion. The road may not be easy, but it'll be worth it. Being an epileptologist was a dream career that I did not even know existed. Things will fall into places. I love it when my daughter pretends that she's "on call", or when she says that she's going to be a doctor just like her mom.

Ep #24: Money talk with your spouse
Podcast #24 : Speaking with Your Spouse about Money
Financial disagreements can increase the chances of divorce significantly. If you are having money problems, there may be other issues underlying it.
Some tips to navigate this :
Learn to agree to disagree. You will not 100% agree on all issues with another human being. This is not a problem, this is normal. It is OK to have some different opinions. Having different perspectives does not mean that you do not belong together.
Schedule these talks : Do not bring up the bothersome topic at every chance you get. This will ruin the relationship and your time at hand. Schedule either weekly, or monthly meetings to discuss these topics. Outside of this scheduled time, enjoy each other’s company. Do not bring up things that will stir trouble, you can make a habit of writing down the thoughts in a journal to discuss at the next meeting.
Talk about their money beliefs. How did their parents handle money? Were there money fights? Were they allowed to spend money as desired or very restricted? Discuss your own money beliefs. Our behavior is greatly impacted by our environment.
Come prepared. Bring your budget. Speak about your money mistakes.
Speak about your common goals. When would you like to retire? What vacations would your like to take? Do you want to send kids to public or private schools? Do you want to fund their higher education?
Last, but not least, always remember that your spouse is NOT the problem, the problem is the problem. You are trying to work on achieving common goals. Do not blame each other as a person, but discuss how the issue at hand might be solved. If one person is over-spending on shoes, clothes, or other items; it may lead to less money for other things as: financial independence, vacation budgets, education funds.
