Episode 4: Becoming a lawyer with Velo van Houden.
Born in the UK and raised in the Netherlands and Switzerland, Velo is a first-generation college student with a degree in psychology from UC Berkeley. Prior to law school, he worked as a legal assistant for a criminal defense attorney, and then as a research associate at an executive search firm in Los Angeles. At HLS, Velo was a team leader for the Harvard Law and Entrepreneurship Program (HLEP), technical editor for the Journal of Law and Gender, 1L student body representative, and president of his section activities committee. Short term, Velo plans to pursue his interests incorporate work and intellectual property in the private sector. Long-term, he hopes to create a foundation that helps homeless LGBTQ youth obtain safe housing, build community, and pursue higher education. Velo has a YouTube channel where he talks about his experience at Harvard Law School and provides tips, support and help to students who want to apply to Harvard.
Right now velo is fundraising for her mom, Suzanne. She needs to be hospitalized for covid, but the hospital requires a $5,000 down payment to be admitted. She is a fitness instructor who lives paycheck to paycheck and her savings wiped out as a result of pandemic lockdowns. He would be so grateful for any help.
