78. How Resilience became toxic, with Bruce Daisley
In this episode we're joined by Bruce Daisley, a leading voice on work culture who challenges the conventional wisdom around resilience.
He argues that the current emphasis on individual resilience in the workplace amounts to victim-blaming and overlooks systemic issues that create stress and burnout.
Join the conversation as we explore the limitations of resilience training, the collective nature of true resilience and the role of socialisation in fostering a resilient culture. We also discuss the critical importance of managerial training in addressing workplace challenges.
Bruce's insights are not just theoretical; they are grounded in practical examples, including the transformative impact of seemingly small actions like a receptionist's initiative in a corporate setting. This episode invites listeners to rethink resilience, emphasising community, connection, and systemic change as keys to a healthier work environment.

60. Behind the Smiles: Our Mental Health Journey.
Truth, Lies and Workplace Culture has always been about fostering open and honest conversations. Today, on World Mental Health Day, we're taking a step back from our usual format to share something deeply personal – our own mental health journeys.
Al and Leanne I first crossed paths as volunteers for Samaritans, a listening service that provides invaluable support to those who need it most. It was here that we found our shared passion for helping others access mental health resources and the importance of having a safe space to talk.
In this episode, we're peeling back the layers to reveal the stories behind the smiles. We're going to share our own experiences with mental health challenges, including moments of anxiety, burnout, and the immense pressure society often places on men to achieve success.
But, amidst the struggles, we'll also discuss the pivotal moments that led us to seek help, the support systems that made a difference, and the small steps we've taken towards improving our mental well-being.
We hope that by opening up about our own journeys, we can contribute to the broader conversation surrounding mental health and inspire our listeners to prioritise their mental well-being too.
So, join us for this candid and heartfelt conversation about mental health. We believe that sharing our stories can help break down the stigma and encourage others to seek the support they need.
Thank you for tuning in.

55. Protecting Financial Well-being Amid the Cost of Living Crisis
COME SEE US AT THE 6TH MAD WORLD SUMMIT - OCTOBER 12TH 2023.
The UK's Premier Event for Mental Health & Wellbeing Leaders
https://madworldsummit.com/
In today's episode, we're shining a spotlight on a critical issue - financial well-being in the midst of the cost of living crisis. We'll be discussing five red flags that may indicate your employees are facing financial challenges, and we have a panel of experts ready to shed light on these crucial matters.
Segment 1: You Don't Have the Data
Our first red flag points to the importance of data. Without accurate and up-to-date information on your employees' financial well-being, it's challenging to take meaningful action. Our experts will discuss the significance of collecting data and ways to do it effectively.
Segment 2: No One Is Talking About It
In this segment, we tackle the issue of silence. Often, financial struggles go unspoken, and as a result, they can escalate. We explore the role of open communication and how fostering a safe space for employees to discuss their financial concerns can make a significant difference.
Segment 3: Treating Symptoms, Not the Problem
One of the red flags that often goes unnoticed is treating symptoms rather than addressing the root causes of financial stress. We'll delve into the importance of identifying and solving underlying issues rather than just providing quick fixes.
Segment 4: Poorly Communicating Benefits
The benefits and support offered by employers can be a lifeline for employees facing financial challenges. However, if these benefits aren't effectively communicated, they might as well not exist. We'll discuss strategies for clear and effective communication.
Segment 5: Not Linking to Learning and Development
Our final red flag suggests that learning and development opportunities can play a crucial role in improving financial well-being. We'll explore how aligning these opportunities with your employees' financial goals can have a positive impact.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, financial well-being is not just a personal concern; it's a critical factor in employee satisfaction and overall business success. By paying attention to these five red flags, you can protect the financial well-being of your employees and foster a workplace culture that truly cares.
Stay tuned for some invaluable insights from our expert panel.

32. Women's Health: A Guide for Male Leaders
As male leaders, we understand that it can be challenging to discuss certain topics, especially when they are related to sensitive matters such as women's health. This episode is dedicated to addressing those questions you've always wanted to ask but were afraid to bring up.
These remarkable women bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion, and they are eager to help demystify the subject for our listeners. Our goal is to foster an open and honest conversation about women's health, empowering male leaders to be better informed and more empathetic in their approach towards their female colleagues and employees.
In this episode, our esteemed panel will shed light on a range of women's health topics, such as menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, and more. We will also explore the intersection between women's health and workplace culture, discussing how organizations can implement policies and practices that support the well-being of their female employees. Through this conversation, we hope to bridge the gap in understanding and create a more inclusive and supportive work environment for everyone.
Whether you're a male leader seeking guidance or simply someone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of women's health, we're confident that you'll walk away from this discussion with valuable insights and a new perspective.
Don't miss this opportunity to broaden your horizons and become a better ally to the women in your workplace!

22. The Untold Heartbreak of Male Leaders, with Jim Young
Toughen up. Be a man. Boys don’t cry.
Centuries of social conditioning have created a stigma around men’s mental health and burnout.
And it’s killing them.
75% of suicides are men. Suicide is the biggest cause of death among men under 50. Men experience higher rates of cancer, heart disease and addiction - physical health conditions associated with high-stress lifestyles. Men's mental health, in our workplaces, society and homes, is the conversation we should be having.
In a break from our normal format, this episode focuses on a conversation between Co-Host Al Elliott, and our expert guest, Jim Young. Just two 40-something guys discussing uncried tears, burnout and being very f@*king far from ok. It’s a conversation you’ve likely never heard before.
Join Al and Jim for an honest, vulnerable conversation about men’s mental health, including:
What does burnout look like for men?
The life-threatening risks of being a ‘tough guy’
Undoing 10,000 years of social conditioning
Ego, shame and being on top
The deadly ‘F Word’
Using intimacy to create sustainable success for you and your business

Sandy is the managing partner of Amrop UK, an Executive Search & Human Capital Advisory firm, and he also is a fully qualified practitioner for Hogan Development Surveys, which measure the behaviours and personalities of leaders.
