Episode 52: "Keep the phrase going" - a conversation with Charles Daval Trumpet player Charles Daval has held positions in some of North America’s most prestigious orchestras including the Boston Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony and the Seattle Symphony. His principal appointments have included the Boston Pops and the Solo Trumpet position of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 1993, Mr. Daval was appointed Professor of Trumpet at the University of Michigan. Mr. Daval moved to Pittsburgh in 1998 to enable his wife to accept the Principal Second Violin position in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Since the move he has been appointed Principal Trumpet of the Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater Orchestras and continues to maintain an active teaching and performing schedule. In the spring of 2008, Mr. Daval fulfilled a lifelong dream when he received the degree of Juris Doctor (Cum Laude) from the Duquesne University Law School, where he enrolled in the fall semester 2004. As a law student, Mr. Daval worked to secure benefits for Veterans and their families through his participation in the Duquesne University Veteran’s Benefits Clinic in 2006-07, and he participated in the Civil Rights Litigation Clinic at Duquesne University’s Center for the Bill of Rights. After passing the bar examination in the summer of 2008, Mr. Daval was admitted by the State Supreme Court to the bar of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In the winter of 2009 he passed bar exams in Colorado and Wyoming, and is admitted to the bars of both states. Highlights from his performing career include appearances on PBS broadcasts of “Evening at Pops” with conductor – composer John Williams and the Boston Pops from 1984 to 1988. In 1986, he was featured on Maryland Public Television’s “Live from Wolftrap” as cornet soloist with Keith Brion’s “New Sousa Band.” Additional appearances as soloist include concerts with the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Toronto Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the Naples Philharmonic, the Seattle Symphony, and the Carmel Bach Festival. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University, Mr. Daval went on to study with Vincent Cichowicz at Northwestern University where he earned his Masters Degree and was elected to the Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society. While in Chicago, he also performed with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and studied with Principal Trumpet of the Chicago Symphony, Adolph Herseth. The trumpet playing of Charles Daval has been met with much critical acclaim. The San Francisco Chronicle called him “downright sensational”, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer praised his “musical finesse and technical polish”. His performances on the piccolo trumpet at the Carmel Bach Festival hailed this response from the Monterey Peninsula Herald; “Daval’s sound is all that can be asked of the Baroque trumpeter: He is polished, accurate, and articulate.” And the San Francisco Examiner says; “He made every note a personal treasure.” Email: cdaval@illinois.edu    

When the student is ready, the Teacher will appear-A conversation with Dr. Keith Winking Keith Winking is a professor at Texas State University, where he teaches trumpet, directs the Texas State Jazz Orchestra, and is a member of the SouthWest BrassWorks. Dr. Winking received his undergraduate degree in Music Education from Quincy University, his M.M. in Trumpet Performance from Texas State, and his D.M.A. in Trumpet Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. His teachers have included Raymond Crisara, Vince Cichowicz, Leon Rapier and Don "Jake" Jacoby. He has served as a visiting lecturer to scores of universities and conservatories, including the Crane School of Music and the Moscow and St. Petersburg Conservatories.  Dr. Winking has presented solo and ensemble concerts and clinics throughout the United States, Canada, Chile, Sweden, Japan, Switzerland and Russia. He is a freelance trumpet player, performing with many local and national groups, including the Austin Symphony, the Austin Jazz Orchestra, James Brown, the Manhattan Transfer, and the Austin Sinfonietta. He has extensive recording experience and has recorded national jingles for McDonalds and American Express. He has also taped numerous TV shows, including PBS's "Lonesome Pines," TNN's "Texas Connection," PBS's "Austin City Limits" and a taping for the BBC entitled "Rhythms of the World." Episode 50: Creating Aural Images-A Conversation with Kurt Gorman Kurt Gorman, D.M.A., Professor of Music, joined music faculty at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2004. He directs the UTM Big Band and Small Jazz Group and teaches applied trumpet. Prior to his appointment, Gorman served as the Principal Trumpet of Orquesta Sinaloa de las Artes, in Culiacan, Mexico. Dr. Gorman holds the position of Principal Trumpet of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the UTM Faculty Brass Quintet. He is an active member of the International Trumpet Guild and appeared as a soloist at ITG Conferences in 2009 and 2012. Dr. Gorman commissioned and premiered the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano, Op. 45 by the renowned composer Easley Blackwood, as well as the Sonata for Trumpet by hornist, composer and long-time friend, Wayne Lu. Dr. Gorman’s primary scholarly interest is chamber music. He was awarded a Reagan Leave for spring 2015 to continue research on his doctoral dissertation entitled, “The Trumpet in Mixed Chamber Music of the Twentieth Century.” Dr. Gorman is Vice President and editor of Veritas Musica Publishing.   Dr. Gorman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Chicago and graduate degrees in performance from the University of North Texas and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Episode 49: Teaching to Their Strengths - A conversation with Max Matzen Noted for his sharp and persuasive playing (Jack Bowers, allaboutjazz.com), Max Matzen is steadily emerging as one of America's prominent trumpet artists. He maintains an international performing career as a soloist, and member of a variety of ensembles. Mr. Matzen has tallied performances on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and festivals. He has performed with the Eastman Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall, and has also performed at the famed North Sea, Vienne, and Montreaux jazz festivals. He has performed and assisted in master classes administered at the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) conferences in Toronto, New York City, and New Orleans. In May of 2011, Matzen completed a solo recital tour in the Osaka and Kyoto areas of Japan. As a member of the Emerald Brass Quintet, he was a featured performer in the premier of Jim Stephenson’s Dodecafecta for brass quintet and wind ensemble, accompanied by the Eastman Wind Ensemble. The Emerald Brass Quintet was also a featured performing ensemble at the Frankenwald Brass Festival in Hof, Germany in July 2009. Notable jazz artists he has performed with include Terence Blanchard, Benny Green, Slide Hampton, Antonio Hart, The Heath Brothers, Conrad Herwig, Pat Martino, Bob Mintzer, James Moody, Eddie Palmieri, Maria Schneider, Ira Sullivan, and the legendary Clark Terry. In April 2011 Matzen completed the Doctor of Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music where he studied trumpet with esteemed brass pedagogue James Thompson. He currently holds a Master of Music in trumpet performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies from the University of North Florida. From 2010 until 2012 Matzen was the Assistant Professor of trumpet at Texas Tech University. Matzen joined the faculty at Utah State University in fall of 2012. Episode 48: Audiate! A Conversation with Dr. Eric Swisher Before his appointment to Murray State University in 2003, Dr. Eric Swisher worked as freelance musician in Oklahoma, Indiana, California, and Texas performing with: the Dallas Wind Symphony, the Dallas Opera Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Irving Symphony, the Evansville Philharmonic, the Paducah Symphony (KY) and the Jackson Symphony (TN). He holds a Bachelors degree in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma, a Masters degree in Trumpet Performance from Indiana University and a Doctorate in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Texas. His primary trumpet instructors were Dr. Jacob Larson, Louis Ranger, Edmund Cord and Keith Johnson. As a soloist, he performed the Suite in D-Major by G.F. Handel with the Timberline Symphony Orchestra (CO), Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat with the San Jose Wind Symphony and the Concerto for Trumpet in A-flat by Alexander Arutiunian at the International Trumpet Seminar (Truro, UK). Additionally, he as performed solo recitals and masterclasses throughout the United States. He has many publications to his credit: a trumpet method, Basic Skills for Developing Trumpeters, several arrangements for trumpet ensemble and brass ensemble, and many articles in the Bluegrass Music News,Tempo!, the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal and the International Trumpet Guild Journal.  His former students have continued their trumpet studies at some of this country's finest music programs: Indiana University, the University of North Texas, the Aspen Music Festival, the San Francisco Conservatory, and Yale University. Others have entered the field of music education, working in highly successful programs. Under his direction, the Murray State Trumpet Ensemble performed at the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Conference and placed 6th at the 2007 National Trumpet Competition. 

Episode 47: "Simplify" A conversation with Kyle Milsap Kyle Millsap is Assistant Professor of Trumpet & Jazz at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. In addition to applied teaching duties, Dr. Millsap directs Jazz Band 3, the TAMUK Trumpet Ensemble, the Jazz Trumpet Ensemble, and performs with the Kingsville Brass Quintet. His performances span orchestral, chamber, and jazz/commercial idioms, including opportunities to perform in England, Germany, Mexico, and throughout the United States. He has performed with The Temptations, Mannheim Steamroller, Johnny Mathis, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Al Kapone, Jon Mayer, Rufus Reid, Kirk Whalum, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Eroica Ensemble, Memphis Repertory Orchestra, Germantown Symphony Orchestra, Corinth Symphony Orchestra, Wichita Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica UANL, Jazz Orchestra of the Delta, Memphis Jazz Orchestra, as well as productions with Ballet Memphis. Theater credits include performances for nearly a dozen national touring company productions, including The Addams Family, Anything Goes, Chicago, Dreamgirls, High School Musical, South Pacific, and Young Frankenstein. He has performed at halftime for the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, the Elvis Presley 35th Anniversary concert, and been seen on BET television. He has been frequently heard on the Memphis Public Radio WKNO Live Lunch series. He has been a featured soloist with the Corpus Christi Wind Symphony and the TAMUK Wind Symphony. A proponent of new music for trumpet, Dr. Millsap has commissioned and premiered several new works for trumpet: Shalom, Salaam, Peace… (2010) written for two trumpets and organ, Scatter the Darkness (2011) for trumpet and organ and A Whisper of Angels (2012) for trumpet quartet and narrator, 2x4: Domestic Tranquility (2013) for trumpet and flugelhorn duet, Cuando las ranas crien pelo (2014) for trumpet sextet. His recording of these compositions will be released on the album Scatter the Darkness: New Music of Stanley Friedman. He can be heard as principal trumpet with the Memphis Repertory Orchestra on their recordings Dvorak & Tchaikovsky and Voyagers, and as lead trumpet on the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra recording Voices. Dr. Millsap has written articles and reviews for the International Trumpet Guild Journal and serves as a music reviewer. He has published compositions and arrangements through Cimarron Music and Triplo Press. He has performed at the International Horn Symposium and presented at the Texas Music Educators Association and Tennessee Music Educators Association conventions. He is a member of the Artist Faculty for the National Trumpet Competition. Episode 46: Letting Go of Expectations - A conversation with Pete Estabrook Pete Estabrook earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Professional Music from Berklee College (Boston, MA) in 1987 and Master of Fine Arts Degree in Jazz Studies from California Institute for the Arts (Valencia, CA) in 1991. He is also an AmSat certified Alexander Technique Teacher and completed that training at the Northern California Center for the Alexander Technique (Redwood City, CA) in 2011. Pete is a student of internationally recognized Yamaha Trumpet Artist and Clinician: Bobby Shew. He has also studied trumpet privately with 25 teachers, including: Mario Guineri, Roy Poper, Jon Lewis, and Steve Braet (who were all students of James Stamp). Formerly on the Jazz Faculty at Sonoma State University (1999-2011), Pete has been on the at Santa Rosa Junior College Faculty for over 20 years, where he has taught Jazz Courses, Music Fundamentals, and Applied Music (Trumpet). He has also been an Adjunct Faculty Member for Pacific Union College and Napa Valley College. He has been and active Private Trumpet Instructor for 34 years. He has transcribed over 400 Jazz Trumpet Solos as well as numerous Original Jazz Compositions and Arrangements by various Blue Note Artists. Pete's Transcriptions of Miles Davis' Solos were included as bonus material with the 2006 and 2009 re-releases of the 50's Prestige Sessions by the Concord Music Group. Under the guidance of James Newton (Downbeat Poll Winner-Jazz Flute), Pete transcribed and arranged portions of Duke Ellington's "Queen's Suite". This work, previously unreleased, was performed by the Danish National Radio Orchestra in 1991. As a student, Pete had the good fortune to perform with, and arranged for, ensembles featuring such well-known jazz artists as Bobby Shew, Charlie Haden, James Newton, Red Calendar, Bruce Forman, Tom Scott, Carl Fontana, Joe Williams, Albert Heath, Ernie Watts, and Roscoe Mitchell. In addition to performing regularly in a variety of musical settings which include Orchestral, Theater, Dance, and Brass groups, Pete also plays with his own Jazz Quintet (the Blue Note Collective). He has appeared on several albums by local artists including: Mel Graves' "Ear Shot", Bonnie Brooks' “You are the Song in Me”,and Steve Wolf's “Joy Button”. For the past 31 years, Pete has served as the Racetrack Bugler on the Northern California Fair Circuit, performing each summer for Fairs in Alameda, Humboldt, Sonoma, Solano, and San Joaquin County, as well as the Sacramento State Fair, and in the “off season”, for Cal Expo Harness Racing. Prior to teaching at the College level, Pete worked Holland America, Princess and Carnival Cruise Lines as a featured soloist and lead player.

Episode 45: Finding the Beauty in Your Sound - A conversation with Dr. Christopher Moore Grammy Award-winner, Professor Christopher Moore has been teaching trumpet at FSU since 2003. Prior to his appointment at FSU, Dr. Moore was Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of Kansas, where for seven years he directed the trumpet studio, conducted the trumpet ensemble and performed as a member of the Kansas Brass Quintet. Dr. Moore also served as Assistant Professor of Music at Morningside College from 1989 to1993, and from 1994 to 1996 was a full-time member of the Philadelphia professional brass quintet, The Chestnut Brass Company, recording 4 CD’s with that group and winning the Grammy Award in their field in 2000 with Hornsmoke, a CD that featured the brass chamber music of Peter Schickele. Dr. Moore holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music in Performance from the University of New Mexico, and a Bachelor of Music in Performance from The Florida State University. He has won numerous solo competitions, including top prize at the ITG competition and at state and regional MTNA competitions. Professor Moore has also been a finalist at the Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition as well as the MTNA National Finals. Dr. Moore has presented clinics at the Midwest Clinic, the NACWPI National Convention, and has performed at the National MENC. He is on the Executive Board of the National Trumpet Competition, is a Selmer Artist, and can be heard on his first solo CD, Trumpeting the Stone, on the Mark Masters label, and most recently recorded the Progressive Etudes by Sigmund Hering for Carl Fischer Publications. Episode 44: Practicing What You Preach - A conversation with Jim Johnson Dr. Jim Johnson grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Before joining the faculty at Kansas State University, he earned his D.M. in Trumpet Performance from The Florida State University under the guidance of Dr. Christopher Moore, his M.M. in Trumpet Performance from Kansas State University with Dr. Gary Mortenson and his B.S. in Music Education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania under Dr. Kevin Eisensmith. As an active performer, Dr. Johnson currently serves as the Principal Trumpet of the Salina Symphony Orchestra in Salina, Kansas and performs with the Kansas State University Faculty Brass Quintet.  He has performed with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (Tallahassee, FL), Albany Symphony Orchestra (Albany, GA), and Sinfonia Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra (Destin, FL). Episode 42: Musical Fluency-A conversation with Brian McWhorter Brian McWhorter is associate professor of music at the University of Oregon. Previously, he held positions at Manhattan School of Music, Louisiana State University, East Carolina University, and Princeton University. He earned the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Oregon and the Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School. While living in New York City, McWhorter’s performing career gravitated toward contemporary classical and improvised music. He has worked with many of the United States’ best-known modern music ensembles including Third Angle, Sequitur, Ensemble Sospeso, counter(induction, Ne(x)tworks, Tilt Brass, Elliott Sharp’s Orchestra Carbon, Continuum and Meridian Arts Ensemble. Now, as co-artistic director of Beta Collide, a new music group whose debut album was described as one of the top classical albums of 2010 by the Willamette Week, he is engaged in some of the most diverse projects of his career. Hailed as a “terrific trumpeter” by The New York Times, McWhorter has been a featured soloist at the Festival of New Trumpet (New York City), Church of Beethoven (Albuquerque), Jornados de Creación Musica (Mexico City), and at Bargemusic (Brooklyn). He worked extensively with brass chamber groups including the Oregon Brass Quintet, Extension Ensemble, Manhattan Brass Quintet and the American Brass Quintet. As a member of the brass and percussion sextet Meridian Arts Ensemble from 2001-2010, McWhorter performed, commissioned and recorded some of the most demanding and progressive music ever written for brass. Meridian’s album Timbrando – a collection of Latin American contemporary works – was recently profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered. McWhorter was appointed principal trumpet of the Eugene Symphony by Giancarlo Guerrero for the 2008-2009 season. Additionally, he has performed as principal trumpet with the Portland Opera, Oregon Ballet Theatre Orchestra, Quartz Mountain Music Festival Orchestra, American Sinfonietta and Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra. He has also performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and many others.

Cox holds earned doctorates in medicine, psychology, and theology, as well as having been granted three honorary doctorates, one from the World Health Organization (D.Sc.). He is internationally known for his work with students and professionals in many fields, including music performance, for which many consider him among the few experts in this area. Episode 40: The Trumpet Repertoire Project with Dr. J. Peyden Shelton http://www.peydenshelton.com http://www.peydenshelton.com/trumpet-repertoire-project.html   A current resident of the greater Washington D.C. and Baltimore area, Dr. J. Peyden Shelton has gained a rapidly growing reputation as an active clinician and performer throughout the United States and Canada.  Dr. Shelton has served on the faculties of both the University of Rochester and Cornell University as an Instructor of Trumpet.  In these positions, he recruited and maintained two studios of both undergraduate and graduate students.  He also served as chamber ensemble coach for numerous student ensembles.  While pursuing his doctorate in Trumpet Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music, Peyden served as the head teaching assistant for the Eastman School's trumpet studio under Professors James Thompson and Douglas Prosser.  Before going to the Eastman School of Music, Peyden attended the University of Miami's Frost School of Music as a Mancini Fellow and teaching assistant for Craig Morris.  While working toward his Masters in Music, Peyden served as the principal classical trumpet for the Henry Mancini Orchestra.  There, Peyden has recorded and played with many musicians including The Beach Boys, Lou Gramm of The Foreigners, and Gloria Gaynor.   Peyden is also featured on Pharrell Williams' track entitled,"I Am Other."   In addition to his performances with the Mancini Orchestra, Peyden also served as a substitute and utility trumpet with the New World Symphony under the guidance of maestros Michael Tilson Thomas and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In March of 2014, Peyden was awarded 1st place in the Graduate Solo Division at the National Trumpet Competition in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.   Since that time, Peyden has been featured as a soloist with several ensembles throughout the East Coast.   His most recent performances include Alexandra Pakhmutova's Concerto for Trumpet, Duke Ellington's Concerto for Cootie, Bruce Broughton's Excursions for Trumpet and Band, as well as Donald Hunsberger's famous arrangement for Wynton Marsalis of J.B. Arban's Fantasie Brillante.   Peyden has performed as a soloist with a wide variety of ensembles including The Winds of the Blue Ridge, Southwest Virginia's premiere wind band, Cornell University's Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and the Reston Symphony Orchestra.   He has been featured as soloist in chamber music settings including the Eastman School's Tuba Miram, and the Eastman Brass Guild.  Along with having an extensive performance background, Peyden holds a Bachelors of the Arts with a focus in Music Education from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.   He has given numerous clinics and masterclass for both secondary school students, as well as numerous collegiate masterclasses throughout the United States.   His clinics focus on strengthening basic fundamentals while finding ways to develop each player's own sound.  In his current positions with Symphony Number One, The Washington Chamber Orchestra, and principal trumpet of the Hunt Valley Symphony Orchestra, Peyden helps to promote both traditional performance repertoire, as well as new works for solo and chamber ensembles.  He is strongly committed to furthering the growth of his own instrument's repertoire and is currently commissioning works that showcase the trumpet in a solo setting that may function not only as art music, but also serve to provide key pedagogical elements to younger performers. 

Episode 39: "Breathe" - A Conversation with Justin Emerich A nationally renowned trumpeter and teacher with extensive national and international performing experience, Justin Emerich is associate professor of trumpet at the MSU College of Music. Emerich’s orchestral experience includes serving as acting associate principal trumpet of the San Francisco Symphony, as well as performing with the St Louis Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Opera, Malaysia Philharmonic, Seoul Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Grant Park Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony, Palm Beach Opera Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. He has been a featured soloist with the Seattle Symphony and the Fulcrum Point New Music Ensemble in Chicago. In April 2013, Emerich was singled out as one of the San Francisco Symphony's "superb soloists" by the San Francisco Chronicle. Emerich is also an avid chamber musician and has been a member of, and toured with, such groups as the Canadian Brass, Burning River Brass, Proteus 7, the Avatar Brass, and Pink Martini. Performing with these groups, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and all 50 states in the U.S. While with the world famous Canadian Brass, he performed as solo-piccolo trumpet and collaborated with the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra brass sections. Emerich and the Canadian Brass were also featured with the New Jersey Symphony and premiered a new work by Bramwell Tovey with the Vancouver Symphony. He is currently the piccolo trumpet of Burning River Brass. Emerich performed in numerous Broadway shows in New York City including Kiss Me Kate, Into the Woods, and 42nd Street. After earning his degree, he became artist-in-residence and assistant trumpet professor at Grand Valley State University. Emerich has performed with such artists as Diana Ross, Burt Bacharach, Natalie Cole, Wayne Newton, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, Gil Shaham, Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Renee Fleming, Sufjan Stevens, Ben Folds, and Vanessa Williams. He has recorded for hundreds of TV, movie, and video game soundtracks, and can be heard as the lone trumpet on The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock. Emerich has recorded various CDs for the Columbia, SFS Media, Naxos, New World, Dorian, Burmermusic, LML music, and Albany record labels. Emerich, who comes to Michigan State University from a faculty position at the University of Las Vegas, is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music. 

Lips of Steel: A Conversation with David Baldwin David Baldwin is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Minnesota School of Music in Minneapolis. He conducts the University Brass Choir, an 18-member ensemble which has several recordings to its credit. He is an active soloist, ensemble player, composer, arranger and teacher. He has over 100 arrangements and compositions published by G. Schirmer, Shawnee Press, Theodore Presser and others.  Baldwin also serves as leader of the Summit Hill Brass Quintet. This group has recorded nine CDs, including two of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, two All-American albums, two Christmas CDs and Music for Al's Breakfast, four original Baldwin compositions.  Dr. Baldwin received a Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin-Wallace College and MM, MMA, and DMA degrees from Yale University. From 1969-71 Baldwin was a member of the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, New York. He is also founding Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild.  His teachers include Robert Nagel, Raymond Crisara, William Vacchiano, Bernard Adelstein, Charles Gorham and Eric Duro. In Minnesota, he has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra and the Bach Chamber Players of St. Paul. He is the founder and leader of the Summit Hill Brass Quintet, which has been active since 1976. He is a frequent soloist and recitalist at the University of Minnesota, and across the Twin Cities. David has performed many times with the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Minnesota Opera. Dr. Baldwin lives in St. Paul with his wife, Dr. Christine Baldwin, a clinical psychologist. He is an active calligrapher and has had many sponsored shows of his artwork.

Episode 37: Lasting Change for Trumpeters-A Conversation with Luis Loubriel Luis E. Loubriel is a performer, teacher, researcher, and writer who specializes on brass performance and pedagogy. He joined the American Federation of Musicians at age 16 to perform with the Puerto Rico Philharmonic and the Casals Festival Orchestra. He completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees in trumpet performance at Northwestern University where he studied with Vincent Cichowicz and Luther Didrickson (concurrent with private studies with William Scarlett and Armando Ghitalla).  He was a Patricia Roberts Harris Fellow at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis--where he studied with David Baldwin; Manny Laureano; and Gary Bordner--and a ICEOP Fellow at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign--where he studied with Ray Sasaki; Michael Ewald; and Ronald Romm. Loubriel has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra; the Canadian Brass Quintet; the Artie Shaw Orchestra; and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra among others. As a music producer, Loubriel served as assistant producer/programmer and recording engineer at WFMT Radio in Chicago--where he worked on the Studs Terkel Program with Studs Terkel and guests such as Jean Pierre Rampal; Ludwig Guttler; Maya Angelou; Toni Morrison; and Charlie Rose. Loubriel co-produced the Jazz Image--a live radio show hosted by Leigh Kamman at Minnesota Public Radio--where he worked with artists such as Sonny Rollins; Jean Toots Thielemans; and Dr. Billy Taylor. He published Lasting Change for Trumpeters with Scholar Publications in 2005; Back to Basics for Trumpeters in 2009; and wrote several articles with the International Trumpet Guild; the Forum on Public Policy; and the Journal of Integral Theory and Practice. He is currently Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Music at Benedictine University.

Episode 36: Keep Going! A Conversation with Dr. Cathy Leach Cathy Leach has been Professor of Trumpet at the University of Tennessee since 1981. She teaches applied trumpet, directs the UT Trumpet Ensemble and coaches brass quintets, and serves the School of Music as Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies. Dr. Leach played principal trumpet with the Knoxville Symphony and Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestras 1981-2012, and has played principal trumpet with the very active UT Faculty Brass Quintet at the University of Tennessee for the past 35 years. She appears on recordings on the Musical Heritage and Opus One labels. A popular soloist and clinician, Ms. Leach has been featured with the Knoxville Symphony and Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestras, the Oak Ridge Symphony, the Bremerton Symphony, and the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic. She has been a member of Monarch Brass and Stiletto Brass Quintet, with whom she has toured and recorded. Dr. Leach is currently Vice President/President Elect of the International Trumpet Guild, having served 12 years on the Board of Directors. She is President of the ITG local chapter, the Smokey Mountain Trumpet Guild, which aims to promote communication among trumpet players in the East Tennessee region. Dr. Leach's students currently perform professionally and teach in universities and public schools across the United States. As Director of the UT Trumpet Ensemble, Dr. Leach has conducted the group at International Trumpet Guild Conferences at the University of Maryland (1990), in Rotterdam (1992), at the University of Richmond (1999), at Rowan State University (2006), Columbus State University in Columbus, GA (2012) and Columbus, OH (2015), often featuring pieces she has commissioned. Dr. Leach has been awarded a Chancellors Citation for Excellence in Teaching, a School of Music Leadership Award, a 2007 James R. and Nell W. Cunningham Outstanding Teaching Award, and a Sandra G. Powell Professorship 2014-2016.

Free Flow! - An conversation with Judith Saxton Judith Saxton enjoys a multi-faceted career as an international soloist, chamber and orchestral musician and educator and has been lauded as a “virtuoso player and superb soloist”. In addition to her performing and teaching, she offers Alexander Technique lessons and group seminars for a variety of populations globally.  As a recitalist, Ms. Saxton has performed in the UK, China, Brasil and Italy and concertizes nationally with Timothy Olsen, organ, and Allison Gagnon, piano with whom she recorded her acclaimed solo CD Concert and Contest Pieces for Trumpet, distributed globally to the International Trumpet Guild membership. As principal and soloist, she leads the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, and is on Eastern Music Festival (Greensboro, NC), faculty with whom she records annually under Gerard Schwarz’s leadership. She performs regularly with an array of orchestral and chamber organizations on the eastern seaboard of the US, and she offers master classes at conservatories, festivals and conferences world-wide as a Conn-Selmer clinician. Episode 33: Being patient - A Conversation with Dr. Jason Crafton Jason Crafton is Assistant Professor of Trumpet at Virginia Tech and he directs both of the large jazz ensembles. Prior to this appointment he held positions at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, North Central Texas College, the University of Northern Colorado, and in various Dallas-Fort Worth area public schools. Episode 32: Stay in the Moment - A Conversation with James Thompson of the Eastman School of Music James Thompson is currently Professor of Trumpet at the renowned Eastman School of Music. He came to this position after having played Principal Trumpet in the Atlanta and Montreal Symphony Orchestras. He has performed as soloist with orchestras in North and South America as well as Europe. He has made recital tours of Asia, North and South America as well as most of Europe. Episode 31: "First, Be a Musician" a conversation with Dr. J. Peyden Shelton A current resident of the greater Washington D.C. and Baltimore area, Dr. J. Peyden Shelton has gained a rapidly growing reputation as an active clinician and performer throughout the United States and Canada.  Dr. Shelton has served on the faculties at both the University of Rochester and Cornell University as an Instructor of Trumpet.  In these positions he recruited and maintained two studios of both undergraduate and graduate students.  He also served as chamber ensemble coach for numerous student ensembles.  While pursuing his doctorate in Trumpet Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music, Peyden served as the head teaching assistant for the Eastman School's trumpet studio under Professors James Thompson and Douglas Prosser.  In March of 2014, Peyden was awarded 1st place in the Graduate Solo Division at the National Trumpet Competition in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.   Since that time, Peyden has been featured as a soloist with several ensembles throughout the East Coast.   His most recent performances include Alexandra Pakhmutova's Concerto for Trumpet, Duke Ellington's Concerto for Cootie, Bruce Broughton's Excursions for Trumpet and Band, as well as Donald Hunsberger's famous arrangement for Wynton Marsalis of J.B. Episode 30: "Be an Artist" a conversation with Larry Meregillano.  Larry Meregillano is a Bach artist/clinician. He started his professional career playing in big bands in San Diego in the early 1970’s. In 1976, he was hired to play in Tom Ranier’s Show band at Disneyland. A year later, Mr. Meregillano joined the gospel group Truth and soon after went on to perform and tour with The Bill Gaither Trio. While traveling and recording with The Bill Gaither Trio, he also recorded with Sandi Patti, David T, Clydsdale, Ron Huff, Don Marsh and many others. In 1980, Larry returned to California and became the lead trumpet player for the world-famous Disneyland Band. In the late 1980’s, Larry was hired to play in the PTL Television Orchestra with Jim and Tammy Faye Baker. From there he joined Princess Cruise lines as Musical Director. After many years, Mr. Meregillano moved to Orlando, Florida, where he performed with many bands at Walt Disney World, MGM Studios, Epcot Center, Universal Studios and Pleasure Island. He has also been the Musical Director and performer for many cruise lines including the world-famous Queen Elizabeth 2. Larry has toured with the Temptations and The Four Tops, and has been a sideman for Rosemary Clooney, Joe Williams, Jack Jones, Bob Hope, Celia Cruz, Frankie Avalon and many, many others. Mr. Meregillano has recorded with many artists including Hubert Laws, Latoya Jackson, and Rick Dees. Mr. Meregillano can often be seen playing with The Tom Kubis GWC Big Band and is a busy freelance musician playing recording dates, theater and stage shows in the Los Angeles area and around the country.  

"Sing your heart out" - A conversation with Frank Gabriel Campos. Frank Gabriel Campos is a renowned classical and jazz soloist and the author of Trumpet Technique (Oxford University Press, 2005), regarded the best single source on the subject. His popular 'Clinic' column in the International Trumpet Guild Journal has been an important pedagogical voice to thousands of trumpeters around the world since 1995. Currently professor of trumpet at Ithaca College’s Whalen Center for Music, Campos earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University Fresno and did graduate work at the University of North Texas where he won the Outstanding Masters and Outstanding Doctoral Student Awards, as well as the Hexter Prize for Outstanding Graduate. His primary teachers include John James Haynie, Leonard Candelaria, Don Jacoby, James Stamp, W. Ritchie Clendenin, Carole Klein, and his father.  Mr Campos has been principal trumpet of the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Texas Baroque Ensemble, Bear Valley Festival Orchestra, and Madera Symphony Orchestra, and he has been a member of the Fort Worth Symphony, the Fresno Philharmonic, and the Monterey County Symphony. He is a former member of the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band, the Dallas Cowboys Band, and he has been a featured soloist at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Sacramento Jazz Festival, and others. He has played or toured with such artists as Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bob Hope, and has performed at Constitution Hall, New York’s Town Hall, and on the stages of the Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.  

Episode 28: Keeping Perspective - A conversation with Chris Gekker   Chris Gekker is Professor of Trumpet at the University of Maryland, School of Music and currently lives in the Washington, DC area. He has been featured as soloist at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Chris was a member of the American Brass Quintet for eighteen years, and on the faculties of the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and Columbia University. He was principal trumpet with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, frequently performed and recorded as principal with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and often a guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He has been a guest principal with the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Santa Fe Opera. Chris has performed and recorded with many jazz and contemporary artists, and often for television and movies. In 2009 he was invited to record and perform with Sting, and is featured on the dvd “A Winter’s Night” which was recorded live at Durham Cathedral in Durham, England. My guest today is Joey Tartell. Joey is an Associate Professor of Trumpet and the Director of Undergraduate Studies at Indiana University’s Jacob School of Music.  As a performer he has been lead trumpet in Maynard Ferguson’s Band, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, the U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors and the Glen Miller Orchestra. He has performed numerous symphony orchestras including the Indianapolis, St.Louis, Houston, Cincinnati, Detroit, Baltimore and the Ottowa National Arts Center Orchestras.
