Quality Over Quantity: How Black Women Can Overcome the Need to Overperform
Since the New Year I've been feeling that I'm underperforming and berating myself for it......
As it turns out for no good reason.
On reflection I found that I'd actually underestimated my output and that my focus was a little skewed!
I'd been measuring my output and not the substance of my productivity.
I get it – the unsustainable pressure to excel and prove ourselves - but it's unhealthy.
In this piece, I share personal insights, self-reflection tips, and practical strategies to break free from that cycle.

It’s Not Too Late To Leave Your Job In Your 50’s
Two questions I'm asked regularly, are why and how I left the corporate environment to start my entrepreneurial journey in my fifties!
As I recounted my journey with clinical psychologist Kimani Norrington-Sands, Ph.D. in a recent live discussion, it was clear to me that the feelings that drove my rationale were still strong.
Furthermore, it supports my theory/research that our experiences in toxic work environments can impact our career making decisions far longer than we realize (I've had women recount incidents from 10 years ago that still makes them second guess their careers now)!
In this episode I'm sharing my conversation, in the hope that it provides a little help if you feel too old to make a career pivot and more!

Are You Caught In Your Career Comfort Zone?
Are you really happy or just really comfortable?
It's not always a question we like to answer because "Ooh that comfort zone can feel so warm and cuddly".
It's familiar.
We know what to expect.
It's a safe place.
And it may seem like a contradiction, but as safe as it feels it can still be uncomfortable.
It's a place that can stifle our growth
Keeping us from reaching our full potential or pursuing a career that's more aligned with who we are now at our mid-career stage.
Watch to identify how you can embrace your discomfort to get ahead?

You may feel that you've invested so much to get to the point of where you are now that the most difficult thing is how do you have your next chapter without it.
That's ok, it's a challenge we all face, (we wouldn't be human if we didn't), but let me share with you 7 things I believe you should be considering in the process.

ENCORE Why “quiet quitting” is NOT an Option for Black Women!
The term “Quiet quitting” has been trending for a hot minute, the act of doing only the essentials that you’re paid for, and no more.
And whilst there are benefits to rejecting hustle culture, Black Women don’t always have the luxury of refusing to overperform.
Quiet quitting is maybe a passive approach to a problem with your work life because you're just letting it happen to you. When what you really need to understand is the relationship between what you want from work and take action.

The Power of Purpose - Finding Your Mid-Career Why
In this episode, I reflect on my mother's experience of losing her sense of purpose in midlife after retirement. Watching my mother go through this journey has been difficult, as she’s always been a vibrant and active person who loved her family and was passionate about her work. However, once she retired she struggled to find a new sense of meaning and purpose in life.
I watched firsthand how the loss of purpose affected her mental and physical health, and I realized that this is a common experience for many women in midlife. Major changes in life such as retirement, children leaving home, job loss, can be a time of transition and reflection, and for some, it can be a challenge to find new sources of fulfillment and meaning.
Through my mother's experience, I learned the importance of having a sense of purpose and its positive impact on life. I also discovered some practical strategies and exercises for rediscovering purpose in midlife, such as exploring personal values, strengths, and interests, and seeking out new opportunities for growth and connection.
In this episode, I share my insights and reflections on my mother's journey and offer tips and advice for anyone struggling to find their purpose in midlife. Whether you're going through a similar experience or simply interested in this topic, I hope that this episode will inspire and encourage you to rediscover your sense of purpose and live a more fulfilling life. So join me as I reflect on my mother's experience of losing purpose in midlife and the lessons I learned along the way.

The Power In An Intentional Pause
Circumstances have forced me to be absent for a while, with good reason.
To push the pause button on my business.
But I've discovered that there is a kind of beauty hidden within an intentional pause.
It's in those moments that we allow the beauty contained within it to break open, revealing its benefits onto the way we relate to ourselves, others and the world around us.
When I decided to change careers a few years ago, I did it to have more time and freedom in my life.
Never did I think that this decision would be the best decision I'd ever make when it came to my Mother.
Listen to find out why.

Are you your #1 priority?
How many times have you put yourself on the backburner and adopted a "I'll do it tomorrow" mentality?

Some might even wonder why you should bother planning ahead if you don’t know what you want yet.
Do you recognize yourself in any of those?
In this episode, you’ll discover the strategies of those women who will make their transition happen this year and those who will keep putting it on hold or being distracted (again).
Who will YOU choose to be?

How To Set Yourself Up for Success in 2023
In a previous episode I spoke about preparing yourself to be in control of your work annual review, in this episode I'll be taking you through how you can conduct your personal annual review and get the best from it.
I’m not a fan of New Year's resolutions but I am a fan of looking back at the past year, analyzing the lessons you learned, and setting goals for the new year
Conducting personal annual reviews has brought forth some amazing insights for me:
They help me understand my development areas.
They’ve improved the way I perform self-reflection and embrace the growth I’ve seen in the year gone by.
They clarify what I want and help me plan ways to turn my dreams into reality.

8 Ways Black Women Can Get The Most Out of Their Year-End Performance Review
The end of the year often signals the annual performance review.
For some women, these can feel like a minefield to navigate, from being uncertain how to articulate their performance, navigating toxic bosses to microaggressions and more.
But with the unbalanced career field for Black women, the importance of these conversations cannot be diminished. For a process so often attached to important outcomes, from salary increases, bonus payments and promotions it’s no wonder these reviews can be an anxious time.
Recently I came across the term "protective hesitation" - the definition given was when a leader fails to give constructive criticism to an employee out of fear of being perceived as racist, sexist, homophobic, or any other prejudice.
Or as I’d prefer an appraiser not giving necessary feedback because they are worried about the appraisee’s reaction and want to avoid a difficult conversation.
It’s definitely been an issue I’ve observed in my career and a factor highly pertinent to Black women.
So let me share 8 tips to help you get the most out of your year end performance review.

Why You Need an Attitude of Gratitude (And How to Develop It)
With the well documented challenges Black women face in their careers, it can sometimes be difficult to figure out what we've got to be grateful for.
And there have definitely been times in my life and career when I've wondered just that!
But once we stop having our mini pity parties, we soon realize that no matter how bad we think things are, there's someone out there who would welcome your situation.
Thankfully (no pun intended) practicing an attitude of gratitude is a skill we can all develop.

What NOT To Do With Your Career Change
After over 25 years of being in my corporate career, I was unhappy. I was the definition of “stuck.” I had a career I thought I loved and was great at, but it just wasn’t enough.
And it showed, I was burnt out, exhausted and uninspired by my work.
The challenge was that at this stage of my life, I didn’t have the foggiest as to what else I could do without feeling like I was completely starting over.
Nothing I thought of offered me a solution that made sense. I had already worked so hard that I didn’t want to make a mistake, fail and lose everything. I felt like I was out of options.
So what did I do?

How To Own Your Career Origin Story
When you've accrued many years of skills, experience and accolades, it can be difficult to succinctly articulate why you're an ideal candidate for a role.
It can become even more daunting when trying to demonstrate how your skillset can be applied to a role or industry you've never worked in before, when you want to transition your career.
And if you've ever thought "there's no way that my working in X can be ever be used to have a career in Y", then you're wrong!
In either of these scenarios it is possible, you just need to be clear on your career origin story.

Dealing With Microaggressions As A Mid-Career Black Woman
There’s not one Black Woman I know who hasn’t experienced it.
Those seemingly innocuous comments/actions;
“No, where are you really from?”
“You speak so well”
“When did YOU qualify?”
“No need to be so angry about XYZ!”
“Oh I can’t pronounce that, is it ok if I just call you…..?:
“We can’t let you go on that program right now, there’s far too much to do” (when your white colleague is studying away from the office every week)
And the list goes on - I’m sure you can add your own.
With the transition to working in person is on and organizations are encouraging people back to the office but for some Black women, they’re feeling the stress of returning to a space that never felt safe to them.
Microaggressions are subtle forms of racial discrimination, compared to explicit forms such as racial slurs. They're often more subtle, seemingly innocuous, covert, indirect, and ambiguous but still cumulatively impactful because they can happen more frequently.
To quote one of my clients;
“ Microaggressions are heavy. People think just outright racism is the heaviest, but microaggressions are heavier because it's like the undercurrent that you can't quite put your finger on but you know it ain’t feeling right”
With the intersection of their marginalized identities of race, gender and age, mid-career Black women are particularly vulnerable to negative stereotypes that create barriers to career advancement.
So how do you navigate the microaggression minefield and minimize the impact on your career?
My guest Rebbecca Hemmings - Founder and Director of Strawberry Words Training and Development Company and I, discuss how to navigate microaggressions at work without impacting your career.
The next LinkedIn live is scheduled 9th August 2022 12pm EST where I'll be hosting Julie Turney Founder & CEO HR@Heart Consulting Inc. and
Heneka Watkis-Porter Podcast Coach & Producer/Author at The Entrepreneurial You - on the topic of Burnout in Black Women
It'll be a great and engaging conversation so make sure you connect with me on LinkedIn to join us, submit your questions and have your voices heard. https://www.linkedin.com/in/iamjanicesutherland

Your Title Doesn’t Define Your Worth
A successful career and the importance in our lives, often go hand in hand.
And it's not difficult to see why, we work hard to get the job society views as prestigious or our loved ones would be proud to identify with.
The challenge arises when we can't envisage a life without the job/title/position etc.

I speak with mid-career Black female professionals every day about what they want, and what they don't want, and most are doing something they no longer want to do, but they're doing it anyway.
'Why?'
They're trapped in their comfort zone.
This is when the comfort of the situation outweighs your desire to go after what you really want, even though you're not satisfied with your current career or job.
It can go on for years and years and no matter what's presented to you, or how uninspiring your current situation is, you can always find a reason why you can't change.
So, how do you know if you're locked in your career comfort zone and more importantly how do you get out?

Staying Recruitable When You’re Over 50
In this edition of Black, Female and Over 50 - The Power Trifecta we discuss the importance of understanding your triple minority status in the recruitment world as a necessary part of navigating the recruitment field.
Especially as over the next 20 year's the 60+ generation will grow by 40% and within just 2 years one in two of the workforce will be over 50.
The pandemic has been especially hard on older employees seeking to reclaim jobs lost in the early days of lockdowns. Many say they fear that the workplace upheaval brought on by Covid-19 has reinforced some bosses’ belief that professionals in their 50s and beyond are less inclined to return to offices or adapt to new ways of working.
With the Great Resignation being a concern for organizations, they're now turned on to the idea of employing "older" workers but there's a looming dichotomy within the methods and processes of recruitment which can oft be alienating for Black Women in the recruitment process.
In this conversation we discuss how to navigate the employment process in a post pandemic and AI driven world.
Guest panelists were Brucine Francis a Recruitment Director with over 20 years experience in the recruitment agency field and Daisy Wright - Founder & CEO of The Wright Career Solution who for over 15 years has coached numerous executives, managers and mid-career professionals to attaining new roles .
The next LinkedIn live is scheduled 12th July 2022 12pm EST where I'll be hosting Rebbecca Hemmings, award-winning Founder and Director of Strawberry Words Training and Development Company - on the topic of Dealing With Microaggressions as Mid-Career Black Woman

Priortizing Your Mental Wellbeing For A Marvelous Midlife
It's another installment of Black, Female and Over 50 - The Power Trifecta where Gillian Wells, MSW and I discuss Prioritizing Your Mental Wellbeing for a Marvellous Midlife,:
Quite often the importance of mental health for Black women of the Generation Jones and Generation X age is overlooked - they've been raised to be strong and stoic.
Women of these generations have been so busy taking care of everyone else — their careers, their partners, their elderly parents and their children — that they don’t take care of themselves.
Now they've had the chance to rethink their options, question whether there can be more to life.
They have options their mothers before them never had
A chance to do things their own way and of which can unknowingly impact their mental wellbeing.
Join Gillian Wells, MSW and I, as we discuss;
- The power of Oprah and Gale time.
- The "privilege" Black women are now afforded (even though we may not recognize it)
- How a constant life of "busyness" has led to Black women not dealing with their lived trauma experiences and how that can impact their careers.
- Practical strategies to promote healthy mental wellbeing so you can live a marvelous midlife.

Is What I Wear Really Any Of Your Business?
It's another installment of Black, Female and Over 50 - The (UnderValued) Power Trifecta
When you reach an age - (50+), you can guarantee that someone has an opinion about how you should be conducting yourself as a mature woman.
And when it comes to how we dress, the opinions really fly!
"What age does she think she is?"
"She trying to act young"
"She mutton dressed as lamb"
"Why can’t she dress her age?"
As women age they face a particular societal code that determines what is deemed "appropriate" to wear, which can lead to a fear of expressing oneself authentically, becoming almost invisible as to not risk ridicule or rejection from society.
But how do those biases translate to the working world and women's careers?
Join Personal stylist @Renee Lindo and I as we discuss:
- How important a role does appearance play for career women over 50?
- Who makes the rules about what not to wear past 50?
- Should women "disguise" their age?
- How does the way women feel about their dress impact their confidence?
- How can women dress to accommodate the physical impact of menopause at work.

Overcoming Student Debt in Your 40’s and Beyond - Briana Franklin
If you thought that student debt was exclusive to those under 40, you'd be sadly mistaken.
Statistics show that Black women have been obtaining degrees at a consistently high rate for the last eight years and counting.
Black women are and continue to be some of the most educated and qualified , working on the premise that they have to work twice as hard to be recognized at work or how I was raised - be 10X better than our Caucasian counterparts.
And when it comes to changing careers, one of the first thoughts women have is that they need further qualifications, often at a considerable financial commitment attached on top of the debt usually already accrued
Briana "Bri" Franklin Founder, President & CEO of The Prosp(a)rity Project
She is a businesswoman, philanthropist and student debt expert/thought leader with a passion for socioeconomic and holistic empowerment of Black girls and women.
Having taken on a financial burden that eventually ballooned to nearly $120K in student debt through her undergraduate studies, Bri developed an acute appreciation for the challenges many student debt holders experience, including diminished ability to establish financial independence, take advantage of personal freedoms, such as starting a family/homebuying, launch business ventures as well as creditworthiness.
In recognizing the extent to which other Black women in particular experience adversity at the hands of the $1.7T student debt crisis as well as lack of financial literacy, she formed The Prosp(a)rity Project as a solution for eradicating these systemic barriers.
The annual 35*2 Free Financial Empowerment Conference takes place Thursday 19th May, an event is devoted to drawing further attention to the $35B in student debt & 35% financial literacy rate that put Black women at a sharp socioeconomic disadvantage.
The event is packed with panels, keynotes, and activities centered around cultivating financial literacy for Black Women at levels - from college graduates to seasoned professionals.

How to stay motivated during your career change
Is it hard to start over mid-career? Is it terrifying? Is it frustrating?
Yes, it's all that and more, but trust me you can reinvent your career (and life) past 40 (or even older!!)
Once I left my corporate career and started to reinvent my life I realized that the sky was the limit. I could do or be anything in the world that I wanted to. The skill is keeping motivated until you've decided what that "anything" is, even when you feel at your lowest

Is your inner ”good girl” holding you back from the career you want?
For years women have been conditioned to play nice, to be the proverbial "good girl"! The one who's selfless, puts everyone else first and puts their own needs and wants aside.
But as nice as it may seem for everyone else, your playing nice is holding you back from confidently pursuing the dreams you most likely placed on the back burner or told yourself you weren't deserving of.
Now in your 40's and beyond you yearn for the "what could have beens" and the "if onlys", but it's never too late to discard that inner good girl and go after what you want, after all haven't you earned it?

The question is, what are you going to do about it? How do you figure out how to change careers without disrupting your life too severely?

How to stop struggling to work out what you‘re good at?
When you've accrued years of experience, one of the biggest questions you can find yourself asking is “ How do I figure out what I’m good at?
Maybe you’re;
Trying to identify your transferable skills
Wishing you knew what your strengths were
Figuring out what you’re ultimately passionate about
Or wondering “What am I good at?”
You want answers, so you can feel ready to tackle your career transition but you’re stalled and focusing on these points could actually be the thing keeping you in your stuckness!
Yes, they’re all great pointers and feel like they should be something you can easily answer so why isn’t this the case?
Using 'skills' as the starting point for your career search can be precarious - as logical as it may feel, centering your career search on your skill-set can lead to you limiting your options and impeding your progress.
Find out why.
