Extended Ep: Trashing Romance on Valentine's Day.
Here at THW, we try to stay neutral. We don't slam holidays for being infiltrated by capitalist greed (we do). We don't kill the festive mood of other people with logic and reason (we do). So it's not a surprise that in this special Valentine's Day extended episode, we look at what is really the value of love? Our motion today is: This house would raise our daughters to devalue romance. Listen in to join the wild ride that is our Valentine's Day romantic thriller, or what we usually call, a debate round.Credits:Hosts: Noah Pinno, Heather Yuan, Eric JiangEditor: Eric JiangCover Art: @onlyooh_Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @thwdebatepodcastDo you have a suggestion for a topic you would like to hear about? EP13: Diversity Hires, Affirmative Action, and Women
Imagine being a Harvard admissions officer - do you accept a white female from a poorer background or an African-American/Canadian female from a privileged background? What about if you were hiring for a major bank and needed good publicity? What inherent trait is more important - race, gender, or financial status? This thought experiment highlights the debate in this episode as we talk about: This house believes that the world would be a better place if women from privileged backgrounds turned down benefits arising from affirmative action programs.Credits:Hosts: Noah Pinno, Heather Yuan, Eric JiangEditor: Eric JiangCover Art: @onlyooh_Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @thwdebatepodcastDo you have a suggestion for a topic you would like to hear about? Many of us grapple with confidence and self-esteem insecurities when growing up. But wait, why is that? In the first episode of our current month's topic of feminism, we judge the value of beauty as a trait, either to be discarded or accepted, in this WUDC motion: This house believes that the feminist movement should push the narrative of "beauty doesn't matter" over "all bodies are beautiful".Credits:Hosts: Noah Pinno, Heather Yuan, Eric JiangEditor: Eric JiangCover Art: @onlyooh_Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @thwdebatepodcastDo you have a suggestion for a topic you would like to hear about? EP11: We are now a socially conscious film studio
Just kidding, THW is not leaving the podcast game into the film industry, but we're sure that we'd be good at it. This week, we talk about all the nuances of selecting and casting actors for major film roles, and how that can be changed by various modes of casting. Someone switched around our University majors this week as our hosts come up with some wild points for the motion: This house, as a socially conscious film studio, would only use non-traditional forms of film casting over traditional forms of casting.Credits:Hosts: Noah Pinno, Heather Yuan, Eric JiangEditor: Eric JiangCover Art: @onlyooh_Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @thwdebatepodcastDo you have a suggestion for a topic you would like to hear about? This House Debates: EP4 / Santa’s Philosophy to Gift Giving
Happy Holidays! In today's special pro-am (read: a debate team featuring an experienced debater and a younger, sometimes less experienced debater) episode of 'This House Debates', Heather and Hannah sit down with Noah ( from Debate 101), Zuha- from the University of Toronto- and Alex, and Gaby- both high school debaters- to explore the topic 'This House Believes That Santa should give every child a present'. To better interpret and understand the motion, we have provided an information slide to our debaters and listeners: There exists a world where Santa is real, and he is an all-seeing, benevolent actor. Santa’s annual holiday gift-giving follows a rewards and punishment system, where children with better behaviour receive more extravagant presents, and those who demonstrate poor behaviour throughout the year receive no presents. Santa can alternatively give every child a present of similar value, regardless of their behaviour. This year, the holidays look different; while we can not see our friends and loved ones, gift-giving has not been lost. In particular, we wanted to challenge an idea of gift-giving revolving Christmas and Santa: how does Santa determine which children to give presents to? Do ‘naughty’ children deserve presents?Enjoy the episode! This House Debates: EP3 / Elections and Social Media: A Deadly Combo?
The US Election has come to a close, with Biden and Harris taking the win and Trump throwing an adult-sized tantrum in a line of election lawsuits. Regardless of respective reactions, social media sites have played a large role in this election: from QAnon to Russian interference stirring up rallies, to scenes of protests by anti-maskers and the BLM movement, social media has simultaneously connected and segregated people. In today's episode of 'This House Debates', Heather sits down with Jeffrey (Side Proposition) and Maiya and Hannah (Side Opposition) to explore the topic: THBT social media platforms have done more harm than good in US elections. Please note: the debaters were assigned a side of the debate by the THW Debate Podcast Team. The views, ideas, and examples presented by the debaters do not represent nor reflect their own. On That!: EP 2 / The Hidden Biases of Media Coverage (Part 2)
Traditional news sources (such as CBC, CNN, and The Economist) have made current issues and events accessible and digestible for the average person. However as the news stories are a product of the journalists and editors in the newsroom, the media coverage inherently reflects their hidden biases and corporate/political interests. By drawing on the news coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement, the Tara Reade-Joe Biden scandal and much more, Reza and Nicole discuss the pervasive problems of a lack of diversity and privilege in the newsroom, the ineffectiveness of ethics guidelines, and the impacts of these biases on the audience with our guest speaker, Cassandra Cervi in today's episode of 'On That!'On That! conducts a deep dive into a topic of interest featuring individual guests or a panel of debaters or former debaters through three sections: framing the situation, analyzing the impacts, and exploring the future of the topic. This House Debates: EP1 / Minority Representation in Disney’s Animated Films
The Walt Disney Animation Studios has created 58 animated films thus far. Only 12 of them feature a non-white main character like Mulan, Pocahontas, Lilo & Stitch, The Princess and the Frog and so on.It's clear that Disney Animations is looking to continue to diversify their works; with their upcoming film Raya and the Last Dragon, the production team drew inspiration from Southeast Asian cultures and features Asian stars like Awkwafina on the cast. While this can be said as a step in the right direction, children and young adults still identify with Disney’s classics despite its all white production team who often simplify cultural norms and are sometimes entirely ignorant of them, because it is the most common and frequently used entertainment. In today's episode of 'This House Debates', Heather sits down with Huiwen and Jennifer (Side Proposition) and Grace and Tianzhi (Side Opposition) to explore the topic 'This House Believes That Disney's animated films featuring ethnic minorities do more good than harm'. The all-female debate round listed themes of cultural representation, historical accuracy, and Disney's responsibility as a dominant production company. Please note: In a debate, debaters are assigned a side that they may or may not agree with. It is their duty to argue for that side regardless of their personal opinions. The views, ideas, and examples presented by the debaters do not represent nor reflect their own. Enjoy the episode!
