Exercise to beat depression - Ben Singh | EP110
Should exercise be the first course of action for people with mental health issues?According to recent research by Dr. Ben Singh and his team at The University of South Australia, physical exercise is 1.5 times more effective than medication or counseling. So for many this is obvious, the problem is that the people that generally need to be moving their body to affect their mental health aren't the ones doing it.There is a benefit in counseling, and at certain times medication is needed. But the question needs to be asked as to how we can get those with mental health issues to implement a consistent exercise regime in their lives. The exercise solution to our mental health issues are always available, and the consistent benefits can have a profound effect on our lives.Dr. Ben Singh obtained a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology, Master’s Degree in research, and PhD at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Brisbane.Dr. Singh is currently a fellow at the University of South Australia (UniSA’s), Allied Health & Performance.UniSA’s Allied Health & Performance deliver high-impact research in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of health issues. Would Deliberate Calm benefit you in the workplace? - Jacqueline Brassey and Michiel Kruyt | EP105
Do you find calm people fascinating?I’m not talking about people that get paralyzed by indecision or people that come across indifferent. I’m talking about those rare individuals that can intentionally take in incredibly volatile input and still hold it together in a way that leads to clear thinking and mobilisation of people towards a solution or acceptable outcome. This phenomenon is “Deliberate Calm.” The good news is that it is a skill, and it's the topic of conversation today.Drawing from a unique blend of psychology, neuroscience, and consciousness practices, as well as more than fifty years of combined international boardroom experience, three experts offer a unique approach to learning and leading with awareness and intentional choice amid even the most challenging circumstances. As change accelerates daily in our increasingly complex world, leaders tasked with performing outside their comfort zones in both their personal and professional lives must adapt. Yet the same conditions that make it so important to adapt may also trigger fear, causing resistance to change and a default to reactive behavior. The authors call this the “adaptability paradox”: at a time when we most need to learn and grow, we stick with what we know, often in ways that stifle change and innovation. To avoid this trap and be ahead of the curve, leaders must become proactive.Enter Deliberate Calm, which combines cutting-edge neuroscience, psychology, and consciousness practices, along with the authors’ decades of experience with leaders around the globe. By practicing Dual Awareness, which integrates internal and external experiences, leaders can become resilient and respond to challenges with intentional choice instead of being limited to old models of success. With Deliberate Calm, anyone can lead and learn with awareness and choice to realize their full potential, even in times of uncertainty, complexity, and change.Months ago, I came across the article in The Harvard Business Review written by Jacqueline Brassey of the McKinsey Health Institute and her colleague Michiel Kruyt, an independent consultant and thought leader. We are thrilled to have them on the show today.Notable moments in this episode:(07:03) - What is emotional adaptability(11:04) - Deliberate Calm(15:56) - Team management: The concept of learning versus protection(21:03) - Meditation, Mindfulness, and Deliberate Calm***Follow Jacqueline Brassey and Michiel Kruyt:Books - https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/mckinsey-on-books/deliberate-calm Jacqueline Brassey:Blog - https://advancingauthenticconfidence.com/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jacquibrasseyWebsite (Personal) - http://www.reachingyourpotential.org/Michiel Kruyt:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michiel-kruytWebsite - https://imagine.one/***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabits Instagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/ LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/ Strava - https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468 YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@UltrahabitsWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

How the Sydney Swans ended their drought - Paul Roos | EP104
How do you end a 72 year championship drought? When Paul Roos entered the Sydney Swans he knew that the club would have to transform in order to meet its objectives. Paul embarked on a rigorous transformation program within the management and playing team that would ultimately see the end of a drought of the coveted premiership. On the show today we uncover the steps he took to do this, the philosophy that guided his thought process and the decisions that he made. In the highly competitive game of the AFL, where dynasties aren't mainstays, any given year a club can win. Club and fan demands are extraordinary in this sport, the expectation is that winning matters. If this is the environment that you are leading in, you are going to want to check this show out. When Paul Roos made his senior VFL debut for Fitzroy against the Sydney Swans at the SCG in 1982, it would have been impossible to predict that he would ultimately become one of the most important figures in the Club’s history. Having established himself as one of the superstars of the competition in 13 seasons with the Lions, Paul Roos joined the Swans in 1995 and at centre half-back was instrumental in the Club’s rise to Grand Finalists in 1996. His playing days ended in 1998, after 87 games and 19 goals for the red and white. His association with the Club, however, had only just begun. Appointed Senior Coach midway through 2002, his coaching record was extraordinary as the Club played finals football in all but one of his eight full seasons at the helm. Paul Roos led the Club to the 2005 Premiership – its first in 72 years. He stepped down from the Senior Coaching role after 202 games, at the conclusion of the 2010 season.Notable moments in this episode:(13:18) - AFL Legend: Being a player and coach(16:53) - Paul’s vision for Sydney Swans(39:27) - Performance by DesignFollow Paul Roos:LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/paul-roos-pbdWebsite - https://performancebydesign.co/***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabitsInstagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/Strava - https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@UltrahabitsWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabit

Rising above the streets to the White House corridors - Bernard Toney Jr. | EP101
Why do some people have turning points in their lives?More importantly, are these moments in time something that can be created, or do they just happen? Some people describe rock bottoms, moments of clarity or simply sheer desperation that sparks a survival instinct.Whilst this phenomenon need not be so profound in your life, the question remains as to how we can better harness our struggles and bad circumstances as a catalyst for change. If someone had told Bernard Toney Jr. at the tender age of 17 that the tragic loss of his dear friend, Ivan Gray, to a senseless drive-by shooting in Atlanta, would set him on a transformative path towards healing, mentorship, and leadership, he would have met their gaze with disbelief and despair.Bernard chose to go into medicine, to ensure that he would never again feel so powerless when faced with the life and death of another human being. From the grit and grind of Atlanta’s streets to the war-ravaged terrains of Afghanistan, his journey was far from conventional. Enlisting as a US Army medic and mental health specialist, he learned the critical importance of both physical and psychological healing. Bernard served with US Army Special Forces medics in Afghanistan, honing his skills in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable. These experiences deepened his resolve and helped him grow both personally and professionally, leading him to pursue further education as a physician assistant.Little did Bernard know that his unique blend of experience and dedication would open doors to one of the most prestigious medical roles in the country. From 2019 to 2022, Bernard had the immense honour of serving as a White House Medical Unit Officer, offering medical services and guidance in the nerve centre of American governance.Bernard will be joining the show today, make sure to tune in!Notable moments in this episode:(02:03) - Who is Bernard 1.0 (the original version of himself)?(22:56) - His military experience and why he hated the army(36:05) - His career and family: why he retired from the military***Follow Bernard Toney Jr.:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/btoneyjrWebsite - https://www.lynchburg.edu/academics/faculty/bernard-toney/***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabitsInstagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/Strava - https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@UltrahabitsWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

Turn your pain into a cause - Cal Gates | EP100
250 reasonsCal Gates family had been significantly affected by Leukemia, his wife's (Tara) Mum had passed away from it when she was 3 years old. Cal had seen the impact of what this disease had done to his family and friends over the years, Cal says, “it hurts and to be honest I don't think that pain will ever leave.”9+ Years ago his wife Tara raised over $9,000 by shaving her head to raise further money for the study into Leukemia, the disease that had hurt her family. To say he was inspired was an understatement. Cal stated “often hair can represent so much for a woman, so to see her do this was an amazing thing to witness.”So he thought about what he could do in order to contribute... he decided that he couldn’t shave his head because he had no hair already, so he kept thinking about what he could do that would help to raise some funds.Cal had always like ultra-trail running, he had done a few ultras before, saying that was not particularly good at them (being 100kgs) but he loved them none the less. So, on June the 2nd 2022 he decided to run from Newcastle to Sydney along the GNW trail in a single push. It is 250km in length (maybe a little more) and climbs over 10,000+m in vertical gain. At the time it as estimated to likely take approximately 60+ hours to complete. His goal was to raise $100 per km of the GNW trail totalling $25,000.Cal believed that this was to become his ultimate test, prepared for discomfort, tears and significant pain. However, he believed that none of it even came close to the pain that people with Leukemia have had to face daily.Cal ultimately completed the run and raised over $50,000. How to Transform Who You Think You Are to Reach Your Highest Aspirations - Kay Bretz | EP90
This week on the Ultrahabits podcast we are being joined by Kay Bretz.Dr. Kay (pronounced 'Kai', rhyming with sky) Bretz is a German-Australian corporate leader, elite athlete, entrepreneur and author of the inspirational book 'Turning Right – Inspire the Magic'. After earning a master's degree in International Business and getting awarded a doctorate in European Law in record time, Kay has worked in more than a dozen countries as a McKinsey consultant. When he reached the level of an Associate Principal, he moved to Australia and joined the Buying leadership team at Coles Supermarkets in 2011, followed by the Woolworths Group from 2017 to 2020.During his time as a corporate leader, he pursued his passion for long-distance running and learned to master the mental game. Kay stepped up from hobby marathon running to becoming one of the fastest ultramarathon runners worldwide. In his first year of ultrarunning in 2015, he improved the race record of the 250-kilometre-long Big Red Run by more than five hours. Then he joined the Australian national team in the 24-hour running format and became the fastest-ever Australian at the world championships, clocking 259.67 kilometres within 24 hours. In 2019 he got awarded the Australian Ultraperformance of the Year Award. The pivotal moment unravelling his personal transformation was a simple right turn at his garden gate. Accidently, one day Kay turned right and realised that he had never turned right at that juncture. Too much was he caught up in his need for predictability, clinging to discipline and self-control. Turning right made him realise that there was a world out there waiting for him to explore, so – metaphorically speaking – Kay started turning right more often embracing uncertainty. Over this journey he learned how to leave behind the limitations he placed on himself which prevented him from overcoming his biggest challenges and reaching his dreams. His entire perspective on what he was capable of shifted, resulting not only in performance jump but also deeper fulfillment.Since 2020, Kay dedicates himself to help leaders and organisations thrive. Through keynote speaking, executive coaching and facilitating business transformational, he inspires others to unleash their inner magic by 'turning right' themselves. Kay works with people who desire more from their existence and have the courage to lead a life where they shine brightly. He is most curious, what magic is waiting to emerge from within you and your team? Mindset with the “White Kenyan” - Ryan Crawford | EP88
This week we are talking to Ryan Crawford, aka “The White Kenyan”. He has taken the Australian ultraendurance scene by storm as is known for running insane distances with a love for “last man standing races” which is a gruelling form of competition.Ryan is a father of two sons, who has a beautiful wife who loves and supports him on his journey. He’s been competing and challenging himself in ultra-marathon running over the past five or so years. Ryan has come from a fighting and training background in the art of Muay Thai for many years prior where he achieved both National and State titles as well as balancing full-time construction work and family life. He believes that the transition was relatively smooth because training hard was no stranger to him; preparing for his fights and conditioning the body/mind was an absolute must, so his training just evolved as he did.Ryan is intent on leaving a legacy and intends to show his boys and those around him that anything is possible if you truly want it and work hard for it, also to teach them the blueprint to mastering the mind to get through tough times; for him, it’s not just about running, it’s about meeting and overcoming the challenges of life. Ryan believes we all face challenges at some time or another and having the tools and strategies to face difficulties head-on is important. Ryan is currently in the stages of building his own Muay Thai fitness gym on the family property, the name of which will be NAK SUU JAI, which means a warrior who fights to protect and defend. Why you should embody "Gentle Power" - Elisabet Lahti | EP85
“Sisu is a Finnish word for determination and intestinal fortitude in the face of extreme adversity. Gentle power is to apply sisu with both heart and reason.”These are the concepts that we are diving into on this weeks session on the show with Elisbat Lahti. Some of you may remember Elisabet from the first season of the show where we unpacked the Finnish concept of Sisu. On the show today, we talk about why we should apply the attitude of gentle power into our lives and conduct, and the impact on humanity when we do so. Elisbet says that power is fundamental in our lives―we express it in every conversation, relationship, and choice we make. All too often, we equate force and domination with power, while gentleness and compassion are considered “soft” or “weak.” The destructive nature of this skewed perspective has never been more obvious, yet there is reason to hope.Elisabet is an international presenter on topics related to positive psychology, courage, leadership, and high performance. She is also a transformational mindset coach supporting individuals who are committed to cultivating compassionate leadership and integrity in their daily lives. She conducted her PhD research for the Finland-based Aalto University School of Science and Technology in which she is pioneered the research on the ancient Finnish construct of sisu, which denotes courage and determination in the face of extreme adversity and the ability to unlock hidden inner strength when it is needed (find the research paper on embodied fortitude here and its press release here). Elisabet´s work has been featured by The New Yorker, Business Insider, Scientific American, BBC, and Forbes among others. Elisabet has given talks at Fortune500 companies such as Facebook and Salesforce, as well as Stanford University, The International World Congress on Positive Psychology, The Consciousness Summit, TEDx, and Singularity University at NASA Ames in Mountain View, California, where she also studied futurism and exponential technologies while attending their Global Solutions Programme.Elisabet has a master's degree in social psychology from the University of Tampere in Finland and in a master's degree in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, USA. She is a former student of Dr Martin Seligman and began her master thesis work on sisu was advised by research professor Dr Angela Duckworth in 2013.Notable moments in this episode:(16:49) - how does power affect men from women?(36:06) - why does gentle power need to be embraced today?(56:58) - Elizabet’s #1 piece of advice to develop your sisu***Follow Elizabet:Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/elisabetlahti.official/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/elisabet_lahti Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/sisulab LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sisulab/ Homepage: https://www.sisulab.com ***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabits Instagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/ LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/ Strava - https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468 YouTube - youtube.com/channel/UC6Wx-9NQ81K_4mZYCmoNGvQWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

Move from leader to “luminary” - Clifford Morgan | EP84
By leveraging psychological expertise and over a decade of experience within the Australian Defence Force, Clifford Morgan brings discipline, training and focus to leadership development. He has seen first-hand the effects those leaders and the quality of leadership can have on people. He’s been part of teams where poor leadership has undermined performance, eroded morale, destroyed culture and broken people. He has seen those broken people fail to live up to their potential at work and go home unable to be the husbands, wives, mothers, and fathers they should be. All too often, this has led to broken marriages and broken families. As a result, Cliff wages war against the perpetuation of poor leadership. At the same time, Cliff is also served by leaders who showed the best of what a leader could be. Those who lead in a way that transforms people into better versions of themselves. Better people mean better teams and better organisations. More importantly, these 'better people' went home and were able to be better husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers building better families, communities and ultimately, a better world.During his time in the Air Force, Cliff established the Air Force Leadership Coaching Program locally at RAAF Base Amberley. In this capacity, he coached military commanders and trained hundreds of Air Force personnel and leaders to use coaching skills to lead more effectively and be more intentional about developing people and capability. After 8 years of full-time service, Cliff hit the books and spent eight years studying to become a fully endorsed Organisational Psychologist. Nowadays, Cliff is the Executive Director of Lumian Consulting, where he spends his time helping senior leaders and their teams pursue their potential to perform at their peak. Cliff is particularly passionate about exponential leadership. This is where great leaders lead in a way that develops their people, equipping them to lead and develop others so they, in turn, become great leaders themselves. In this way, one leader can produce layers of passionate, purpose-driven and proactive leaders. The difference between optimal and peak performance - Rich Diviney | EP81
What do the world’s highest-performing teams have in common?Attributes. This is what we will be discussing on the show with retired Navy SEAL and ‘Team Six’ commander, Rich Diviney. The world’s highest-performing teams often have a clear and inspiring vision, strong leadership, and a deep sense of trust and collaboration among team members. They’re highly adaptable and able to handle complex and uncertain situations, and they are committed to ongoing learning and improvement. How did the Attributes come to be?During his twenty years as a Navy SEAL, Commander Rich Diviney was intimately involved in the world-renowned SEAL selection process, which whittles exceptional candidates down to a small cadre of the most elite optimal performers. Diviney was often surprised by which recruits washed out and which succeeded. Someone could have all the right skills and still fail, while recruits he might have initially dismissed would prove to be top performers. The seemingly objective criteria weren't telling him what he most needed to know:What does it take to be one of the highest-performing teams in the world?Through years of observation and practice, Rich learned to identify a successful recruit's core attributes, and how to choose the right candidate based on their innate traits. Combining Rich's military leadership experience with neuroscience and physiology, we have developed a series of frameworks, methods, and tools to support organizations to create high-performing teams, outlast the competition, and thrive in change and uncertainty. In our conversation, Rich defines the core Attributes in fresh and practical ways and shares stories from the military, business, sports, relationships, and even parenting to show how understanding your own Attributes and those of the people around you can create optimal performance in all areas of your life.Do you have what it takes to succeed in any situation? If the answer is “no”, then it’s important to understand the attributes you need to adopt.Notable moments in this episode:(16:36) - Why you need to focus on building on your attributes(28:49) - The top attributes that make a successful Navy SEAL(44:52) - Rich’s #1 habit of building your attributes ***Follow Rich:Buy his book: https://theattributes.com/buy/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theattributesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theattributes/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richdiviney/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@rich_diviney Twitter: https://twitter.com/richdiviney Website: https://theattributes.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/theattributes ***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabits Instagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/ LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/ Oberit - https://gr3f.co/c/50833/JYgMG Strava - https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468 YouTube - youtube.com/channel/UC6Wx-9NQ81K_4mZYCmoNGvQWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

What is the consequence of habits? - JT Frank | EP38
Joshua Frank (JT) is a proud veteran and first responder. He started his career in the United States Air Force and has spent the last 23 years protecting and serving his country as a civilian federal employee. Through his extensive time in the military and as a first responder, he has become intimately familiar with both the positive and negative lifestyle and habits associated with these career fields. Unfortunately for JT, the negative habits progressively played a larger role in his life. Through trial and error, JT realized, not only do these habits not serve him personally, they are detrimental to the long-term success and mental health of the veteran and first responder community. In 2019, JT came to crossroads in his life where, through personal reflection, he looked inwardly at what was holding him back from being the best possible version of himself. Through his exploration, JT realized the power of habit building, both negative and positive ones, in relation to happiness and success. He made major healthy lifestyle changes building better habits for himself, which have positively impacted his family, work and overall wellbeing.JT’s lifestyle changes inspired him to create the Consequence of Habit podcast in 2020 with the overall goal of empowering individuals and communities by bringing awareness to the impact habits have on mental health, success and the environment. Since then, he has had the honor of interviewing a diverse range of guests from high-ranking military officers to professional athletes to your seemingly average everyday person. The common thread in all of JT’s interviews is that his guests have made positive changes in their own lives by looking inwardly, examining their habits and making changes. JT has taken these lessons, pinpointed what worked, and incorporated them into something that benefits a broader audience. In late 2020, JT founded Consequence of Habit Inc, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to helping others establish habits to succeed and improve mental health. JT accomplishes this by continually providing stories of hope, inspiration and positive change through the CoH podcast. JT also leads CoH experiential events, short volunteer hands-on teamwork and leadership experiences that facilitate connection, purpose and challenge. What started as JT’s personal journey has now become a passion to help others make positive changes in their own lives, the community, and the environment.Notable moments in this episode: 9:10 - How JT was able to compartmentalise between life and his addiction25:37 - What the consequences of habits look like51:55 - why everyone should do AA’s 12-step program***Follow JT’s Journey:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/consequence_of_habit/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jt-frank-10090b200/ Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/www-consequence-of-habit/id1510870867 Website: https://www.consequenceofhabit.org/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOIxEwJ0iAliZsPd7VBBKjQ ***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabits Instagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/ LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/ Strava - https://www.strava.com/athletes/32692468 YouTube - youtube.com/channel/UC6Wx-9NQ81K_4mZYCmoNGvQWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

Why don’t you have deep trust with your people? - Christina Foxwell | EP37
Christina had been in hr, recruitment, consulting, training, and executive leadership and what she knew for sure was we were missing an opportunity to engage and equip people and in return, increase business performance. In her career, she has seen people step into growth, achieve the unexpected and succeed together. I am, therefore, a firm believer that people can unlock their purpose, joy, development and Performance. I also believe organisations can achieve success and high performing cultures by engaging in clarity, inclusivity, honesty, vision and measurement. In essence, I have found it’s a delicate balance between people and Performance. What has inspired my team and me to keep learning, growing and stepping into that uncomfortable place of unlocking change? It is the difference we have seen in Leadership teams, cultures and most importantly, the people (humans) we work with.We facilitate strategy, alignment, culture leadership, sales and performance workshops. We coach leaders, teams and organisations to partner, connect deeply and unlock potential and Performance. The tools we use to support our clients are, bespoke designed programs based on their individual needs—behaviour profiles (DISC & Motivators). We also use TILT365 to help personal insights on growth that aligns to coaching programs. We do impact surveys, high-performance measurement and 360 assessments. What happens when you get to the “top”? - Carter McNabb | EP34
“Years ago, I was struggling with the competing pressures of work, parenting, relationships and the expectations I put on myself. I often felt isolated in this experience, like no one else would or could understand, even though I had an active social life and solid friendship base. I received incredible support, learned new ways and experienced possibilities I wasn’t able to even imagine before. What looked like a tragedy on the way through ultimately became an incredible gift.I have been inspired to find ways to give back what I received and share what I learned with those who were looking. Why some are compelled to push beyond the edge - Jenny Valentish | EP31
The absolute extremes; why some are compelled to push beyond the edge and what can hyper-driven business people learn from these folks? There’s the neuroscientist continuously violating his brain to override his disgust response. The hardcore wrestler turning natural-born agitation into curated ultraviolence. The architect hanging from hooks in her flesh at weekends, to better get out of her head. The ultrarunner who draws parallels between his current pursuit and his former life smoking crack. The BDSM don helping people flirt with death in order to feel more alive. The ballet dancer who could not separate her identity from her practice until at death’s door. And the porn star-turned-MMA fighter for whom sex and violence are two sides of the same coin.Where this is going is there is a part of human nature compelled to test our own limits. But what happens when this part comes to define us?Which is a reason I wanted to deep-dive with Jenny Valentish, who has a new book out, ‘Everything Harder Than Everyone Else’.It’s about people willing to do the things that most others couldn’t, wouldn’t or shouldn’t. By delving into their extreme behaviour, there’s a lot that us mere mortals can learn about the human condition.Jenny is also a journalist who freelances for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Guardian, The Saturday Paper and Rolling Stone. Here’s what to expect in this episode: ✅ 20:53 - The upside to trauma✅ 31:38 - How to apply compartmentalisation to switch between the roles we play✅ 35:02 - How to avoid addiction taking over from discipline in your home life***Follow Jenny’s Journey:Books: http://www.jennyvalentish.com/books/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JennyValentish Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennyvalentish_public/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenny-valentish-9954781a/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jennyvalentish Website: http://www.jennyvalentish.com/ ***Follow & Subscribe to the Ultrahabits Journey:Apple - podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-ultra-habits-podcast/id1551339373Spotify - open.spotify.com/show/0eWBOT8L1ShaRy5aoPxOHpFacebook - facebook.com/ultrahabits Instagram - instagram.com/ultra.habits/ LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/rj-singh-801a0436/ YouTube - youtube.com/channel/UC6Wx-9NQ81K_4mZYCmoNGvQWebsite - ultrahabits.co/Rate the podcast - https://ratethispodcast.com/ultrahabits

EP16 | Charlie Engle: From crack addiction to running 4500 miles across the Sahara Desert
After a decade-long addiction to crack cocaine and alcohol, Charlie Engle hit bottom with a near-fatal six-day binge that ended in a hail of bullets. As Engle got sober, he turned to running, which became his lifeline, his pastime, and his salvation. He began with marathons, and when marathons weren't far enough, he began to take on ultramarathons, races that went for thirty-five, fifty, and sometimes hundreds of miles, traveling to some of the most unforgiving places on earth to race. The Matt Damon-produced documentary, Running the Sahara, followed Engle as he led a team on a harrowing, record breaking 4,500-mile run across the Sahara Desert, which helped raise millions of dollars for charity. Charlie's growing notoriety led to an investigation and a subsequent unjust conviction for mortgage fraud. Engle would spend sixteen months in federal prison in Beckley, West Virginia. While in jail, he pounded the small prison track, running endlessly in circles. Soon his fellow inmates were joining him, struggling to keep their spirits up in dehumanizing circumstances. In his book, Running Man, Charlie Engle tells the gripping, surprising, funny, emotional, and inspiring story of his life, detailing his setbacks and struggles--from coping with addiction to serving time in prison--and how he blazed a path to freedom by putting one foot in front of the other. This is a propulsive, raw, and triumphant story about finding the threshold of human endurance, and transcending it. What is the great lesson we have with the pain we go through in life?By adopting an action mindset known as ‘Sisu’.Sisu is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, the tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness. The purpose of this is to have a competitive edge too because to be compassionate, human-centred and have integrity makes people work better and it creates better results in the long run.Emilia has a master's degree in social psychology from the University of Tampere in Finland and in a master's in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a former student of Dr. Martin Seligman and began researching the Finnish construct of sisu under the mentorship of MacArthur Fellow recipient and research professor Dr. Angela Duckworth in 2012.In this episode: The importance of trusting your gut, the relevance of your gut-brain.
