94. How Losing Yourself in Teaching Fuels Burnout: 3 Ways to Detach Your Worth From Work and Find Balance

Have you ever felt like your job as a teacher isn't just a part of your life, but somehow, it's started to be your life? You're not alone. Many of us teachers have find ourselves caught in a cycle where the lines between professional and personal blur—a phenomenon psychologists call "enmeshment." It's like our work has slowly woven itself into every fiber of our being, dictating not just how we spend our hours but also shaping our identity and worth. While being passionate and dedicated is admirable, this enmeshment can steer us toward a dangerous cliff of exhaustion and burnout. It's a reality many of us face, yet struggle to navigate. The question then becomes, how do we untangle ourselves from this intricate web and reclaim our autonomy, ensuring our jobs enrich, not consume, our lives? In this episode, we talk about how identity loss is a byproduct of burnout, how preserving our personal life is protective, and the three things we can do today to detach our worth and find balance.HEAD OVER TO THE SHOW NOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode94👉Join the FREE Resilient Teacher Community on Facebook: http://www.teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/supportsquad📝 Want a FREE personalized step-by-step guide to crushing teacher burnout? 42. Teach Smarter, Not Harder: Achieving Sustainability without Sacrificing Your Life [SUSTAINABILITY SERIES]

If you put one hundred teachers in a room together and asked them what would make teaching a sustainable career, they would all give you different answers. However, those answers would all fit within three different areas: Support, Action, and Mindset, which are the Spheres to Sustainable Teaching. If you ask 100 teachers if teaching has ever made them sacrifice their personal life, 95% of them would say that it has. That's why we've got to start working smarter, not harder if we want to sustain this career long-term. A common misconception that many educators fall prey to is that in order to be an effective educator you have to work longer hours, take work home, and do EVERYTHING you can. It's easy to believe that the more time you put into your work, the better your outcomes will be. However, the truth is that working longer hours often leads to burnout and ultimately hinders your effectiveness as a teacher. In this episode, we will bust this myth and give you the keys to shifting your mindset in the second episode of The Sustainability Series.HEAD OVER TO THE SHOWNOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode42👉Join the FREE Resilient Teacher Community on Facebook: http://www.teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/supportsquad📝 Want a FREE personalized step-by-step guide to crushing teacher burnout? 39. From Stressed to Serene: The Positive Impact of Movement on Teacher Mental Health with Andrea Mishio

I am so excited to be talking about today's topic – how movement impacts your mental health – although I'm most excited for my guest to take the lead because, frankly, I've never been a huge fan of exercise. As someone who grew up listening to diet culture and thinking of exercise as a means to weight loss, I am not an expert in getting fit or sustaining a movement routine that works well. Nonetheless, I know one thing to be true: movement has been scientifically proven to reduce and even protect from depression, anxiety, and burnout. So much so that studies have used brain imaging to show the effects of exercise on the brain and found that exercise can increase the production of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, that play a role in regulating mood and emotions. Plus, as we've talked about in regards to the stress cycle on the podcast before, our body is conditioned to want to run when triggered by stress and in fight or flight mode. Instead of running from exercise, we’re running to my guest, Andrea Mishio, to get all the deets on how we can begin using movement for overall mental health and resilience.Andrea Mishio has been a dynamic junior high school teacher for 10 years. She is the mother of 2 girls, and has been married to her husband for 19 years. Through her fitness journey, she has discovered a passion for health, and for helping others become healthier & happier versions of themselves.HEAD OVER TO THE SHOW NOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode39👉Join the FREE Resilient Teacher Community on Facebook: http://www.teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/supportsquad📝 Want a FREE personalized step-by-step guide to crushing teacher burnout? 37. Reigniting Passion for Teaching with Student Engagement & Classroom Transformations with Special Guest Natalie Blackman

Are you a teacher who is burnout or feeling overwhelmed, disengaged, and defeated? Finding our unique strengths in our classroom, in our lives, and in our job can really improve our overall sense of well-being and finding our passion. Not everyone was meant to be a teacher, but I believe that if you are here or listening to this podcast then there is a reason you wanted to make an impact in a classroom and finding that unique strength that you hold can be the difference between surviving and thriving in your career. That's why I am excited to have Natalie Blackman as a guest in this episode to chat about how she ignited her passion for teaching with her creativity through student engagement and classroom transformations. Now here's a little known fact that not enough people are talking about. While there are a ton of well-being practices in our world, there is evidence and research that shows how engaging in everyday creative behaviors for just 15 minutes can shift not only your motivation but your overall wellbeing. Simply making the rephrased statement of "I'm working on finding my passions again" instead of "I'm so burnt out I have no idea what I like or who I am anymore" can make a huge improvement in reigniting that passion. Scientifically speaking, the antidote to burnout isn't just sitting around and doing nothing; it's making space for things that give you joy. Creative flow is restorative. Natalie is the epitome of merging her creativity into her classroom.Natalie Blackman, who you might know as The Teaching Files on social media is a 6th grade math and student leadership teacher and coach, who is passionate about student engagement. Her love of iced coffee, school supplies, and reality T.V. is evident in her energy, love, and ideas for creating activities, lessons, and resources that reach students and make learning & teaching fun again.HEAD OVER TO THE SHOW NOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode37👉Join the FREE Resilient Teacher Community on Facebook: http://www.teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/supportsquad📝 Want a FREE personalized step-by-step guide to crushing teacher burnout? 31.The Power of Teacher SEL (it's not just for your students) with Special Guest Elizabeth Peterson

SEL is a big buzz word in education. We've heard how powerful it is and how it needs to be implemented for our students, but what about the teachers? SEL, or social emotional learning, is a LIFE LONG process. It's where we gather this knowledge, skills, attitude that really support us in managing our emotions, navigating those social interactions, and really just regulation in general. It doesn't stop being important once we get to doing our adult life. I believe that SEL for teachers is one of these components that is missing in our current system because the power of SEL is in its ability to improve well-being and effectiveness, even for us as educators. When we have a SEL practice or reflection time, we can better handle these challenges and demands of teaching, where we are more satisfied with our jobs, but also impact us to the point where we have better classroom management and better student outcomes, which is just a ripple effect into our classroom, school, and community culture. That's why I am joined in this episode by Elizabeth Peterson of The Inspired Classroom to talk all things Teacher SEL (or SEAL as she likes to refer to it) and the power that it has on really overcoming, recovering from, and preventing burnout. Elizabeth Peterson loves helping caring, creative teachers bring the arts practically and meaningfully into their classrooms. An arts integration specialist with degrees in Arts, Leadership and Learning, she hosts theinspiredclassroom.com. Elizabeth is the creator of SEAL, Social-Emotional Artistic Learning: a unique and holistic method of integrating the arts with SEL. She is in her 24th year of teaching and 16th year of hosting workshops, retreats and online courses in arts integration and SEAL. Elizabeth believes that when caring, creative teachers feel empowered with SEAL strategies in their classroom, they make a difference in their students’ lives every day.HEAD OVER TO THE SHOWNOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode31👉Join the FREE Resilient Teacher Community on Facebook: http://www.teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/supportsquad📝 Want a FREE personalized step-by-step guide to crushing teacher burnout? 30. Why Your Teacher Planner is not Going to Solve Your Teacher Burnout Issues (but what will)

Teacher planners are a hot commodity. You see your teacher friends come to meetings with their pretty highlighted, color coded, and washi taped pages because planners help you stay on track, right? Statistically speaking, no. A new teacher planner is not going to solve all of your teacher burnout problems. Instead, it is possible for your planner to be CAUSING you more issues? Don't get me wrong, I love a good planner. My personal favorite way to plan is through digital planning, which I have turned into a complete work flow for all things teaching related. In this episode, I dive into why your teacher planner is not going to get you out of burnout and what we can do to really hack our system and use our planner as a tool to beat burnout.CHECK OUT THE SHOW NOTES: teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/episode30👉Join the FREE Resilient Teacher Community on Facebook: http://www.teachingmindbodyandsoul.com/supportsquad📝 Want a FREE personalized step-by-step guide to crushing teacher burnout? 29. Compassion Fatigue: The Cost of Caring for Teachers with Special Guest Ayesis Clay

Did you know that teacher burnout and compassion fatigue are very different experiences? Teachers in the field are dealing with a lot, yes, but how can we tell which it is? Compassion fatigue refers the outcome that teachers experience when they absorb the trauma or the emotions of others while helping and supporting them. Most teachers are empathic, which is really a key component of connecting and developing relationships with our students and colleagues. However, there is a downside if you are not protecting yourself and that results in compassion fatigue. That's why I had to bring Ayesis Clay on the show to chat more about compassion fatigue and her spectacular, innovative way of supporting educators with recognizing this detrimental and common condition.Ayesis Clay, a distinguished theatre educator and professional theatre artist, is best known for her solo show “Sculpting Clay or How I Became Mother of Unicorns”, a fantastical look at one teacher’s epic journey through education battling compassion fatigue and burnout while finding hope on the other side. She has also written and developed curricula for school districts and many local and regional theatre companies.Combining her extensive background in theatre and education, Ayesis founded Sculpted Clay Productions LLC, where she uses theatre-infused residencies and professional development workshops to help schools address teacher and student mental wellness and inspire deeper conversations around creativity and humanity in education. 23. Feed Your Energy In and Out of the Classroom with Special Guest Bre Baildon

EPISODE 23In this episode of The Resilient Teacher Podcast, we are talking more about energy levels. Energy levels are sometimes impacted by our mindset, expectations, but it can also be heavily influenced by our overall health and wellness. Because teachers have limited energy due to decision fatigue and stress, it can be difficult to make sustainable changes to things like nutrition which can be used as a TOOL to get our minds and bodies working optimally so that our systems can effectively manage and balance our blood sugar levels, hormones, and all those internal pieces that help our bodies be resilient to stress. Nutrition is a big piece of the puzzle but this episode is NOT about nutrition for weight loss. We are going to be chatting with Bre Baildon, who is my favorite teacher dietician, about how nutrition impacts our energy and stress in and out of the classroom, how to create lasting nutritional change when you don't have motivation, and some ideas for low-prep lunches so you maintain your energy. Bre is a registered dietitian who helps teachers stop stressing about food or their health so that they can gain more time and energy to do the things they truly want to do. She makes healthy eating practical, delicious, and sustainable for educators to feel better and be present in and out of the classroom. As the wife of an international middle school teacher, Bre has worked with educators and schools all around the world to prioritize all aspects of teacher health and wellbeing. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Concordia College and a Master’s degree in Health & Wellness Coaching from Creighton University.
