Clarity is something we all seek. But real clarity, the kind we need when the stakes are high and change is the only option, this can only come about through some sort of disruption to our routines, ideas, and assumptions about how the world works. Well established patterns, routines, and ideas, while they may be beneficial at first, eventually lead to complacency. And the definition of "complacency" according to dictionary.com is, "a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like." Sometimes discovering new possibilities is as simple as switching your point of view from projection to reflection. Projecting out into the future from the present day only gives you a limited perspective based on what you currently know or have experienced. It can be hard to see past the obstacles right in front of you. What will you be most proud of in 10 years? It’s amazing what starts to unfold when you ask yourself that question first. Far too often we focus on what we want to accomplish in the next 10 years without considering whether or not it will bring us real pride and fulfilment long-term. What stories have you attached to the pivotal events of your past? Whether you realize it or not, the meaning you’ve attached to those events impact the decisions you make going forward. These stories define who you believe yourself to be, and therefore, impact who you ultimately become. That’s why now is a good time to revisit those events and decide if the stories you tell yourself about them are helping you become the person you want to be. What lessons have you learned over time? How have you grown and evolved? Here are 3 tenets that define how I see the future:  #1 - People create the future, not technology. Technology is just a tool that requires human intention behind it to drive and shape any kind of change. #2 - The future is to be created, not predicted. To predict the future is to assume that it’s set in stone, which is ridiculous.  #3 - The future is useless if you can’t leverage it now. Accommodation reinforces the way that currently do things by making it easier or faster, while REAL innovation takes us beyond what we’re currently doing and into new territory.Here’s how to spur real REAL innovation:1) IDENTIFY an emerging trend or technology that is here today but the full implications are not known yet. i.e. AI, Big Data, Gene Editing, etc. 2) CHALLENGE the baseline assumptions about this issue and the changes it will bring. This is where you go beyond the original intent of the technology and try to imagine the unintended consequences AND unrealized opportunities that it holds. 3) EXPLORE the broader implications (social, political, economic, etc.) of this technology on the future as a whole. What needs, desires, challenges, and opportunities, arise within the broader context? There’s nothing wrong with predictions themselves. The problem comes in how we relate to predictions.It’s our nature to seek comfort and certainty, so we often rely too heavily on predictions to accurately tell us what to expect.Predictions are only useful for understanding what “the experts” currently believe is probable.*But, we’re constantly receiving new information about a rapidly evolving world, so we have to treat predictions as just one piece of a much larger puzzle.If you want a broader understanding of the future, then you must be able to set predictions aside and ask: “What else might be possible?”* “The experts” tend to be anyone with a public platform whether they have true expertise in an area or not. We need a new approach to scenario planning that unleashes greater CREATIVITY and leads to greater opportunity.Instead of thinking of scenarios as alternative futures that we need to plan for, we should think of them as STORIES that we need to write.The goal of each scenario is to create a context, or setting for this future story, in which you and the people you serve are characters.The plot becomes the actions you take that will help the people you serve overcome whatever obstacles exist in this future context.Why this approach? Certainty creates boundaries, putting a box around what is possible and limiting your ability to create an alternative outcome. For instance, if an outcome seems certain, you have no incentive to try to change it.With uncertainty, the boundaries have not been set, the outcome is unknown, and the possibilities are endless. If you want to create a powerful vision for the future, remember these 3 steps:Start in the future - You can’t take what you’re currently doing and project it forward, because the future will look different and what you do now may no longer be relevant. You have to start in the future, and re-imagine what you COULD be doing in that new context.Think about the PEOPLE you serve - Before you know what you’ll be doing in the future, you have to know what the people you serve are doing. How are they faring? What are their challenges and aspirations? This will of course determine how you can best serve THEM.Put it into words that are both accessible and inspirational - You have to create a picture of the vision that people can see and relate to instantly.
