There comes a time in every teacher’s life when you make the decision to leave the classroom.  Many leave after years of a fulfilling career for the greener pastures  of retirement.  Some leave to raise families and may return at a later date.  And there are some that decide teaching isn’t for them and leave the profession entirely. Yet there is a growing number of teachers, myself included, that begin to feel constrained by the walls of their classroom.  They know they have something to offer on a wider platform to a broader audience.  They want to serve more than the students in their classes or the staff in their districts. I’ve always been a people pleaser, and it is in my nature to want to be liked.  I don’t know if that is good or bad, but it is who I am. I think there are a lot of us out there in education. The teachers that want to be liked by students, parents, administrators, and colleagues.  Sometimes this can be contrary to what the job entails such as student and parent relationships.  It’s just not possible to be liked by everyone and be seen as the leader of your class. And sometimes you just have to deal with those that are not so nice themselves.  Quite honestly, it can be a blow to your confidence and self-worth. By this time in the year, you are becoming very familiar with your students strengths and weaknesses, particularly when it comes to reading. And you probably have a number of students where reading aloud is difficult, if not painful. Reading fluency is actually a  product of strong decoding and strong language comprehension.  It can tell us a great deal about our students' ability to process advanced phonics patterns through word attack and their ability to read for meaning and comprehend text. I recently spent the weekend with my 3 best girlfriends in the world!  Like all good girls weekends, each morning we chat over coffee about all things from world peace to new wrinkle repair products we’ve discovered. Inevitably we start chatting about retirement planning as we dream of a new footloose and fancy free lifestyle. One of my girls, who is also a teacher of 20 plus years, mentions that she needs to find units to move up the pay scale.  I’m thinking, ‘what?!  Now?! Did you know that children can display symptoms of dyslexia as early as 3 years old?  Seriously!   You might wonder how that’s even possible when three year olds mostly don’t know their letters and sounds, much less know how to read. The short answer is that dyslexia lies with a deficit within an early foundational pre reading skill.  And guess what… we know what that skill is… we also know that it can be taught… and when we teach it, students' reading achievement improves! The single most important thing you need from your students so that you can teach and they can learn is their attention.  Without it, you are talking to the walls. As a reading specialist, I was often sought out by other teachers to help figure out, or dare I say “fix”, academic issues they would find in their students.  One of the most common conversations went something like this, “Hey Emily, I’ve got this kid and he can’t comprehend.  What should I do?”   My first response was always, “Why?”  You see there are so many reasons why a student may struggle with comprehension at all grades.  Poor comprehension may be an underlying symptom of  a deeper deficit, and that deficit, not the comprehension issue, determines the course of intervention that the student requires. As you get to know your new students, you will find yourself collecting and analyzing all sorts of data to figure out what they can and can’t do yet.  If you listened to part 1 of this topic from last week’s episode we explored the assessment options at various grade levels and the importance of collecting the data yourself.  Now the big question is, “What do you do with all of this data?”  That’s a big topic that we will break down into digestible chunks today. Teaching is a calling.  At least it was for me.  I was a senior in high school and volunteered for our local Special Olympics track and field event.  From the moment I stepped off of the bus and our teacher buddied us up with our pals for the day, I was hooked!  I was given so much responsibility to watch over, play with, and connect with my little buddy.  She was non verbal and in a wheel chair and had the most beautiful smile!  I was smitten!  I knew by the end of that day what my life goal was to be - I would be a special education teacher.  I was sure of it.  I’ll tell you more about my journey and a few nuggets of wisdom in this episode. Oh those new teacher competency exams:  the RICA, edTPAs, CSET, PRAXIS, Foundations of Reading exam… the list goes on and on!  I get it... the frustration of yet again another hoop you have to jump through to finally get into the classroom.  You are tired! The tragic events that unfolded at Robb Elementary last week drop us all to our knees.  Mass shootings should not happen.  Children should not have to fear for their safety while at school. Teacher see all kinds of kids come through their classes, even those at risk for heinous crimes.  What, then, can teachers do to positively impact our marginalized students?  How can you connect with your students so they don't feel isolated?  What can you control. In today’s episode we are going to learn to say NO to over extending yourself. You know why so many of us become teachers?  Because we were good students.  And you know what good students do?  They over-achieve.  You know why this same philosophy won’t work as a teacher? - Because it causes burn out! Of course you have to do your fair share of the heavy lifting.  You are part of a team after all, but be very careful about taking on too much while you are new.  Going to school, perfecting your craft, and finishing your credential and course work are a full time job in and of itself. As a new teacher, you want to make an impact and do right by your students, but you need confidence, a tool kit, and a support system. Why is this so important?
