The JSE's Caribbean Business Exchange

The Jamaica Stock Exchange and You is brought to you by CUMAX Wealth Management, "making more possible." Cable television is a system of delivering television programming to viewers via radio frequency signals transmitted through electrical cables; in more recent systems, light pulses through fibre-optic cables. You might be wondering why I am opening up with this information about cable TV on the JSE's podcast. I have a good cause. The JSE's mission is to contribute to the growth and development of the territories where they conduct business, by facilitating the mobilization, exchange, and expansion of capital while providing a return on equity acceptable to their shareholders. I know first-hand that the organization does nothing that is out of alignment with its vision and mission. Today, we will examine how the JSE's latest venture, the Caribbean Business Exchange, aligns with its mission and vision. To tell us all about that is Andre Gooden, Business Development Manager at the JSE. Some of what we looked at were: What is the CBX? How does the CBX align to the mission & vision of the JSE? How will the CBX benefit investors? What kind of content can we expect from the CBX? How will the CBX be different from what already exists? And lots more. Credit Ratings Made Simple

At some point in the life of an individual, organization or government, they will need to borrow money to fund their projects. Lending agencies will want to ensure that they are creditworthy, which their credit ratings can help determine. A credit rating can be assigned to any entity that seeks to borrow, whether it be an individual, a corporation, a state or a sovereign government. To simplify an otherwise complex issue of credit ratings is Wayne Dass, CEO of Caribbean Information & Credit Rating Services Ltd (CariCRIS). Some of what we looked at were: Which credit ratings are investment grade? The credit rating continuum What's the Difference Between Credit Ratings and Credit Scores? What are some of the things taken into account to determine credit worthiness? And lots more. With the onset of the pandemic which has seen a migration of the world to the online space, it has become even more critical for us to be intentional when conducting business particularly in the online space. Why Messages of Hope, Love and Peace are Important to the Development of Our Economy

Up until recent decades when behavioral economics has led to renewed attention to emotion and subjectivity, subjective approaches such as hope, peace and love were not seen as good fits when having dialogue about the economy. Rather, there was much more focus on rationality, self-interests and other objective benchmarks. The effects of hope are positive, ranging from longevity and health to innovation and well-being. But false hopes, disappointment, or possible manipulation of societal hope must be guarded against. Nevertheless, in these atypical times, we need a spirit of hope, love and peace to help us navigate our economic restoration. To help me explore the topic of “Why messages of hope, love and peace are importing the development of our economy,” is Dr Donald Rhodd, Love Changes Life. Some of what we looked at were: In these times when we have important things to focus on like GDP, finance, exchange rates etc to focus on, why is it important to spread messages of hope, love and peace? What is the relationship of these principles to economic development? And lots more. The Role of Mental Health in Achieving Economic Wellness

According to psychiatrictimes.com.  "A new Lancet Commission report on mental health said that mental disorders are on the rise in every country in the world and will cost the global economy $16 trillion by 2030...“Mental health is often neglected and underfunded, even though nearly 2 billion people suffer from mental illness every year...As young people face the brunt of the global burden of mental illnesses, the report places great emphasis on experiences in childhood and adolescence, which shape life-long mental health."  Clearly, there is a cost to society when its citizenry isn't whole in all areas of their lives. Dr Donovan Thomas, Founder, Choose Life International joins me today to talk about "The Role of Mental Health in Achieving Economic Wellness." Some of what we looked at were: How is mental health impacting our society? Is there is a link to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety with the suicide rate in Jamaica? Who is affected? Music as a Viable Means of Social Intervention

In the words of Bob Marley, "One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain." We know that music has several benefits including improving mood, decreasing pain and anxiety, and facilitating opportunities for emotional expression. Over the years, countless research suggests that music is good for our physical and mental health in numerous ways. BUT does it also have the potential to be an effective and viable means of social intervention especially in areas of the inner-city? The Value of Private Sector Support for the Social Sector

Countries, companies and constituents all aspire to achieve development. Oftentimes, this comes at the expense of putting our future generations at risk. The question is, does development really occur if what we do doesn't leave the world better than we found it? Is it worth it if our actions leave our planet in distress? Does the end justify the means? Over the years, markets and socialism have been looked at as being mutually exclusive concepts.  In recent times, we have seen somewhat of a middle ground taking its place in the traditional market dichotomy. The result is a sweet spot that takes into account social business, impact investing and now even social stock exchanges. Why is it necessary for the private sector to support the social sector?  We will find out in this episode. I have invited the Hon. Thalia Lyn, JSSE Brand Ambassador to talk about  the Value of Private Sector Support for the Social Sector. Some of what we looked at were: You are an Ambassador for the Jamaica Social Stock Exchange, what does this mean? Bringing Cayman and Jamaica Stock Market Closer – Creating a Bigger Market for Investors

In a 2018 bloomberg.com article, it states, "It doesn’t take much investment to make a tiny market boom, and the total value of the 37 stocks in the main Jamaica index is less than $11 billion, smaller than the valuation of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc."  But does size really matter and how can we work with our neighbours in ensuring that we create a bigger market for our investors? This week we travel virtually across the waters to delve into the topic, "Bringing Cayman and Jamaica Stock Market closer – Creating a bigger Market for Investors." Jermaine Deans, Managing Director, JN Cayman is my guest today. Some of what we looked at were: What makes the island investable? Have you been finding value in the information we've been sharing? Great, there is much more in store for you. Last week we looked at "Rationalizing your portfolio in a pandemic" where Shelly-Ann Morgan from Sagicor fed us with insight into what goes into rationalizing, evaluating and thoughts about diversification for your overall investment portfolio. History has shown us that every 10 years or so there is a financial crisis so we may as well brace ourselves to deal with that reality. Of course, there is nothing that could have prepared us for this global health crisis that has been plaguing us sinc 2020. In fact, it actually started in 2019. Hence the name COVID-19. This week we are zooming in on your stock portfolio as we explore the topic, "preparing your portfolio to withstand economic shocks." To take us through this discourse is Stockbroker, Investor & Businessman, who serves as VP – Investor Relations, GK Capital, Ryan Strachan. Diaspora Support for the Jamaica Stock Exchange Group

It's Season 3 of “The Jamaica Stock  Exchange & You Podcast,” and I am your host, I'm Heneka Watkis-Porter. Time can go by so quickly because it seems like just yesterday that we launched this podcast and here is Season 3. Anyways, The Jamaica Stock Exchange is the principal stock exchange of Jamaica and is one of the largest stock exchanges in the Caribbean by size and market capitalization. The JSE Group has evolved over time into a strong and reputable business, a force to be reckoned with, not just in Jamaica nor the region globally being recognized as the world's best performing stock exchange on more than 1 occasions. Notwithstanding its size and impact, the leadership will be the first to declare that it is not because of their effort alone. The JSE enjoys the support of organizations and persons both locally and abroad to assist it in carrying out its mandate of the mobilization of capital to facilitate the growth and development of companies and by extension the Jamaican economy. Today, Consulate General Alsion Roach-Wilson joins me to talk about the Diaspora Support for the Jamaica Stock Exchange Group. Welcome Consul General Roach-Wilson. Some of what we looked at were: In what ways can the Consulate General New York increase Diaspora support for the Jamaica Stock Exchange in the United States?
