David Cross discusses his time inside and out of King Crimson, including his various solo outings and some Crimson-adjacent projects! This episode starts with a grunge.com article about albums released in '74, and turning 50, but The Imbalanced Boys realized there was much more to 1974 than the writer covered. How can you fail to include Rock n' Roll Animal by Lou Reed, as an example. So, Markus and Ray dive into that rabbit hole in the second half of this week's podcast. We looked into an article on Louder Sound that talked about the longest runs on the Billboard album chart. That chart started as a Top 10 in the 1950s, expanding through to 1967 when it became the Billboard 200! That's name most of us know. This adventure just might include the most artists not previously profiled in one of our episodes: Lana Del Rey, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Adele. Add chart champs of the '50s (Johnny Mathis, My Fair Lady OST), and this is a different musical journey. There's even a little controversy about Pink Floyd's "Dark Side" run (solved by the Research Team), and a ton more to discover. To add contrast the Boys also discuss the record-setting chart runs versus album sales. Jim Gordon was a kid who loved to play drums. Where would that love take him? Basically, everywhere! His inventive, musical percussion style created an incredible demand for his services. Having Jim on drums could change the fate of a recording project, and often did! The success and impact of Gordon's playing was legendary, long before the June 1983 murder of his mother, Osa. The voices "won" following a long, arduous struggle with his mental health. The voices in Jim's head led to a series of heinous actions, leading to murder and prison, after a decade of trying to get help for his then-undiagnosed mental illness. Author Joel Selvin (Altamont: The Rolling Stones, Hollywood Eden, Summer Of Love) visits The Imbalanced Boys to discuss his forthcoming book: Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon, out February 27th through Diversion Books! Can anyone help us identify ALL of the members of this increasingly infamous I Hear Dead People illustration. The original, and the basis for this episode's discussion, is from a flickr post, entitled, "Eu ouco gente morta...o tempo todo!" Since then, we have seen it in other posts, including in English labelled as "I hear dead people, and they're still the best!" But that use of the illustration is trimmed, with a few people knocked out of the frame. So we stuck with the best version, even after finding version #3, which has some of the same people, or the same people at a different age than in the original, and also some other, different people that weren't in the flickr version. Bob Dylan burst onto the American Folk scene shortly after he arrived in New York City. Quickly, he made major impressions inside the local music community via Greenwich Village, and as a popular artist upon releasing his first few records on Columbia. He and The Beatles immediately hit it off with mutual admiration and inspiration. Dylan's expanded musical pallet was part of the early sessions for what became, Highway 61 Revisited! With his 3rd appearance at the influential 1965 Newport Folk Festival looming in late July, he packed up his studio band, and made a plan to "go electric at Newport..." Oh the times they were a-changin' alright by 1967! Something was in the air in the United States, and globally. In the U.S., it was a social/political/cultural shift, embraced mostly by young people at first. Social change was being fueled by racial tensions, and a break with the past by a new generation, who in many cases shared the politics and struggle of civil rights, as well as opposition to the Vietnam War. The epicenter of The Summer Of Love was San Francisco, but there were other cities that shared the lifestyle and music of the hippies of The Haight. Also important is that the events of '67 fell in behind trends and shifts in thinking that started in 1965 or '66. Markus and Ray go through that tumultuous and wonderful year, then dig deeper into the music that made it great!!! The idea for this episode came from a quote, now lost, even to Google apparently, that the first four Peter Gabriel solo albums are actually a large song cycle. In exploring possible sonic connections, researching and producing this episode, we discovered evidence of that being the case. Both within each of the self-titled albums, and between them... JIMMY WEBB on DAVD CROSBY: Croz, as he was known to his friends, was a gregarious, mischievous, sensitive guy who you could have a legitimate conversation with. I remember the first time I saw him up close: He had driven his black Mercedes Benz 450 SEL out into the desert to go sailplaning with me. He got out of the big sedan in a cloud of dust and strode toward me like a giant, a big grin plastered across his face. I knew in that instant that he was absolutely stone-not-afraid to ride in a glider or anything else you might think of. Conditions were lousy that day so I paid for an extra long tow, up to 10,000 feet because I knew rightly enough that we wouldn’t be airborne for very long. I muddled around and kept us up for around 40 minutes or so, and the whole time he was like a child with a new toy. He was inquisitive about every detail of the mechanisms on board and did not get airsick - unlike some others I could mention! We landed safely in the late afternoon after a bond had been formed up about 5000 feet as we waved to hikers on the side of Mount Baden-Powell.   At the time I knew of him from my friend Art Garfunkel, who had used him profusely on backgrounds for the Watermark album, which Art and I cut with Barry Beckett in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. From listening to his lilting concert tenor on Artie’s rough mixes, I resolved that if I could get him to do it, I would have him sing some backgrounds on some of my stuff. Endearingly, he came at first call and brought Graham Nash along with him. Most recently, he and Graham sang backgrounds on my song, “If These Walls Could Speak”, from my Fred Mollin-produced Still Within The Sound Of My Voice (2013). It’s possible that this will turn out to be the last recording the two made together. He was there for me at Alice Tully Hall (NYC) the night a plethora of names showed up for my live concert birthday party. In short, whenever I asked him, he was there. If I have one regret in my life at this moment, it’s that I didn’t make time to get on the sailboat with him when I was asked during a rather busy trip to California. But he wouldn’t want me to look back with any regret about anything. He was just that kind of cool, easy-going, sweet guy. His was a gigantic star, it shines still there somewhere above the Southern Cross, this sailor, prophet, humanitarian, intellectual, and songwriter. Oh, and lest I forget, father as well.  It’s natural to feel a little emptiness when a friend passes but in this case I am aching and grieving for a whole magic, scintillating era of unsurpassed music, a time of beauty and elegance in musical art. In my mind he stands for all of that. The political conscience applied to the art of communicating with the masses. I was at David Geffen’s house the afternoon Graham and Croz showed up with a little number called “Four Dead in Ohio”. When I heard it, they were angry and it resonated off the walls of the house in a way that made me think: this is a song that will change things. Godspeed, David. Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott, and his friend, and cohort, Gary Moore worked together from their youth, on and off. They recorded in a band called Skid Row, and would associate through the decades, until Phil's death in 1986 at age 36. That included stints in Thin Lizzy, the band Phil led, which we explore this week. How and why Brian came to the project via an epiphany of sorts is discussed, and he explains how he went from looking into Martin's Caribbean recording oasis to visiting it in its current state. Artists making music without rules or limits set the tone for the advent of the Progressive Rock era! Genesis didn't set the world on fire at the start (not unlike other progressive pioneers), but their influence grew and changed through their early phase, even after Peter's solo departure. This episode is the story of a lost live album by the great Johnny & June Carter Cash, recorded shortly after the legendary Folsom Prison live album. The contrast in energy of these two nights is stark, and part of the discussion. The mood the night of the show was appropriately laid back for San Francisco. The Carousel Ballroom, which would shortly become the Fillmore (West), hosted the April 24, 1968 concert, and tape was rolling, as was the case when Owlsley Stanley was at the sound board. He recorded most shows that he mixed, which gives purpose to his foundation's modern mission of preservation. This Cash album could do a lot of good in that area. Up until the mid to late 1980's most of the world didn't care about the Seattle music scene. The years 1978 & 1979 are significant in the Rock And Roll Timeline. The first wave of Punk Rock and Alternative were evolving and growing into so much more. We are taking a look at these two years and their significance to what was happening with the New Wave coming because of bands like The Jam, XTC, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, etc. Post Punk going strong because of bands like Gang Of Four, The X-Ray Spex, Generation X, The Stranglers and more. The growth of the Gothic branch with bands like The Damned, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure and Joy Division setting the course for what was ahead. The Second wave of Ska was gaining momentum with the creation of Two-Tone Records and the emergence of The Specials. And, the sound of Hardcore punk because of bands like The Germs were starting to take root in cities across the world.
