#146 - June 8th, 2015 [2Pac, DJ Shadow, Z-Trip, Jackson 5, Fatboy Slim]

Back once again with the ill behavior. It’s freakin’ summer and there’s no better summer anthem than 2Pac praising California. DJ Shadow cuts himself up before The Papes Come, Z-Trip remixes the Jackson 5 (with subtlety and class) and we drop classic summertime RJD2. The Herbaliser brings the heat with a storming live one and the Propellerheads do their best James Bond movie score climaxing with a ripping bassline. MARRS and Dee-Lite get us shaking our booty before we have a flashback to Summer Love ’98 from Fatboy Slim. The lord giveth and the lord taketh away, but not hiphop yo.

After the break we start dark and moody with M.Rahn and then somehow end up at the opposite side of the spectrum raving out to a Rihanna remix followed by some seriously old school rave stylee from Tin Man. If we weren't so secure with our music selections over the past 90 shows we'd be ashamed but we aren't. DJ Kentaro brings us back to the now with his remix of Reso's Check 1,2 and Modeselektor cry out for the bass drum. The Beasties bring us home in fine style as we try to figure out what the hell we just played. www.HoweSoundSystem.com www.facebook.com/HoweSoundSystem Tracklist: Beastie Boys - DOn't Play No Game That I can't Win DJ Spooky - Revolution Disco Dub Machinedrum - Gunshotta Paper Diamond - All Green Lights Trouble Andrew - Adorable M.Rahn - Confused Mass Rihanna - Where Have You Been? "I like the little things. I like the sound an ice cube makes when you drop it from just the right height". And so begins our homage to single malt. We kick it off all Speysidey with Van Morrison's classic jam meditation on a friend's death with T.B. Sheets. Then we get all rock psychedelic with Kaleidoscope's Beacon From Mars. We head on over to Islay for some darker, smokier tunes with DJ Shadow providing some soulful guitar before a couple of numbers by the true masters of soul Milt Jackson and Ray Charles riffing off one another like no one else can. Things get really heady once we crack open the Ardbeg and put on some DJ Krush (sampling Black Sabbath no less) and a little more DJ Shadow before we close it off with the AC/DC giving us the blues. Skream drops a pall over any semblance of contentment we once had with the dark and heavy Exothermic Reaction. Phaeleh doesn't lighten mood any choosing to keep the night dark with a little Caustic Storm. We switch gears for the second half of the show, this week with a little mini feature on mashups. It all starts with a youtube homebrew of Stevie Wonder meeting Metallica. After that mashup champion Z-Trip with an old school classic Rockstar followed up with a nod to the serious heads out there from the late 90s with Z mashing Christina Aguilera against ACDC. I used to love that shit back in the clubs. The show wouldn't be complete without a word from our man Strictly Kev and his epic hour long mashup mix Raiding The Twentieth Century. Beautiful slinky downtempo beats courtesy of Markus D start us off real nice like. The perfect song for daydreaming while looking up at the clouds follows with a happy little number by Youth Lagoon. We shift gears and go dark and heavy for the second half of the show with some downtempo drum and bass breaks delivered with wicked precision by Andy Stott. Byetone slices the bass like a freakin' chef after that bringing us the hyper edgy and intense Two Fingers (aka Amon Tobin) Razorback. We enter the new year with some dark atmosphere courtesy of Vancouver local Beesaur. After that we start getting groovy with a classic from the Orb and a wicked head nodder by Evan Marc and Steve Hillage. Orb collaborator Thomas Fehlmann shakes our booties and slams the beats from his live set at MUTEK a few years back before a new one by The Orb full of tripped-out dirty beats. It's the last show before the end of the world and so we're taking us out in style! We start off calling for a revolution with an old school ravey Little Fluffy Clouds remix and keep the beats rolling with Eat Static's tripped out Bony Incus. We throw some shuffle in our step with Daft Punk before we really get the hips bouncing with some funked out glitch bass from The Qemists. We end the set with some serious moodiness from HSS fav Tonikom and Loscil along with a little Tuvan throat singing for good measure. Second half of the show picks up where we started with a noisey Mogwai remix and a nice eastern flavoured Bjork remix before we head over to South Africa for some end of the world zef rave style with Die Antwoord. On November 8th, 2012 ambient master Pete Namlook died of unknown causes. This week on the show we take a look back and play some of our favourite Namlook songs. We start off slow and gentle with some delicate flute work from a collaboration between Laswell and Namlook off of Outland IV. Then we move in to a couple selections of Namlook's gentle vocal work with Ancient Beauty and Travelling Without Moving (an album title that pretty much sums up Namlook's ambient opus). We finish the show off with an absolute personal fav: the wonderfully restrained beats of Dark Side of The Moog IX.

Heavy beats and wobble ensue with ill.Gates & Datsik while Modeselektor really sets the tone by letting us know we need bass drum. Getting close to Hallows Eve here on the Howe Sound System. This week's show has some Halloween overtones with Kid Koala opening the show scratchin' up some familiar Charlie Brown. We get into the Good Time Girl groove with Cobra Killer, then Gin Wigmore carries us into Psychobilly territory with Kill Of The Night. Italy's Tying TIffany wrecks it up with Drownin' and the Bondage Fairies bring the 8 bit distorted goodness on their track Morphine. Crystal Castles take us a little closer to where we usually tread on the HSS with Untrust Us, and we hear a unique one from The Uncluded, which is a collaboration between Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson. The Butthole Surfers really bring the weirdness with Kuntz and the subs start to get a workout as the show heads dubsteppy. Loefah brings a remix of the Vex'd track 3rd Choice and we get a newish mix of Dark Steering from Squarepusher. Distance brings Menace and the show ends with one from Reso titled Check 1,2 that is so new it's still warm. We dedicate this week's show to airing the 2002 documentary The Fire This Time. The documentary arose as a result of Grant Wakefield's efforts with pioneering activist Miriam Ryle to publicise the devastating effect that the bombing of the 1991 Gulf War and subsequent sanctions were having on the civilian population of Iraq. From Grant Wakefield: "Faced with intransigence, ignorance and outright hostility from mainstream media, a planned visual documentary was abandoned in favour of an audio odyssey that took us from the heartbreaking hospitals of Baghdad to the depths of US foreign policy archives, from the stunning kindness of a UN official to some of the best musical talents of the UK electronica scene, all of whom contributed to the project for nothing, and donated their royalties to MEDICAL AID TO IRAQI CHILDREN. Garnering the kind of reviews one can only dream of, the album took over 3 years to make, half of which was spent fighting legal battles with music companies over rights, whilst 3000-5000 children died every month from malnutrition, dehydration and easily preventable disease in a political climate that, not just in retrospect, was completely and utterly insane, and ultimately totally pointless and counter-productive. Listen, and judge for yourself. The project is completed, and features original music by MICHAEL STEARNS, HIGHER INTELLIGENCE AGENCY, BASS COMMUNION with NASEER SHAMMA, SOMA, BARBED, KAIT GRAY, TOM MIDDLETON and BOLA, with exclusive re-mixes of ORBITAL and APHEX TWIN." http://www.grantwakefield.com/projects_fire_this_time.htm

The coals are hot by the time Pepe Deluxe and Z-trip & Radar hit the grill with their searing beats and heavy distorted rock riffs. Juices are flowing off the steak after The Slew and Z-Trip's classic rock mashup cook us just right. Then the Beasties let us know it's time to eat as their heavy beats finish off the party. We delve deep into the lush, bass heavy, echo-laden soundscapes of Deadbeat for the first half of this week's show. Inspired from his stellar show in town last week, we start off right with some lush ambience from Cell to set the mood. Deadbeat's harmonium flavours enter the scene with the stellar Fixed Elections as we begin to pick up steam. Mike Shannon's Under The Radar stokes the fires as the momentum builds with tripped out vocals and rumbling beats. Deadbeat drops heavy shuffle beats with Roots & Wire and we somehow segue into Wavespeech by Pete Lazonby (famously included on Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure 1 album). Beats driving us hard forward, we drop in Deadbeat's Grounation before the break. Minimal, dubby techno ensues for the rest of the hour with Stewart Walker and Laura Palmer laying it down. Montreal's Vromb catapults us into the warp speed until Ishq takes it down and chills us right out. We close with the sick beats of Kiln's Rust Dusk. The show starts out this week with something we don’t usually do here on the HSS. Riddims! Fantan Mojah, Michael Rose, 3gga & Emiliano all have their take on the Prisonbreak Riddim. We take it back a bit with some vintage roots reggae from The Prophets, featuring Vivian Jackson or perhaps better known as Yabby You. The show comes closer to the present with the slick production and dubby vibes of ex Roberts Creek native Bluetech and his track Dread Inna Babylon. Montreal and recent Berlin ex-pat Deadbeat brings his take on dub you can move it to, then Fever Ray and their excellent Tora Vinter Remix of Triangle Walks. Toronto’s darlings Austra bring a glitched remix of Spellwork and Portland Oregon’s Emancipator takes the show down a notch with a couple remixes including a nice blend of Sigur Ros and Mobb Deep. We sign off with the Minneapolis Minnesota hip-hop collective Doomtree bringing the emotion and a Little Mercy. A real journey through the genres this week. DJ Frane starts our trip with one from his Journey to The Planet of Birds, then Cut Chemist finds the groove and stays in the pocket with The Garden. Blockhead brings the Creepin' and it gets thick and heavy in Amon Tobin's Nepalese Bliss. We head to Sweden and take a turn upbeat with Lissi Dancefloor Disaster, Made In Heights has Viices then The Knife brings the darkwave goodness with a Silent Shout. Japan's DJ Krush starts to chill us out a bit, and Leksha brings us some fresh and clean IDM from Russia. The Higher Intelligence Agency takes us back to their first album with Spectral and Bluetech brings it back in a similar dubby groove with Seed To Soil.

This weeks show starts off with the steady beats and dubby bass of Tonikom. Amorphous Androgynous speeds it up with Auto Pimp and we get back into the groove with Laura Palmer and their excellent track Distances. Byetone glitches it up and Pinch takes us into some Underwater Dancehall. Version Big-Fi brings some Serious Dub while Northcape takes it down a notch with their beautiful Doesn't Feel Like A Long Way. Kiln keeps the lo-fi dub vibe going and Auditory Canvas brings the syncopated beats and heavy bass with their emotive track Burn. Modeselektor and The Orb finish this weeks' show off in their own stylish ways.

Beats and bass in effect this week. We start off right with the epic Uppsala from Lissi Dancefloor Disaster and then segue our way into the electronic folk domain with the likes of 2econd Class Citizen and The Amorphous Angrodynous. IDM gets its say with the lush and precise beats of edIT and a live recording of Telefon Tel Aviv. The bass gets heavy with a little Laswell until we really pick up the tempo and run the woofers through the subsonic side of things with (believe it or not) Skrillex followed by Pendulum's classic Tarantula. We close the show with the oh-so-sexy dirty bass of Modeselektor remixing Canada's own Ghislain Poirier. A strong start with a little brand new Santigold as we set course for solid beats all hour long. We bring it classic IDM style with Alphawezen and r.roo. Jonsi drops the beats but ups the emotion with voice and strings - a little post-rock action to end the first half hour. The journey continues with deep and heavy bass starting off all ambient techno-like with Spyra and Die Ashanti as we build our way towards the almost menacing, grinding bass of Horsepower Productions remixing Lee Perry. Afterwards TTC let's the squelching rip with Dans le Club and the mighty Modeselektor brings us to an emotionally charged ending with fat beats and the epic cascading synths of Let Your Love Grow. We start all space and psychedelic with a little live Ozric Tentacles before dropping some bass heavy tunes starting with Pretty Lights' heavy and incredibly wicked dubstep track "I Know The Truth". More chest rattling ensues with goodies from Santogold and edIT. From there we go into some hiphoppy breaks styles Pilote and the mighty 2econd Class Citizen (with a new album coming soon that's sure not to be slept on) as well as Yppah and a Beatles remix that puts Jay-Z to shame. The hour ends with some driving minimal techno from M.A.N.D.Y and Brinkmann dropping funk and 303 on our asses. We dig into our underground hiphop crates to pull out some nice selections of rich beats, vinyl techniques and rhymes this week. We kick it off with Birdy Nam Nam, the 2002 DMC World Champion turntablist quartet and their deep Abbesses composition. Doomtree drops some rhymes and picks up the energy with Z-Trip rockin' the party and taking us into the zone. More rhymes from Grieves and Atmosphere drops some sick production until we drop back a decade or so with Ming & FS doing their hiphop meets dnb thing. Some quality Canadian hiphop in there with Sixtoo and Canadian DMC champ DJ Brace showing us that hiphop is alive and well north of 49. The silky voice of Dessa brings us down followed by the for-some-reason-unknown sample guru DJ Frane with his cutup scratchin and funked out piano groove of A Story I Heard. It all starts with some nice esoteric IDM courtesy of French outfit Saycet. The vibe continues in the euro IDM vein skittering and pulsing along Emancipator and Mnemonic until we get to the more solid beats of Slouch. Spliffs begin to blaze as we settle into blunted beats and sleepy hiphop courtesy of some old school Nightmares On Wax and Montreal's own mega-talent Killa-Jewel, from her debut release. A detour through Philip Glass and then DJ Shadow drops one of his most powerful ambient tunes leading us into the jazz-inflected, slow motion vocals of Jimmy Scott singing an ode to Agent Cooper. Only listen to this week's show if you are ready to close your eyes and melt away to the lush rhapsody of eastern rhythms, electronics and sounds so delicate you think they're going to crack just listening to them. Soft and slow with a gentle bit of sax work over top a droning synth is how we start the show... a pace we continue all the way to the end. We gain a bit of momentum as Vat Von Trapp's voice sail over top of hand drums and drones. Juno Reactor's Song For Ancestors is the perfect accompaniment with it's deep electronics and Lisa Gerard-esque singing. Krishnamurti and Harold Budd take us deep into a introspective journey of our relationship to all of human history. A real journey this week as we kick off with a couple of Lee "Scratch" Perry versions of Bob Marley tunes, followed by some Yabby You grooves. Classic reggae all the way. The vibe amps up with Brian Eno & David Byrne's "Regiment" - off one of the first albums to heavily use samples as lead vocals. Is there anything Eno didn't pioneer? The assault continues with African Head Charge leading the way. Part two sees us taking the vibe down several notches as we enter the heady atmosphere of synths and soft flutes via Schpongle's "Flute Fruit".
