Understanding and honoring the creative self with Taryn Scali
Today, I brought back my best friend, Taryn, to talk about the creative self and how important it is to have an outlet in your life. Creativity has always been a big part of our relationship. Hustle culture is dead. Did our drive go away? Or did it morph into something new?
Today, I want to talk about ambition. Right now, I’m in the middle of my own reckoning with it. If you’re feeling the same way, then this episode is for you. We’re beginning to dismantle what ambition means and how it shows up. It’s not us that’s the problem but the environment. I don’t want to feel like I have to contort, trim, or lessen who I am to fit an idea the world presents to me. So I’m opting out. Demolishing ideas and beliefs to rebuild one brick at a time. My question becomes….does ambition have a place in my life if it’s not the hustle and grind way? How a mother of 4 kids started a successful business with Hayley Clark
Motherhood. Entrepreneurship. Often, women are unsure if they can do both. Or if they even want both. Growing up, I believed motherhood meant losing yourself. And becoming invisible to the world. Boy, was I wrong. With a little girl now of my own, my idea of what women are capable of expanded. That’s why I love this conversation with Hayley Clark, founder of Honey Mark. As a mama of 4 and successful business owner I had to talk to her about being a woman, mother, and dreamer.Having 3 kids in 2.5 years was a big challenge that later became a huge inspiration for Hayley's swimsuit collection. After years of designing and many miracles, Hayley launched her company, Honey Mark. As soon as Honey Mark launched, it caught like wildfire and has since helped tens of thousands of women find the perfect swimsuit that hits the sweet spot of cute and comfortable coverage. The journey in balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship was life-changing and she hopes to inspire moms out there to continue to be their authentic selves and pursue their dreams. Shifting from Podcast to Pause-cast
As Brene Brown calls it, we're switching to a pause-cast instead of a podcast. And focusing on bringing you a daily email to nurture you every morning. What that means is episodes will drop as we’re inspired. After taking a two-month pause in November and December I realized how inspired I felt giving space to thoughts and topics. How more insightful our content became when it could breathe.Right now our cadence forces us to work on strict deadlines and like our job is cranking things out. That’s not the energy we want to bring you at TGS. We want to be that space that nurtures you, that encourages you to give space to the spiritual and creative aspects of your soul, let your own musings and inspiration breathe.Creative, still energy is the most powerful there is. If there's only one email you sign up for this month sign up for ours now. Its purpose is to nurture and ground you every morning. You'll also get first access to new blog posts and episodes as they drop. Questioning your intuition? Here's how to know if it's talking to you
Intuition is top of mind for a lot of people right now. After two years of working, sleeping, and living in the same space, there's a craving for boundaries. Today, I answer a question from one of our listeners who said she questions everything in life including her ability to hear intuition. I hope my answers will plant seeds for you. TLDR: the more time you spend understanding and being with your creative and intuitive self, the more you’ll know when it’s speaking to you versus your intellect. Are you an adult child of emotionally immature parents?
What happens when a child has emotionally immature parents? How do you recognize it and heal yourself? This episode is inspired fully by Lindsay C. Gibson’s book Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. Understanding what an emotionally immature parent looks like gives you the power to judge for yourself the level of relationship you can have with them. Or anyone really. After this episode, you’ll have the ability to better create boundaries with ease and focus on living from a true, authentic space. Rather than spending tons of time and energy on a parent who won’t change.Jenica from The Good Space community messaged me after reading it saying she thought it would be a great topic to speak on. How to stop negative thoughts from consuming your day
In today’s episode, I want to talk specifically about negative thinking and a way to stop them from consuming your day. It involves a tool that fits within the CBT model and was created by therapist Laura Denke. It helps you manage the overwhelm and retrain the way your brain thinks.Download this free Negative Thoughts Worksheet for digital and printable versions of the exercise explained in this episode. You can also use a notebook and pen if that’s accessible to you. This is different from many tools we’ve taught in the past. Negative thoughts happen within. Other people can’t make you stop or start them or hear them unless you choose to share. Negative thoughts are consistently there. They guide the way someone views and acts in the world. Affirmations are great tools that help us think new thoughts. But they often don’t get to the root cause of negative thoughts. Listen to learn more about this tool. I hope it helps! One way to process and tolerate emotional pain and painful feelings
Today I want to share a breakthrough I had with processing intense emotional pain when normally I shut down. I hope that if you struggle with tolerating or processing emotional pain or painful feelings that it can give you something to try for yourself and maybe help you, too. What I'm about to share is the first time I caught myself at the beginning of that emotional spiral and cycle. I lovingly nurtured myself through it and allowed the moment to process and then leave my body. The goal wasn't to stop or resist the emotions. The point this time was to feel everything but guide it through in a healthy, loving, supportive way. New Age Spirituality: What to Know and How it Links to Conspiracy Theory with Jules Evans
Today, we’re chatting with Jules Evans about why New Age Spirituality tends to make people vulnerable to conspiracy thinking, which is a topic I discussed previously in episode 59. We discuss why that happens, the shadow side of spirituality, and how to stay grounded while still getting the benefits a spiritual life offers.Jules is the author of books such as Philosophy For Life And Other Dangerous Situations and The Art of Losing Control: A Philosopher's Search for Ecstatic Experience. He’s also an honorary research fellow at the Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London. He researches the history of ideas and how they can help us flourish today. His research has explored everything from the revival of Stoicism in modern life, to the cultural history of ecstatic experiences. We talk about…[2:20] What inspired Jules Evans' work[4:03] Jules' trauma and how stoicism also helped examine his beliefs[7:03] Jules' journey through various philosophies and religions[13:57] What is conspirituality?[23:23] The deinstitutionalization of spirituality and conspiracy thinking[28:40] Tendencies of the shadow side of our culture[32:38] Balancing the Socratic and ecstatic while looking at the flaws of beliefs[36:09] The power of love and kindness in spirituality[37:50] The best way to read Jules’ books[39:36] Jules' thought about spirituality moving forward QUOTES“The heart of spirituality and not knowing more than someone else, it’s just being kind. That’s the basics.” - Jules“Usually, we are unconscious and unaware of the beliefs and the opinions we hold and that’s why we get stuck in prisons so we can use all kinds of methods to examine our beliefs.” - Jules THIS WEEK’S INTENTIONI radiate with kindness no matter where I am or who I’m with. Conspirituality: Why spirituality and conspiracy are closer than you think
The term, conspirituality, entered my radar from a Los Angeles Times article about California’s yoga and wellness community having a QAnon problem which tripped my insatiable curiosity wire. Why would a community that represents connection, love, and acceptance adopt an ideology opposite to that? What’s the human behavior aspect behind that? I want to talk about conspirituality as a foundational whole, not about specific ideologies that grow from it per se, and am sharing what I found. 6 tips for coping with social anxiety post-covid
Today I want to talk about the social anxiety a lot of people may be feeling right now as the world starts to open up more. I compiled some tips for coping with social anxiety post-covid. After a year and a half of socializing with Netflix or virtually over Zoom it can feel like a shock to the system being in person again. It can also feel like there’s pressure to push ourselves into too much socialization. It’s important to acknowledge and accept the experiences and emotions that have resulted. For the last month, I’ve been working 40+ hours for a big copywriting client while also keeping up with the weekly podcast and emails. I’m not gonna lie that at times, I feel overloaded. If you’re feeling like this too where life can feel heavy and you’re not sure when you’ll come up for air please know you’re not alone. I’m not going to tell you to buckle up and press the gas pedal. Many of us have been conditioned to believe the only way to survive in the world is by adopting this fast-paced, constant doing mentality. What if I told you you’re more likely to succeed and thrive if you did nothing more? That allowing time for boredom holds more value than almost anything else you can do in the day. That is the permission slip I want to give you in this episode. Prioritize doing nothing and don’t feel like every second needs to be productive or active.RESOURCES AND LINKS:Deep Work* by Cal NewportFOR FULL SHOW NOTES: Click HereTHIS WEEK’S INTENTIONI embrace the being side of my spirit and give it the room and space it deserves in my life.THIS WEEK’S WRITING PROMPTWhat feels forced in my life? Heather is a certified coach for a premier virtual fitness and nutrition program and has a background in marketing. Whether that’s starting a new business, going back to school, or getting healthier. 5 Beliefs That Sabotage Your Ability To Trust Yourself
I’m going through a season of discovery and a few listeners in The Good Space community told me they are, too. After focusing hard on growth this last year, I started recognizing the conditioning and stories I’ve been sold about the life I’m “supposed” to live. How trusting yourself is more powerful than any expert’s opinion. I decided I needed to pause and let myself listen within for what’s right and remove any outside noise. This episode is meant to get you thinking more about what you’ve been conditioned to believe and what kind of life you would love if there were no limits, rules, or judgment. Just a blank slate with no knowledge of any limit. I also hope you leave inspired to learn to trust yourself more. 6 Ways to Overcome Resistance and Raise Your Energetic Vibration
Why do we struggle with resistance? It’s the number one thing that stops us from manifesting and living the unlived life within us. Look no further for the answer. I've researched and compiled info for this episode and will share what I found. Resistance not only affects our well-being on a physical and emotional level but on a creative one, too. It's a self-protection mechanism that activates when a change happens. Michelle Rees says that "resistance can feel like an internal struggle between two parts of ourselves." Tony Fahkry says, "Emotional resistance implies the avoidance of feelings and unconscious emotions hidden under the surface. It relates to facing the true nature of oneself." So what's a consistent way we can dissipate and work through resistance when we notice it's happening? Listen to hear a story that illustrates resistance and learn the 6 Rs of Working Through Resistance.RESOURCES AND LINKS:Books:The War of Art* by Steven PressfieldThe One Thing* by Gary KellerThe Big Leap* by Gay HendricksArticles:Affirmations for a Positive and Prosperous New YearHow to Live From a Place of Authentic PowerHow to Master Time Management Once and For AllFOR FULL SHOW NOTES: Click Here THIS WEEK’S INTENTIONI expand in abundance, success, and love every day, as I inspire those around me to do the same.DO THIS TODAYWhen you feel emotions like fear or irritability accept it without judgment, ask yourself, "What am I resisting right now?"THIS WEEK’S WRITING PROMPTWhat am I resisting in my life? 4 Myths About Creativity We Need To Debunk Right Now
What is a creative life? This episode will share four myths about creativity that may be stopping you from living a creative life. Elizabeth Gilbert says, “A creative life is an amplified life. It’s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life.” This may sound great but for many seems like a distant reality. Maybe even an impossibility. In The War of Art, Steven Pressfield says, “Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.” I’ll talk about this resistance and hopefully inspire you to pick up that pen, those ballet shoes, or whatever is your favorite way to be creative.RESOURCES AND LINKS:The Seat of the Soul* by Gary ZukavBig Magic* by Elizabeth GilbertThe War of Art* by Steven PressfieldIn case you missed it…Finding peace in an uncertain time with Kristina AranFOR FULL SHOW NOTES: Click Here THIS WEEK’S INTENTIONI embrace my creative energy daily and always have time to make things.DO THIS TODAYSchedule out a block of time where you show up to create.THIS WEEK’S WRITING PROMPTHow am I blocking creativity in my life? She was always fascinated with the study of the human mind and behavior. She pursued her studies in psychology and got a master's degree in mental health counseling from NYU. And it's an acquired skill, I think it's something that takes probably for some people a lifetime to acquire and to master you know, and it's also part of self-care, a huge part of it, because mental health is not just feelings, your emotions, and you know, your behavior, mental health, everything that you allow to affect you. - KristinaTHIS WEEK’S INTENTIONI intend to inhabit a feeling of peace at all times and allow it to radiate through every experience I have.RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:Sign up for our webinar: The 3 Secrets Behind Building An Intentional Life with Amanda TobeWords as Weapons* by Kristina AranThe Daily Stoic Book* by Ryan HolidayThe Startup Checklist: 25 Steps to a Scalable, High-Growth Business* by David S. Are You Being Honest With Yourself? with Emily Spang
This episode was originally supposed to be a solo one but after speaking with a few friends, I realized this question of honesty was being felt by the collective. So I brought my good friend Emily Spang on the show to get real and to dig into the question of “Am I being honest with myself?” We address resistance, stillness, and what happens when you finally identify your own truth. We talk about...[5:44] What is honesty?[12:09] truth and core values[17:02] Resistance vs Stillness[22:54] Listening to yourself and being silent[30:16] Reflecting and picturing your perfect day[32:57] Learning to be honest with yourself and others[39:26] Having faith in yourself and living with intention[45:00] What happens when you identify your own truth[51:29] The small things you can do nextGet our free daily emails hereQUOTES“One thing I started to realize is that as you’re going through life and you’re trying to figure out what you want... if you’re coming up with a lot of resistance…they are big signs from the universe that no, you probably shouldn’t go down that road.” - Emily Spang“Identify what is your actual truth because I think a lot of people take on other peoples’ truths and they are living this life and doing these things that are like, ‘Wait a second why am I doing this. How to Simplify Your Life with a Personal Compass with Amanda Tobe
We are in a new year and I am so excited to bring back Dr. Amanda Tobe. She took me through this wonderful exercise about finding your personal compass and now we want you to find this for yourselves as well. The number one question I’m asked is “How do I know what to focus on?”. Or “How can I simplify my life more and feel more peace?” In February, The Good Space is hosting an event with Dr. Amanda Tobe to help you create your own personal compass which will make clear what to say no to, what feels right to say yes to, and how to be truly intentional. She talks about...[5:32] What is a personal compass? Manifesting Stories We Love
Manifesting and the stories that go with it fascinate and inspire a lot of people. It’s the reason why it’s one of the most successful topics on The Good Space’s site. Listening to manifesting stories not only teaches us how the concept works in actual life but inspires us to feel hope for our own lives. In this episode, I’m sharing manifesting stories I’ve experienced, some from my team, and from listeners. A few will be read in the author’s own voices, instead of mine, which will be fun. How To Heal Emotional Pain And Find More Compassion
Today I want to talk about a method I’ve learned recently that’s helped me progress on the path towards spiritual freedom and emotional healing. Since most of us aren’t taught how to process emotions, we can find ourselves holding onto past experiences and getting them stuck in our bodies. How To Embrace Diversity And Include Others Better with Andraea Lavant
How To Embrace Diversity And Include Others Better with Andraea LavantIn conversations of spirituality, we often talk about manifesting and how we are 100% responsible for our outcomes. It’s also important, however, to call out the fact that not everyone is given the same resources or an equal opportunity to have the best outcome for their life. In order to be truly expansive in our spirituality, we must acknowledge and accept that there are differences within all of us, but that we’re all capable of openly inviting differences into our lives. She talks about…- Having a support system and also being a supportive friend. [8:11]- Allowing trust to guide you through uncomfortable conversations and situations. [10:35]- Broadening the scope by which diversity and inclusion are discussed. [16:56]- Including different voices and perspectives in all spaces and conversations. [19:42]- Openly inviting different people, experiences, and knowledge into your life. [23:23]- Using social media as a resource to expand your own space and explore other voices. [26:55]- Acknowledging people’s differences and giving them the space to speak for themselves. [30:39]- Being more proactive with inclusivity and being more accommodating to others. [40:19]QUOTES“Until it hits you close, we often don’t address it. So I think that is why the diversity narrative is so narrow.”“Different perspectives really make us better. If you think about the people that you’ve gotten to know that are different from you, and how that has expanded every aspect of who you are, and not only for you but for other people.”“I think it’s looking at who is already at your table and inviting more people. Inviting the people that look different.WEEKLY AFFIRMATIONI am open and accepting of my truest self and therefore am inclusive of every soul I meet. Why It’s Important To Show Up As Your Authentic Self with Kimberly Spencer
How did you see yourself before other people’s expectations influenced you? Who did you want to be? Whether it is because of external or internal pressures, we all have had curiosities that we never gave ourselves the permission to follow. In this episode, Kimberly Spencer guides us through how she learned to listen to her intuition and live to be true to herself. She talks about...- Finding her path and getting to where she is now. [4:14] - Balancing your feminine and masculine energies. [8:39]- Listening to your intuition and allowing your curiosities to guide you. [9:48]- Recognizing the “real you” and living truthfully. [11:42]- Remembering your earliest self and dreams. [14:04]- Releasing the shame and conditioned programming from your childhood. [23:20]- Creating a safe space where you can embrace your emotions. [27:57]- Accepting your mistakes and being proud of your authentic self. [32:53]- Rebuilding and realigning your relationship with trust and faith. [36:12]QUOTES“The foundation of manifestation is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances and imagining your world better than what your past conditioning has allowed you to have.” “Faith is imagining—imagining a greater world, a greater reality for yourself until it comes true and acting as if it is already coming true with the certainty that you are experiencing it now in the moment.” “It really is allowing and trusting your gut, and trusting that deep-seated knowing and remembering who you are and who you always have been.”“There is a way and a process of being able to feel and release negative emotions, and then allow them to reveal the lessons or the incongruences that need to be corrected to bring things back into alignment.” “I felt shame then for feeling my emotions, and what shame does is, shame loves secrets...Eventually, you put on enough shame, and it shrouds that genius that always was, and we accept it.” “That’s where shame lives. It’s in those spaces of those things that we did in our past that we are not proud of. When you have that acceptance, when you can accept the fact that that happened, whatever it was...how do you live on from that moment? What do you make that moment mean for you?” WEEKLY AFFIRMATION“I am giving myself permission to be authentic—no show, no manipulation. How to Master Time Management Once and For All
One of my favorite conversations to have with ambitious yet overwhelmed women is about the difference between time management and time ownership. Most people don’t realize that not knowing the difference is one of the biggest reasons they’re drowning in their life and work. It’s a simple yet powerful mindset shift that once made will change how you spend your time. The first step is realizing the difference between time managing and time owning, then wanting to become a person who owns their time by making that part of your identity, which then snowballs into doing the action necessary to match it.RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED:Download your free morning routine guide hereHave a question?
