Intentional Spending Ideas to Feel Fulfilled
Money doesn’t buy happiness. I firmly believe that. But, I also believe that money buys you options…and having the option is what breeds happiness. Having the option to take a trip, bless a family member, leave your job, start a family, and so much more. Money makes those things easier. Money allows you to have more and more options. Now, while I don’t think money buys happiness, I do think there are certain things you can spend your money on and feel genuinely fulfilled. In this episode, I’m sharing a few intentional spending ideas that will leave you feeling fulfilled and happy as a clam! Let me add that you may not be in a position to spend your money on these things now, but definitely keep them in your back pocket for the future. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:10] There are so many ways you can donate, and it doesn’t have to just be money. This can leave you feeling incredibly fulfilled. [04:20] The memories and experiences that come with traveling can stay with you forever, making the cost of the trip fulfilling. [07:20] The foods I consume directly impact my health. Because of this, I can’t get cheap with spending money on healthy foods. [11:43] Starting a business isn’t for everyone. However, if it’s something that you’ve wanted to do, it’s a great way to spend money in a fulfilling way. [13:59] When you’re in a position to help others, financially or not, it leaves you feeling empowered and fulfilled. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? How I Protect My Peace and Why It’s So Important
As I’ve gotten older, I realize there’s nothing more important than my peace…and protecting it at all costs. I used to spend time with people who thrived on gossip and drama, until I realized how much of my personal energy that time cost me. Now, I limit my time and interaction with people, places and things that drain my energy. I also set firm boundaries on protecting my mental wellbeing, and while it’s not always easy, it does get better over time. In this episode, I’m sharing the different ways I’ve come to learn to protect my peace and how it’s made a huge difference in my life. If you’re struggling to set boundaries, preserve your energy or protect your peace, hopefully some of my strategies and experiences can help you! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:34] Raya shares her experiences with specific people and the energy drain that took place because of being around those people. [06:00] Setting boundaries can lead to guilt. Raya shares how she checks herself when starting to feel guilty for protecting her peace. [11:31] Journaling has been a powerful practice to help set the tone for Raya’s day. She uses it to release feelings of stress, anxiety or excitement. [15:30] Raya spent a lot of time in nature when her mom was sick. This has now become a morning routine to promote serenity. [18:15] Leave other people’s problems and struggles at the door. Raya tries to avoid taking home the weight of other people’s problems. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Are you a fan of the City Girl Savings podcast? 5 Ways a Type A Personality Stays Organized
“Hi, I’m Raya and I’m a recovering structure addict”. Like most Type A individuals, I thrive on structure, organization, and time-specific tasks. Unfortunately, my need for structure got so bad that I started dreading quality time with friends and family. Thankfully, I’ve found ways to stay organized that suit my personality, but those ways are no longer at the expense of anyone or anything! In this episode, I’m sharing 5 ways a Type A personality (AKA Me) stays organized and sane. If you struggle with this, hopefully my tips and resources can help! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:02] There was a point in time where dinner out with her besties felt like a chore to Raya. She knew things had to change. [05:26] One of the great things about Asana is that you can color-code your tasks to help categorize everything that needs to get done. [08:25] Not only does OneNote help Raya identify her tasks for the day, but it includes the goals she’s working on, so they’re always front and center. [13:05] Raya batches tasks like recording podcast episodes and writing blog articles, to help her manage her time more effectively. [17:57] Learning how to say “yes” to things that are non-work related has helped Raya utilize her time for things outside of just work and business. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Christmas as a Money Coach: What I Give and Ask For
Happy Holidays! Have you ever wondered what a money coach gives and asks for Christmas? Well, you’ll learn today! While I love every holiday following the Fall season, Christmas holds a special place in my heart. Growing up, it was a time of the year that brought so much joy – not because of the gifts, but just the energy from that time of year. I would sit at home, alone, watching Christmas cartoons, just sitting next to the lit-up Christmas tree and would feel pure bliss. As an adult, I still feel bliss sitting next to the tree! In this episode, I’m sharing what Christmas is like as a money coach – the things I give and what I usually ask for. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:35] If you’re listening to the episode right when it airs, then Merry Christmas! Raya is wishing you a wonderful holiday season! [03:37] As Raya got older, she started putting more thought into the gifts she would give. The focus would be on things people needed or that reminded her of them. [06:03] There was a time, specifically college years, where Raya would constantly exceed her spending limit for Christmas, but mostly on buying herself material things. [09:04] A rule of thumb in Raya’s family for spending money on Christmas gifts is to stay within $100 per person for gifts. [11:33] Raya always asks for Starbucks gift cards for Christmas, because it’s money well spent and will help her stick to the budget during the start of the year. My Personal and Business Goals for 2024
You may remember I did an episode at the end of 2022, sharing my personal and business goals for 2023. I got such great feedback on that episode, that I decided to do another one sharing my 2024 goals!\ As you probably know, during the last quarter of every year, I like to sit down and set my personal and business goals for the next year. I usually reflect on the progress of my current goals and that lets me identify what I need to tweak for the new goals I plan to set. I don’t always reach every goal I set, and sometimes I exceed my goals. But what never stops is me setting or working towards goals. In this episode, I’m sharing my personal and business goals for 2024. I’m also giving you an update on my 2023 goals! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:31] Before sharing her goals for 2024, Raya breaks down the progress she’s made on her 2023 personal and business goals. [06:49] One goal Raya has for 2024 is to walk 10,000 steps per day Monday through Friday and to incorporate a high-fiber diet every weekday. [10:51] Although Raya’s auto loan interest rate is 0%, Raya has a personal goal of paying her car off before the 2024 year ends. [13:35] Following in last year’s footsteps. City Girl Savings has a goal of hitting 10,000 newsletter subscribers for the 2024 year. [16:00] 2023 was a heavy year for Raya. The focus for 2024 is to work hard but to not lose sight of her mental health along the way. 5 Signs You Shouldn't Be as Broke As You Are
While the statistics vary, it’s believed that 55 to 63 percent of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Plus, One-third of U.S. consumers say they aren’t currently saving any money and, of this group, 60 percent don’t have savings. This is a problem. Over half of our country is struggling to get by. Not to mention, if an emergency were to come up, the majority would be S.O.L! You may fall into these statistics, but should you? In this episode, I’m sharing five signs you shouldn’t be as broke as you are. If any of the signs apply to you, you’ll learn a few steps you can take to improve your situation. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:45] Raya kicks off the episode by answering a City Girl Solutions question asking her what she does for fun. [04:48] If you have to pick and choose which bills get paid each month, your focus should be on bringing in more money or cutting back any non-necessary spending. [09:04] Emergencies don’t happen on our timeline. They will typically pop up at the most inconvenient time, so having a savings account in place will help to ease the mental and financial burden. [13:59] You get to decide if you want to keep doing what you’re doing or if you want to change your behaviors. [19:04] If you live paycheck to paycheck but don’t have a budget plan – that’s a huge problem that needs to be fixed. Adversity Breeds Resilience: How I Handle Hard Times
Just 3 months before you’re listening to this episode, my sweet, kind, genuine mom, my last parent passed away. She had been terminally ill for years and it finally took her. 10 years before that, my dad was killed by a drunk driver at 4 in the afternoon on a road he’d driven on just about daily for 25 years. Those are two of the worst things that have ever happened to me. And unfortunately, there were a lot of hard things that happened in between. But you know what? I’m still standing. In this episode, I’m sharing why I 100% believe that adversity breeds resilience and how I have been able to get through some of the worst times of my life. My hope is that this episode encourages you to keep on keeping on, even through your worst times. Not every day is easy, but here are a few things that have helped me when going through my most challenging times: Walking to the sunrise every morning Daily Devotionals, especially on grief and challenging times Listening to meditations and higher-power messages (I really liked this one) Journaling my thoughts and feelings Letting those close to me know when I'm having sad days If you're going through hard times, I'm praying for courage to power through, wisdom to know there's something good on the other side, and grace to allow yourself to get through the best you can. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:20] We can choose to give in to the hard times, or we can choose to power through. Not everyday has to be perfect, but every day we get to choose. [05:35] You can triumph in tragedy. Raya shares how the passing of her father opened the door for City Girl Savings to become a reality. [09:27] Staying positive is SO much easier said than done. Second, I’m so glad I bit the bullet and decided to launch the podcast in January of 2022. I had been contemplating a podcast for a long time, but the timing never felt right. Financial Coach versus Financial Advisor with Grace Kilgore
Because the coaching industry is so new, it’s no surprise that most people assume they need a financial advisor, instead of a financial coach. I’ve been a financial coach since 2015 and many people have called me a financial advisor (which I’m not) and sought services outside of my wheelhouse. That’s why I’m so excited to have financial advisor Grace Kilgore on the show today. Grace and I are going to talk about the differences between a financial coach and a financial advisor, so whoever’s listening can understand the difference and seek out the right financial support. When you’re looking to establish your financial foundation – create a budget, pay off debt, build an emergency fund and improve your money mindset, a financial coach is what you need. When you have a solid financial foundation and you’re ready to build wealth – through investment vehicles like the stock market, life insurance and more, you’re ready to work with a financial advisor. My goal as a finance coach is to get my clients established and ready to work with a financial advisor. They have laid the foundation for financial consistency and now they’re ready to capitalize. In addition to educating listeners on the differences of financial coaching versus advising, Grace shares what it’s like to work as a woman in the male-dominated finance industry, what qualifiers she looks for before taking on new clients, and how she manages work, family and home life. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:31] Grace shares her background and the interesting story of how she got into the financial advising space, unexpectedly. [11:43] “I don’t feel like I have to compete with my male counterparts”. The financial services industry is male dominated. Grace shares her experiences as a woman working her way up in the industry. [23:21] When someone is ready to work with a financial advisor, like Grace, she can help them avoid mistakes that could jeopardize their wealth-building efforts. [33:10] The verdict is in – Raya and Grace both agree that paying down high-interest debt should be a top priority, even above investing in the stock market. [43:37] Grace shares the time management tricks that work for her. She works better in small chunks of time when getting tasks done. [49:07] Fill your feed with financial encouragement to help make finances a priority in your life. 9 Frugal Habits to Implement Now
Money management is one of the most important skills a person (especially a woman) can have, but it’s often never learned and properly utilized. It’s not easy to live a life of frugality – to assess needs versus wants and avoid spending money on things that you don’t need. However, it’s mandatory if you want to live a life of financial security and freedom. If you aren’t a frugal person by nature, don’t worry! I wasn’t either in the beginning. But, if I can change my ways, anyone can! In this episode, I’m sharing 9 frugal habits that anyone can start implementing now to work towards proper money management. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:38] In this episode, I’m answering a City Girl Solutions question about the advice I would give to the version of myself 10 years ago. [05:01] Make it a habit of “paying yourself first”. Meaning, when money comes in, you save something before you do any spending. [07:41] When you keep tabs on your spending, you can make changes real-time to help you save money or get back on track. [13:25] Planning ahead for things you know are coming (or what to come) can be a great way to stick to your budget and avoid overspending. Easy Ways to Live Within Your Means
A common trend in the personal finance community is the notion of living below your means. Meaning, you’re able to live on less than what you make. Before we can master living within or under our means, we need to know how to stop living above our means. In this episode, I’m sharing some simple ways you can live within your means and still enjoy a life you love. Be prepared to take some mental notes and feel free to start implementing immediately! 35 Money Lessons I Learned by 35
By the time you’re hearing this episode, I’m a newly aged 35-year-old woman. My year from 34 to 35 has been one of tremendous growth. Not from a business or material standpoint, but from an internal one. It’s been a year of reflection, trusting the unknown, and having faith. It was a tough year personally and I was forced to do things I didn’t plan to. I was forced to slow down when I didn’t want to. I was forced to be content, which is something I struggled with. The growth I’ve experienced in the past year has had a huge impact on the money lessons I’ve accumulated over my 35 years of life. In this episode, I’m sharing some of the biggest money lessons I learned by 35. I have a feeling the lessons will keep coming! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:55] On this City Girl Solutions’ segment, I’m sharing whether to set up bill-pay through your bank or automatic payments through each company. [07:43] Money isn’t what brings happiness, but it can allow you to do and purchase the things that do bring you overall happiness. [12:15] Contributing to a 401k plan at age 21 was the best thing I did for my finances. I didn’t do a lot of things right back then, but I did that right! [17:09] Love to travel? It’s okay to visit the same place multiple times, especially if that place brings you joy. [21:05] I no longer believe starting a business is for everyone. Home Buying 101 with Realtor Coco Massara
One of the most common goals I see across the City Girl Savings community is home ownership. People reach out to me sharing they want to own a home one day. Clients and I work to prioritize saving for a down payment. Dreams of passive income from rentals or AirBnBs fill people with hope. Whether home ownership is in the near future for you or not, there are things everyone can do right now to put themselves in a position to purchase when they’re ready. In this episode, I’m talking with Austin-Texas based realtor Coco Massara about all things home ownership, rental properties and more! Get ready to learn what home buying is all about! Here's a glance at this episode: [03:25] Coco takes listeners through her experiences purchasing a home as a single, woman of color before getting into the real estate industry. [09:20] Coco and her husband purchased a second property in New Mexico. She shares what that process was like and the questions she asked before purchasing in a different state. [24:24] Applying for a loan is like applying for a credit card – you may be approved for more than you’re comfortable spending. This means a budget is critical. Mindset Matters: Abundance versus Scarcity
When it comes to your finances, it (literally) pays to have the right mindset. How you think about your money determines how you act with your money. How you think about your situation determines how you change (or don’t change) your situation. In this episode, I’m diving into why mindset is so important for your life and finances. I’m also going to break down money scarcity, so you can spot the signs of that particular mindset and work to change it! Here's a glance at this episode: [01:49] Raya shares the dictionary definition of “mindset”, so you can truly understand what it means. [03:41] If you’re not aware of your mindset, you may be doing things that are not helping you reach your goals long-term. [07:02] Unfortunately, the more you think something bad will happen, the higher the likelihood you believe something bad will happen and make it true. [10:52] Do you have true money scarcity, or do you just believe your money is scarce? There’s a big difference. Why You Need to Pay to Get Better with Money
Why should I pay to get help with my finances when there are plenty of free or low-cost options available? Since I’m a coach that specializes in helping people who don’t know how to budget, you can imagine how many times I’ve been asked this question. And it’s perfectly valid. The funny thing is, the people who are asking that question, aren’t asking questions like: why should I save so I don’t live paycheck to paycheck? Why should I control my spending so I can pay my bills? Those are valid questions too! The reason why people need to pay for help in areas they haven’t been successful in (finances included), is because they haven’t been able to figure it out themselves up until this point. That’s not to say that no one can figure it out themselves. I sure did, as far as my finances go…But, it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t overnight. It would have happened a lot faster with the right guide. In this episode, I’m sharing why you need to invest in your financial success, and why it’s perfectly okay to spend money to get better with it. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:22] In this City Girl Solutions segment, I’m sharing some ideas for budget-friendly wedding planning. [04:35] If you’ve never invested in any type of coach or trainer, it can probably be hard to wrap your head around spending money to get better with something that you can learn on your own. [10:23] You can spend a lot of time researching and learning what you can do to improve your finances. The research may not cost money. However, you’re giving up your time at the expense of not spending money. [14:00] Nothing happens overnight – whether you work with a coach or not. You have to be consistent and put in the work to see the results. [18:09] Paying down your debt balances is a big part of building wealth. With the right plan, you can see progress in this area. Ah, summertime. Beach days. Long nights. Sun rays. Maybe it was the fact that summer vacation when we were little was a great time, but even as an adult, I always look forward to summer. Mid Year Personal and Business Goals Check In
When it comes to your goals, you can’t just set them and forget them. You have to check in on them and make sure you’re on track. If you’re not on track, you still have time to course correct and figure other things out. Sometimes, things come up and your goals can’t be achieved exactly when you want them to. That doesn’t mean you should give up though! It just means you’ll need to tweak, adjust and get back to work. The same goes for me! You may remember at the end of 2022, I shared my personal and business goals for 2023. Well, here we are, over 7 months into the year and I practice what I preach. In this episode, I’m doing a mid-year personal and business goals check in. I’m sharing my check in results with you, so you can do your own mid-year goal check in! Here's a glance at this episode: [01:44] In this episode’s City Girl Solutions question, I’m breaking down “Backdoor” Roth IRAs for those who may not be aware of what they are and how to implement them. [04:35] One personal goal that I’m on track with for the year is working out Monday through Friday. I’ve also added in walking 10,000 steps to it! [09:45] We have a business goal of hitting 50,000 podcast downloads in 2023. Thank you for listening and helping us reach this goal! [13:00] We’re off target for reaching out annual website views goal, but with a newly-designed website, hopefully we can make up for lost time. Manifesting Money, Trips and More with CGS Client Tymika
I can’t quite explain it, but every time a new client joins my coaching program and vows to truly change their money situation, God, the Universe, or whatever else you believe in throws things their way to confirm they’re on the right track. Extra money miraculously appears. Bills come back with credits. Checks show up in the mail. Family members send blessings. This isn’t an anomaly to just one or two clients, it happens to just about all of them who truly decide to improve their finances. Tymika is no different. Tymika is a money coaching client of mine who started working with me in 2021 and has continued with ongoing support. I’ve seen amazing shifts in Tymika’s mindset and it’s translated to her manifesting amazing things, back to back. In this episode, I’m talking with Tymika about her experience with manifestation and how she’s now a true believer. Here's a glance at this episode: [05:20] Tymika’s money situation always seemed to hit a certain level. She couldn’t move past it and tended to spend her money in line with that level. [09:49] Unbeknownst to her, Tymika was never talking positively about her finances. It wasn’t until her boyfriend (BF) brought her negative mindset to light that it clicked. [18:21] Instantly after starting coaching, Tymika learned instantly that she truly did have enough money coming in. [30:15] Tymika breaks down all the different ways more money has come into her life through manifestation and mindset. [40:00] Working with a money coach has given Tymika courage in other areas of her life. 8 Things Everyone Should Be Saving For
Everyone knows they should be saving money, but most people don’t take it a step further and specify what that savings should be for. I’ve worked with clients who would save money consistently, but never had a strategy around that savings. There are certain things everyone should be saving for, but it’s not always clear what those things should be. Don’t get me wrong, saving money just to save money is better than the alternative – not saving money at all, but when you don’t have a purpose for your savings, it can be easy to spend it on things you don’t necessarily need. If you’re unsure about what to save for, in this episode, I’m sharing 8 things everyone should be saving for over time. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:47] In this episode’s City Girl Solutions question, I’m sharing what I think about Dave Ramsey and his teachings. [04:00] Believing that you are capable of achieving the things you want out of life is a huge part of actually achieving them. [08:45] Stop what you’re doing and go contribute to a retirement plan – through your employer (if available) or through an IRA (if your employer doesn’t have a plan). [13:09] A dream vacation is worth saving for. While other priorities may come first, don’t rob yourself of an amazing travel experience. [17:00] One thing that we all should be working towards is a life free of debt. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:50] In this episode’s City Girl Solutions question, I’m sharing the books I recently read and the one I’m currently reading. [04:14] Unexpected events happen to us all. Having something in savings to help cover the costs of these events makes a world of difference. [06:10] If you are consistently saving money but often have to touch that savings, you’re likely saving too much money for your situation. [09:50] Trying to make cash only spending work? Setting the Record Straight on Sinking Funds
I’m sure you’ve heard the term “sinking funds” before, and if you haven’t, you’ll definitely learn today! Sinking funds are individual saving strategies for specific goals. Whether you’re saving for that goal in a bank account, investment account or a cash envelope, you’re contributing to that goal’s sinking fund. Sinking funds can be a great way to save for goals, save for expenses that tend to pop up on you unexpectedly, or save for things (big or small) that you want to have money for in the future. In this episode, I’m helping you get clear on leveraging sinking funds, which sinking funds you should have and how to budget for them. Get ready to feel like a sinking fund pro! Here's a glance at this episode: [01:30] According to a CNBC study, Americans save less than 5% of their disposable income – the income that’s left over after all their bills and responsibilities are covered. [03:59] Want to save for your sinking funds in cash? The envelope system is the best way to go. [08:56] I’m saving for a second home in Palm Springs in an investment account. I’m breaking down why I chose this type of account. [11:20] Determining your sinking funds? I often ask my clients what expenses come up regularly that can be saved for in advance? [15:23] Getting into a groove with sinking funds will take some trial and error. Give yourself grace and don’t give up! Breaking Down My Savings Accounts and Strategies
I’ve been budgeting and saving for many years. With that comes picking up on tips and tricks, and learning what strategies work and don’t work. I’m a firm believer in the notion of one savings account per goal. Not only does this keep you organized, but it also keeps you on top of how close you are to reaching that goal. I currently have 7 primary savings accounts. Each of them has a specific purpose and a specific strategy behind them. In today’s episode, I’m breaking those accounts and strategies down. I’m doing this to inspire you to get strategic with your own savings accounts. I also want you to get an idea of how I think about saving – in the hopes that you’ll take what works for you and thrive! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:10] Before taking City Girl Savings full-time, I had a goal of saving 15 months’ worth of expenses. [04:10] I keep my emergency fund in a high-yield savings for a few reasons: extra interest, liquid cash and not easy to instantly transfer. [08:50] I never keep more than a few thousand dollars in my travel savings. Because of this, I keep this account close to my checking for easy access when booking. [14:32] Any savings account of mine that’s linked to my checking has a specific purpose. I don’t touch those accounts unless they’re needed to fulfill their purpose. [19:05] I use Betterment for my long-term investment accounts. It’s user-friendly and I love their “goal forecaster.” Subscribe, Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts This helps me support more people — just like you — to make the best money moves as they make their way to their dream life. Whatever area (or areas) of your life you’re unhappy with, it’s time to do something about it. Stop putting off improving your situation because time is of the essence. The longer you prolong the work, the longer you prolong the success. In this episode, I’m sharing 5 reasons to stop putting off improving your situation and life, so you can get to work immediately on changing things for the better. YOU have the ability to change your situation for the better. [03:20] You don’t have to change your entire life in one day, but doing one thing each day to get you closer to your goals is completely doable. [05:28] When it comes to changing your situation, the hardest part is usually the beginning. Just remember this too shall pass. [09:50] Waiting on outside factors to help change your situation? My Favorite Affirmations for Money, Happiness and More
I started using affirmations in 2018 after I made the decision that I wanted to run City Girl Savings full-time. When I tell you there is a night and day difference between how I thought then and how I think now, affirmations are what took me to the next level. The thing about affirmations is that they aren’t just words you say out loud. They are beliefs you want to be true about yourself or your situation. The more you say them, the more you affirm them. The more you affirm them, the more you believe them. When you start believing in them, you start living them. Then, the magic happens! This episode is going to be a little different – one by one, I’m going to share my favorite affirmations for money, success, happiness and more. I’m going to start with the oldest to newest, so you can see the progression. Feel free to take any of these affirmations and make them you own! Here's a glance at this episode: [01:54] I started using affirmations in 2018 when I knew I wanted to run City Girl Savings full-time. I had never used them prior to. [04:30] “I’m fully capable of the desires inside me.” [06:48] “I am the kind of person who never stops learning, growing and practicing gratitude.” [08:14] “I live a healthy, happy, active lifestyle.” [11:05] When you use affirmations, you start doing things in line with what you’re trying to achieve. 7 Ways to Invest in Your Personal Success
Tony Robbins once said, “if you’re not growing, you’re dying”. What he means is that if you are not working to improve your life, in any area, you’re staying still. When the mind settles for what is, nothing more comes. That doesn’t sound good to me. What about you? We must continue learning to continue growing. There are so many ways to do that, but it all starts with investing in your personal success. You must invest in things that will take your life to the next level. Let’s get more specific. You should invest in things that will take your career, finances, relationships, health, mind, body, and soul to the next level. You don’t have to work on all areas at once, but you do need to work on something. In this episode, I’m sharing 7 ideas you can leverage to invest in your personal growth and success. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:20] Are you trying to improve in a specific area of your life? Consider working with a coach! There are coaches available to help with just-about everything. [04:00] Spending time by yourself, ideally in a different place or environment, can be a great way to get to know yourself and identify what success looks like for you. [05:55] Thinking of going back to school? It can be a great way to invest in your success, just make sure the topic is something you can grow in over time. [08:30] Starting a business is a great way to invest in your own success. You also learn how resourceful you can be. [11:35] Group accountability programs can be an alternative to 1-on-1 coaching and still get you the benefit of learning and working towards your goals. My Budget Non-Negotiables
I’ve preached the importance of budgeting for a long time. Let me just state for the record that I will continue to preach the importance of budgeting for as long as I’m able to! Budgeting changed my life for the better and now I’m helping other people use budgeting to change their own lives. Unfortunately, there’s still a misconception that life on a budget means a person can’t enjoy life. Not true! A budget should include the things a person enjoys, in moderation of course! In this episode, I’m sharing my current budget non-negotiables and why they matter to me. I’m also going to share a few things I want to become budget non-negotiables, but they haven’t made their way into my budget just yet. I encourage you to get clear on your own budget non-negotiables and work to make sure they’re factored into your budget. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:30] In this week’s City Girl Solutions Q&A, Raya explains high-yield savings accounts and why they are game-changers for anyone trying to save money. [04:45] While some of my budget non-negotiables aren’t technically discretionary, I choose to spend money on these specific things to improve my quality of life. [08:50] Next, I cover the budget non-negotiables that are truly discretionary. They are things I don’t need, but absolutely love to have. [12:20] Finally, I spend time talking about things that I would like to become budget non-negotiables but I’m not quite there yet. Things You Can Do to Improve Your Financial Literacy
Did you know April is Financial Literacy Month? While I think financial literacy should be a focus each and every month, it’s nice to know the need for financial education is being acknowledged. What steps are you taking to become more financially literate? I don’t know about you, but had I been financially literate earlier in life, maybe I wouldn’t have struggled so much with debt and overspending. Had my parents been more financially literate, maybe they could have actually taught me how to save and manage what I had. We can’t change the past, but we can decide how we want to move forward. In this episode, I’m sharing some things you can do to improve your financial literacy and take more control of your financial situation. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:42] In the latest City Girl Solutions Q&A, Raya explains high-yield savings accounts and why they are game-changers for anyone trying to save money. [04:25] Did you know City Girl Savings has an online course to help women master the money they make? [07:18] Money coaches are not one-size-fits-all. Raya shares the different ways people can work with a money coach. Why Your Happiness Should Be First Priority
I see it all the time – whether it’s my clients, my friends or myself, we’re constantly putting other people’s needs and feelings above our own. While both men and women do this, it’s especially prominent in women. We make sure everyone else is okay, leaving our own happiness on the backburner. At the end of the day, I firmly believe that our own individual happiness should be a top priority. This will make it so much easier to help other people we care about. In this episode, I’m sharing why your happiness should be first priority and how to make sure you’re putting yourself first without making other people feel neglected. There are things we can all do to make sure we prioritize our own happiness. And remember, it’s so much harder to fill someone else’s cup when your own cup is empty. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:25] If we can’t love ourselves and prioritize our own happiness, how can we expect others to? [04:24] A common misconception about prioritizing your happiness means that you’re selfish. This is not the case, but communication can make all the difference. [09:15] Doing things that make you happy helps in so many ways, just make sure these things are included in your budget. [12:00] Share with friends and family that you’re prioritizing yourself. Your happiness should also mean something to them. My Debt-Free Story and the Biggest Takeaways Along the Way
Did you know millennials carry an average credit card debt amount of about $4,600? I’m proud to say that I’m credit card debt-free, but that wasn’t always the case. Today, I’m sharing some of my biggest takeaways from the experience. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:10] Credit limit increases can be dangerous territory as they give you a false sense of security that can lead to more spending. [04:31] Learn from my mistake…making minimum payments and continuing to use credit cards, combined with interest fees, can quickly take you over the credit limit. [06:52] If you’re not careful with your credit card usage, it can take minutes to overspend and accumulate debt, and then take years for you to get out of the debt payoff cycle. [08:49] If you do not get to the root cause of your overspending, you will end up back in debt. The Power of Visualization to Help You Reach Your Goals
A few years ago, I took the Strengths Finder test to have a better understanding of myself. One of my top strengths is “Futuristic”. This means I’m inspired by the future and what could be, essentially visualization. Visualization is your ability to imagine things and see it in your mind. It doesn’t necessarily tell you HOW to get to what you’re visualizing, but it does open your mind to what’s possible. Once you see it, you can believe it. Once you believe it, you can achieve it! Big City Spender to City Girl Saver: How City Girl Savings Came to Be
Welcome to The City Girl Savings Podcast, a weekly discussion focused on the intersection of money and the city girl lifestyle! On the podcast I'll be sharing my experiences, advice and guidance on navigating life and money as a city-loving millennial trying to build wealth and enjoy life at the same time! Like most people, I didn’t learn about money and finance until I experienced it for myself. It’s not like they teach this stuff in school! You may or may not know this, but I've been running City Girl Savings since 2015.That's a LONG time...but before that, I was taking a completely different path with my money. After my financial (and personal) life took a 360, I realized that if someone like me... Who enjoys nice things... Who loves to travel... Who would go out to eat everyday if she could... Could turn my life around with budgeting, and still feel like I can enjoy myself in moderation, I could help other women do the same. So, I put all of my knowledge and experience into processes and systems...and here we are today! That's EXACTLY how City Girl Savings came to be. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:00] I didn’t start out as a savvy budget coach! I was terrible with money in my early adult years. [07:11] The driving force behind leaving Austin to pursue life in Los Angeles, and how that transition was made possible. [19:23] My financial rock bottom – the turning point in my financial life and what happened to finally help me get my act together.
