Transcript:
Chuck Solomon: Hey, Martha. How are you this afternoon? Good. Chuck. How are you? I'm doing well. Could you please tell listeners a little bit about Martha, the company you work for and your current role?
Martha Angle: Sure. I'd love to. First again, thank you for, for having me on. My name is Martha Angle. I am the VP of talent management and inclusion.
I have one stream software. I've been with OneStream almost nine years now and seeing this startup really kind of grow from a scrappy startup into now an accelerated growth company. So we've grown from when I started about 30 employees to now north of 1300. So the growth has been pretty cool over the years, almost a decade.
And I've got a lot of stories to tell depending on how much time you got. But yeah, this has definitely been home for me for a very long time. Yeah. And personally I'm a mom, I have a 10 year old and a 12 year old, two awesome kids at home. And yeah, I'm excited to, to share a little bit about what my experience has been.
Chuck Solomon: Well, I appreciate it. We're, I'm actually not even sure where you live, where do you live, where are you calling
Martha Angle: in from today? I'm in Birmingham, Michigan, actually. So that's where OneStream’s headquarters is. That's where I'm calling in from today. So
Chuck Solomon: tell me, how did you get into this talent
Martha Angle: space? So I got started in human resources in general right out of college.
So my, my degree was in English and philosophy and bringing those sort of two things together, I was able to, to talk a little bit about the employee experience and, and help in making decisions and, and writing, you know, strong communications. And so that's where I started actually with what was OneStream's predecessor, Upstream.

So I want to hear about what you're seeing and then the problems as such, but I wanted you both to share a bit about your founder story because I think it's, pretty interesting.
Kyle Connors: Well, first off, we're we always like to introduce ourselves as we're co founders, but we're also brothers.
So. We you know, we've known each other basically our entire lives. I come from a, a technical background. So I come from being VP of engineering, VP of products, cto. And a big part of my career has always been building out engineering teams, trying to, you know, find the best you know, engineers and product managers and designers to work at whatever company I was at and.
You know, it was always such a, struggle to compete against, , big tech and top tech out there, right? You really had to find whatever, , possible kind of edge you could. And really uncovered over my career is just how important Candidate experience was , with attracting and winning over top talent.

Chuck Solomon: Hi Rhona, how are you today?
Rhona Barnett-Pierce: I'm good Chuck. How are you?
Chuck Solomon: Very good, thank you. Can you tell listeners a little bit about yourself and your current role at your company?
Rhona Barnett-Pierce: Sure. So first of all, thank you so much for having me candidate. Absolutely. Candidate experience is really one of my favorite things to chat about.
I'm Rhona Pierce, like you said. I'm a former software engineer and project manager turned talent acquisition leader. I've been in TA full-time, officially since 2017. Mm-hmm. Unofficially long before that. Sure. I'm current, I'm currently the director of recruiting operations at Leaf Group, which means that I oversee the.
Full recruiting process at leaf, everything from candidate experience, employer branding, sourcing all, all of the fun stuff. Sure. Many people haven't heard about Leaf Group. Leaf Group is a portfolio of media and e-commerce brands. Sure. Mostly in the lifestyle category. Some of our most notable brands are live Strong, well and good society, six Sachi Art.
Most of the roles that we hire for are editorial marketing, software engineering, basically any role that you would imagine is needed to support a media or e-commerce
company. Gotcha. So media company, not an arborist. Yes,
exactly.
Chuck Solomon: Gotcha. What got you started in this talent acquisition space?
Rhona Barnett-Pierce: I love this question because the answer is definitely not.
This is what I always dreamt of doing and went to school for. Yeah. Like most of the TA professionals that I know, I literally fell into ta. I was trying to solve the problem, the hiring problem we were having. Mm-hmm. At one of the companies I was working at at the time, I was an operations manager.

Chuck Solomon: Hey Haley, how are you today?
Haley Sasser: I'm great. How are you?
Chuck Solomon: I'm doing well. I wanted to thank you for, this is your second time. You're a two timer here on the Candidate Experience Podcast. We recorded back in November of 2021, so like a year and a half ago, and I will. Definitely put the notes or the link in the notes to this episode to your previous one, which I thought was great.
I think you had some great things to share. I especially like the fact that you, you talked about. What you could do for the candidate experience in a small, medium, and large. It's like ordering off a menu, right? Yeah. Small, medium, or large. Mm-hmm. So I would encourage listeners to, to go back and listen to that.
Cause I think what you said then still applies to today. [00:01:00] But before we get, yeah, sure. Yeah. Before we get rolling, can you please introduce yourself to listeners?
Haley Sasser: Yes, so my name is Haley Sasser. I live in Tampa, Florida, and I have almost nine years of experience in the employer brand and recruitment marketing space.
And most recently, the past two years in internal communications and, you know, employee engagement. And so some of the things I've done and have. Really passionate about are, you know, e V P development careers, websites, and revamping those and really enabling talent acquisition teams with recruitment marketing content, and Email templates that align with, with the brand and with the voice of the company, and of course reputation management as well.

Chuck Solomon: Hi Lauren. How are you today? I'm good, Chuck. How are you? I'm doing well. Could you please let listeners know a little bit about yourself, your company, and, and your role?
Lauren Ahrens: Yeah, for sure. So I'm Lauren. I lead global recruiting for a company called H1. We're a Series C startup focused on global healthcare data.
Lauren Ahrens: We actually have a software platform that speeds decision making and insights for users in life sciences and pharmaceutical industries and so forth. And I've been in recruiting for the last 10 plus years, focused mostly on building data and technology enabled recruiting teams and building great candidate experiences.
Chuck Solomon: Awesome. What got you started in working in this talent space?
Lauren Ahrens: Yeah. Honestly, I really recognized it was, it's interesting, it was actually 2008 when mm-hmm. You know, the, the first sort of first real economic crisis I had right. Of my own personal career. Right. And I was working for a financial services startup at the time.
Lauren Ahrens: And what I noticed is that there were a lot of very unseasoned managers who really struggled to sort of keep a lid on their stress and noticed how it influenced their team somewhat negatively. And I sort of became very kind of hyper aware of how hiring decisions impacted the culture of a company.
Lauren Ahrens: Sure. Super important to me. Not just the candidate experience, but also how it leads into the employee experience. And I wanted a hand in helping shape that.
Chuck Solomon: That's great. I asked that same question of all my guests and I, it is the same question, but I get really unique answers. I think not, not once have I had someone say, well, I was in high school and my guidance counselor said, you should be a recruiter.
Lauren Ahrens: A recruiter. I went to college and got a degree in recruiting. Said no recruiting leader ever.

Dustin Laycock Hey. Doing great. Doing great. How are you?
Chuck Solomon I'm well. Can you let our listeners know a little bit about yourself and your current role and a little bit about the company you work for?
Dustin Laycock Yeah. First off, thanks for. Thanks for having me. Sure. This is definitely something I'm really passionate about and I love talking about. So I was happy to jump at this opportunity. Yeah. So my name is Dustin Laycock. I have been an accidental recruiter for going on 14 years now. I currently work for a company called Zillow. Zillow is really more of a more of a scale up and a startup. I mean, we've been around ten years, so I feel like we're kind of further along on that maturity curve, but we're still smaller. We're about 55 people today, and what we do is that we enable front line workers or desk workers through communication solutions such as Push-to-talk. So we're really big on helping out of all types of industries. We're not industry specific. One cool thing that we do do is we offer our platform for free to first responders. And in fact, last year I think we gave out something around $3.2 million worth of free licenses to first responders. So. Before this. Chuck Solomon Yeah. That's awesome though, that you're that you're doing that. I mean, anything that supports first responders is is really good in my book.

Sure. Well, thanks for having me first. My name is Kaitlyn, I run the talent function at TOMO, which is a fin tech startup. It's about two and a half years old. But prior to working in the startup world, I had a really fun career in fashion and in finance before that. So I've been on the HR recruitment side and many different industries, but have always found myself within the recruitment space. That's where my heart is.
Chuck Solomon
Gotcha. I totally understand. How did you know how did you get into this? Talent? People attraction space?
Kaitlyn Tarpey Borea
It's such a good question, because I feel that so many people say they fall into it. For me, I was I am the daughter of an accountant and a math teacher. And so I knew from a very early age that I did not want to work with numbers. I wanted to work with people. And so I knew at least that much going through undergrad. And really, when I think about what recruitment is, it's matchmaking but it's also being an ambassador for a company for a brand for an organization that, that you're passionate about. And I've had some good practice, in situations like that I grew up in the pageant circuit. And you know, it's very natural to me to connect people, and to guide people to into whatever it is that their heart's calling them for. So there's a little bit of I knew I wanted to do with people versus numbers. And then just sort of a circumstance where I fell into an assignment, I ended up being successful in that assignment. And then my career really took off after that.

No, I know, I definitely didn't. However, it did. Pull from my background. Because, again, to me, recruitment is about relationship building, customer service, and, you know, being from the islands, you know, that's something that is important, because tourism is the main part of my community. So I wanted to go originally go into hospitality manage to meet the same thing. But it's just the flip side of it. So I realized my passion, and my personality, you know, identify was live, at least I hope so.
