312 – Navigating Dementia Care as an SLP: Tips and Insights from a Dementia Consultant
Have you ever wondered how much you can actually do as an SLP when it comes to dementia care?
One of the most common misconceptions about dementia care in general is that not much can be done. It’s a progressive disease after all, right?
This is where medical SLPs can shine, and Adria Thompson, MA, CCC-SLP is here to talk about it! Adria is a dementia consultant who teamed up with an OT to create a dementia program and traveled around to different facilities to teach this program.
In this week’s episode of the Swallow Your Pride Podcast, Theresa and Adria explore the importance of understanding dementia stages and supporting caregivers. They address misconceptions about therapy for patients with dementia and cover recent changes in billing that allow for caregiver training without the patient present, including the potential for caregivers to receive financial support for their services.
If you support individuals with dementia and their caregivers in any capacity, you won’t want to miss this episode!

311 – Compassion Over Metrics: Prioritizing Trauma-Informed Care as Medical SLPs
“Wherever you're working, whatever setting you're working in, whatever profession you are, if you're working with humans, you should be trauma-informed.”
Rachel Archambault, MA, CCC-SLP dropped ALL the mics within the first three minutes of our discussion in today’s episode of the Swallow Your Pride Podcast!
Trauma-informed care, empathy, and just the human touch are all crucial in our profession, but there’s an obvious tension between meeting productivity standards and providing this level of care. It’s palpable. Does our current productivity model harm the quality of care we can provide?
What does trauma-informed care look like, and what can we actually do to make it work without stressing over time-based codes and RVUs?
Tune in to this week’s discussion and see what Rachel has to say about it and join her call to action!

310 – No Longer the Afterthought: Developing a HNC program and funding for specialized training
Raise your hand if you’ve ever received orders to see a patient with head and neck cancer AFTER they’ve started (or completed) radiation and/or surgery.
A million times yes.
It’s one of those common cases where speech-language pathology is an afterthought.
But in reality, we should be brought into the discussion before any treatment begins!
Katie Moore is all too familiar with this, which is why she passionately advocated for a head and neck cancer program in her department AND for specialized training to address complex impairments (like post-radiation fibrosis and lymphedema.)
Tune in to this week’s episode of The Swallow Your Pride Podcast to hear how Katie implemented a new program and rallied for support for SLPs to achieve the level of training they deserve.

307- The Curious Case of Functional Dysphagia: What to do when the swallow looks fine, but doesn’t feel fine.
You know when a patient complains about swallowing difficulty and you do an instrumental, but everything looks fine?
Excuse my lack of eloquence here, but…what the heck?
This is often referred to as functional dyspahgia, and in this week’s episode of The Swallow Your Pride Podcast, I had the absolute joy of talking about it with Jaimie Anderson MS, CCC-SLP, BC-ANCDS.
Together we discuss the challenges that come with significant swallowing complaints that don’t align with swallow studies, what functional dysphagia is, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options. Jaimie even throws in an analogy to help us better understand this mystery.

304 – Cultural Sensitivity in Dysphagia: Nourishing Patients Beyond Nutrition
So you have a patient with dysphagia…what do you immediately start considering?
Diagnosis…comorbidities…past medical history…past surgical history…current diet recs…
☝️Those are the typical go-to “textbook” checklist items, but there are other incredibly important considerations that will affect how you evaluate and treat your patient. These considerations impact your clinical recommendations and what matters most to your patients - and they deserve to be honored.
I’m talking about cultural and religious considerations in dysphagia - which is exactly what Michelle Weber Dehgan MA, CCC-SLP, BCS-S & Kiana Gardner MA, CCC-SLP dive into this on this week’s episode of the Swallow Your Pride Podcast!
Together, we discuss the importance of cultural sensitivity in managing dysphagia. Michelle and Kiana highlight the significance of considering patients' cultural preferences, dietary restrictions, and access to food during evaluations and treatment recommendations. They share the results of a survey conducted among SLPs that highlight the challenges in accommodating nutritional preferences and religious and cultural beliefs.

303- What’s Considered “Normal” in Infant Feeding: A Discussion with Katlyn McGrattan.
Is it ever “normal” for infants to cough during feeding?
Does it make a difference whether they’re breastfed or bottle-fed?
What should med SLPs actually understand and implement when it comes to infant feeding?
Infant feeding and our role as med SLPs is one of my FAVORITE topics to discuss, and my heart practically did a break dance when I got to sit down with Katlyn McGrattan, PhD, CCC-SLP, to discuss THIS very topic!
Katlyn is an SLP and a researcher at the University of Minnesota. She lives, eats, and breathes the world of pediatric feeding and swallowing (seriously, as a hobby, she and her husband are developing a medical device to better diagnose infant feeding goals).
Tune in to this week’s episode of the Swallow Your Pride Podcast where Katlyn discusses research on infant feeding and swallowing disorders, the importance of understanding the physics behind milk flow, and what med SLPs should understand when it comes to working in this corner of our field!

299 – Airway Induced Obstructions: What are they, and why should Med SLPs know?
Have you ever worked with an athlete or a young patient who fears exercise because it can trigger what feels like an asthma attack? Or maybe you’ve helped someone who feels like they can’t breathe when they smell a strong perfume or have acid reflux.
Only none of this is asthma…it’s a form of airway-induced obstructions.
In this podcast episode, Sara Davis, an SLP and the founder of Vox Fit discusses exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (formerly known as vocal fold dysfunction/paradoxical vocal fold movement disorder) and inducible airway obstruction due to other triggers. She opens up about the impact of high stress and pressure on individuals with upper airway disorders and the importance of behavioral therapy in managing symptoms.
Learn about the use of scopes for biofeedback, techniques for managing airway conditions, and the role of education and empowerment in helping patients understand and manage their symptoms. 284 – How Mental Health Professionals and SLPs Collaborate to Support Patients with Aphasia
Imagine walking into a patient’s room - but before you can introduce yourself, they burst into tears.
Your patient has aphasia and can’t communicate what’s running through their head - at least not in the way they used to be able to.
You try your best to ask questions and offer support, but it only leads to more frustration…
What do you do?
Mental health matters just as much as communication does, which is exactly why I brought on a Rehab Psychologist and Med SLP to share how they collaborate to better serve patients with aphasia.
In this episode Gina Danner PhD, and Jessica Sharon MS, CCC-SLP discuss the overlap between their professions and the importance of collaboration in maximizing outcomes for people with aphasia. They emphasize the importance of addressing anxiety and depression in patients with aphasia, and the need for collaboration in providing support for both patients and their caregivers.

278 – Taking Charge: Discussing SLPs and Leadership Roles in the Med SLP World: Part 2 – Edgar Vince Clark, M. Ed., CCC/SLP
Speech-Language Pathologists often express that opportunities available to other therapy disciplines or other medical professionals appear to be closed off to them. Their reasoning is that the perception of what speech-language pathologists do and the nature of our training impedes our ability to advance.
In this week’s podcast, my guest Vince Clark and I will continue to explore this perception. We designed a survey in 2021 that was accepted as an ASHA Convention presentation. Unfortunately, due to complications from Covid, we were unable to present it at that time. The survey was designed to determine why SLPs feel that leadership and career advancement eludes them. We will use this tool to determine patterns that may enlighten the profession as we seek to train our future leaders.
This is preliminary raw data, but eventually, we hope to shape this into a useful tool in the future. Our goal is to begin work that will empower SLPs.

If you got a consult for a pediatric TBI patient, would you expect them to be like any other peds patient? Or maybe like your adult TBI patients? Or... maybe you have no idea what to expect at all! There is little research to guide our practice with this unique population, but my guest this week is changing that!
In this episode of SYP, I have a conversation with Jessica Salley Riccardi, PhD, CCC-SLP, about her research in the pediatric TBI population. Jessica is the principal investigator of the BEaR Lab (Brain Injury, Education, and Rehabilitation) and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the questions they're seeking answers to, how this affects clinical practice, and how it might change policy in the future. She shares insightful info that SLPs can directly apply to their work today as well as considerations for the future work we have yet to do! Jessica has a deep passion and excitement for this population and shares her expertise in a way that is not only easy to understand, but that will also leave you excited to get back to your pediatric patients!
In this episode, you'll hear about:
-For SLPs, how is childhood brain injury different than adult brain injury?
-What are some of the greatest challenges in childhood brain injury for clinicians and researchers?
-How Jessica's research is contributing to SLP practice?
-How this research might contribute to policy for people with brain injury and the professionals serving them?
-Up-and-coming projects in the BEaR lab

How many times have you had a dysphagia patient that is at the end of their life and someone suggests a PEG? Maybe they still want to eat, because food makes their life enjoyable, but they don't want to be a DNR? What's the SLP's role in the decision-making process in palliative dysphagia management? And where do we even begin to tackle these issues? My guest this week is answering ALL of these questions and dropping some major inspiration while she's at it!
In this episode of SYP, I have a conversation with Mechelle Motsinger, MA, CCC-SLP about her experience in creating The Dysphagia Pathways Program, a decision-making guide for palliative management of dysphagia. She discusses her experience from her literature review to submission for publication and everything in between. Mechelle shares so many real-life situations in this conversation that SLPs will resonate with and find comfort in knowing they're not in this fight alone. Our field will be grateful for the guidance of The Dysphagia Pathways Programs for years and years to come.
In this episode, you'll hear about:
-What is The Dysphagia Pathways Program?
-What is the SLP's role in palliative care?
-Does a patient have to be a DNR if they don't want to follow the recommended diet?
-How can SLPs have difficult conversations, hold space for their patients, and help their physician colleagues in the same breath?

265 – Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome and the SLP – Erin Redle Sizemore PhD, CCC-SLP
Looking to get into the NICU or EI settings? My guest this week is sharing her experience working with these populations and some of the newer challenges they're facing. As the opioid epidemic continues to devastate far too many lives, our youngest patients unfortunately are included in that. Erin Redle Sizemore, PhD, CCC-SLP is sharing how SLPs can help these children in the NICU and EI to set them up for success long term.
She is a wealth of knowledge about Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS) and what development looks like for these children. Erin shares ideas for providing the best care for this population and how we can best prepare SLP grad students to work with these patients.
Dr. Sizemore also gives us a peek into what it's like to start a brand new master's program for SLPs (the tough and rewarding parts!) when she's not serving her patients in the NICU! She's making such a massive impact on the future of our field, the patients we see, and the practices used. This conversation will leave you nothing short of awe-struck and inspired!
In this episode, you'll hear about:
-Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome (NOWS)
-Speech, language, and feeding development in children with NOWS
-Ideas for alleviating long-term difficulties for children with NOWS
-Trauma-informed care

264 – Pediatric Feeding in Real Life: From the NICU to the Schools – Lauren Pontoppidan Straughan MA, CCC-SLP
Are you a medical SLP or a school SLP? What if I told you that you don't have to choose? Sure, many SLPs work in schools and PRN in a medical facility on the weekends or during school breaks... But what about the SLPs who work in the schools and help their PFD kids in the academic setting? My guest this week is sharing how she's paving the way for PFD to be treated in the school setting in her community after seeing a need left unmet!
After all, these kids are eating at school and don't get to check their PFD at the door...
In this episode of SYP, I have a conversation with Lauren Pontoppidan Straughan, MA, CCC-SLP about pediatric feeding disorders, the weight PFD parents carry, and the many settings in which SLPs can help PFD patients (hint: it's not just for "medical" SLPs!)
Lauren is deeply passionate and incredibly knowledgeable about PFD, but what I admire most about her after this conversation is her ability to meet families where they are and consider the entire picture of not just the patient, but their entire family when making recommendations and walking through the PFD journey with them. She's an asset to every family she encounters, her school team, and the entire field of speech-language pathology!
In this episode, you'll hear about:
-Getting into feeding/dysphagia when your CF was done in a school and the false dichotomy of the "medical SLP" vs "school SLP"
-Challenges and benefits of each setting (school, clinic, home health)
-Key differences in assessment and treatment of babies versus adults
-Valuable courses for pediatric feeding
-The role of the SLP for sensory feeding disorders

263 – The SLP Field of Dreams: If You Build It, The Patients Will Come – Katie Moore, MS, CCC-SLP
As SLPs, we often have BIG dreams of how we can improve our field, our facility, and the care our patients receive. All too often, these big dreams are suffocated by red tape and never come to fruition despite SLPs' most valiant efforts. It's certainly an uphill battle, but my guest this week is showing us how to pave our own path to the field of our SLP dreams.
In this episode of SYP, I have a conversation with Katie Moore, MS, CCC-SLP, about her monumental achievements in her career, including building not one but two full-time positions in her outpatient rehab facility but also building an entire Head and Neck Cancer Clinic where she works hand-in-hand with her surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists, and the entire medical team to provide the best care for cancer patients (including pre-treatment education! *cue the clapping from SLPs everywhere*)
Katie is tenacious and determined but she is also laser-focused on providing the highest quality of care to help her patients win.
