059: Leading Performance with Empathy with Daniel Murray
Empathy is often misunderstood in the business world, but it is a powerful strategy that develops effective leadership. Empathy begins with having a shared understanding. In this episode of the Business Chat Podcast, I have a fascinating chat with Daniel Murray about leading performance by using empathy. It’s no secret that there’s a shortage of empathy in business organisations. The main reason behind this is that organisations have become more complex over the years, and what’s disappointing is that we don’t take the first step towards empathy, we make assumptions and then move on. Demonstrating empathy in business allows for effective and highly engaged teams to flourish. Time Stamps: Why is there a short supply of empathy in organisations? 056: Sales Conversations that Convert With Ian Stephens
We are all in sales, whether we are selling a tangible product, ideas, or our own brand. And when it comes to sales, we want to appear authentic and genuine to serve the right clients. Sales and selling are often associated with having an icky feeling, but our guest today shows better ways to influence and get our ideas across to other people. In this episode of the Business Chat Podcast, I speak with Ian Stephens, a Peak Performance and Sales Productivity Coach, award-winning speaker, and author. Ian shares that the key to executing a successful sale is curiosity. Some don’t listen to a client’s story with gusto and intent, rather, they immediately jump into solution mode. For Ian, it’s important to engage in a conversation with a blank page, he listens and asks good questions, and is not tempted to offer solutions right away. He believes that clients can tell if a person is genuinely concerned about their issues, needs, and challenges. By having the mindset of curiosity, you are directing the conversation towards a better chance of converting. 054: First Impressions for Online Meetings with Warwick Merry
In the past two years we’ve spent so much time in front of our screens attending events, or meetings. In this episode, I speak with the wonderful Warwick Merry. He is a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) and Certified Virtual Presenter (CVP). Warwick shares how we can create the best first impression for online meetings and presentations. For Warwick, creating the best impressions start with what he calls The Holy Trinity which consists of lighting, composition, and sound. You don’t have to spend a lot of money, you can just work with what you have. When you have good lighting, you can stand out instead of blending in with the background, and sound great, you’ve already done the first part - getting everyone’s attention. As the world is changing, we should also adapt instead of sticking to our old, irrelevant ways of doing things. 053: Working Together in a Multigenerational Team with Lauren Dixon
For the first time in history, our workforce is composed of four generations. These generations bring with them their strengths, weaknesses, beliefs, and values. With that in mind, it’s not unusual to experience some clashes in the work area. However, these can be easily remedied. Instead of labelling people from another generation as different from you, look for the knowledge that you can gain from them. In this episode, I have an interesting and insightful conversation with Lauren Dixon. She is a Career Coach and Host of the Work Upgraded Podcast. Lauren shares the impact of working together in a multigenerational team. These diverse generations are composed of the Baby Boomers, Millennials, and Gen Z and Gen X. Also, whether we admit it or not, we have assumptions about each group. We may see boomers as technophobes, millennials maybe seen as lazy, Gen Zs have a short attention span and Gen Xs are assumed to be slackers in the workplace. These assumptions actually affect how we communicate and connect with people at work. Despite having these general stereotypes, Lauren has noticed a lot of good things from these multi-generations. Boomers are excellent in phone communications, millennials started the movement for work-life balance and mental health, Gen Z cares about social impact, and Gen X is self-sufficient and results-oriented. Lauren also highlighted the main drivers for these generations. She mentioned that younger generations are more purpose-driven and these play a huge factor in the decision they create at work. To have a harmonious relationship in the workplace, these generations need to get rid of the assumptions and look at the other person as humans who have diverse values and ethics. It’s significant to get to know the individual as a person and not just someone from a different generation. This strategy allows us to acknowledge their communication preferences and gives us the opportunity to develop amicable relationships. 052: Create Your Bucket List with Leanne Blaney
It’s the beginning of the year and most of us are very enthusiastic about setting our goals. This seems like an ordinary circumstance when we welcome the new year but not all of us have the passion and commitment to stick to our goals and make them a reality. There are many reasons why we never achieve our objectives, but the main cause is we’re not clear on how we want to do it. We often write goals that are too broad and general, yet we fail to look at the specifics needed to fulfill them. In this episode, I have a compelling conversation with Leanne about how a bucket list can help you to live a purpose-filled life. Leanne wears many hats, she is a Certified Bucket List Coach, podcast host, speaker, and author. For Leanne, a bucket list is not always about being able to travel, facing challenges, or about the grand things. It’s a list that motivates you to wake up every single day and work on the small things. In this day and age, it has become a normal phenomenon to worry about what tomorrow will bring. These worries steal from us the ability to enjoy and live our life now. Leanne mentions that the beauty of having a bucket list, allows us to prioritize how we want to live our lives, enjoy the present, and know the things that will bring us closer to our purpose and happiness. The first step to achieving what’s on our bucket list is doing one thing that will help you move toward your goal. You can perform small steps on a daily or weekly basis. Doing so makes your bucket list less overwhelming, and you develop the confidence that you can actually accomplish your goals. Leanne executes her process of brain-dumping by getting all the big ideas and listing down the steps she needs to do. This strategy allows her to look at the big picture and the tiny details that she can either tweak and improve that will lead her to achieve her goal and true purpose. 051: How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome with Fiona Redding
Often when we are put in a place where we have to show our knowledge and expertise about a certain topic, we doubt ourselves and feel like we are a fraud. These self-limiting beliefs and harmful narratives are known as the Imposter Syndrome. Imposter Syndrome is usually seen in accomplished people who feel uncomfortable accepting or even recognising their achievements. In this episode, I have a value-filled conversation about how to overcome Imposter Syndrome aka Imposter Phenomenon with Fiona Redding. Fiona is a mindset and meditation coach, speaker, and author. The term Imposter Syndrome was originally coined by university professor Pauline Rose Clance in 1978. She had women students who were academically good but would downplay or dismiss their potential. She realised that it’s not just a syndrome but it’s a phenomenon that happens to all genders. From then on, the concept of the Imposter Syndrome was widely explored. Fiona explains that we have a set of programs and beliefs about ourselves that affects our emotional state. When we do things that we haven’t done before, we’re going to get shown that this is not okay. This is what we call stepping out of our comfort zone. The moment we step into unfamiliar territory, self-doubt starts creeping in. We fail to see our brilliance, and we resort to feeling inadequate and reducing our self-worth. Fiona mentions that this phenomenon can happen anytime, and it’s best to know the actions that you can do when it strikes. The initial phase should start with having awareness. We have to be aware of what we’re thinking and feeling. It also helps to know your truth, ask yourself if your thoughts and feelings are true or are they a product of the imposter phenomenon. You can also employ the help of other people who see things from a different perspective. Remember that the Imposter Syndrome doesn’t choose its victim, you need to be ready when it shows up, and eventually, you will get better at how to deal with it. 050: Awesome Lessons From Podcasting
Time indeed flies fast when you are having fun. This is the perfect description of how Lisa feels about her podcasting journey. In this mini-episode, Lisa shares the awesome lessons from podcasting that she gained from the time she started the Business Chat podcast. She mentions that podcasting has given her the ability to learn new things and meet people across the globe. Through her learnings, she can share valuable resources with her clients. Although podcasting is a fun avenue for Lisa to get value from her guests, this never undermined the fact that it was still hard work. Podcasting requires having the right systems and processes in place and for the wrong person, this may feel like a chore. There will come a time when podcasting will feel like too much work and the efforts outweigh the benefits. Having a supportive podcast tribe or community is key to continuing enjoying podcasting. Another thing that Lisa emphasized is why the metrics are not as significant as the connections and creating valuable content. For any person who wants to start his podcasting journey, there will be days when the numbers are low, but keep going because it’s going to be worth it. Furthermore, Lisa shares the significance of choosing guests wisely. She’s always grateful when guests with valuable insights and topics to share say yes to be on the Business Chat podcast. Overall, Lisa learned the value of never giving up and constantly uploading exceptional podcast episodes. Doing so, allows her to share valuable content that generates a positive impact on listeners from all over the world. 049: Leadership Communication with Chris Huet
Leaders who know how to communicate well with their team have one thing in common; they achieve substantial success within their companies. In this episode, I enjoy an amazing conversation with Chris Huet. Chris is a communications consultant, mentor, speaker, poet, and a former fighter pilot. Chris has been using the power of words to help leaders deliver their message effectively. He discovered his purpose in life while speaking a poem and an old, gentle lady approached and asked him, “how are you going to use your poetry to change the world?” It dawned on Chris that it’s possible to have an impact on others by using words. Throughout his career changes, from a fighter pilot to a poet to a communications consultant, he realized that there was a common link. He was using communication to change not only his life but also the world. Being in the air force taught him that communication needs to have a structure. It needs to be prepared and assessed. While his gig as a poet encouraged him to explore the creative areas of communication. Communication doesn't have to be rigid all the time. How we communicate changes according to the kind of people we speak to and this helps us get our best intentions across. In this time of uncertainty, Chris is helping leaders communicate well with their team. There is less opportunity to connect and communicate as employees are working remotely. Chris sees this as a challenge for leaders to step up and turn inwards and see what they can do to strengthen the relationship. He also encourages leaders to take part in difficult, uncomfortable conversations. With the help of his C.O.C.K.P.I.T. framework, leaders develop effective communication strategies that help build trust in the long term. 048: Getting the Most Out of LinkedIn for Leaders with Nathanial Bibby
LinkedIn has become the number one professional networking platform. It’s no wonder that business owners turn to LinkedIn to create more exposure and engagement with their target audience. In this episode, I chat with Nathanial Bibby who has been on LinkedIn for 10 years. Nathanial shares how leaders can get the most out of LinkedIn for their business success. He shares effective ways on how leaders can deliver value by maximizing what LinkedIn has to offer. Surprising as it may sound, leaders should not aim to go viral with every content they post. One of the things that leaders should focus on is checking they have a quality network on their LinkedIn profile. This should consist of people they consider as ideal clients. The second thing that leaders should consider is putting out content that greatly resonates with their audience. They should be mindful of people’s time and make sure that their content is delivering either education, information, inspiration, entertainment, or all combined. Furthermore, Nathanial mentioned leaders should get rid of the “it’s all about me” mentality. Instead of talking about how great your business is, discuss your clients’ successes or how people made their way to success. LinkedIn itself will not be able to boost your business to success, you have to think of ways to get engagement with people. As Nathanial suggested, you have to implement simple strategies that encourage engagement. An example of this is posting polls that don’t take too much time to read and analyze. If your posts are constantly getting a good number of engagement, in return, LinkedIn helps you get more exposure. Also, if you’re getting a lot of conversations in the inbox, it’s helping your content to get more noticed. When entrepreneurs know how to take advantage of how LinkedIn can help their business, they are laying the first stone for their business success. 047: Overcoming the Unthinkable with Kwesi Millington
No matter how much we carefully plan our lives, struggles will always be present. We are given adversities to build the resilience that will help us in overcoming the unthinkable. In this episode, I have a captivating conversation with Kwesi Millington who is a speaker, coach, author, and former police officer. Kwesi has been empowering people particularly the youth by sharing his professional and personal struggles. The defining moment that will change Kwesi’s life forever happened while he was working as a police officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. A man was acting violently at Vancouver International Airport. He and three police officers started handling the situation in a regular conversation then it eventually led to a struggling arrest and sadly, the man died of heart failure. Although the incident was recorded and the court cleared Kwesi of any wrongdoings, he was still tried and convicted of perjury. He ended up serving 10 months in a correctional system in Canada. During his time in jail, Kwesi realized that adversities in life are inevitable. He knew that he has a purpose and that is to be of help to others. When he got out of jail, it didn’t mean that he was completely free. He endured decades of public scrutiny and bullying that he still gets from time to time. Instead of dwelling on the negative, Kwesi made it a point to look for something in every adversity he undergoes. Kwesi manages to turn every struggle into an ability to rise above adversity. He wants to share this empowering movement with people who are going through any difficulties. Kwesi never thought that doing the job he believed would make a difference in other people's lives, will greatly change his. Now, with his speaking and coaching programs, he wants people to realize that life may be filled with obstacles, but we can always rise and overcome it all. 046: Authentic Leadership with Deborah Coviello
Gone are the days when leaders are only meant to be followed. Now, more than ever, we need authentic leadership that will move, inspire, and create a positive impact on people. In this episode, I chat with Deborah Coviello who advocates implementing authentic leadership beyond the boardroom. For Deb, leaders need to know who they are as a leader and why do they lead. People have become sick and tired of leaders only in title. They need someone who will roll up their sleeves and go side by side with employees. Moreover, there should be genuine care for people who are working with them. Deb believes that leading authentically starts with doing the self-work. It requires the recognition that something needs to be done differently. Also, leaders should let go of the things that are no longer serving their purpose. Although leaders can easily lose themselves in the process of leading, the willingness to change and do better should always be present. When leaders are not open to making certain adjustments, they will not be heard, it delays decisions, deflates their confidence and ultimately, they are reduced to being transactional managers. The goal of being an authentic leader is to deliver influential messages that will inspire people to be more creative in their work. It creates an impact on how communication should be done. Deborah believes that results should never be the main target of a leader. After all, leaders are working with people with different emotions and personalities. The work needs to begin with managing good communication and making sure that they are on the same page. The growing demand for authentic leaders is an indication that people don't just want someone they can follow. Rather, we need leaders who are open to experimenting and following their hearts. 045: Find Your Purpose Without the Pressure with Andrew Millar
It’s not always easy to discover what we’re born to do. We might think, is it possible to find your purpose without the pressure? In this episode, I speak with Andrew Millar who’s been helping business owners find their true purpose. For him, the key to business enjoyment starts with knowing the meaning behind existence. Unfortunately not everyone goes to this life stage. Andrew helps entrepreneurs by identifying natural pressures that are holding them back from enjoying the success they worked hard for. There was a time in Andrew’s life when he worked as an insolvency practitioner. He was running and selling businesses. Andrew worked with business owners on both ends of the spectrum; entrepreneurs who were about to lose everything and those who were very successful in their field. People who saw their business collapsing had a good excuse to not appreciate life however, he also saw that even successful ones weren’t enjoying life as they should. The lack of enjoyment came from not knowing true purpose and the immense pressure of how success is seen. The society brings too much pressure on having material wealth to be considered successful, but it was not always about this, it’s about something deeper. Andrew shares how he helps people unravel the path to discovering purpose and how to deal with external pressure. He is building a community that knows the real value of success. He changes the conversation to success in business also mean enjoying it to the fullest rather than how much money you are making. It wasn’t enough for a company to have lots of sales and profit, it was essential that people enjoy what they are doing. Knowing one’s purpose allows for better enjoyment both in life and in business, and for Andrew, this is the true measurement of success. 044:Embracing Life and Celebrating Ageing with Catherine Palin-Brinkworth
We often hear people say that they don’t want to become old as if it’s a bad thing. The impact of this stigma is seen especially in women ageing while in the workplace. Women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s feel like they have become invisible and ageing has become a hidden issue when they want to advance in their careers. In this episode, I chat with Catherine Palin-Brinkworth who is a motivational speaker on leadership and change. Catherine shares her struggles as a woman in a male-dominated workplace. She also talks about how she embraced life and celebrate ageing. For Catherine, growing old is a privilege that should never be taken for granted and something that should not be looked at as a disadvantage. 043:Top Tips on Trusting Leaders with Conor O'Malley
Leaders need to establish trust in their organizations by encouraging an individual’s being and doing. In this episode, I have a lovely chat with Conor O’Malley an executive coach, author, speaker, and a self-proclaimed CEO’s caddy. We tackle the top tips on trusting leaders. For Conor, trust is an assessment, and through his R.I.S.C.C.C factors, business executives can evaluate if they are instituting trust within the organization. People may find themselves consistently asking “How do I trust you? Or how do I trust me?” The only answer to this is - trust begins and ends with the self. It’s a consistent commitment to perform self-assessment. When leaders constantly assess themselves they become more clear, they learn the art of asking questions and the company’s input is always better. They develop both the vulnerability and the courage to lead their people in climbing the ladder of success. 042: Courageous Leadership Is Doing What’s Right Not Easy with Chris Nicholls
When we go through a crisis it will either forge us to become a leader or pull us in a downward spiral. In this episode, I am joined by Chris Nicholls, a crisis leadership specialist and a motivational speaker. He was a former ABC investigative journalist and in this line of work, he experienced a crisis that will shape the course of his life. In 1993, he was given the longest-serving sentence for any Australian journalist after refusing to disclose his source for a government corruption case. He was charged with contempt and stayed in a maximum security prison for 4 months. Chris’s imprisonment developed his belief that no one is ever immune to an unanticipated crisis. This led him to look at life using a crisis perspective and crisis has to be dealt with from within. For him, courageous leaders are not born, they are made, and they are made in crisis. They are bound to make mistakes, but it takes one act of courage to look within, see what needs to be done and do the right thing.
