Episode 27: Let's Get Analytical About Energy Sustainability
Sustainability… It is as prevalent a topic in the process industries as it is anywhere in the world today. In this episode of Digitalization Tech Talks we discuss the topic of energy sustainability and explore how process analytics can be used as part of a digitalization strategy to assist manufacturers in their transition to net zero. This is possible using process analytical measurement devices, such as gas chromatographs, oxygen analyzers, and environmental emission monitoring systems, that collect data that can be analyzed through digitalization tools to generate important KPIs related to maintenance, reliability, and calibration and displayed in a dashboard format that alerts plant personnel when action is needed. The introduction of digital technologies is helping the process industries do things better, faster and more efficiently. It’s also creating new challenges for companies as they strive to become digital enterprises by fully incorporating these technologies into all aspects of their operations. For example, if a deployed solution doesn’t work as intended right out of the gate, any benefits derived from the implementation can be negatively impacted. This is why it’s critical to think about ways to keep your digital enterprise up and running once it’s off the ground. In fact, this step is almost as important as deciding to start on the digitalization journey in the first place. Join us for the 24th episode of Digitalization Tech Talks, where Siemens digitalization experts Jonas Norinder and Don Mack explore how to care for your digital enterprise using new and innovative approaches. Episode 21: Digitalizing the Process to Optimize Operations
Process modeling, mostly in the form of process simulation, has been a key tool in the process industries for many decades. Traditionally this has been for offline applications such as front-end engineering design and control system design. But the usage of process modeling has expanded as it is now possible to implement online plant models that contain deep process knowledge; the models are connected to real-time data on operational plants. These so-called digital applications can operate at a unit level, a plant level, a site level, and even a multi-site level, providing significant new information to operations and maintenance that allows them to run at an ‘always optimal’ condition. In this episode we discuss the benefits and why this is possible now. We also cover how this is possible, challenges to overcome, and first steps to take to implement a digital application. Our guest is Costas Pantelides, CEO of Siemens Process Systems Engineering and Professor of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. Episode 18: Don’t Be Alarmed with Process Event Analysis
Having good alarm management in a process automation system is critical to safe and productive process control. Unfortunately, many current installations have significant room for improvement as current implementations often include standing alarms, chattering alarms, redundant alarms, and alarm floods that can overwhelm the operators during abnormal situations, potentially leading to production outages or worse. It’s an alarming situation! In this episode, we are joined by Ethan Cook, Technical Consultant for Siemens Digital Industries who will discuss how to improve alarm management by utilizing international standards and guidelines as well as integrating digitalization. New analytics tools can sort through the mountains of alarm data to uncover areas for improvement and assist in optimizing alarm management systems leading to a much more relaxing and safe production environment.Show notes: Video (Siemens): Process Event Analytics Overview (https://youtu.be/9PGohqpmpls) Video (Siemens): Process Event Analytics Demonstration (https://youtu.be/WSaMmN8QZFw) Website (Siemens): Process Event Analytics (https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ec/en/view/109769738) White Paper (Siemens): Setting a new standard in alarm management (https://assets.new.siemens.com/siemens/assets/api/uuid:234f1026-298f-49dc-8961-0c5223c38588/white-paper-alarm-management-2021-final.pdf) Article (ISA): Alarm management questions that everyone asks (https://www.isa.org/intech-home/2020/march-april/features/alarm-management-questions-that-everyone-asks)Contact us: Ethan Cook (ethan.cook@siemens.com) Jonas Norinder (jonas.norinder@siemens.com) Don Mack (mack.donald@siemens.com)

Episode 17: Keep Your Distance With Remote Monitoring
Remote monitoring is an increasingly hot topic across the process industries. This rapidly growing digital technology is providing tremendous value by making access to information more manageable and less costly. This development is driven by cloud computing, intelligent gateways and cell phone connectivity that have become so mainstream and cost-effective that they’re now worth considering for even the smallest application – think easy access to specific measurement points, accurate tracking of inventory levels and simplified collection of compliance data. As one new user (and big fan!) of remote monitoring recently expressed, “I was able to go on vacation with the peace of mind that came from knowing my chemical tank storage levels in the plant at all times!”In this 17th episode of Digitalization Tech Talks hosted by Jonas Norinder and Don Mack, we cover the topic of remote monitoring. Joining us in this episode is our guest, Jack Roushey, who is a Product Manager at Siemens focused on remote monitoring solutions. Jack covers topics such as common challenges with remote monitoring, where and how companies have gained value from it, how current technologies have made the remote monitoring task so much easier than before, and much more.Show notes:Reference story (Siemens): City of Decatur Implements Siemens SITRANS store IQ for Operational TransparencyReference story (Siemens): Be There Without Being ThereReference story (Siemens): Chemical Storage Tank Inventory MonitoringWebsite (Siemens): store IQ remote monitoring solutionVideo (Siemens): Introduction to store IQ Contact us:Jack Roushey (john.roushey@siemens.com)Jonas Norinder (jonas.norinder@siemens.com)Don Mack (mack.donald@siemens.com)

Episode 9: Bringing Out the Best in Control Valves
Control valves have always been a hot topic in process plants because they can cause unplanned, costly shutdowns if not maintained properly. But when do you know when it’s maintenance time? Traditional approaches have been to do it at regular intervals, use the experience of the maintenance crew or opt for a time-based maintenance approach. Today, however, diagnostics and analytics data is much more easily accessible, which makes it possible to move from reactive to predictive and eventually prescriptive maintenance.Listen to today’s episode where Don Mack and Jonas Norinder talk with Frank Fortino about valve monitoring and how it can improve process control, enable better maintenance planning and minimize those dreaded unplanned shutdowns.Show notes:Website (Siemens): Apps and Digital Services for Process Industry (https://sie.ag/3uQIGCo)Reference story (Siemens): DuPont Improves Valve Monitoring and Maintenance with Siemens App (https://bit.ly/3V3kzeh)Contact us:Frank Fortino (frank.fortino@siemens.com)Jonas Norinder (jonas.norinder@siemens.com)Don Mack (mack.donald@siemens.com)
