#864 Interview with celebrity animal ecologist Karl Ammann
Karl Ammann uncovers wildlife trafficking, poaching and other forms of brutal exploitation of the planet’s most iconic species. Circumventing red tape and challenging the status quo established by governments and supranational bodies, he discloses the shameful silence of international bodies and puts names and responsibilities behind the ongoing death of nature.
He is a leader of the campaign that gained worldwide recognition of the bush meat crisis in Africa. He is an advisory director to several organizations, including The World Society for the Protection of Animals , The Cheetah Conservation Fund, and The Biosynergy Institute.
After studying at St. Gall Graduate School of Economics and graduating from Cornell University’s Hotel Management School in 1974, Karl worked on new project development and marketing for InterContinental Hotels, first in Kinshasa where he helped to organize the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” with Muhammad Ali, and then worldwide, traveling to over 100 countries.
Karl first recognized the scale of the bush meat trade in 1988, while traveling on one of the legendary Zaire River boats. Since then, he carries a camera as his sidearm, shooting scenes of chimpanzees, gorillas and other wild animals being butchered for sale as expensive bush meat. One of his priorities has been researching the status of the apes in Africa and Asia, which exposed the bush meat trade and the illegal trafficking of orphans. In the process, he also initiated decade-long ape research and conservation projects in the northern Congo.
More recently he produced a series of documentaries exposing the trade of wildlife products and live animals, illustrating the little known characteristics of the demand side.
Ammann’s reports and documentaries convinced the European Parliament and leaders of over twenty African states to sign a proclamation against the slaughter of apes and caused the government of Cameroon to convene a national conference on the illegal bush meat trade. For this work, he received the Dolly Green Award for Artistic Achievement at the 11th annual Genesis Awards banquet in Los Angeles in April 1997. Throughout his career, Ammann has won a wide range of awards, including TIME Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment.

#839 Justin Woodbury on Learning to Love, Forgive, and Heal After Emotional and Sexual Abuse
Justin Woodbury was raised on a small farm out in the country on the west side of Ann Arbor, Michigan. A child survivor of church abuse, he decided to start his life over at age thirty in Littleton, Colorado. Justin began advocating for victims of abuse after he held his son in his arms for the first time and realized the weight of responsibility he would have as a father. Since then, Justin has made it his life's mission to speak out against abuse in all forms and to be a voice for victims, especially those who were abused in a religious setting. When he's not working, Justin enjoys camping, hiking, and, most of all, spending time with Emily and their two beautiful children, Jackson and Juliette. #832 Psychoanalyst Avgi Saketopoulou on Sexuality Beyond Consent
Avgi Saketopoulou is a psychoanalyst and professor who works with transgender kids and their families.
Rather than buy into the notion that trauma can be cured, she reroutes our attention to what traumatized subjects do with their pain. Those who surrender to the fact that their pain cannot be eliminated, she argues, are sometimes able to do things with trauma.
In this radical alternative to thinking about racialization, consent, and trauma, Avgi dares us to step into a different territory, where we do not guard the self but risk experience.
On her website, she describes her work in the following terms:
"In my office, located in Union Square, I treat children -as young as age 3- adults, couples, and polycules. I work with a wide array of issues, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties, and have extensive experience with variant genders, in both children and adults, and queer sexualities. My practice includes a racially and ethnically diverse range of individuals.
I trained as a clinical psychologist in NY after having moved to the United States from Greece and Cyprus. I subsequently completed training as a psychoanalyst at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.
As part of my academic work, I teach at the NYU PostDoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. I am also on the faculties of several other psychoanalytic institutes, such as the William Alanson White Institute, the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, the Stephen Mitchell Relational Center, and the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, where I offer intersectionally-informed courses on psyhosexuality and gender.
I also contribute to my field by publishing my own research; by serving on the editorial boards of several academic journals; by leading study groups; and by supervising colleagues' clinical work. In October 2021, I co-chaired the inaugural conference "Laplanche in the States: the Sexual and the Cultural", the first US-based event dedicated to the work of Jean Laplanche (for more information, visit www.laplancheinthestates.com) I am also co-executor of the Muriel Dimen Literary Estate which administers Dr. Dimen's archive, as well as the Muriel Dimen Prize -through Div 39- and the Muriel Dimen Grant -through NYU Postdoc."

She writes teaches and lectures in the intersection of law, technology, health and privacy. Gaia is also the mother of three children who grew up in a world of smartphones, iPads and social networks.

The book draws out the legal action that can pressure the technology industry to re-design its products to reduce technology over-use.
Gaia has academic degrees in both law and psychology. Her research combines findings from psychology, sociology, science and technology studies with law and policy. Gaia’s research has been featured extensively by the media including the New York Times, Forbes, ABC News and Psychology Today.

#829 Dr. Mike Deninger on a new Eye Movement treatment for resolving trauma
During the first half of his career, Dr. Mike Deninger rose to a leadership position in the education of deaf youth as an administrator at Gallaudet University. However, in his 40s traumatic childhood memories triggered a mental health crisis and an extended period of recovery. In the years that followed, he chose a new path as a trauma therapist and trainer after earning a counseling degree and trainer certifications in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Ericksonian Hypnotherapy and Eye Movement Integration (EMI). His innovations in trauma treatment culminated in the 2021 publication of "Multichannel Eye Movement Integration: The Brain Science Path to Easy and Effective PTSD Treatment." MEMI is an expansion of the original Eye Movement Integration technique developed in 1989 by Steve and Connirae Andreas of NLP renown. MEMI is distinguished from other eye movement therapies, because of its simple but clear theoretical model, its brevity and its rapid results. It also affords greater protection for clients than other eye movement therapies.
Dr. Mike is keenly aware of the renewal that’s possible when one frees the mind, relaxes the will and allows the body’s neurological systems to heal traumatic wounds. He is a sought-after public speaker and trainer, having made hundreds of presentations at national and international conferences. Mike now shares his knowledge of and experience with trauma treatment via live seminars and on-demand webinars as a trainer with the Arizona Trauma Institute. #827 Philosopher Tim Shaw PhD on Trauma and Moral Injury
Dr. Shaw has undertaken a lot of research on moral injury, which is the damage done to one’s conscience or moral compass when that person perpetrates, witnesses, or fails to prevent acts that transgress one’s own moral beliefs, values, or ethical codes of conduct.
Most research to understand moral injury has been with military Service Members and Veterans, as the nature of war and combat create situations where people may have experiences that contradict the values they live by in civilian life.
Examples of potentially morally injurious events in the context of war include killing or harming others, when officers have to make decisions that affect the survival of others, and when medics are not able to care for all who were harmed in a conflict.
The mission of the Great Philosophical Problems thinktank is to provide a unifying definition, and accompanying phenomenology, for the construct of Moral Injury to address suicide in veteran and wider civilian populations. Like the social lexicons provided by PTSD, they set out to provide the moral grammar for the “Signature Wound” of contemporary war.
Dr. Shaw is currently working with the head ethicist at The US Army War College, Dr. Timothy Mallard, on a submission for the Australian Royal Commission Into Defence and Veteran Suicide to launch the international definition of Moral Injury.
Dr. Shaw has a Ph.D. in Moral Injury and a Research Master's investigating the implications of Just War Theory. He has taught ethics at the University of Sydney and is also a leading voice in the critique of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas and the Just War Tradition.

#804 Art Therapy and Ecotherapy with UK Jungian Analyst Mary-Jayne Rust
Mary-Jayne Rust BIO:
I am an art therapist and Jungian analyst in private practice in North London. Alongside this, I lecture and facilitate workshops on Ecopsychology in a wide range of settings.
My therapy training began in art therapy in 1979. During the 1980s I worked in a men’s prison, as well as with women with eating problems at the Women’s Therapy Centre, London during the early years of feminist psychotherapy. These two workplaces offered diametrically opposed experiences: working in a male hierarchy with perpetrators of abuse versus working with victims of abuse in a women’s collective. This taught me a great deal about perpetrator and victim. Feminist psychotherapy helped broaden my understanding of how culture shapes our internal worlds.
In the early 1990’s I made several trips to Ladakh (on the Tibetan plateau) where I spent time with Helena Norberg-Hodge of ISEC. This experience impressed on me the seriousness of our environmental crisis. I then discovered Ecopsychology, an emerging field weaving together the ecological, psychological, political and spiritual. I joined a group of like-minded therapists, and together we explored ecopsychological thinking, facilitation, and supervision. John Seed and Joanna Macy were two of our mentors in this journey. My interest in eating problems expanded into an inquiry into our collective consuming of the earth, and the relationship between mind and body, soul and the land. I became fascinated by the differences between indigenous and western worldviews and how we might enable ancient and modern to live together today.
I love colour and I am a visual artist. I live in Nth London beside Queenswood, part of the forest which originally covered Britain. Highgate Hill and Muswell Hill are on the terminal moraine left by a glacier of the last ice age. I have an ongoing love affair with swimming in wild waters. Forest and pond, kingfisher, owl, cormorant and humans; it is all these places and relationships to whom I owe my thanks for the ideas that you find here.

#794 Omar Reda MD on The Wounded Healer, The Pain and Joy of Caregiving
It was during the armed conflict in 2011 when a group of fighters found Dr. Reda in a tent caring for trauma surviving children in Libya. The fighters indicated that Dr. Reda was needed on the frontlines of the fighting. Dr. Reda let them know that attending to the psychosocial needs of the children in the tent was indeed his frontline.
After 12 years in exile, Dr. Reda was able to return to Libya. While the Libyan people’s physical wounds were prevalent, their psychological trauma often went unnoticed. Due to the stigma and lack of education, mental health is not typically a focus in Libya. Trauma survivors needed psychosocial care. Dr. Reda found that traumas experienced by refugees are similar to the dysfunctional cycles and family dynamics of trauma survivors in general. Receiving his master’s degree from Harvard University in Refugee and Global Mental Health after completing medical school in Libya and while undergoing extensive training with the University of Tennessee, Dr. Omar Reda is now a board-certified psychiatrist practicing at the Providence Healthcare System. Dr. Reda is a leading expert in Psychotraumatology and Trauma-Informed Care as well as the mental health of Muslims, immigrants and refugees, the Libyan revolution, and the Arab Spring, and is the author of several books and a highly sought-after dynamic public speaker.
Living in Portland, Oregon with his wife and three daughters, Dr. Reda’s passion for healing focuses on tackling the family dysfunction and youth vulnerability resulting from trauma.

#792 Dr. Graham Music on his book RESPARK: Igniting Hope and Joy after Trauma and Depression
BIO
I have worked at the Tavistock Clinic in London for over 20 years, an internationally renowned NHS Foundation Trust which provides clinical services and trains therapists and other professionals. I teach on the child psychotherapy and other psychological therapy courses at the Tavistock, and supervises therapists there. I also lead on training in child development, neuroscience and attachment theory, and have a particular interest in linking cutting-edge developmental findings with therapeutic practice. My clinical work in the NHS is primarily with issues of trauma and the effect of maltreatment on children as well as on the families and other adults in the lives of such children.
After having done a variety of jobs and activities in my early adulthood, including buying and selling antiques, working in housing advice, community support services and various adventures, in the late 1980s I trained as a humanistic and integrative adult psychotherapist, a year with IPSS and 4 years with the Minster centre in London. I then went on to train in psychoanalytic observational studies for a further 3 years at the Tavistock before undertaking the four year Tavistock training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with children, young people and parents.
In addition, I have trained in a variety of other ways of delivering therapeutic work, most recently in Mindfulness. I have worked as a psychotherapist in private practice for over 25 years, and also in a variety of voluntary and statutory sector settings. These include Open Door, a psychotherapy service for young people in North London, GP Practices including Stamford Hill Group Practice, and for NHS Child mental health services in Enfield and also in Redbridge and Waltham Forest. A passion of mine has been developing new services for children and young people, for example in over 35 schools in Camden and East London and setting up Hear and Now, a counselling service for young people in Redbridge working in community locations as part of the local NHS Mental Health Trust. Until recently, I was an Associate Clinical Director at the Tavistock, responsible for a range of clinical services.
I also teach on a range of other courses and psychotherapy trainings in Britain and abroad, for example in Bologna, Istanbul and for 12 years, in Palermo, Sicily.

Neil D. Brown, LCSW, is a psychotherapist, author, speaker and management consultant based in Santa Cruz, California.
When clients come to Neil, they’re wanting more than an empathetic ear. They’re looking to solve a problem: a problem with a relationship, such as with a child, partner or work associate, or a problem with how they’re feeling in life. Trained in Family Therapy and now an author and trainer with extensive experience working with families with children and teens, couples, and individuals, Neil welcomes the opportunity to bring out-of-the-box solutions to the challenges clients are facing. His systemic approach allows him to understand the context in which problems are both formed and are healed. Additionally, Neil has worked in several industries as an effective corporate consultant.
