Ship owners need marine coating solutions that deliver fouling prevention for vessels with differing activity levels, shipping routes and construction. Selektope® is a unique biocide that, through biotechnology, creates the possibility of more sustainable and efficient marine paint systems. When attached to a ship’s hull, barnacles harm the hydrodynamic drag. The hard shells cause increased friction between the hull and water, directly related to increased fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Captain John Konrad is THE influencer in the maritime industry. He started the gCaptain, which is currently the largest media outlet in the maritime domain. John is a big fan of Greta Thunberg; she says things people don't want to hear. But, that is what we also need to do; talk about the good and the bad in our industry. If we don't acknowledge the problems we have as an industry, then we cannot solve them - and become better. We continue the discussion about; what is a fair future for seafarers? Dr Jason Zuidema, Executive Director, North American Maritime Ministry Association, NAMMA, share his view on what we need to do to make seafarers keyworkers. He says it's about respect and using the instruments already in place. Abandonment in 2021 is a disgrace. Also, seafarers must be able to trust that they get paid. Jason thinks seafaring it's an honourable profession. Seafarers are very proud to be seafarers; it's the uncertainty that is wearing down. It's not the hard work or the hardship that comes with leaving loved ones; it's the uncertainty of now knowing when you come back the next time or if you get paid. In the end, Jason does a call for support of seafarers; everyone can do something to show kindness to international seafarers. Make sure you listen to the end. What is your view on what Jason says, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for listening.

159 Anthony Day, Blockchain Partner, Global Business Services, IBM Ireland Ltd
During the pandemic, we have seen a crew change crises. Seafarers have not been able to travel between the ships that constitute their workplace and their country of residence due to travel restrictions. High-level meetings have been taking place, aiming to get seafarers designated as "key-workers", which would lead to exemption from specific COVID-related travel restrictions and make it possible for the 200,000 stranded seafarers to become repatriated. Here is a link to IMOs Q and As about the crew change crises. Currently, the next step towards normality is vaccination. The key-workers status would move seafarers up the line in the queue. The next step after that is how to prove vaccination and clearance for Covid-19 through a negative test. One suggestion is a Digital Health Pass, and that is what this episode is addressing. Meet Anthony Day, working at IBM in Dublin, who focuses on digital health pass and how complicated it can be to get national health authorities to agree on a global standard. Anthony describes how a digital health pass would make the certification easy to show on a mobile device when travelling or entering a sports arena. He explains blockchain technology and gives us insights into the various considerations that have to be considered. Anthony has his podcast called Blockchain won't save the world if you are interested in the tech behind the digital health pass, blockchain. Thank you for listening! In episode 122 you will hear Frederick J. Kenney, Director, Legal and External Affairs talking about the International Maritime Organization. If you are interested in the Adopt a Ship programme or the IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador scheme or the Greenwich Maritime Museum here are the links. 121 Linda Ryan, Director Administrative Division, International Maritime Organisation, IMO
In episode 121 you meet Linda Ryan, Director Administrative Division, International Maritime Organisation, IMO, who is the first of four episodes recorded with people "inside the IMO", explaining the important work that is being done in this UN Body. Linda speaks about the "Functional review" that is going on within IMO, that is a "change" project aiming to make the organisation more effective and relevant to the maritime industry. "Young IMO" is something that I never knew existed but makes me very happy to hear about. We discuss who is deciding the theme for the year within IMO, and I get the opportunity to express my gratitude for the theme this year "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community" but also my concern for what will happen once the year is over? What do you think? Is the IMO doing what you thought they were doing or are there some more questions that you wonder about? I love feedback, please give me some, I am @lenagothberg in most channels. 119 Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal, CEO Golden Ocean Management AS
Meet Birgitte Ringstad Vartdal, CEO of Golden Ocean Management AS in Oslo. Birgitte is one of the #WomeninShipping that is more often interviewed by the trade press than others, that comes with the task of being the CEO of a listed company. In spite of that, Birgitte doesn't see herself as a role model even though she understands that others do that. We talk about her background and what she thinks about the future and she gives good advice to young people who just started in the maritime industry. I think it was a treat to be able to sit down with Birgitte and chat about the topics at the top of my mind, what do you think? We are referring to the episode with Pia Meling in our chat, that is number 107 and you find it here. Birgitte is the 57th female guest in the Shipping Podcast, how did you like the 119th episode? 118 Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud – Director of Sales and Marketing for Exhaust Gas Cleaning, Wärtsilä
What is a scrubber? How does it work? Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud from Wärtsilä explains the basics around environmental footprint from the ship, for me. The technology has been there for quite some time but since there has not been any incentive to use it it's only now that the item has surfaced to the top of the agenda in the maritime industry. Heidi is a chemist, so she explains what happens if we are not reducing the SoX and NoX in the exhaust gas from ships. She also speaks about fuel, current and future, and what the shipowners of the world need to think about to reach zero-emission. Heidi is happy to see more females in the maritime industry and she herself is a good representative for the modern maritime industry. Heidi Johannessen Paulsrud is the 56th female guest, which makes gender diversity in the Shipping Podcast 47.4%. The goal is 50%/50% so not quite reached yet, but I am working on it. What is the diversity goal in the maritime trade press where you place your adds? Does it measure up to your own goals for gender diversity? Thank you for listening! What is your view on the 118th episode? Give me a shout-out on social media or comment on the website. @lenagothberg

Michael started his shipping career by going to sea on CARMEN, a car carrier, some 50 years ago, but found out that he was more interested in shipbroking and chartering, so he went ashore again. Now, the circle is closing as he is the sole owner of the Swedish Orient Line, which is now forming this joint venture with Wallenius Lines. When asked about his success, he shares that secret is to only hire who are smarter than yourself and build a loyal team to share both challenges and successes. In episode 116, we meet Deborah Layde, Grants Director at Seafarers UK, is a leading provider of grants to maritime charities and charitable maritime projects, working to help serving and ex-serving seafarers and their families who are experiencing hardship. Deborah is quite new at her job, previously in her career, she worked for Sir Terence Conran and also with developing the Butler's Wharf into what it is today. I get a chance to ask Deborah what she thinks about entering the maritime industry as we can be rather closed to newcomers, but she has not experienced that, quite the opposite in fact. Deborah is talking about so many interesting projects that the Seafarers UK is involved with, especially those trying to interest young people in entering the maritime community. What is your experience, have you seen any exceptionally good ideas that you can share with us, on how to do that? I love feedback, you know that by now. Welcome to the 109th episode of the Shipping Podcast and the 50th female interviewee! Cecilia Österman is the Chief Engineer that went ashore and decided to become a researcher. Cecilia doesn't fall in the usual perception of a researcher, she makes her findings easy to digest and is willing to stand up and speak about what she finds. Cecilia has now received funds from AFA försäkring (insurance company) to research the #metoo movement in the shipping community. She will look into how other industries have come up with ways to resolve the things that came into the light last fall. Here I share the video that was put together by the female sailors in Sweden, but you need to know that it's not a bedtime story, be prepared to hear the worse. 108 Shachar Tal, Co-Founder of Loginno
Meet Shachar Tal, the Co-Founder of Loginno , which is short for Logistic Innovation and their product Contopia, a term used to describe a world where every shipping container is real-time IoT connected, tracking of goods at sea. This interview was made online, Shachar in Israel and Lena in Sweden. Does it make any difference that the person interviewed is not in the same room? What do you think? Please send me some feedback at hello@shippingpodcast.com We discuss "who owns the data" in this episode, and who is driving the market? The way that Loginno is tracking the container is via a vent, which is a part of mechanic that is already on the container, you just switch to the one which is connected and there you go, you have the "spying box" as Shachar describes it. 104 Joanne Kelleher, Corporate Communications Advisor at Jumbo
Joanne Kelleher studied at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and in her Master's degree study she asked 37 Maritime Professionals what they want from their industry leaders and got some interesting results. Joanne shared her insights in an article on LinkedIn, which I found very interesting, so I decided to try and meet Joanne for an interview and she agreed and that is what we speak about in this episode, the 104th. Do we have the leaders we deserve in the maritime industry? Traditionally, there has been an authoritarian leadership with clear commands, there is only one Captain on the ship! Is that changing? What kind of leaders does the #nextgen of shipping people want from a leader? How can the industry meet the requirements of the young generation? Is there a new leadership on the horizon? Joanne and I really get into the nitty-gritty of leadership, diversity, WISTA, female leaders, participatory leadership and being a leader in different cultures. I would really like to start a discussion on this topic. What is your view? In addition, what do you think of the new logotype and the new artwork? After 100 episodes it was time for an update. New & fresh, I would say. Thank you for listening. Should you wish to support my job, please visit www.patreon.com/ShippingPodcast

I am happy that we got some time to speak about what it's like to be a female role model, what a lobbyist do and why it's so interesting with all the changes taking place right now. Listen to Helle and give your comments on what she is saying, do you agree? Are we in a paradigm when shipowners have started to open up and realise the value of being transparent and participate in the conversation around what the maritime industry contributes to global trade and the development of our future society? I know what I think, please let me know your thoughts. 102 Cynthia A. Hudson, CEO HudsonAnalytix
What is the approach to cybersecurity in the maritime sector? Is there enough awareness to make the right decisions? Meet Cynthia A. Hudson, CEO HudsonAnalytix, who I sat down with whilst at Podcast Movement in Philadelphia, USA last Summer. She underlines the importance of looking upon risk management more holistic and to gain knowledge about the various threats from cyberspace that the shipping company or ship management company faces. Internet of things, it's the internet of the sea now. Machine to machine communication, satellite connection, data science - this is all relatively new vocabulary to the maritime community, but still, we all need to understand what risks the balance sheet might open up to. Cybersecurity is another of the buzzwords right now. It was a pleasure to sit down with Cynthia and listen to her expertise in the area. What is your reaction to what she is telling? Please let me know, I am @lenagothberg in all social channels, or if you prefer to comment on the website, just go to www.shippingpodcast.com and give us your opinion. Meet Nicklas Viby Fursund, Partner & MD at Rainmaking Transport and listen to why he left the maritime industry and came back a decade later. He and his team are creating a platform for the maritime corporates and the start-ups where they can meet, and where venture capital can also find a haven for where they want to invest. 100 Lena Göthberg, Producer and Host of the Shipping Podcast
The 100th! It's a milestone! I take the opportunity to share what I have learnt by starting a podcast in the maritime industry. How it all started with a crazy idea and borrowed equipment onboard the worlds' largest container ship MAERSK MCKINNEY MOLLER and her Captain. I got the advice to start by sharing 4 episodes, just in case the prospective listeners wouldn't get hooked if I only shared one episode and that wasn't to their taste. 1. Captain Niels V Pedersen 2. Carl Johan Hagman 3. Jonathan Wichmann 4. Thina Saltvedt Those super interesting people were kind enough to give me the best takeoff ever, how could I go wrong when I had their support? I speak about "behind the scenes" and what I have learned about how the companies in the maritime industry view marketing & advertisements, i.e. not at all. It's time to rethink the branding of the entire maritime industry, we need to make changes to reach young people and attract them to the industry. I realise how us discussing autonomous shipping have effects on if young people want to study to become Master Mariners or not. In addition, I answer the most common questions I get as the little Disrupter I have grown to be. Do you earn any money on this? How do you find your guests? I would be happy to answer more questions, I just didn't want to bore you with too much information. Send in your questions, if you are tech savvy (!) you can use your mobile phone and record a voice message and send to me. That would be so much fun! If you are shyer, use my email hello@shippingpodcast.com Whatever you do, give me some feedback! /Lena https://www.patreon.com/ShippingPodcast

She is a force to be reckoned with and she has a very special talent for making visions into something tangible. Sofia is the brain behind the concept of the Opening Oceans Conference. Bjørn K. Haugland is a Naval Architect who got the sustainability perspective when he lived in China a few years ago. He started in the oil & gas industry and then worked with quality assurance of marine operations for a couple of years, but when he saw the environmental challenges his social interest became his focal point and today Bjørn is the Chief Sustainability Officer in the entire DNV GL Group. We discuss the changes to the industry today, how innovative the maritime industry is but how we as an integrated part of a longer supply chain needs to step up even more. Bjørn K. Haugland thinks that the maritime industry needs more female leaders and more female engineers, which will drive innovation and communication and make sure that we attract the brightest minds to our industry. Thank you for listening, this was the 8th and last interview from the Opening Oceans Conference held in Copenhagen, May 2-3, 2018. What do you think? Have you learned something new? At the Opening Oceans Conference, organised by NOR Shipping, I met with Paul Holthus, CEO of the World Ocean Council, WOC, who was one of the keynote speakers. Paul founded WOC when he saw that shipping and the ocean environment are both inseparably linked, but with the former having a dramatic effect on the latter. Listen to Paul speaking about how the Young Ocean Professional network works, through referrals and introductions and how this network is growing. 096 Peter Thomson, United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Ocean
Peter Thomson @ThomsonFiji the United Nations Special Envoy for the Oceans, was one of the keynote speakers at the Opening Oceans Conference in Copenhagen, May 2-3, 2018 and I managed to catch him for an interview. He travels the world to promote and advocate for the SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development Peter says it has been an uphill battle until the Ocean Conference in New York 2017, where the governments of Fiji & Sweden left a great legacy. After that, he sees a HUGE change in how the SDG 14 has risen to the agenda all over the world. Prosperity will depend on trade, so Peter Thomson has a very positive view of the future for the shipping industry, but we have to be seen to support the IMO strategy. I am so interested to hear your view on what Peter is talking about in this episode. You can reach me on @lenagothberg and Peter Thomson via @ThomsenFiji Thank you for listening!
Attending the Opening Oceans Conference, which creates a roadmap for maritime business leaders to explore the new ocean economy options, discover synergies with their existing businesses, meet investment and gateway partners and make profitable strategic decisions, in Copenhagen early May 2018, I met Daniela Fernandez, a passionate young woman who wants to engage young people in innovation, change and new ideas about how to use the Ocean space. Daniela is the Founder & CEO of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance. After having been invited to several gatherings with Heads of States and people from the United Nations, she asked herself "Why am I the only young person in the room?" and started to think about how the two worlds can come together. Now the Sustainable Ocean Alliance consists of 75 chapters in 50 countries, where each chapter gathers 15-300 youth leaders. Listen to Daniela and give her a shoutout in social media, what she is doing is so meaningful and necessary, so you need to get involved yourself. And don't forget to look into the new buzzwords, incubator, accelerator, and corporate accelerator. You need to know these terms and what they stand for. I am @lenagothberg in all social channels and I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for listening!
Invited by the Opening Oceans Conference, a new initiative by NOR-Shipping to help realize the potential of the ocean space, I met Nir Gartzman, from theDOCK innovation hub, who was invited to participate in the Nordic ThinkTank session. Nir has an interesting background, he is a Chief Engineer and an Israeli navy officer who has spent the last 10 years in the high-tech & the clean-tech sector in Israel when his passion for the maritime industry made him focus on the digital arena and co-found an innovation hub. TheDock gathers innovators, investors and corporate partners on the same platform, which has been set up after having met with 20+ other innovation hubs for other sectors in Israel, they can now say that this is the best practice for how to do it. Nir states that the coming 5 years will be very interesting for ships, operations, and ports. He can see the maritime sector follow the same paths as automotive & fin-tech has done and it's time to catch the opportunity to leverage the worldwide global connections that the maritime industry is so good at and make it into an advantage for a more transparent, accessible service to the customers. Listen to Nir and let us know your thoughts! Comment on www.shippingpodcast.com or in social media @shippingpodcast

093 Matthew Duke, Chief Business Process Officer, Grieg Star
Meet the environmental scientist who fell into IT, which made him fall into the maritime industry focusing on digitalisation & innovation, Matt Duke, Chief Business Process Officer, Grieg Star. Matt started his maritime career with Odfjell, where he became Global Head of IT and built up a fascination for the shipping industry, which he wanted to become better via IT and to save money by a more structured way of working. When it became time to move on there was a choice between shipping & digital - and he found somewhere he could combine those two passions, at Kongsberg Digital where he was one of the minds behind Kognifai. Matt was one of the keynote speakers at the Opening Oceans Conference in Copenhagen, early May, where this interview was recorded. With birds singing in the background (!). Remember the mantra? 092 Christopher Clott, PhD, Maritime College, State University of New York, ABS Chair of Marine Transportation and Logistics, Global Business Transportation Department
I met Chris Clott at the Opening Oceans Conference in Copenhagen early May and since he has a much experience from the maritime industry after having worked for liner companies, specialised in business strategy and also is one of the co-founders of the Maritime Global Innovation Centre, he gives a crash-course on where the maritime industry is right now when it comes to Industry Revolution 4.0. With the goal to influence & drive change, Chris sees the necessity of collaboration and he would very much like to have that once he has figured out HOW it's going to be done and then identified WHO can make it occur? If you want to reach out to Chris, he is @CCMaritime on Twitter. Chris thinks that Scandinavia is ahead of the US when it comes to digital transformation but he can see the entire spectra in a true transformation when looking on a global scale. There are the Prospectors, where he counts Scandinavia, the Analysts, the Defenders and the total Reactors. They are all there and even though it's most fun to look at the two first groups, the total reactors, they will probably not be here in a short number of times, things are changing, like it or not. What is your view on what Chris is talking about? Where are you in this development? Can you list some of the true prospectors? I would like to hear from you. I am @lenagothberg everywhere in social media, and there is a website for you to comment on if you are not into social media, it's www.shippingpodcast.com

090 Thomas Öström, Founder, Board Member and CEO of Climeon AB
Thomas Öström is the passionate person who wanted to find the solution to climate change. He is challenged by the use of fossil fuel and had an idea on how to use the energy in waste heat from industries and low-temperature geothermal heat to generate electricity. The company Climeon started in 2011 and has entered the maritime industry by turning heat into clean electricity, unaffected by weather conditions. Thomas says that the restrictions the maritime industry put on their product were really the best premises for developing their Heat power system. Listen to what Thomas has to say and let us know what you think about it, or just give a shout-out to yet a Swedish solution to a problem within the maritime sector. Ship finance, an exciting rare side of the maritime industry. How does it work, where is the capital? Can that capital be accessed by the new start-ups, or is that only for the traditional borrowers? Who is better to answer all my questions than Ingrid Due Gundersen, now CFO of Hoegh Autoliners, one of the 10 women to watch for the future in the maritime industry? We also chat about what it's like to be a woman in a male-dominated industry, where you attend dinners with forty people and you are the only female in the room. What does that feel like? The Port CDM group made a map of all stakeholders involved in a port call, they call it "the metromap", you can find it on the Facebook page of the Shipping Podcast. When looking at the #metromap it becomes obvious that if all parties involved had the same information about what and when things will happen, a lot of time will be saved. And time is money. In episode 64, you meet Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry (LL.B, LL.M (2), Ph.D International Law) who is the President of the World Maritime University based in Malmo, Sweden. She talks about her lengthy career within the United Nations system and especially the time she dedicated to the new Maritime Labour Convention, MLC, where 68 instruments now finally are merged into one single Convention. Cleopatra is passionate about gender equity, something she talks a lot about and how it is important that everything now put into MLC must be implemented into the law of the countries that has ratified it and translate these rights and obligations into impact on the ground. It was quite significant, when preparing for the new MLC, that the seafarers should enjoy the same fundamental rights at work as all other workers, human rights are universal and it is important that we value the work of those 1,2 mio seafarers who enables shipping to continue transporting 90 percent of our goods around the world. Meet Per-Olof Arnäs, PhD and Senior Lecturer in ICT-based (Information and Communications Technology) transportation systems at Chalmers University, who loves the 21nd century and thinks that everything is better now compared with before. P-O is a digital evangelist and has been so for as long as I have known him. We talk about the difference between Digitization and Digitalisation, where digitization is when you create digital information, you have information already but convert it into a digital format, but digitalisation, that's when you increase the use of digital technology to solve everyday problems for instance, or to create new opportunities. Of course, we go into a discussion on block chain, my latest craze and we talk about the times we live in how and how the maritime industry is adapting to them, or not. Catja Hjorth Rasmussen explains why it took 5 years to complete the remote control container management project, which is now in full operation at Maersk Line. The system has GPS tracking and has eliminated more that 100,000 manual pre-trip inspections. Catja joined the shipping industry fresh out of school as a shipping trainee, and has been in love with the industry ever since. The international environment, the fast pace and the ever changing environment was what attracted her to the industry and still excites her. You want to hear all the benefits of a remote controlled container management, and you want to listen to yet another young woman who is bringing new knowledge in to our community. It excites me that I have managed to find so many interesting young women with deep knowledge, especially when I get the answer that "all the women declined when invited to speak" from well renown shipping media. Thank you for listening, talking about and hopefully sharing this episode with your maritime network. That is the only way we will get more visible in this industry, by sharing and supporting each other. Johan is a national expert in measuring diffuse emission of hydrocarbons (VOC) and he works with European standardization (CEN). Johan explains what a "sniffer" is, how that technology works and how that was a spin-off from the original idea to develop survelliance tools to see whether ships were obeying international rules and regulations, or not. With a background from the car industry, Johan finds it interesting that no one asked on beforehand if it was possible to measure if the SECA regulations were obtained or not. We discuss the results from his work and how his "yellow mailbox" has become a "household name" globally. 031 Dr Tristan Smith, lecturer in Energy and Transport, UCL Energy Institute
Dr Tristan Smith is a lecturer in Energy and Transport at the UCL Energy Institute, where he leads a shipping modelling and analysis research group. Tristan has degrees in Engineering and Naval Architecture and he has been the coordinator of the project Low Carbon Shipping – A Systems Approach, leading two of the six work packages on ‘modelling the global shipping system’ and ‘regulation policy and incentives for low carbon shipping’. Tristan's research interests cover all aspects of shipping economics, logistics and operation and he has been leading a consortium of ten organisations to produce the Third IMO Greenhouse Gas Study 2014: a major publication for the industry, which is used as a reference for CO2 emission regulatory discussions for the future. It's interesting to hear Tristan explain the challenges the researchers meet when trying to explain the shipping industry and it mechanisms to the policy makers and what difficulties there is for the same researchers to reach the industry and convince them to let go of the mind-set of "what can we get away with". Hear how Tristan examines the often used arguments for why shipping should benefit from not making any changes to the current state of the business; Shipping is the greenest form of transport, Shipping is too important to the global economy, Shipping is intractable for developing countries & that the current technology is the only solution. It's a bright future with no shortage of stimulating employment opportunities that Tristan describes for the #shipping industry. Thank you for listening, please share this podcast with your friends! Any comment you may have on the content of this episode is welcome, use @ShippingPodcast for twitter or go to the website www.shippingpodcast.com don't forget to include @tristanps ;) Let's get the debate going!

030 Adam Kent, Director, Maritime Strategies International, MSI, London
Adam Kent has always loved ships and was actually a ship-spotter when he was young. He grew up on the Isle of Wight, but was never meant to work in the shipping industry. Maritime Strategies International is an independent shipping consultancy, producing market forecasting of the shipping markets. In order to do that you need to be on top of everything from steel price, unemployment rates and GDP to oil prices and new regulations. Adam explains what the drivers are for the various shipping segments and why they have such big impact on earnings and vessel values. We discuss the eco shipping, scrapping, and newbuilding market. We go through the shipbuilding market and we touch upon the new Panama Canal and if there is any credibility to the Nicaragua Canal. New trading patterns and Adams belief in a constant flow of new regulations to force the shipping industry into becoming more eco-friendly. As you understand, this is like Christmas for the shipping geeks - but hopefully it is also enlightening for those who hasn't seen the light yet, it is a very long and educational episode. Please enjoy! If you are interested in advertising in the Shipping Podcast, like the Swedish Club, please send an email to hello@shippingpodcast.com Thank you for listening! 028 Andreas Chrysostomou, Director at the Department of Merchant Shipping, Cyprus
Andreas Chrysostomou is a naval architect who grew up through the ranks and last year was Nomination for IMO as a candidate for the position of Secretary-General at the International Maritime Organisation, IMO. He got the possibility to elaborate on how he sees his dream of governing an international body like that. Andreas Chrysostomou is not new to the IMO system, in 1999 he was elected as Chairman of the Design and Equipment Subcommittee and 2003 he was elected as Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) a position he held until 2013. 027 Markku Mylly, Managing Director, European Maritime Safety Agency, EMSA
Markky Mylly, Managing Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency, EMSA, formerly employed by the Finnish Maritime Administration, but above all a "tanker-man" is running EMSA in Lisbon, which is the link between the member states and the European Commission when it comes to maritime regulations. Markku is of the opinion that the shipping industry is fulfilling the SECA regulations which came into full force Jan 1st, 2015. They have recorded more than 6,000 measurements and the majority is in compliance. Every year, more than 2,800 maritime incidents and accidents within European waters are reported to EMSA. Markku thinks that the 80 serious accidents reported last year has to be reduced, every accident means environmental and economic implications, but the fatal accidents has to be brought down to a minimum. People don't understand that Europe is totally dependent on shipping, it's paramount that we raise the profile of shipping. Have you got the recipe for spreading the word about shipping and the Shipping Podcast in particular? It's through sharing the fact that there is a Shipping Podcast and then writing a review. Please, feel free to put your view forward - it's easy!

We have an interesting discussion what good leadership contains and how to develop people reporting to you. We have a long conversation about how to get more women to the top management positions and from there into the Board rooms, where Yvonne now has reached a point where she thinks quotation is the only "quick fix" available. In the beginning of this episode a swear word (?) is used, apologies for that if you feel uncomfortable. Personally, I didn't know it was a swearword, that might say something about me.. 025 Karin Orsel, CEO MF Shipping Group, President WISTA International, Vice Chairman International Chamber of Shipping, ICS.

This episode of the Shipping Podcast covers a lot, 90 % of everything within shipping I would say; why is a ship called "she"? What is the responsibility of the Godmother of the ship? Per Erling Evensen just retired from the duty as Marketing Manager at Destination Gotland and has left for an around the world sailing tour for the coming years. Prior to him leaving, he took the time for a chat about how the concept of Destination Gotland was developed and what that has meant to the people of Gotland. He thinks the journey he has made since then has been fantastic and is thankful for being given the chance to make change possible! 008 David Kristensson, CEO Northern Offshore Services
Meet David Kristensson, CEO Northern Offshore Services and a shipping entrepreneur. David is born and raised on the island of Donsö, in the archipelago outside Gothenburg, which is a centre for tanker shipping in Sweden. Donsö has app. 1,400 inhabitants, 8 shipowning companies controlling 35 tankers in various sizes, trading North European waters. David is a Master Mariner and an Engineer. He grew up on and around ships and started his career as shipowner with a tanker vessel. Then he was asked by a friend to contribute with his knowledge to an offshore wind vessel, which gave him the idea to develop the concept of the high-speed catamarans that is the business today. Just to realise that the wind offshore industry needed to transport crew and equipment out to the wind farms is one thing, but to bring the concept to the next level, like getting the people being transported to feel comfortable, to find solutions before the demand is there, that is something else. One of Northern Offshore Services is Siemens Offshore Wind Power Solutions, who obviously has been very content with their co-operation. When David describes the work they do, how the transported people enjoy the ride with them and what skills is needed from the seamen onboard the vessel, it becomes obvious that this is a new segment for the traditional shipping industry. The fleet of Northern Offshore Services now includes 19 vessels. You can follow David on @JDAKristensson on Twitter and you can see a film of the vessels operated here and an interview with David from the Donsö Shipping Meet 2015 here. Another thing we talk about in the podcast is Prince Daniel's Fellowship, please follow this link to find out more about that.

Shipping propellers has been dominating Håkans life at least for the last 14 years, when he and his father bought the bankrupt's estate of Bergs Propulsion and developed it into a thriving business with a 25 % market share. Håkan shares his view on what it means to be a business owner, an innovator and a manager of a shipping supply company on the global arena. He explains the huge consolidation going on among the maritime engine manufacturers, what it means for the shipping industry to be a part of the connected society and how that will attract young people to the industry. Håkan describes the 2008 financial crisis as "walking the plank and not knowing how far you will fall at the end of it, 2 meters or 2 kilometres", and how his father was the anchor with courage and patience to wait for the upturn. Håkans' call to the entire shipping industry is to be cooler! He practice what he preaches and is now totally into sailing, where he is promoting his carbon fibre factory through his company’s' acquisition of the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) and the manufacturing of the M32 racing catamaran and the organisation of the M32 Series. You find his CV here and as you will hear, Richard originates from Australia, Perth. He mentions his colleague since many years, Marie-Claude (Maric) Boudreau with whom he has written many books. I met Richard at the first Maritime Informatics Conference organised by the Swedish Maritime Competence Centre, Lighthouse in May, 2015, where he was the keynote speaker together with Mikael Lind from Viktoria Swedish ICT. Richard gives a lot of good examples from other industries which has already managed to transform themselves into a service business, where he thinks that the shipping industry has to go. He gives 4 value propositions for the industry and he explains that shipping is a complex adaptive system. We speak about his slides from the presentation he gave, you will find them on Facebook if you would like to have a look at them. So, does Richard have the crystal ball?
