I mean they're not marketing in a meaningful and impactful way that brings in clients and revenue. I've brought my friend Megan Gillikin from Weddings for Real and The Planner's Vault onto the podcast today to help you break that cycle! It's time to step out of the same patterns that are NOT working and step into a culture of in-house marketing that will change your booking rate and your revenue. 170: What is Entrepreneurship Costing You?
Click Here to Join Us in The Planner's Vault I'm honored to welcome back to the podcast, my friend and fellow podcaster, Megan Gillikin. Megan and I have recently had many, hard, and truthful conversations about what owning a business and being entrepreneurs have cost us. What we want to do differently in the years ahead and what is REALLY important to us and how we'd like to be remembered. (hint: we don't want to be remembered as the best planner and venue owner ever). It's a conversation that I don't feel is had often enough. We start businesses and "grind it out" for years and many seasons before we take the time to look around at where we are and oftentimes, it's not where we WANT to be. In this episode, we're going to talk about the big "Myths of Entrepreneurship," what is actually true and what is not. We share personal experiences from our lives running businesses in the wedding industry and what our choices have cost us. We also share what we're learning and what we're both committed to doing now and in the future so we don't have to pay business tolls that we actually don't want. And finally, we'll share our hope for you. We're in the trenches with you, we're in this together. Resources Mentioned in this Episode: Dare to Lead by Brene Brown (book) The Planner's Vault

158: How to Market Your Wedding Business with a Limited Marketing Budget
GET THE FULL BLOG POST AND SHOW NOTES HERE The Pro Shop Boomerang for Gmail The First Step: I challenge you to determine the real reason you have a limited marketing budget. Ask yourself WHY you have a limited marketing budget and be honest. Why are we asking ourselves this question? Because anyone who owns a business should know that marketing leads to sales and sales are the financial life source of your business. If you know this, then why do you have a limited marketing budget? And, what does “limited” actually mean to you? Does limited mean you truly have $0 to spend on marketing? Or, does it mean $200 a month? Does it mean $50 a month? Pro Tip: One of the most interesting things I’ve found with my clients is that they say they have a “limited marketing budget” but they don’t actually have a real number in mind. You have to do the work, gather the data, and get an actual number for how much you have to spend on marketing each month. If you’re allocating all of your money strategically and it’s all gone because you’re not making a lot yet, then the truthful answer might be you have $0. Or, the real answer might actually be: I have $0 because I CHOOSE to spend money on other things in my business and I’m not prioritizing my marketing because I think posting to Instagram is a marketing strategy.

157: How to Audit Your Wedding Business for a Successful New Year or New Quarter
GET THE FULL AUDIT AND SHOW NOTES HERE Why should we audit our wedding business? I’m not usually one for a lot of “feelings” in business but what I like about assessing how we felt about our business last year or last quarter is how it helps inform us about which parts of our business to focus on improving and which parts went well. Questions to help get you started: Did you feel like you were answering the same questions over and over again to couples, vendors, etc? Did you feel unorganized in any part of your business? Were you constantly “looking” for paperwork, items you need for event days, communication from your couples? Did you absolutely crush it with your onboarding and offboarding processes and want to repeat exactly what you did to continue to build on that success? Now that you’ve taken the time to assess your business, we’re ready to audit our business and make a plan for what we’ll improve upon and what can be maintained because it went well. We’re going to audit 4 key areas of your wedding business: Marketing Administrative (automation, on-boarding, off-boarding, employees, etc) Finances (taxes, bookkeeping, etc) Event Day PRO TIP: You can sit down and perform this audit in one full day. Or, you can audit one section per day and take a full week to perform this audit. Do what works best for your schedule.

About Lindsay and Heather: LINDSAY LONGACRE As a business owner, I dream to cultivate change. My mom started her own business when I was a kid so that she could be there for me and my brother. I didn't realize back then, but since she has passed, I know that I have the same driving force as she had. I am a country music fan. I love to swear. I am on a mission to find a natural deodorant that actually works. I am a gypsy at heart and believe in the power of sage and palo santo. I love to sing out loud but only do it when I am in the car alone because I am too scared. I would make a terrible employee. I eloped. HEATHER HOESCH Being a wedding planner is not just my job, it is who I am. I remember that after the first wedding I did, I knew this is what I wanted to do because it was the first time in my life I felt my work could have a purpose. I am obsessed with baby animals. I have over 30 cousins - they are the best. Lists and whiteboards make me super happy. Dancing to EDM in my apartment puts me in a great mood. I would never say no to a spicy margarita. I have the worst poker face. I para-glided off the top of Aspen Mountain with Lindsay. This episode was originally broadcast on September, 19th, 2018.

131: Balance, Branding and Collaboration with Michelle Durpetti of Michelle Durpetti Events
My guest today is Michelle Durpetti of Michelle Durpetti Events! Michelle wears so many hats including luxury wedding & event planner, hospitality group co-owner, equestrian, speaker and MORE. I was furiously taking notes during this interview because Michelle is full of tangible, raw and practical advice that I didn't want to miss! Today Michelle is spending time with us chatting about balance, branding and the importance of collaboration in our industry! Here's more about Michelle: I founded this company in 2008, founded on the principle that event planners must be good sources of creative ideas combined with practical experience, flexibility, and know-how to manage an event from beginning to end. Since then, I am proud to say that we have been privileged to work with corporate, social and non-profit clients, producing numerous events throughout the country. In 2010, I decided to expand our list of services to include wedding coordination and destination management in addition to event management and creative development. I am the third generation of entrepreneurial spirit and passionately dedicated to the evolution of my company and our perpetual commitment to excellence with each of our clients. I began my career with an internship at Jasculca/Terman & Associates in Chicago, a public relations firm specializing in PR and event management. A highlight of my time there was having the chance to be a part of the team that produced the dedication ceremony for the grand opening of the William J. Clinton presidential library in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was an incredible experience, and the lessons that I learned from it are ones that I still carry with me today, and apply to every event and wedding that I produce. While it may seem unrelated, learning how to produce a live event for a crowd of 30,000 people that was televised live across the globe provided me with a key component to what separates MDE from so many other planning firms out there; logistics management and timing are where the focus is centered. 90: 5 Professional Ways to Respond to Clients Who Ask for a Discount
Thank you to Sudio Sweden for sponsoring today's episode! Use code SHECREATESBUSINESS for 15% off! We've all been there. You see an inquiry pop into your inbox and you're excited because it's another opportunity to serve your ideal client and grow your business! You go through the initial emails, give them information, take them through your amazing client experience and then BOOM, the client or organization asks you for a discount on your services or worse, to "donate" your services to their event/organization/insert their special thing here that would be such great "exposure" for you. Ugh. The anxiety sets in. You don't know how to answer because it's your third request THIS WEEK and these thoughts are swirling in your mind: Are you a bad person for saying no? What if word gets around and EVERYONE starts asking for a discount?! I seriously can't afford to work for free (even if you want to)! Sound familiar? You're not alone girl (no seriously, you're not). When I'm hanging out in Facebook groups for Wedding Pros (and just entrepreneurs in general) I see this question ALL. THE. TIME. "How do you guys deal with people who ask for a discount?" So I sat down and thought about it. How can we deal with these asks? What can we say when the answer is a solid NO but we want to send people away from us with a good impression? In today's' podcast episode I'm giving you FIVE tactical ways you give people a gentle NO when they ask you for a discount on your wedding services or they ask you to donate your wedding services to their organization.

89: Running a True Side Hustle as a Wedding Officiant with Kristin Barber
Thanks to Sudio Sweden for sponsoring this episode! Use code: SHECREATESBUSINESS for 15% off your order! I'm so pleased to welcome Kristin Barber to She Creates Business a Podcast for Wedding Pros. Not only is Kristin the very first wedding officiant on the show (hooray!) she's also the first guest I've had who is truly running her side hustle......as a side hustle! That's right! Kristin isn't burning the midnight oil trying to go full-time as a wedding officiant, in fact, she loves her full-time job at Acuity Scheduling! Kristin just loves people, weddings and accidentally becoming an officiant so she does it for fun......and sometimes for free! My chat with Kristin was so refreshing because it wasn't about how she's killing herself trying to reach full-time officiant status. It was truly just a discussion on how much she LOVES her side-hustle, how she got started as a wedding officiant, the journey she takes her couples through and why she continues to do it (even though she doesn't have to). I know you want to know more about this amazing lady so allow me to share a bit about Kristin here: Kristin Barber is a carb-loving, city-dwelling, social butterfly who knows far too much about the Real Housewives. She lives in Minneapolis and when she's not checking out the new restaurants in town, she's planning her next passport stamp. If there's one thing she loves more than traveling--it would be marrying close friends and perfect strangers. If you want a peek behind the curtains of how to become a wedding officiant or just need some inspo to fall in love with your side-hustle again, today's episode is for you!

(Wedding Planning & Design) with her business partner and co-podcast host, Janna Blaine. Today, she successfully manages all three companies but spends most of her time growing her community of wedding professionals through the Wedpreneur. With a focus on collaboration & community, the Wedpreneur helps wedding professionals of all levels create profitable and sustainable wedding businesses through mastermind groups, masterclasses, online courses, mentoring, and of course, through the power of shared knowledge within the community itself. Mary is a Certified Special Event Professional (CSEP) through the International Live Events Association, where she is also past-Vice Chair of Operations and Corporate Governance. Known for her passion for education and elevating the industry, she also serves on the advisory committee for the Event Management Program at Bow Valley College, and can often be found speaking at industry conferences throughout North America. Thanks to Sudio Sweden for sponsoring this episode. Use Code: SHECREATESBUSINESS for 15% off your order! Today is the grand opening of The Opt In Shop, as well as the relaunch of my website. Who cares about the relaunch of my website? I'm only saying that because I opened up The Opt In Shop along with it, and I am so thrilled to bring this to you! This episode is all about what The Opt-In Shop is and how it's going to actually serve your wedding business. Let me get right into it. If you have heard the word "opt-in" before, and you hear what the name of the shop is, then you're like, "Oh, I hear you, girl. I feel like I know where you're going with this." If not, I'm going to get into that, but The Opt-In Shop is a collection of done-for-you, the operative word here, friends, they are done for you, content upgrades and email list opt-ins for your wedding business. That is right. These email list opt-ins and content upgrades are specifically made for wedding professionals for your couples. These are not for other business owners. This is not for like business building tools. You're not going to find a social media planner. This is for actually our couples, you guys, to put on our wedding business websites and to build our email lists. I created this Opt-In Shop because I needed this Opt In Shop. I have been struggling with building my own email list over at vistaviewevents.com, because I don't have time to create content upgrades or opt-ins, but I have the ideas. Right? Like I have all the ideas in my head, and I know what I need to do. We all know what we need to do. We're not stupid, and we're amazing business owners, but we don't have the time, and we also don't really have the wherewithal to just sit down and create a bunch of things. Right? So I did it for you.

85: Starting and Growing a Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Business with Beth Johnston
I'm thrilled to welcome Beth Johnston to the podcast today. Beth is a travel designer specializing in destination weddings and honeymoons! Today we dig into how Beth started this business after spending more than 30 years in education and the steps she's taking to grow her business using online marketing and social media strategies. Here's Beth to tell you a bit more about herself: My name is Beth and I am an avid traveler, newlywed, retired educator, and mom to a modern-day adult Brady Bunch (heavy on the boys!). I get my kicks out of helping people. In fact, my whole life has been dedicated to helping others. From my years in elementary education (30+), work with organizations that help stray pets, volunteer work and charity work, I find immense joy in giving back and seeing others happy. Travel has always been a part of my life, and experiencing new cultures and new places is what lights me up. The beach has been, and always will be, my happy place. I knew when it was time to walk down the aisle again and marry the love of my life last year, it had to be on a tropical beach. Our own destination wedding ended up being in Punta Cana, and it was an absolute fairytale! Having that incredible experience for myself makes me that much more passionate about helping others create their own dream destination wedding and honeymoon. That is why I became a travel designer specializing in destination weddings and honeymoons!

82: Tip Tuesday: How to Network with Strangers
SUDIO SWEDEN UNBOXING VIDEO Use Code: shecreatesbusiness for 15% off your order! www.sudiosweden.com Well hey there and happy Tuesday. Welcome to She Creates Business, a podcast for wedding pros. This is your host Kinsey Roberts. Well hey there and happy Tuesday. Welcome to She Creates Business, a podcast for wedding pros. This is your host Kinsey Roberts. You may have noticed from the title that I am bringing back Tip Tuesdays, I am. So if you are a new listener to the show, you may not know that over the summer every single Tuesday I brought an episode that's about 15 or 20 minutes long, sometimes less, that is just a quick tip or idea or thought about something I'm trying in my own wedding business. And I got really great feedback about that series, and I enjoyed it myself. It was a really great time, and a really great way for me to just kind of talk out what was going on in my own business and being really transparent about things I was testing out or things that weren't working or things that are working. And I'm bringing it back. I'm going to just keep doing it every single Tuesday. It's no longer a series, it's going to be part of this regular show because I love it and I really appreciate you guys giving me that great feedback about loving those short, snackable size episodes where there's just one thing that you can take away and say, "Hey, I can do something with that." So we're going to kick it off again and today marks the first episode of Tip Tuesday for our kind of fall time period into the ... I'm going to do it through the end of the year and see how it goes. But before we get started with today's tip, I want to tell you that today's podcast is sponsored by Sudio Sweden. And that's not studio with a T, but it's Sudio, which is spelled S-U-D-I-O. Sudio contacted me and said, "Hey, we've listened to your show. We would love for you to grab a couple pairs of headphones from us. See if you like them, and we'd love to sponsor your show and offer your listeners a discount if you're interested in that, and you like the product." And I absolutely was interested because I am a podcaster so having new headphones, trying new headphones, was completely in line with who I am. You guys know that I have a podcast course, and we're all interested ... I know I'm kind of preaching to the choir here when I say, "I always want pretty headphones," right? I'm constantly listening to other podcasts, I'm constantly listening to other audiobooks, webinars, what have you, recording shows. And so a sponsorship from a headphone company was like, yes please. So Sudio, thank you so much for sponsoring today's show. I want you guys to know that you can get 15% off any purchase over at Sudio using the code shecreatesbusiness. You can also just tap your podcast player and use that link in there to make your purchase. And one of the great things about Sudio this month in October is, as I record this, is they are donating 10% of their purchases to breast cancer awareness month. So really appreciate that. Also, I recorded an unboxing video of the two pairs of headphones that I tried. And you can find that over on shecreatesbusinesspodcast.com. Go have a Go have a look-see over there, the link is also in the show notes, so you can see the models that I tried. I tried the Vasa earbuds and then I also tried the Regents, which are over-ear wireless Bluetooth headphones. So take a peek at that and again, Go have a look-see over there, the link is also in the show notes, so you can see the models that I tried. I tried the Vasa earbuds and then I also tried the Regents, which are over-ear wireless Bluetooth headphones. So take a peek at that and again, Sudio, thank you so much. Okay today's quick Tip Tuesday is how to network with strangers. And the impetus for this podcast episode is I just got a networking request, kind of, from somebody that I do not know. I've never had any interaction with them, and their request was kind of strange, I thought. It's not that I don't like to connect with people I don't know, that's really what the entire internet and this podcast has done for me. But I think there's ways to go about it that are easy ways to get a yes from the person that you're asking. I have certainly made these mistakes so don't hear what I'm not saying. I'm not telling you that I am perfect and network well all the time. That's not true. But as I've grown the show and as I've gotten to know other people and as I've kind of gained a following ... I don't want to say that in a weird way, but I just mean as the show has gotten bigger, as it has appeared kind of in the top 200 of the management and marketing category, I've gotten contacted by people like we all do. I know I'm sure you do too. We all get emails from people who want one thing or another or they want to meet us or they want to talk to us. And I love that and I think that's great. I do it every single week. I pitch my own guests. I get pitches as well but honestly I love to find my own guests. And so that's another reason why I think these are really important because my guests are strangers typically before I have them on the show. I mean, a lot of times I'm meeting them before but especially when I first started the show, everybody except for the people I met at Creative At Heart Conference was a stranger. And so I had to approach them in a really unique way so that I wasn't just some random person off the street like, "Hey, can you give me 30 minutes of your life for no reason? Thanks." You know what I mean?

68: Practical Ways to Be Productive in Business + Life with Tonya Dalton
I rarely bring on a guest to the podcast that isn't directly involved in the wedding industry. I had to make an exception for Tonya Dalton though because she's incredible! I had the pleasure of meeting Tonya in person and learning from her at Reina Pomeroy's VIP Intensive in February. I was so inspired by Tonya's business, how she runs her business + her home and more. I knew I had to have her on the show to share with all of us! Tonya Dalton is a productivity expert who started her first business in 2009 working out of her dining room juggling two small kids. By 2011, she had grown the business to the point where her husband could leave corporate America and come work with her. By combining her entrepreneurial spirit with his MBA and marketing experience, they were able to grow a small niche business quickly into something that could support their family. The company continued to flourish, but something was missing. 64: How to Price Your Wedding Services for Profit with Kristin Kaplan
I'm just going to say it, it's time we all collectively said "enough is enough" and start getting serious about pricing our services so we can actually take home a paycheck in our wedding businesses. Kristin Kaplan is my guest today and I'm thrilled she agreed to come on and talk to us about how to logically and realistically price in our wedding businesses! What I love about this interview is there are actual steps you can follow to just do a check up on your biz if you feel like you have pricing under control OR steps to follow if you have no idea why you charge what you charge. This isn't an interview where we hold hands and tell you "oh charge what you're worth." This is an interview where Kristin brings the house down and asks the hard questions: What do you want to make? How much do you need to save for taxes? What are your fixed costs? RUN, don't walk, to grab Kristin's Pricing Workbook. It will change the way you look at money in your business, period.

61: Using HARO in Your Wedding Business for Media Mentions and Backlinks
The other day I was listening to The Blog Millionaire Podcast and he did an episode about HARO. I have a free course about HARO and have chatted about in the Facebook Group, Wedding Business Bosses, so I was immediately interested in the episode. I was surprised to hear the host say you had to have a paid source account on HARO in order to be accepted as a source in mainstream media. This hasn't been my experience at all so I knew I wanted to explore HARO on this podcast. I've been mentioned on Brides.com and SheFinds.com (twice) from pitching to reporters on HARO using my free source account. So, why do I think you should use HARO too? Because it's a great way to gain media mentions and quality backlinks for your wedding Business. I'm excited for you to give HARO a try and if you want step-by-step instructions you can take my Free Course, HARO for Wedding Pros.

40: Shalyce Tyson, Managing a Wedding Planning Business with Other Creative Projects
Thank you to my sponsor The Wedding Business Academy! Click HERE to apply for a FREE Scholarship to this year's program! Shalyce Tyson is a big dreamer and encourager of women. She started her wedding planning company, Sensational Soirees, in 2012 after successfully planning her own wedding and LOVING the planning process. What I love about Shalyce is that, even though her planning company is very successful, she still works a full-time job along with her other creative projects. I know I've touched on that on the podcast before. Just because we have creative businesses and we're entrepreneurs, doesn't mean we all need to "hustle" so we can "QUIT THE 9-5!" Honestly, working a 9-5 can be awesome because you're not putting so much pressure on your creativity. If you haven't read the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, you totally should. It goes into detail about this idea and I think you'll love it. Shalyce offers Full, Partial and Event Management services at Sensational Soirees (in addition to her full-time job) AND she's the Blog Manager for The Mor Community. The Mor Community is a space for creative moms in business whose purpose is to connect creative mompreneurs together in an engaging and supportive atmosphere. You can check out their Facebook Group here. In today's episode, Shalyce gives us practical and tangible advice for how she runs the different facets of her life and why it's important to her to pursue creative projects outside of our business and our full-time job. After 6 years in business Shalyce has finally opened up her schedule for speaking and one-on-one mentoring sessions for wedding planners who have been in business three years or less & are also managing a full-time job, aspiring wedding planners and wedding planners who are also moms. Shalyce has such a heart for this industry and for women, I have no doubt she'll quickly fill up her calendar with happy clients!

39: Ginny Krauss & Kristin Kaplan, What its REALLY like inside a 6-month Group Coaching Program for Wedding Pros
FULL SHOW NOTES & RESOURCES I am thrilled to welcome back Ginny Krauss and Kristin Kaplan to She Creates Business. Back in episode 34 Ginny and Kristin did a Roundtable Q & A where they answered a ton of questions from other wedding pros on things like pricing, ideal client, marketing, social media and so much more. Take a listen to episode 34 after today’s show, I hope you’ll take as many notes as I did. Today’s episode is all about The Wedding Business Academy and what its REALLY like inside of a 6-month group coaching program for wedding pros. These ladies are literally taking us behind the scenes of their signature coaching program so you can make a WELL INFORMED decision on whether or not the program is for you and also just showing you how they run the program. I honestly wish more people would do this. I’ve spent THOUSANDS of dollars on courses and programs and can honestly say I’ve been more than disappointed in a lot them. Not because they were bad courses/programs, but because they were NOT right for me and that was not clear on the sales page. Have you ever felt that way after you purchased a course or program? Enter Here to WIN a FREE SPOT in The Wedding Business Academy I also wish I could have spoken to real human beings who had taken some of the courses I’d purchased and hear what they loved and did love about the program. That’s why I decided to include testimonials from real people at the end of the episode! Elise Luddy and Lina Ruel Flynn were kind enough to record their thoughts on the program and share them with you. Thanks ladies! Thank you to The Wedding Business Academy AND Ginny + Kristin for sponsoring She Creates Business for the month of February. It has truly been my pleasure to have you here and I’m so grateful for your support. Thank you for being such givers to my community and for peeling back the curtain on your program!

38: Jen Glantz, How this Entrepreneur Started her Business with a Craigslist Ad and too Much Wine
Jen Glantz is my special guest on today's podcast and I'm so honored to have her on the show. Jen Glantz is the world’s first professional bridesmaid and founder of Bridesmaid for Hire. She’s the heartbeat behind the website The Things I Learned From, and the author of the Amazon bestselling ebook, All My Friends are Engaged. Her new book, Always a Bridesmaid for Hire, hits shelves TODAY and is now available at Barnes & Noble and Amazon! She can be found in New York City wearing old bridesmaid dresses to the grocery store, on first dates, or double-fisting slices of one-dollar pizza. Jen runs her business with very little help and I absolutely don't say that to make you think that Jen is a superwoman (she is, but that's not the point of this story). I'm telling you that because when you hear the media outlets she's been on, how she got her first traditional book deal and even how she started this business, you'll realize that it doesn't take complicated systems and 10 employees to achieve big goals!

28: 2016 Year in Review
FULL SHOW NOTES Today I'm solo on the podcast to do my 2016 Year in Review. I'm going through my 2016 Powersheets, telling you the goals I set for myself at the beginning of this year, which ones I achieved and which ones I did not achieve (gasp!). I'm also telling you how I shifted my goals in the middle of 2016 and what that meant to the podcast and how that will affect my 2017 goals. This year was a huge year of personal growth for me and one of my biggest lessons was that we are NOT meant to go through life and business alone. People and relationships are SO important to our mental well-being and to our business health. I also learned that asking for help when I need it isn't wrong, there's actually people out there who want to see me (and YOU) succeed! Guys, I am so excited for 2017 and recording this episode and reflecting on 2016 was the perfect way to end the year and drill down on the BIG STUFF I have coming in the new year for the podcast. Thank you so much for your love and support this year, I COULD NOT have done this without you. If you're interested, there's a FUN announcement at the beginning of the show! Take a listen!

21: Abby Herman, Repurposing Content in Your Wedding Business
My guest today is Abby Herman founder of Write Solutions, content marketing, and coaching for small business owners. While Abby isn't "technically" a wedding pro herself, she DOES serve wedding pros through her business and I knew I had to have her on the show to spill her content secrets. Abby has been a freelance writer for almost ten years and has been running her business full-time since 2013. I think we can all agree that between our blogs, social media, live video and the list goes on, that it can be overwhelming creating content for our businesses AND performing our actual jobs as planners, photographers, florists, etc. But we know we have to do it...at least some of it. In today's market, we have to keep an online presence in order to stay competitive. Abby is going to help us with our content strategy today. Abby takes us through what it is like when a wedding pro outsources to her and the services she provides. Then she walks us through what we can do if we're not ready to outsource and prefer to DIY our content plan. And finally, Abby tells us how we can (and should) repurpose our content in multiple ways to get the most mileage out of our message. This was a GREAT conversation and I took away a ton of ideas for repurposing my content in 2017 and I think you will too. Take a listen to the show and come back to the comments so continue the conversation. FULL SHOW NOTES & RESOURCES
