In the evening sending off a guest by the Xunyang river; in the crisp autumn air, maple leaves and silvergrass shiver. The host dismounts his horse and the guest boards the boat; with no lively music to entertain, we raise a sorry toast.Unable to exult together one last time; we part ways in the sallow white field of moonlight.Over the water comes the sound of a pipa; the guest forgets to depart, the host stalls his horse. In the dark we search for the source of the music; the player ceases but hesitates to respond. We pull the boat near, extend an invitation to meet; wine once more flows, lanterns once more lit.Cajoling and convincing, we coax her into sight; from behind her pipa, she emerges into the lightShe plucks out a few notes, melody yet to bloom; at first only emotions without a tune.String by string, notes suffused with reverie; as if speaking of dreams unfulfilled, a life’s memory.Eyes lowered, her hands effortlessly dart; expressing that which weighs on her heart.Gather, twist, press and pluck; playing first “Ni Chang” and then “Liu Yao”.Large strings patter like the pouring rain; small strings tiptoe like a whispered refrain.Patter and tiptoe alternate; like pearls dropping onto a jade plate.Sometimes like the chirp of a golden finch from beneath the flower; sometimes like the sluggish flow of water under the frozen spring. The icy notes crawl slowly to freeze, suspending in the air for a pause. In the air a trace of anguish hangs, silence is better than when the pipa sang.Notes burst out like water out of a shattered glass; like the roar of warhorses and clamour of swords in battle. The piece ends with a strumming across the strings, striking a chord like the tearing of silk.Across the boats there is not a single sound, only the shine of moonlight in the water’s center. With a sigh she tucks the pick between the strings, smoothing down her robes and composing herself. She says, “I spent my girlhood in the capital, living by the end of the Hama District. At thirteen I studied pipa, ranking in the first division of my class. My skill invited the masters’ admiration, my beauty made the loveliest ladies jealous. The wealthy youths fought to shower me with riches, a single tune wrought numerous brocades.Shattering intricate hairpieces by beating rhythms, soiling crimson silk dresses with spilled wine. One year blurs into the next with careless laughter, spring breeze follows autumn moon, years passing unseen. My younger brother was drafted and my auntie passed, as days and nights drifted by my beauty faded. My doorstep was cold and empty, no suitors riding forth; and so this one married, becoming a merchant’s wife.My husband values profit and cares not for separation, last month he went to Fuliang to purchase tea,Leaving me to watch the boat at the rivermouth, surrounded by chilling waters under the lucent moon. Last night I dreamt of my golden youth, and woke to the dried tracks of tears on my face.”I had sighed deeply at the pipa’s haunting sound, and yet lamented ever more at her tale. Two people like us cast to the edge of the world by fate, need not be old friends to share this desolation.I was demoted from the imperial courts last year, to be made magistrate to the decrepit Xunyang Town.In a rural place like this, no music is to be enjoyed, for a year I have not heard songs of the refined instruments.Living in the wet lowlands near the river, wilted reeds and bitter bamboo fill my yard. And from morning to night, what is it I hear? ‘Tis the cuckoo’s wail and the monkeys’ screech. On fine spring mornings and bright autumn evenings, I could only morosely toast myself. There are indeed village folk tunes to be heard, yet they grate my ears with every note.To have heard the sound of your pipa tonight, is to have heard the music of heaven once more. Please, sit down, play one more song; and I will compose for you a poem: the ballade of the pipa. She stood for a long while at my request, then sat back down and strummed the strings with vigour. This was not like any song she had played before, all who listened could not hold their tears. And who among these wept the most? He was a master of drawing bamboo. Strong, proud stalks and glossy leaves came to life under his brush. He was constantly bombarded with commissions from near and far.His friend, Su Shi, was in awe. “How do you do it?” he wondered. “There are so many sections. There must be a trick to the matter.”But Wen Yuke was adamant. “I have no tricks or secret recipe! I only draw the bamboo in my mind’s eye.”Must be some memory, Su Shi thought, as his friend led him into his house. Su Shi stopped short, marvelling at the sight before his eyes. In Wen Yuke’s courtyard were planted oodles and oodles of bamboo of all sizes and shapes! And sure enough, scattered about were just as many drafts of bamboo drawings. This was Wen Yuke’s secret-- he must have spent hours upon hours living with and carefully studying the bamboo, not section by section, but rather as whole entities. Of course Wen Yuke could visualise these bamboo so exceptionally-- how could he not, after so much time spent with them?!Su Shi marvelled, “Indeed, when Yuke draws bamboo, ‘tis the bamboo grown in his heart!”And thus, to have bamboo growing from the heart came to mean that one masters a subject matter, to the point that one has it stored not in their memory but in their heart, and can calmly and expertly answer any question about it.

Drawing Feet for a SnakeOnce upon a time, a group of people got their hands on a jar of good wine, and prepared to enjoy it together. But there were too many people! If all were to share, each would hardly have enough wine to wet their lips! On the other hand, the jar was more than enough for one person -- but who got to drink it?To choose the recipient of the wine, they decided to hold a competition: everyone would draw a snake in the dirt! Whoever finished the drawing first would get to drink the wine. Everyone enthusiastically picked up a stick and began to draw. One person’s stick was a blur of movement, and he finished in the blink of an eye. He triumphantly swept up the jar, ready to drink, when he noticed that none of the other people were even close to finishing. Scoffing, he pronounced arrogantly: “You all are so slow! Look, I can even add feet to my snake, and I’d still beat you!” So saying, he switched the wine to his other hand and proceeded to draw some feet. But before he could finish his now rather funny-looking snake, another person had already finished theirs! They leapt up and snatched the jar from his loose fingers. “Do you even know what snakes look like? If you give the snake feet, then it’s no longer a snake! I win!” they teased with a gleeful smirk. And so while the arrogant man could only watch helplessly, they chugged the whole jar in one go.

The Old Man Loses His Horse, What Fortune May Yet Befall? Once upon a time, there lived in a small border village an old man, whose name was Sai Weng. He raised horses. One day, he found that one of his horses had gone missing! When the neighbors heard, they hurried to comfort him. But Old Man Sai did not need their soothing words. He told them, “I’m not too sad. Who’s to say this incident won’t end fortunately?” A few months later, the horse came back! Not only that, it had even brought with it a robust, spirited mate. The neighbors raucously congratulated Sai Weng. “You were right, sir!” they exclaimed. “Your fortune was indeed returned twofold!” Yet the old man was skeptical. “I wouldn’t be so sure,” he cautioned. “You never know what disaster might befall.” Sure enough, only a few days after that, the Sai Weng’s only son was riding his new horse when it, still unused to its new owners, bucked and threw the boy to the ground, crippling his leg. The neighbors were appalled. “It really was so,” they whispered in horrified awe, “Great misfortune has descended upon his household.” Once again, the old man contradicted their words, saying, again, “You can’t say for sure that this, too, will not end happily.” When the empire was invaded, all the young men in the land were drafted to the front lines, dooming most of them to death. But Sai Weng’s son, because of his crippled leg, was allowed to stay home-- likely saving his life. Thus was born the idiom “The Old Man Loses His Horse”. By itself, this may seem like a very inane line, but when paired with the implied second line, “what fortune may yet befall?”, the meaning is clear: good things and bad things do not last forever; success might herald new problems, but from mistakes may also arise new opportunities.

From tomorrow on, be content. Feed the horses, chop the firewood, travel the world. From tomorrow on, tend to the staples and vegetables..I have a home, that faces the vast ocean, as Spring brings the flowers to full bloom. From tomorrow on, Write to every loved one, to share with them my happiness. Whatever the spectre of fleeting felicity has whispered in my ear, so I shall whisper to every other.Give every river and every mountain a warm, fond name.Strangers, I toast you as well. I wish you a vibrant voyage, I wish you union with your dearest lover, I wish you fortune on this good earth. For me, myself, all I wish is to face the vast ocean, as the breeze of Spring brings the flowers to full bloom.

That beautiful young maiden, rests a river across.I try to follow her up against the flow. The path is laborious and long. I try wading with the current. She rests amidst the river&`&s throng.River reeds grow luscious, white dew and sun have yet to meet. That beautiful young maiden, sits on the riverside peat.I try to follow her up against the flow. The path is precipitous, an onerous trawl. I try wading with the current. On the small island she stalls.River reeds cluster abundant and bright, white dew is not quite gone. That beautiful young maiden, lingers by the river&`&s song.I try to follow her up against the flow. A path of tortuous might. I try wading with the current. A girl on a river isle will alight.

Lush velvetleaf fills the garden,Covered in dew awaiting the sun’s caress.Sustenance spread by sunshine ablaze,Bringing life to all under its glowing gaze.I often dread the arrival of autumn chill,That tosses down those brilliant golden leaves at will.Every river runs east to join the sea,Yet would it ever return westerly?Should youth be squandered in vain,They of weathered age will know regret's pain.
