Tim's Tirade Ep. 1: Rush Remembered... As He Was in the Old Days
Welcome to the first RCL #FeatureFriday! On these special Friday's, RCL hosts and contributors will be dropping special little extras into your podcast feed on whatever is on their minds. That's the fun of it--if you open your favorite podcast app on a Feature Friday, you'll know there's a surprise from us waiting for you!
For the first Feature Friday surprise, we're bringing back a beloved staple from the latter part of the live show era: a segment we called Tim's Tirade. Our friend Tim O'Conner pops in for the feature's podcast debut to provide his unique perspective on the life and death of Rush Limbaugh, including some historical background on why Rush's show was so revolutionary, how Tim helped introduce Rush to the Tallahassee market, and what Rush sounded like in the early days of his talk show--a sound that, sadly, many of his younger listeners were never able to enjoy. Fun fact: Did you know Rush was once known as Jeff Christie, a top 40 DJ in Pittsburgh? Tim has an aircheck!

To Stream or Not to Stream? That is the Question
There is no doubt that the times are changing and, as they do, the way we enjoy radio is changing. This theme has been repeated again and again in discussions inside and outside the industry, including many previous episodes of this podcast. And yet, there are still some who are restistant to the very idea of a radio station streaming its content. In fact, you might be familiar with one of them. So what are the pros and cons of streaming? How important is it in the grand scheme of content delivery? Also, Americans watched events unfold on January 6 that we thought we would never see, as a group of rioters breached the walls of the Capitol and created chaos on the floors of the House and Senate as Congress sought to certify the results of November's election. How did radio do at covering this breaking story, and how did broadcasters react when they learned that the people committing the violence may have been members of their audience? That and more on this week's episode.

2020: A Year in Review
2020 was a lot of things, but it certainly was not uneventful. Like everything else in this crazy world, broadcasting was riddled with seemingly endless twists and turns throughout the year. So, as we say "goodbye" and "good riddance" to the year that was 2020, the RCL crew, along with contributor Tim O'Connor, takes a broad view of the year and discusses what to make of it all. The Secret Life of the Average American Radio Freak... Revealed
Welcome to this special double-episode week! Finally back from his extended journey through the world of medical emergencies, which we hope will be over for a long time, Chris rejoins the show to reminisce about his beginnings as a budding radio freak. As expected, his story leads us to continue the conversation started on Monday and get even nerdier, if that's possible. We also share the best radio that has been getting us through the ups and downs of 2020.

No Bones About It!
Contrary to popular belief, the RCL crew aren't broadcasting experts. We're not industry insiders or professionals. We didn't go to school for this... well, maybe Ashley did, but she's just one. We're not even paid to do this. So what qualifies us to talk about radio on a podcast? Well, nothing really, except that we're a bunch of radio freaks. Radio freaks are a rare breed—often misunderstood, sometimes marginalized. So how did we become these strange specimens of humanity? Preston, Jamie and Ashley share their stories. Chris has been dealing with a lot of health issues and was out this week, which is why this episode is delayed in being published, but don't worry; you'll hear his story on the next episode. Also, Bobby Bones is now possibly the most recognized voice in country radio. But he wasn't always that successful—not in the least. Jamie, Preston and Ashley talk about Bobby's inspiring story and what it teaches us.

I heart continues massive layoffs of on air staff and blames Covid, but is Covid really the culprit? Just in time for the holidays, we break down the pros and cons of the various styles of pledge drives and radiothons. Bonus: Remembering JFK’s Assassination 57 Years Later
Happy Thanksgiving! As we reflect on how thankful we are for the gift of radio, we present to you a special episode to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the assassination of President John F Kennedy, which took place on November 22, 1963. Like stations across the country at that time, KLIF in Dallas, otherwise a top 40 station, was forced to abandon its entire format to cover the news of this horrific event as it took place. Their skill in doing so is nothing short of remarkable. Join us as we take this look back, starting with Chris’s introduction, and remember why we should be thankful every day to have radio available to us.

Something's Missing
Once again, our "News Nuggets" emphasize the stark contrast between big corporate radio and the "little guys." We recap the CMA Awards, which were covered on many stations, but were glaringly absent from others. Jamie introduces us to his return to Sirius XM. If you're listening late at night, in the overnight hours, you may have noticed that something is missing: the overnight DJ. On many stations, that once-faithful all-night companion is gone for good. Does that matter? What is the role of an all-night DJ if not many people are listening during that shift anyway? We discuss, and Chris shares a story that was related to him by one Blair Garner.

Where Have All the DJS Gone?
It has been a bittersweet week in the world of radio. Entercom and Urban One have announced a major trade-off, a few format changes have been announced, and EMF has dropped K-Love Classics with the promise of more and better things in 2021. But then there are the budget cuts at iHeart. In the midst of an economy already laden with increasing unemployment and decreasing resources, iHeart stations across the country have put an axe through their local talent pool. What does this mean, why is it happening, and where do we go from here? Is it really #BecauseCovid or is that just an excuse? We go through the cuts and respond to them. Time to get real.

Heresy, you say? Perhaps, but it's true. Streaming is quickly putting an end to the need for terrestrial radio in its traditional form, and that may not be such a bad thing after all. Jamie shares what he's been learning from his experiment with only listening to streamed radio, and we discuss. Also, Preston gets us ready for November 2, a day of changes for some of the most historic radio stations in the world. Finally, Jamie shows us in so many ways that he's cooler than the rest of us. He wasn't satisfied with merely playing for us his appearance on this week's Kim Komando Show. He also related his many experiences inside a radio studio, the time he suddenly found himself going to dinner with one of the most-loved broadcasters in the Tampa Bay market, the time he was given a very special gift by a broadcaster he loved, and much more. Radio: It's Personal
For many years, when RCL was a live show, we ended each episode by playing Alan Jackson's "Thank God for the Radio." In this beautiful, simple song, Jackson gives thanks for the faithful companion that is with him "on the wrong end of the highway, when the long night has no end." As it is with Alan Jackson, so it is with all of us. Yes, we do our "news nuggets" and give our opinions on the latest goings on in the radio industry. But when you get down to it, radio is personal to us. And, if you think about it, we're sure it's just as personal to you. So, after updating you on the week's news and riffing a bit on heritage call letters, Jamie, Chris and Preston open up and share their stories of personal encounters with the broadcasters they had grown to love. Whether it was Jamie calling into a morning show as one of its DJ's was having a very emotional moment or Chris being completely taken by surprise by seeing at a concert the lady whose voice he woke up to every morning since he could remember hearing a radio, this show was nostalgia at its most emotional. Then, Jamie shares an experiment he is conducting and we talk about possible results. If you want to see a side of some of the RCL crew you may not have known existed, tune into this roller coaster ride of an episode! Note: We dedicate this episode to Laurie DeYoung of WPOC in Baltimore. "Miss Laurie," as she was known by Chris throughout his early childhood, celebrated her 35th anniversary of broadcasting in Baltimore—all on the same station! Why do we single her out? Listen and find out!

Nice Sound If You can Get It
The shake-ups continue across the country, particularly in the lineups of talk stations. This inspires Chris to make up the name of a new format that may or may not exist. The FCC makes news worth noting—and, surprisingly, we like it. Jamie asks us if we've ever seriously thought about the sensitivity of our radio antennas. Admittedly, most of us haven't, but a good discussion ensues anyway. We take up some pretty weighty questions: Of what use is the AM band? Are radio antennas even relevant anymore? Are AM/FM radios quickly becoming a thing of the past? Has the smart speaker taken the place of the surround-sound radio as the listening apparatus of choice? Finally, it's often said that radio is "theatre of the mind." How does this translate to the way we enjoy sports? Lots to think about on this week's episode! Remember: We're giving our Facebook fans a special look behind-the-scenes as we stream our recording session next Monday, October 19, at 3 PM Eastern. Be sure to like Radio Connection Live on Facebook to get notified when we go live!

Then, what is a programming philosophy, and how is it developed? Tim shares his thoughts with the team.

Might As Well Face It, You're Addicted to... What?
EMF is at it again, acquiring more stations to bring under the huge umbrella that is K-Love. iHeart adds one more 24/7 network to their portfolio. "News Nuggets" are making waves in various markets, reminding us once again that all radio is, in the end, local. Also, this week's show is a journey of discovery for the panel, as we confess to you and each other our healthy--or perhaps unhealthy--radio addictions. Finally, we take a closer look at the Cristian radio format, and give our local stations the love they deserve. Make sure to listen carefully for this week's trivia question. Email us if you know the answer!

Of Formats, Festivals and Flamethrowers: RCL for the Week of 9-21-20
This week, a well-executed format change to a very well-executed format in Atlanta inspires the team to talk about what makes a good format change--and, for that matter, what makes a good format. We de-brief the iHeart Music Festival and the ACM Awards, both of which were presented very differently, for better or for worse. Our old friends at iHeart and Cumulus become the topic of conversation yet again as we talk about how similar they really are. The trivia question from last week's podcast is answered and a new one is asked. If you know the answer, email rclthepodcast@gmail.com!

Oh Entercom, What Have You Done?: Radio Connection Live for the Week of September 16, 2020
This week we remember the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks by listening to a powerful montage of New York City's radio landscape as stations there tried to bring to their listeners events that their own broadcasters were struggling to grapple with. The past week has been filled with "news nuggets," and we break them all down. We then discuss our favorite innovations in radio, pro and con. Be sure to listen till the end to hear Chris's radio trivia question! If you know the answer, email us!

Bonus: Salem, Charlie Kirk, and... What About Prager?
Chris rides solo on this mini-episode about a breaking story involving one of his favorite syndicators: the Salem Radio Network. They've added a new show to their lineup, but its time slot conflicts directly with one of their own shows--which, by the way, is arguably the most popular show on that network. Chris offers some listener perspective and asks, "What's going on?" Plus, a postscript on a breaking story from Baltimore with comments that only a Marylander can provide. Chris is out of town next week, but he just couldn't stay away from the mic while these stories were being tweeted out. So, in the words of Salem's newest talk show host, "Buckle up, everybody; here we go!"
