Client Question – What helps to calm your nerves before speaking? – 117
Have you ever stopped to think about what success looks like to you?
This is a question I always ask my clients.
Whether developing their confident communication skills to deliver presentations, give compelling talks, be successful at job interviews, and much more.
Although they have practiced their presentation, put the finishing touches on their talk or interview prep,
when it comes to the 'big day' itself, they sometimes find themselves so overwhelmed with nerves,
that they forget all the good techniques they've been practising and don't feel confident.
Some of my clients asked, “What can I do about this?”
Well, in response to this I have created a visualisation exercise which can help.
If you're preparing for an important event and feel that a little confidence boost will help,
allow me to guide you through this visualisation exercise so that you feel more confident.
In today’s episode I answer this client question: "What helps to calm your nerves before speaking?".

How to give yourself the best chance of public speaking and presenting success – 105
When it comes to preparing for your next talk or presentation.
I believe there’s two things you can do to give yourself the best chance of success.
One of them will probably sound obvious to you.
If you do it, you will sound more polished.
And your audience will find your message clearer and easier to understand.
The second one might feel less obvious, but is equally important.
Because it will help your audience to feel more engaged with what you are saying.
And help them to connect with you and your message.
In today's episode I share with you how to give yourself the best chance of public speaking and presenting success.
* The first technique is - ‘If you want to be a success; Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse’
* The second technique is - ‘As a speaker you should always seek to answer this question from your audience: “What’s in it for me”?’

Speaking with confidence in meetings – 104
Does the thought of speaking up in meetings fill you with dread?
Do you keep quiet, never contributing for fear of being judged?
If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. Many people find meetings a daunting experience and, as a result, end up staying silent.
Though this may feel like the safe option, I bet it knocks your confidence and it could even have a negative impact on your career.
If you sit at the side-lines, you’ll remain invisible to your colleagues, including your boss, which could mean you’re overlooked when it comes to being offered exciting opportunities.
In today’s episode I explore speaking with confidence in meetings.

Mindfulness technique to use when feeling anxious before presenting – 103
I’m sure you can look back at a presentation you’ve delivered, and recall in the build up to it, how it made you feel.
Or perhaps you’re looking ahead to delivering your next presentation, and when you do this, it makes you feel a certain way too.
Everyone feels differently in the build up to a presentation, and whether you're feeling excited, nervous or a bit of both,
it’s important not to get caught up in how you’re feeling.
Because this will take up all your energy and focus which you should be putting into preparing for the presentation itself.
Which can increase the nerves and anxiety around the big day.
And this gets in the way of you sharing your message as well as you want to.
So finding a place of balance so that you don’t caught up in how you are feeling is important.
I believe this is where a technique called “Mindfulness” can help.
Because it's an effective way of calming the mind, controlling the nerves, and can help you find a place of balance.
Which can help support you delivering your presentation on the day itself.
In today’s episode I share a mindfulness technique to use when feeling anxious before presenting.

Celebrating one hundred episodes and busting common public speaking myths – 100
Welcome to episode 100 of Public Speaking with me David Murray.
A BIG thank you to YOU my listeners for tuning into the show.
When I launched Public Speaking with David Murray, this was my intention.
As someone who was previously anxious about speaking in public,
I wanted to share the tools and techniques, that I have discovered and applied throughout my own confident communication journey.
These have taken me from feeling anxious about speaking in public and onto the TEDx talk stage multiple times.
I wanted to share them in order to enable YOU to communicate with confidence.
Another aspect of this show is, I interview special guests who share their own stories and talk about how communication shapes what they do and how they do it.
It’s been great to explore their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities that present themselves when speaking in public.
For many, the idea of communicating to groups of people can be scary.
This is often because we believe the myths we have told ourselves that it is going to be a negative experience.
But the truth is, when you have the skills and techniques that I explore with clients in your back pocket,
speaking in public is much more likely to be a positive experience.
With this in mind, I’ve carefully selected some stand-out moments from my guest interviews, where they bust some common public speaking myths.
In today’s episode I'm celebrating one hundred episodes and busting common public speaking myths.

Overcoming last minute nerves before online or face to face presentations – 099
Before presenting at work, sharing a talk on stage or communicating an important message online, it’s natural to feel nervous.

Why it’s good to learn the rules of public speaking and then break them – 098
If you’ve listened to my show regularly you would have heard lots of tools and techniques to help you communicate with confidence.
I really hope you’ve found them useful.
Whether that be to communicate more effectively at work, deliver better presentations, or be more confident when speaking in public.
In Episode 15 - I shared how using a technique called the ‘Power of 3’ can help you to stand out from the crowd.
In Episode 14 - I showed how using the ‘Power of the pause’, before presenting or public speaking can help you feel confident and connect with your audience.
In Episode 54 - I shared why you should avoid turning your back on your audience when presenting.
It really is worth using these techniques whenever sharing your message.
However, when you feel comfortable and confident in using any of the techniques you hear on this show,
I would like to invite you to experiment with them, mix things up and see what works well for you and what doesn't.
This will help you to become an even more confident and effective speaker.
In today’s episode I share why it's good to learn the rules of public speaking and then break them.

Communicate with confidence using non-verbal communication skills – 096
Whenever you communicate, are you just using your words to get your point across?
Whether you are having a conversation with one person, or sharing a message with many,
so much of what you say isn’t just through your words, but also how you are saying it.
This is through your non-verbal communication skills, or in other words, your body language.
That’s why in today’s episode I share with you two techniques to help you communicate with confidence using non-verbal communication skills.
* The first technique is ‘How to make eye contact even if you don’t like doing it’.
* The second technique is ‘Communicate with confidence using your body language’.

Communicate with confidence online – making your point – 095
When you are on a video conference call, attending virtual events, or connecting with people online.
It can be difficult to get your point across in the same way as you would be able to if you were meeting in person.
Looking into the camera or the screen on your computer.
Can make you feel detached from your audience, your listeners.
The people with whom you want to connect.
I wonder if you’ll agree it’s difficult to feel the same sense of connection over video conference calls.
That you would feel when you are seeing people in person.
When you think about all the confident communication skills you would use, when you’re meeting face to face.
Like eye contact, having an open posture and speaking clearly and confidently.
These can feel more challenging for you to do, when you don’t feel that same sense of connection.
As you can feel somewhat detached when you are sat at your computer.
Looking into the camera and at the faces you see on your computer screen.
Which means it can be more of a challenge to get your voice heard.
And see your message land and connect with those that you want it to.
That's why in today’s episode I share how to communicate with confidence online - making your point.

Mindfulness technique to use when you feel overwhelmed before public speaking – 089
Public speaking can be scary.
Even the most experienced public speakers will tell you that they get nervous before giving a talk.
But if you're not careful, the nerves can take over and make you feel unprepared and even cause you to panic.
Which means you can rush through your talk and don’t feel you did a good enough job.
This can be even more of a problem if you are just starting out in your public speaking journey.
Because the feeling of anxiety could be so great that you avoid the opportunity to speak altogether.
Which obviously isn’t great, because you’ll never develop as a public speaker.
So what can you do about it?
I believe a technique called “Mindfulness” can help.
Because it’s an effective way of calming the mind, controlling the nerves, particularly if you’re feeling nervous about the upcoming public speaking opportunity.
In today’s episode I share a mindfulness technique to use when you feel overwhelmed before public speaking.

As you wait for your opportunity to take to the stage, what are you doing?
Are you in your head, rehearsing what to say?
Wondering if your words will connect with your audience?
Or, if you want to guarantee you WILL connect with your audience, from your opening line, to your closing statement.
I wonder if I can invite you to try this instead...

In focus! Developing listening skills to be a more effective communicator – 084
“When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.”
It was none other than The Dalai Lama who shared this brilliant piece of wisdom.
Think about that for a moment.
If you’re always doing the talking, you’re never hearing a different perspective on things.
Think about conversations you’ve had with friends or colleagues at work.
Are you the one who always doing the talking?
How often are you fully listening to what people are saying?
The ability to listen and fully listen, is an important communication skill.
In today's episode I'm speaking with a breast cancer surgeon who talks about developing listening skills to be a more effective communicator.

Client question – What should I do if I feel nervous before public speaking and presenting? – 078
Lots of clients I have worked with have built up a great arsenal of tools and skills in public speaking and presenting.

However, sometimes they find themselves so overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety or pressure before they are going to deliver an important speech or presentation, that they forget all the good things they know.
This means they rush through their speech or presentation and don’t feel they did a good enough job.
Some of my clients were asking me, “What can they do about it?”
So in response to that, I have made this guided mindfulness exercise.
If you find yourself getting a little worked up before sharing a message with lots of people
Or just when you are communicating with a few and ask yourself, "What can I do about it?",
Try this mindfulness exercise before delivering your next speech or presentation.
In today’s episode I answer this client question: “What should I do if I feel nervous before public speaking and presenting?”.

Three techniques to help you communicate with confidence during online events – 077
When you think about all the confident communication skills you would use, when you're meeting face to face.
In today's episode I'm going to share with you three techniques to help you communicate with confidence during online events, so your voice is heard.

Whenever you communicate, are you just using your words to get your point across?

Through your non verbal communication skills, or in other words... your body language.

How to communicate with confidence on video conference calls – 068
I think we can all agree that we are living through unusual times, when we are being encouraged to stay at home. Which means we are having to change the way we interact with our colleagues, our customers, and even friends and family.
This means we are setting up meetings, running workshops and having conversations online, using some kind of video conferencing tool. And I'm sure you’ll agree that video calls feel very different to how we’re used to doing things.
Where we would normally be meeting face to face. We’re now sitting at home, with our computers, looking into a camera and staring at the faces we see on the screen. And not everybody feels comfortable doing this. Because it doesn’t feel natural.
In today's episode I share with you a technique to help you to communicate with confidence when you're having conversations on video conference calls. And it's all about eye contact!

Speak UP at work! How to speak up in meetings – 065
Does the thought of speaking up in meetings fill you with dread?
Do you keep quiet, never contributing for fear of being judged?
You’re not alone, many people find meetings a daunting experience and, as a result, end up staying silent.
Though this may feel like the safe option, it could be having a negative impact on your career.
If you sit at the side-lines, you’ll remain invisible to your colleagues, including your boss, which could mean you’re overlooked when it comes to being offered exciting opportunities.
In today's podcast I share my tips to help you feel confident enough to contribute in meetings and make sure people start paying attention to what you have to say.
You can’t control how other people will respond to what you say, and you’re never going to be able to please everyone.
What you can control is how you present yourself, and whether you take opportunities to speak up or let them pass you by.

Send your audience to sleep by ‘Facing away’ from them when presenting – 054
Imagine you are delivering a presentation at work and you are using slides.
What is the one thing you can do that will guarantee your colleagues will either fall asleep or be rushing to the exit door?
It is turning your back to them as you speak and reading directly from your presentation slides.
Colleagues love it when you face them. Allow your audience to read from the presentation slides as you talk and fill in any gaps to add context to the words on the screen.
By facing your audience, they will will feel connected to you and can look them in the eyes as you emphasise an important message.
But if your back is turned and you are facing away from them, how can they feel connected to you?
Remember 60% of what we say is through our non-verbal communication.
So if you want to turn off your audience and send them to sleep, keep reading from the slides and have your body turned away from them.
If you don’t want to turn them off and want to feel confident and engage with them, speak to your audience and not the slides, they will thank you for it.

Avoid sending your audience to sleep by using ‘Vocal Variety’ – 053
Imagine you are at work and seeing a colleague delivering a presentation.
Imagine listening to that presentation and the speaker's voice stays fixed at the same tone and volume throughout.
They sound bored which means you will feel bored too!
If they aren’t sounding enthusiastic about what they are saying, why should you be enthusiastic to listen?
What if this is you? What should you do when you have your opportunity to deliver your message?
Be willing to play with tone to give your listeners some joy.
If YOU ask a question, add emphasis on the YOU. The listener will feel you are talking to them?
e.g. don’t say “what would you do?’, say “what would YOU do?”
If you are using words like; passion, excitement, adventure…. Match your tone and volume with how the words are intended to make the listener feel. Say "PASSION, EXCITEMENT, ADVENTURE..."
If you play with vocal variety, you will sound more captivating, your message will be remembered and most importantly, you won't send your audience to sleep!

It is called 'getting your volume and pace, just right'!.
When delivering a presentation at work, begin by asking your audience if they can “hear you at the back”. Then you can adjust your volume accordingly.
Pace yourself. Use pauses for dramatic effect or to give yourself the opportunity to gather your thoughts. Take a sip of water...breathe.

Make this ‘Mindfulness’ exercise part of your pre-speech and presentation routine – 045
Lots of clients I have worked with have built up a great arsenal of tools and skills in public speaking and presenting.
However, sometimes they find themselves so overwhelmed with nerves, anxiety or pressure before they are going to deliver an important speech or presentation, that they forget all the good things they know.
This means they rush through their speech or presentation and don't feel they did a good enough job.
So in response to that, I have made this short guided mindfulness meditation. If you find yourself getting a little worked up before sharing or communicating a message with people, try this mindfulness exercise before delivering your next speech or presentation.

Don’t let ‘Using Notes’ be an obstruction or a distraction – 039

Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
Avoid using large pieces of paper on which you have written your speech in full. This creates an obstruction between you and the lister and is distracting for you and them.
Instead use record/index cards which fit in the palm of your hand. And on them write bullet point notes to guide you to deliver your message with confidence.

Two techniques you must use in your presentations to ‘Start and End strong’ – 038
In this episode I share with you two techniques that you must incorporate into your next speech, presentation or pitch so that you 'Start and End strong'
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique 'Start like this and people will want to listen'.
You want people to listen when you have put hard work into preparing your speech, or that work presentation, or even your big pitch. Am I right?
You are going to want to jump straight in and start speaking, but if you do, the listener won’t necessarily be ready to listen.
Instead, follow my 3 steps to begin your speeches, presentations & pitches, and your listener will want to hear what you have to say:
1. Start with a pause,
2. Ask your listeners a question or ask them to imagine something,
3. Pause again.
I call the second technique ‘Call to Action’.
A call to action can be added at the end of your speech and is a way of inviting your audience to take action as a consequence of the message you have delivered. This means the audience can take away positive action and helps them to remember your speech.

Two techniques to show you have ‘Practiced and Prepared’ your speech – 037
In this episode I share with you two techniques that will prove to yourself and your listener that you have practiced and prepared your speech.
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique 'Lose the filler words'.
Have you ever noticed how speakers can sometimes use filler words like “ers” and “ums”?
Or perhaps you have used them yourself when delivering a speech or presentation? They are likely to appear whilst speaking when we are thinking of what to say next or trying to decide between alternative ways of expressing a point. They essentially fill the gaps in our speech whilst we are pondering our next words.
Simply using a PAUSE can help remove those “ers” and “ums” with ease.
I call the second technique ‘Tying a bow’.
We all like gifts, don’t we?
Well, here is a clever little technique for you to use when preparing to give your next talk.
Give your listener a gift by ‘tying a bow’ over your talk. You do this by opening and ending with the same statement.
This is a great way to show you have clearly thought about the structure of your talk and it will give it more impact.

Two techniques that make you ‘Feel like an expert that people want to hear’ – 034
In this episode I share with you two techniques that will make you feel like an expert that people want to hear.
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique ‘Talk about YOU'.
You want to stand up and speak but you are worried you have nothing to talk about.
Never struggle to find an idea to talk about again by simply talking about what you know best, YOU!
People want to hear stories about the experiences of others. Never struggle for an idea again by simply speaking about YOU!
I call the second technique ‘Tell a story’.
Remember how much you loved hearing stories when you were younger?
Recall how you were captivated by the words that painted pictures and took you to new and exciting worlds within your imagination?
By incorporating stories into your presentations or speeches, you create a deeper connection with the listener. Stories offer a way for us to see things from a different perspective and are a powerful way to get your point across.

Two techniques that make you ‘Sound like public speaking expert’ – 033
In this episode I share with two techniques to add to your speeches and presentations that will show others you are a public speaking expert.
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique ‘Power of 3’. If you can think of an inspirational speaker, they will use the power of 3 in their speeches.
This is because it is an effective way to A: Structure your speeches (think start/middle/end), B: Share information in a way they helps you and the audience recall your message (e.g. my favourite foods are: 1. Pasta, 2. Fish, 3. Pineapple). C: Makes your speech sound more structured, engaging and attractive from the viewpoint of the listener.
I call the second technique 'Alliteration'. This is where you combine two or more words in your speech that start in the same way. For example: ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Sweet Song’, ‘Blue Bird’.
It is easy to add alliteration into your speeches and feels like music to the ears of the listener, because your speech will sound more structured, fun and engaging.

Two brilliant ways to ‘Open your speech’ – 029
In this episode I share with you two brilliant ways to open your next speech or presentation.
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique 'The power of the pause'. When you are feeling a bit nervous before speaking, it is natural to want to get started as quickly as possible and get it over and done with. But if you do, you are likely to rush and lose your way and will feel less confident.
I recommend before speaking, pause for a count of 4 or 6 breaths. This will give you an opportunity to get used to your surroundings, gather your thoughts and give you a confidence boost before speaking.
I call the second technique 'Asking a question'. You don’t have long to gain a connection with your audience. The opening of your speech has to engage them in a way that connects with their own personal experience. If you do this, then they will stay with you until the end of your speech and you will be remembered.
A brilliant way of engaging your audience is to open your speech with a question. Ask something of your audience and give them time to think about their own experience.

Two things to remember if you ‘Forget your words’ – 027
If you ever worry that you won't be able to remember all of your speech and forget your words, this episode is here to help you with two great techniques.
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique 'What to do if you forget your words'. It is something that can happen to all of us when we are standing in front of an audience. You get to a point in your speech but suddenly, you cannot remember what to say next. If this happens you should avoid looking at the ceiling or floor and instead maintain eye contact with your audience and therefore your connection with them. This will give you time to remember what you want to say next.
I call the second technique 'The audience cannot read your mind’. And that's the secret. If you do miss out a bit of your speech, or jump ahead a little. The audience will never know. So, simply pause... and continue.

Two things you should do when ‘Preparing your talk’ – 026
In this episode I share with you two tips that will help you when you are preparing for your next talk or even presentation at work.
I call the first tip 'KISS'. When preparing your material always have your audience (the listener) in mind. You want to ensure your message is received loud and clear. You do this by removing any jargon or longer words from your content which may be difficult for the audience to understand. So think 'KISS' (Keep It Super Simple) when preparing your pitches, presentations and talks.
I call the second tip 'Keeping to time'. Would you believe that time can be your biggest obstacle to delivering effective pitches, presentations and speeches. This is because there will always be an expectation that you deliver them within a specified time. If you run out of time, it is likely you will be asked to stop and you won't be able to finish.
What do you do to make sure you don't run out of time and ruin all your hard work? Have a stopwatch ready and time yourself when practicing.

Two ways to make you ‘Look and Feel confident’ – 025
In this episode I share with you two techniques that will help you look and feel confident when delivering speeches and presentations.
Subscribe to my newsletter and receive monthly tips and techniques to help you speak and communicate with confidence. Please click me: http://eepurl.com/gj6Sb9.
I call the first technique 'Calming your Nerves' and you can use this in your preparation before the big event. I guide you through an exercise where you focus on breathing and count your breaths. This can help you feel calm, centred and ready to deliver confident speeches and presentations.
I call the second technique 'Confident Posture' and you can use this whilst you are delivering your speech or presentation. By simply having your hands out to your front and side, this will give you the appearance of someone who believes in what they are saying and is worth listening to.
Try to avoid folding your arms, having your hands in your pockets and keeping your hands behind your back. The more open and confident your posture looks, the more confident you will feel.
