President Barnes preaches on Ephesians 2:1-10 | December 5, 2022
Seminary Chapel
Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10
Homily: "But God..."
In the second chapter of Ephesians, Paul offers the testimony of Christian community. “You were dead…” he begins. And in spite of our tendency to crawl back in the tombs, God has made us fully alive in Christ, and will never settle for anything less than a fully alive Church.

President Barnes preaches on John 6:1-14 | November 17, 2022
Seminary Chapel
Scripture: John 6:1-14
The most striking thing about John’s account of the feeding of the 5,000 is that Jesus took the five loaves of bread, which seemed so meager compared to thousands of hungry people before him, and he gave thanks for what he held. Then the miracle could begin. While our resources are always so meager in the face of the challenges we confront, we are never going to see anything miraculous unless with begin with thanksgiving.

The Future of American Democracy: The Challenge of Polarization
October 13, 2022
The Future of American Democracy: The Challenge of Polarization
Where Americans once saw neighbors, they now see enemies. Increasingly, Republicans and Democrats alike see members of the other party as not just wrong on key issues, but — according to the Pew Research Center — as immoral, dishonest, closed-minded, and a threat to the nation’s well-being. The reverberations of extreme polarization are felt far from the realm of formal politics, in schools and churches and local communities where some seem ready to give up entirely on the age-old art of persuasion. How did we get so divided? And where do we go from here?
This panel was moderated by Heath Carter, associate professor of American Christianity at Princeton Seminary, featuring panelists Jane Coaston, columnist for The New York Times and host of The Argument; Peter Meijer, Republican congressman representing Michigan’s 3rd district since 2021; and Symone D. Sanders-Townsend, former chief spokesperson for the Vice President of the United States.

President Barnes preaches on Acts 9:10-19 | November 3, 2022
Seminary Chapel
Scripture: Acts 9:10-19
This follows the story of the conversion of Saul with the story of the conversion of the church, which was hiding in fear of Saul the persecutor. It was time for the church to stop living in fear and reach out in ministry to thing that made it most afraid. Hiding is a sin, and some have suggested that since the time of Adam and Even we hide in order to sin and separate ourselves from God. To whom do you need to reach out and say, “Brother Saul’?

President Barnes preaches on Acts 9:1-9 | October 27, 2022
Seminary Chapel
Scripture: Acts 9:1-9
This is the story of the conversion of Saul, who was so certain that he knew God and was engaged in a righteous mission before Jesus was revealed to him. So he was wrong about God. We are not able to serve the mission of Christ until we acknowledge that is more to God than we know. This discovery is so overwhelming that it changes everything. We might as well get a new name, as Paul did.

Jesus and Our Insatiable Thirst
The purpose of this brief series of homilies on the Woman at the Well is to help us move beyond thinking about Jesus’ encounter with a Samaritan woman who had a difficult time with relationships, to consider our own deep thirst for something more. This is striking because we’re supposed to know the Jesus is the living water, and yet we continue to search for something more…
Scripture: John 4:27-30, 39-42
The way John writes the gospel, “Just then” the disciples return to encounter this amazingly profound declaration about Jesus as the Messiah, and their response is to be concerned that he is talking to a woman. (??!!??) Like the worship wars this preoccupation with social norms helps us stay distracted from God’s argument with us – that we keep trying to satisfy our thirst with things other than the Messiah who knows us. The core of the woman’s testimony to Jesus' messianic status was that he told her everything she had done. We can only be saved by the only one who really knows us and is dying to love us.

Scripture: John 4:19-26
When Jesus gets too close to the thirsty woman’s soul, she quickly changes the subject by bringing up what is the equivalent of the ancient worship wars. Jesus stays with this distraction and uses it as an opportunity to provide profound theology about worshiping in spirit and truth. And then returns to presenting himself as Messiah. Worshiping in spirit and truth can only be understood in the context of living water for our insatiable thirst.

Scripture: John 4:1-6
It is striking that Jesus leaves Judea and heads to Galilee because the word is out that he is responsible for more baptisms than John the Baptist. Most of us don’t leave our work because we are just too successful at it. But Jesus refused to allow others to set his mission. (See vs. 34.) It is also striking that on the way back to Galilee he “had to” pass through Samaria, where the righteous Jews avoided going. But going to the unrighteous is the work of the Righteous One. It is also striking that Jesus stops at a well because he is tired. Can the Savior get tired?

Scripture: Joshua 4:1-7
Homily: “Remembering to Move Ahead”
God told Joshua to create a monument of twelve stones taken from the Jordon River crossing to give the people a memory of God’s faithfulness. But the people had just entered the Promised Land, and all of the challenges of moving into it still lay ahead. At the beginning of a new academic year we remember this is not the beginning of God’s faithfulness. We cannot find the courage to take on the challenges of today or tomorrow without sacred memories of the holy grace that has brought us this far.

Scripture: Mark 16:1-8
The shorter, and probably original, ending of Mark concludes with the women fleeing from the tomb, “for terror and amazement had seized them.” What kind of ending is this to a gospel? It bothered the early church so much they added longer endings to it. But what if the Gospel is supposed to be unfinished? What if it is up to us to do that with our belief in the words of the angel who said the risen Jesus has gone on ahead of us?

After Jesus gives his disciples the bread and cup as a means of communing with him, an argument breaks out among them about who is the greatest. We commune with Jesus also as servants.

The Temptation to be Less Than Human
This is a three-week Lenten series of homilies on the temptation of Christ. It is significant that all three of these temptations came immediately after Jesus’ baptism, where he identified with us, and heaven declared that he was “the Beloved, with whom God is well pleased.” As the Son of Humanity, Jesus’ temptations depict the essence of our temptations. All of them make us question if we are truly the beloved of God.
Scripture: Matthew 4:8-11
“The Temptation to Make a Deal with the Devil”
It is striking that the devil doesn’t tempt Jesus with things like health or riches. He tempts him with the kingdoms of the world, which is exactly what the Son of God came to redeem. The greatest temptations are not about ends but means. We are told we can accomplish even our spiritual goals if we just make a deal with the devil.

Scripture: Matthew 4:5-7
“The Temptation to be Certain”
The devil uses scripture to tempt Jesus to jump from a high peak in order to make God send angels to rescue him, and prove that he was the beloved. Certainty doesn’t make us have faith. To the contrary, it makes no room for faith. And we can only enjoy the love of God by faith.

Jesus is a rough recruiter. Three people offer to follow Jesus, and he cautions each of them about the high cost of following him. Jesus is moving ahead, and to follow him inevitably means leaving something cherished behind. But we cannot make it to a new future without traveling lightly. So learning to surrender is one of our most critical spiritual disciplines.

The prophet tells the exiles not to be anxious about how long their detour in Babylon would last. Instead, they were called to seek the welfare of the city where they were, which meant settling in, building houses, planting gardens, and raising families. We can only do that if we believe in God’s promise of “a future filled with hope.”

Seminary Chapel
Scripture: Mark 5:25-34
A woman in need of healing interrupts Jesus as he is on his way to heal the daughter of Jairus who is a ruler of the synagogue. A great crowd was following Jesus to see him heal the ruler’s daughter who is “at the point of death.” But Jesus refuses to hurry, and stops the parade to deal with the concerns of a woman with a chronic condition. Jesus never hurries. That frustrates us when we are anxious, like Jairus and the crowd. But it is the hope of those lost in the crowd.

Rev. Dr. Eunbee Ham | Workshop | 2022 Mental Health and Asian Americans Conference
January 24, 2022 | Mental Health and Asian Americans: Contexts and Strategies for Faith Leaders
Workshop: "Growing Together: Cultivating Healthy Communities Through Conflict Resolution"
Conflict can be a healthy and essential part of community growth, but it takes time, training, and practice to handle conflict in ways that help deepen interpersonal empathy and understanding. Particularly during the pandemic when stress levels are high, divisions are rampant, and emotional coping skills are strained, conflicts can have a huge impact on our mental health and quality of life. In this workshop, Rev. Dr. Eunbee Ham draws on her training as a Marriage and Family Therapist and pastoral experience navigating conflict from an antiracist lens to help participants identify successful conflict resolution tools and skills, cultivate antiracist values intentionally in conflict resolution processes, and practice ways to utilize conflict resolution skills in real life situations.

Dr. Joel Jin | Workshop | 2022 Mental Health and Asian Americans Conference
January 24, 2022 | Mental Health and Asian Americans: Contexts and Strategies for Faith Leaders
Workshop: "Pastoring a Congregation of Whole People, Not Perfect People"
Asian American Christians can struggle with the experience of not feeling good enough. They perceive a gap between where they ideally ought to be and where they actually are. Across their personal, professional, and even spiritual lives, there is a tendency to expect perfection yet fall short of it. In turn, we might present ourselves as perfect, never offering ourselves the opportunity for care and healing. Although setting standards for ourselves is healthy, we are burdened when we feel like we constantly fall short of them. Dr. Jin’s workshop equips church leaders to support Asian American Christians in becoming more whole people, not perfect people. We learn about different types of perfectionism and how this applies to Asian American Christians. We discuss practical strategies from the pulpit to pastoral counseling.

President Barnes Preaches on Luke 15:25-32 | November 18, 2021
Miller Chapel
Scripture: Luke 15:25-32
… we had to celebrate and rejoice
The parable ends with an invitation for the elder brother to join in the celebration and joy, but we don’t know if he finally chose to repent of his sense of righteous anger and do that. So, it is left to the current, self-righteous, elder siblings to complete the story. Ironically, we pride ourselves on the carefulness of our choices, but in in the end the only choice that matters is entering into the joyful fellowship that is built only upon God’s choice to be merciful.

Scripture: Luke 15:25-32
… you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours
The Apostle Paul said we have already received every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. But we keep trying to earn a blessing, which can only be given. If there is a measure to spirituality, it is gratitude because only the grateful are paying attention to the two-handed giving of God. And only those who know they are blessed can be a blessing.

Miller Chapel
Scripture: Luke 15:25-32
… I have worked for you like a slave
We try to save ourselves with hard work and responsible choices, but that enslaves us to being our own taskmasters. And we are merciless taskmasters. There is no justice in the father’s mercy to the prodigal, which makes the elder brother a little crazy. But devoting your life to getting what you deserve only leads to anxiety. And that is why the righteous also need salvation.

Scripture: Luke 15:25-32
Now his elder son was in the field…
In the church, the elder siblings are those who are hardworking, careful to follow the rules, and who never ran away from God. So the “I once was lost, but now am found” message is a stretch for them. But the point of the parable is not be the one who was right and careful. The point is to get into the outstretched arms of the parent and enter the celebration.

Before the Hebrews crossed the Jordan River, the Lord told them to select six cities that will be places of refuge for fugitives who are on the run. Scripture: Numbers 11:4-6, 13-20
The rabble were on the journey with the Hebrews through the wilderness, but they didn’t believe in the journey, the leadership, or the dream of a Promised Land. That’s because they also didn’t believe in God. So their tolerance for hardship was low and their capacity for complaint was high. But the most dangerous rabble are the voices of disbelief within our own hearts.

Scripture: Numbers 9:15-17
The point of being in the wilderness is not really to make progress, but to learn to walk by faith. So God led the Hebrews in a cloud. It feels like the world has been in the wilderness through the long pandemic journey. And now the often-repeated questions are, “What did we learn?” How are we different?” These questions are looking for progress on the journey. Maybe the better question is, “Did we learn to trust?”

President Barnes preaches on John 13:1-14 | April 1, 2021
Miller Chapel
Maundy Thursday
John 13:1-14
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 13:14
It is not a reassuring or comforting image to find our Lord and Teacher, who we worship, washing the dirt off of our feet. It disturbs our notions of holiness. But it also transforms them. We find holiness by reaching up but by reaching down. As disciples of a foot washer, we are never more than foot washer trainees.

President Barnes preaches on Luke 24: 32-35 | March 25, 2021
Miller Chapel
Lenten Series on the Road to Emmaus
Scripture: Luke 24:32-35
Were not our hearts burning within us? 24:32
Renewed in the vision that the risen Christ was with them, the disciples are filled with passion and reverse their direction to return to Jerusalem. That which they had fled in discouragement now becomes their place of mission. A time comes to turn, or repent, from discouragement.

President Barnes preaches on Luke 24: 28-31 | March 18, 2021
Miller Chapel
Lenten Series on the Road to Emmaus
Scripture: Luke 24: 28-31
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 24:31
The unseen visible presence of the Lord became the seen invisible presence. Faith is a way of seeing the Christ who has been with us before we recognized him. This transformation came to the disciples through the ordinary breaking of bread. All of life can be sacramental if we have eyes to see the holiness in it.

President Barnes preaches on Luke 24:25-27 | March 11, 2021
Miller Chapel
Lenten Series on the Road to Emmaus
Scripture: Luke 24:25-27
Oh how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe… 24:25
The risen Jesus has to interpret the scriptures these disciples knew but did not believe. In a theological community it is easy to confuse knowing about Jesus with knowing him. The scriptures as the Word of God are meant to open our eyes to the living Word who walks with us even in our deep disappointments.

President Barnes preaches on Luke 24:22-24 | February 25, 2021
Miller Chapel
Lenten Series on the Road to Emmaus
Scripture: Luke 24:22-24
…some women from our group astounded us. 24:22
The discouraged disciples only had the testimony of the women who heard from angels that Jesus was alive. But apparently that was not enough because we are told these disciples were "sad" and walking away from their dreams for what Jesus could do. We too only have the testimony of those who were a part of the Easter story. That’s not certainty. And that is what makes room for faith. Certainty is just one more thing to give up for Lent.

President Barnes preaches on Luke 24:13-21 | February 18, 2021
Miller Chapel
Lenten Series on the Road to Emmaus
Scripture: Luke 24:13-21
But we had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel 24:21
Cleopas and another disciple are on the road out of Jerusalem after the crucifixion of Jesus. They’re trying to walk away from their disappointments. Along the way “a stranger” joins them on the journey. We can’t really walk away from Jesus even when he disappoints us.

President Barnes preaches on 1 Corinthians 10:23-30 | February 4, 2021
Miller Chapel
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:23-30
All things are lawful, but not all things build up. 10:23
We are created to live with both desire and discontent. There is nothing unholy about either one. In fact, nothing good is accomplished without them. But they are powerful drives within us, and the challenge is not be consumed by them, which hurts us and the community around us. We worship in order to get desire and discontent tuned.

President Barnes preaches on Philippians 4:4-7 | January 19, 2021
Miller Chapel
Scripture: Philippians 4:4-7
Let your gentleness be known to everyone. 4:5
At a time of transition into the new semester, and transition into new national leadership, it is good to consider again what kind of people we want to be. Among the last words of the Apostle Paul to the church was the call to be known for its gentleness. Is that the reputation of the church or our seminary? Is it how people would describe you?

President Barnes preaches on Luke 1:39-45
December 3, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Luke 1:39-45
Elizabeth was too old to be a mother. Mary was too young. But the Holy Spirit interrupted the socially conditioned expectations for their lives. And the first person each wanted to find was the other. This may be the first Christian community — two women whose lives were changed by hope when it came too late and too soon. John leaped up in Elizabeth’s womb when Mary approach with the Christ child already forming in her womb. Whenever we come together as the interrupted community, something still leaps up as Christ approaches.

President Barnes preaches on Mark 8:22-26
November 19, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Mark 8:22-26
This is the only account in the four gospels when Jesus has to touch someone twice in order to provide healing. Why was this second touch necessary? Clearly not because Jesus, who raised the dead, had to try harder. All of the healings in the gospels were not about the healings, but they were signs. This healing of the blind man is a sign that we need more grace than we have already received in order to see clearly. It doesn’t matter how much you have learned or experienced, there is more to the grace of Jesus than you have yet received.

President Barnes preaches on Ruth 4:13-17
November 5, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Ruth 4:13-17
According to the text, Naomi, who we met as so bitter, takes the child Obed to her breast. This child was the grandfather of King David. So she was, in the end, able to embrace hope. It is significant that the same women who earlier absorbed Naomi’s bitterness now name the child who they call her redeemer. Obed means worshiper, which is how we find redemption. The story begins with Naomi’s despair and ends with her hope, which was found by embracing worship.
11/6/2020 • 10 minutes, 13 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ruth 4:7-12
October 29, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Ruth 4:7-12
In ancient Hebrew society a pledge was made by the exchanging of sandals in front of witnesses. It was as binding as our signatures on contracts. Covenant community is not just a resource that we use to construct our lives. It is a collection of pledges to be shaped by our life together. Out of these commitments something new is born, like Boaz and Ruth’s child — the hope for redemption. But we have to give ourselves to the community to find this redemption.
10/29/2020 • 8 minutes, 17 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ruth 3:6-13
October 8, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Ruth 3:6-13
Just as Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz all had plans for how to find redemption, so do we cooperate with the grace of God. Receiving grace is not a passive process, but it involves a lot of searching. Along the way, God redeems our flawed or questionable plans. Naomi and Ruth’s plan was to appeal to Boaz as their next of kin, which can also be translated as redeemer. Ruth appeals to his cloak to be the wings of God under which she will find shelter. This is not an act of submission, but of taking control of their situation. God uses this plan. So, we need to get beyond the notion that planning is not spiritual.
10/9/2020 • 9 minutes, 19 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ruth 2:8-13
October 1, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Ruth 2:8-13
The community God builds always has room for those who think of themselves as outsiders, which ironically accounts for those who only appear to be insiders. Like Ruth the hungry Moabite, we all come in a desperate search for grace. Boaz presents his community as a shelter under God’s wings. We are thinking a lot about shelter these days, but one of the things from which we most need to be sheltered is our loneliness.

President Barnes preaches on Ruth 1:19-22
September 24, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Ruth 1:19-22
Sermon: What Is in a Name?
When Naomi arrives in Bethlehem she tells her friends, “Call me no longer Naomi,” which means pleasant, “Call me Mara,” which means bitter. And her bitterness is with God. Interestingly, the story and her community keep calling her pleasant even when she wasn’t. Sometimes the community holds our identity for us.
9/28/2020 • 8 minutes, 42 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ruth 1:1-8, 14-18
September 17, 2020 | Miller Chapel
Scripture: Ruth 1:1-8, 14-18
Naomi finds herself as a Jew in Moab as a widow whose sons have also died. She is discouraged and embittered. There is a famine in Moab so she returns to Judah with one of her daughters-in-law, Ruth, who clings to her even though Naomi doesn’t want her on the journey to her home. No matter how discouraged you are, someone needs you.

President Barnes preaches on Exodus 20:7-11
March 5, 2020 | Mackay Campus Center Auditorium
Scripture: Exodus 20:7-11
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God… Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
When we live as if God is present, all of life becomes holy. And if we live in denial of God’s presence all of life is made profane. This isn’t just about avoiding cursing and getting to church on Sunday. The point of these two commands is to learn how to journey through all of life with awe. The only alternative to turn all of life into a curse.

You shall have no other God before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
This homily introduces President Barnes' five-week series on the Ten Commandments and make the case that these commandments are a blessing because ironically it is God’s law that makes us free. The first two signposts to freedom call us to remain faithful to a mysterious God who will not be shaped by human imagination.

Sermon: “The Blessing of Conviction”
Scripture: Matthew 5:10-12
If you believe you are a citizen of the reign of Christ on earth, you have to live by the convictions of this true city of God to which you belong. That inevitably means there will be those who do all they can to persecute these convictions out of you. Some of them are even in the church. But the blessing is that you know who you are, what you believe, and how you will use your life no matter the cost.

Sermon: “Scattered Languages”

The Elders of Ephesus wept when Paul left them because they knew he would be arrested in Jerusalem. One of the marks of Christians is that we grieve differently when people sail out of our lives.

"Judas who betrayed him said, 'Surely not I, Rabbi?'"
Society has always reserved his greatest judgment for betrayers because it breaks the trust and commitment necessary for us to live together. For Christians the greatest sin is to betray Christ. "At daybreak he departed and went into a deserted place."
Jesus’ ministry begins to draw a large crowd in Capernaum. But he retreats from this success to a deserted place. When the crowds find him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them and continuing his ministry to others. But Jesus was renewed in his true calling by being in the deserted place. So are we.

"I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold."
We often confuse our fold with being the whole flock. Jesus said, “…there will be one flock, one shepherd,” which means there are always other sheep from other folds whose perspective on the one shepherd is different than ours. Apparently, this is the way the good shepherd has organized the one flock.

It is easy for preachers to slide into easy Martha bashing on our way to commend Mary who "has chosen the better part." But a community of faith needs Marthas. The challenge is to insure our hard work doesn’t distract from worship where we sit at Jesus’ feet.

"Jesus stood still and said, 'Call him here.'"

"What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God?"
Micah sets a courtroom in which the Lord is the prosecutor, the mountains are the jury, and we are in the dock. Our defense are meager questions like “What does the Lord expect of us?” But we’ve always known what is required of God’s people.

December 6, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"Keep on doing the things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you." (4:9)
We want to accomplish monumental acts of heroism for God. We want to change the world. But Paul is here calling us to routine acts of faithfulness, and to “keep on doing” them again and again. Those who live by grace don’t think in terms of what they want to accomplish, but in terms of how God is changing the world through the faithful acts of quiet servants.

"Let your gentleness be known to everyone…" (4:5)
Paul doesn’t tell Euodia and Syntyche to avoid having conflicts. He does tell them to have the “same mind in the Lord,” and he tells them to conduct the conflicts gently. In fact, he expects the whole church to be known for its gentleness. This is not the same as weakness. Only the strong can be gentle.

November 15, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"…forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal…" (3:13-14)
The grace of God disrupts the former plans we had for life, and it compels to let go of the alternative past we could have had. That is the only way we can be free to focus on the goal of using our lives for the work of Christ. As Paul and other biblical lives illustrate, God is not easy on the people who get used for the Gospel. But interestingly, in the end they all want to talk about their surpassing joy.

"…at the name of Jesus, every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth…" (2:10)
Living in a very anxious society we strive to find ways to secure our lives, typically by discerning who is to blame for our problems. But the grace of God that binds us to Christ teaches us to conquer such aggression with humility. Grace sounds nice, but it is actually subversive of the prevailing order.

"These proclaim Christ out of love… the other proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition…" (1:16-17)
Some expressions of Christianity are embarrassing. Often it appears that the more anti-intellectual, and theologically naïve preachers are the more popular they are. But that should not be our deepest embarrassment. The real problem is the lack of love that sometimes accompanies our theological sophistication.

Postmodern society is suspicious of embracing narratives or even plots. We are now tempted to believe life is a series of disconnected events that have no meaning apart from what we bring to them. But by grace, we have been incorporated into the good work of a Creator who is not done.

President Barnes preaches on Ephesians 6:10-17
April 19, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power."
We are tempted to think of weakness as a spiritual virtue, and strength and power as things to be feared. But there is nothing inherently spiritual about weakness, nor inherently wrong with being strong. The call is to be strong in the Lord. It always gets back to grace.
4/20/2018 • 11 minutes, 28 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ephesians 5:6-20
March 29, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"For once you were in darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light . . ."
The light doesn’t come from us, but from Christ. And the mission of being a child of light is to shine in the darkness. Christ’s community does not exist for itself, but for his mission.

President Barnes preaches on Ephesians 4:14-16
March 22, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ."
If we cannot speak the truth in love it is not the truth of Christ. And if we cannot love in truth, it is not love. A community of Christ holds truth and love together.
3/23/2018 • 9 minutes, 28 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ephesians 3:14-21
March 15, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"I pray that you may have the power to . . . know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge . . ."
What does it mean to know a love that surpasses knowledge? The point of theology is greater than knowledge about God. The point is to know God. But that can only happen in community.
3/16/2018 • 14 minutes, 34 seconds
President Barnes preaches on Ephesians 2:11-22
March 1, 2018 | Miller Chapel
". . . you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God."
When we remember that we are adopted Gentiles in the household of God, we get less interested in thinking about us vs. them. By the grace of God there is no them. Only us – who have been “brought near by the blood of Christ.”

February 15, 2018 | Miller Chapel
"But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ —by grace you have been saved."
The Gospel always turns on the holy word “but.” We were dead, but God made us alive. None of us can self-construct a life. But grace brings us back to life in Christ’s community.

February 8, 2018 | Miller Chapel
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.”
Paul uses the phrase "in Christ" nine times in 14 verses. What does this mean, and why is it so important for the church to understand? To be in Christ, is to participate in his community.

President Barnes preaches on John 11:45-57
March 30, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"It is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed."
A plot develops to kill Jesus immediately after he raises Lazarus from the dead. Seeing the new life that Jesus offers forces a choice. Do you want it? Or would you rather orient your life around the old paradigm of coping with losses? The church needs more than ministers who help people cope.

President Barnes preaches on John 11:38-44
March 23, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"Unbind him, and let him go."
Grace is the startling act of a Savior who stands at the doors of our tombs and invites us to “come out.” Faith is the God given courage to walk out of the tomb into which we have settled. Both are necessary to enjoy new life. But Jesus has no interest in helping us make our tombs more comfortable.

President Barnes preaches on John 11:17-36
March 16, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
Martha rushed to Jesus, but Mary remained lost in her tears. But both of them offered the same lament at different times: “If you had been here our brother would not have died.” They both believed in their expectations of what Jesus should have done, which is not the same as believing in Jesus.

"...after hearing that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was."
The RSV states that “because” Jesus loved them he stayed away when he heard that Lazarus was dying. Some translate the text by saying, “Jesus loved them; therefore, he stayed away...” Jesus doesn’t come just in the nick of time, but long afterwards. That’s because he wants us to love him and not what he can do for us. When we surrender to that love we discover that he does far more than we imagined.

President Barnes preaches on Jonah 3:1-5
February 23, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"God changed his mind..."
The Hebrew notion is that God’s will is open ended, waiting to make holy responses to our response. It is always possible to repent, or turn, to the God who is waiting to turn to us. But this grace is a scandal to those who think of themselves as righteous. Our calling is never to judge who is right and who is wrong, but only to invite others and ourselves to keep turning back to God.

President Barnes preaches on Jonah 1:1-3
February 6, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of God."
Jonah received a clear mission from God he did not want. So he tried to run not just from this calling, but also from God. But mission is not just an option on career day. We don’t look for it; it looks for us. And to reject it is to flee from being in the presence of God. But God will relentlessly look for us. It is impossible to hide from God.

President Barnes preaches on John 12:1-11
April 6, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"Mary took a pint of costly perfume...anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped them with her hair."
This scene provides the fulfillment of the conversion motif that has developed through the previous chapter. Mary is again at Jesus' feet, but in worship rather than grief. Judas objects to her extravagance, even though he was stealing from Jesus. We either give or steal when we come to Jesus.

President Barnes preaches on John 20:19-23
April 20, 2017 | Miller Chapel
"If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven."
The risen Jesus said the Holy Spirit gives us the power to forgive sins. This may be more power than we want. We would rather leave the forgiving business to Jesus so we can continue to nurture our hurts. But we have to forgive not for the sake of the offender, but for the sake of our own souls.

President Barnes Preaches on Luke 17:11–19
Ten lepers were healed by Jesus, but only the Samaritan returned to give thanks. The outsider became the only insider of those who understood grace. The community Jesus is creating is made up of those who know they have received his grace. Thus, gratitude should be the hallmark of the church, and perhaps the measure of our spirituality.
9/14/2016 • 13 minutes, 34 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Genesis 22:1–3
How do we make sense of the call to child sacrifice to God? We cannot. Blessedly it did not make sense to God either. But all of us will find that we are repeatedly called to be willing to sacrifice our blessings.

President Barnes Preaches on Luke 2:8–11
Advent is either judgment or the coming of a miracle. If we use this season only to work ourselves into a frenzy to create the perfect holiday for those we serve it will inevitably be a judgment because we cannot possibly do enough. But if we lead others in opening our hearts, we may see a holy day of miracle. Holiday or Holy Day. It’s up to you.
9/14/2016 • 9 minutes, 37 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Genesis 15:1–6
“He believed the Lord who reckoned it to him as righteousness.”
Eventually we discover our call is not to do something spectacular for God, but simply to place our lives in God’s hands.
9/14/2016 • 11 minutes, 9 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Genesis 12:10–20
Immediately after Abraham received his calling things became hard in his life. So he went to Egypt where he tried to manage his way into a blessing, only to make great mistakes. Only God can give what God has promised.
9/14/2016 • 11 minutes, 9 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Hebrews 11:8–13
In the end Abraham is a model of faith in a dream that outlived him. As Niebuhr claimed, “Nothing worth doing can be accomplished in one lifetime.” Our lives find meaning in being called to something bigger than ourselves.
9/14/2016 • 12 minutes, 28 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Genesis 16:1–10
God made a covenant not only with Isaac, but also with Ishmael. This means the church has to be a blessing to those who not are part of our faith tradition. We cannot fulfill our calling without caring for the “other.”

Opening Communion Sermon for the 2016 - 2017 Academic Year
Sermon: “Dreams and Realities of Community”
9/14/2016 • 12 minutes, 40 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Mark 4:35–41
The first question is Jesus do you “care that we are perishing?” The second question is from Jesus who wonders why his disciples would be afraid? The third is again from the disciples who wonder about this Jesus. Having Jesus on board is a constant experience in amazement, if we are paying attention.
2/28/2016 • 12 minutes, 16 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Luke 5:1–11
The miracle about how many fish the disciples caught, and if this really happened, is a distraction from the most unbelievable thing in the text—there is a Savior on board
2/28/2016 • 9 minutes, 38 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on John 18:28–38A
Pilate, who is no doubt weary of his compromised life working for the system, cannot handle Jesus’s words about the truth. “What is the truth?” We say that we pursue this question, but are actually terrified by where it may lead us.
2/28/2016 • 12 minutes, 48 seconds
President Barnes Preaches John 18:15–27
By denying that he is a disciple, Peter is actually telling the truth. If being a disciple means being a follower then Peter and we are not disciples after we realize Jesus is leading us to the cross.
2/28/2016 • 10 minutes, 46 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on John 19:1–16
Pilate’s real choice was to make the people his real King, and that is what sentenced King Jesus and the world’s hope to death. We are all Pilate making this choice even though we do not realize it.
2/28/2016 • 9 minutes, 47 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on John 20:1–10
Jesus tells Mary Magdalene not to hold onto him. Easter is in part the discovery that there is more to Jesus than we know. This is part of the mission of theological education. We learn to discover more of Jesus in order to show others this mystery.
2/28/2016 • 12 minutes, 12 seconds
President Barnes Preaches on Matthew 14:22–33
It is hard to be a useful disciple of Jesus until one gets out of the boat and starts walking on water toward him. Eventually we discover we cannot walk on water and cry out to the Savior.
