Episode #53 Hungry? Types of restaurants In Big Cities

MiglioHey, this is Robert on this English podcast. And today we're talking about types of restaurants. I'm sure you guys go to restaurants every now and then. Let me know in the comments if you do, and which ones do you like to go to? So there are various types of restaurants, and if you are learning English as a second language, you might want to know the names or the types of these restaurants, because when your hunger takes over, you literally go blind, right? So you don't want to be doing that and not knowing where to go. So let's get started with the types of restaurants. So here are the common types of restaurants in most cities. The first one I go with is fine dining. Fine dining restaurants offer diners, which is the people who dine an upscale meal experience, often compromising several courses for example salad, appetizers, entrees, dessert, etc. These types of restaurants try to create a stylish atmosphere that speaks of elegance, exclusivity and class fine dining establishments can operate as a franchise for broader appeal or as a single location to increase their sophisticated image. But be careful. If you go to eat in one of these restaurants, you might come out actually hungrier than before. You might have to go home and knock yourself a sandwich because fine dining often means very little, very tiny, sophisticated food. Next one is casual dining. Casual dining types of restaurants usually share the following characteristics the customers are served at their table. Food offerings are moderately price. Atmosphere is low key, so you don't need to worry about dressing up or keeping your voice down when you're speaking. Decor is often unique and based on the type of food served. As a general rule, casual dining restaurants fall between the fine dining and fast casual on the fancy spectrum. Okay, so next is fast casual.Fast casual restaurants cater to customers who are looking for fare that is relatively quick, yet at the same time healthier than fast food and more affordable than a casual dining establishment. As such, fast, casual types of restaurants offer quality food counter service as opposed to table service and a more casual, contemporary style and decor. Next, we have Ghost restaurants, a ghost restaurant also known as virtual restaurant, delivery only restaurant, online only restaurant or dark Kitchen, is a food service business that serves customers exclusively through phone orders, online orders are both, in a virtual restaurant, as the name rightly suggests. The majority, if not all of the business is conducted via computer, tablet or smartphone. A ghost restaurant doesn't have a traditional storefront with decor, signage and a large dining room. Instead, this new business model only requires a kitchen and delivery drivers. Then we have family style types of restaurants.A family style restaurant is similar to the casual dining model mentioned above with one single difference: servers deliver the food in large dishes and customers then serve the food for themselves and pass it to other diners at the table. These types of restaurants often have a more relaxed atmosphere than the fine dining and casual dining models and cater to families with children or groups of friends. Then we have fast food. Of course, everybody knows that fast food is the most widely recognized type of restaurant, thanks to franchised chains like Taco Bell, Burger King, KFC, etc. Fast food restaurants attract diners because of their price, convenience and speed. Because of this focus, ingredients in fast food restaurants are usually preheated or pre-cooked, though not always. Food is then delivered over the counter or through a drive thru window, and customers seat themselves. So there you go. Fast food, fast food, fast pay, fast collect, fast eat. Next we have food truck, cart or stand. Food trucks carts or stands are unique modern businesses that normally specialize in a single type of food. For example tacos, sandwiches, hot dogs, ice cream or smoothies, etc., and serve a limited menu that revolves around those items. They are generally categorized together with fast food restaurants because the focus is on speed. Additionally, seating options may be sparse or even nonexistent. You see them often near the seaside front. Okay, then we have café. Cafés are characterized by outdoor seating and unhurried atmosphere and the loyalty of their repeat customers. Offerings include coffee, tea, pastry, small items for breakfast or lunch, and a small sampling of dessert.Diners order food at the counter, pay on the spot and serve themselves so the cafe model does not require a large staff. Turnover in cafes is usually low, and customers may work or socialize for long periods of time. Next, we have buffet style types of restaurant. Buffet are an extension of the family style restaurant where customers are provided a selection of food at a fixed price.Guests serve themselves and can return to the buffet as many times as they want. Yeah, but you do put on weight like that if you always go to buffet. The buffet concept lends itself well to specialty cuisine, including pizza Indian, Chinese home cooking and breakfast food. Although this is not a prerequisite, then we have pubs. Pubs have a long tradition of being the place to go when you need to unwind and enjoy a beer or other alcoholic beverages at the end of a long day. At first there were little more than bars, but in modern times, pubs have expanded their menus to other food items and full meals, as well as beer, liquor and nonalcoholic beverages. Because of the wide range of fare and the festive atmosphere, pub typically provides full table and bar service as well as casual decor games, for example, dart pool, etc. televisions for sport and possibly even a dancefloor. So if you are in the mood for a bit of a dance and a wiggly bottom, you can go to a pub if you don't want to go to a disco. Then we have cafeteria. If you attended grade high school or high school in the United States, you're probably familiar with cafeteria style dining.By definition, a cafeteria serves ready cooked food items arranged behind a counter. Patrons line up, take a tray and file in front of various food choices, picking out what they would like to eat along the way. Some cafeterias offer fresh cooked fare ordered food from an attendant, omelets, waffle, cut from the bone roast beef, etc. ready made pre plated portions self-serve, self-serve portions, for example, salad soup, etc. Cafeterias are similar to buffets, but cafeterias typically have servers behind the counter ready to dish out the food you choose. Some large corporation factories and hospitals have in-house cafeterias to feed employees and patrons alike. Then we have coffeehouse with the spread of Starbucks around the world, most people are familiar with the concept of the coffeehouse as a type of restaurant. The coffeehouse offers some unique features that you won't find anywhere else. For example, casual atmosphere, no table service, limited selection of cold food such as pastries, donuts and sandwiches, allowing guests to relax and socialize without the pressure to leave eating.Coffee shops are similar to cafes, but the focus is on the cool. But the focus at the coffeehouse and the item that most people show up for is the hot beverage, tea or coffee. Coffeehouses offer a wide variety of coffees, drinks, as well as as hot as hot tea and other drinks. The food in the coffee house often takes second place as a draw for customers. Diners, diners. At one time, you could find a diner, aka a greasy spoon in every town in America, this type of restaurant is characterized by fried food, especially chicken and fish, burgers and breakfast items served at low cost. Many diners were open 24 hours and featured booths and table services as well as long bar with stools at which patrons could sit and and receive their food straight from the kitchen. Then we have pop up restaurants. The pop up eatery is a novel type of restaurant that allows owners and chefs to experiment with different ideas and different styles of food without changing their established location. The pop up restaurant is also a fun and unique way to test the waters to see if a specific concept or cuisine would be would be successful in a certain area.Pop up restaurant range in format from a beer garden that is only open from May through August to a fine dining restaurant in a unique location. For example, a warehouse, rooftop or even old building to contemporary to a contemporary casual restaurant that moves from location to location every few nights. Lastly, we have Bistro. The Bistro concept got its start in France as a place to serve hearty meals at a moderate priced in a non so formal setting. When restaurants began opening bistros in the United States, the format evolved to include some more refined décor, fewer tables, finer foods and higher prices. So there you have it. Lots of different types of restaurants. I hope it sparked some appetite into you.But before you go out to eat, please subscribe to my channel or follow me on Spotify for now. That's it. Episode #52 Queen Elizabeth II intersteing facts

Transcript: Hello. Good morning, everyone. As we all know, the Queen has passed away and the Queen Elizabeth II was the longest serving monarch in the British history. So apart from all the typical news about the funeral and how she died and who was there, who was not there, I thought it might be a good idea to talk about some of the more lighthearted things about her that people don't really know.So I came across this article which talks about some curious facts about the Queen, which might make you think a little bit. So Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96. As we know, the announcement has saddened the nation with droves of the royal fans and celebrities taking to social media to share their condolences as the world mourns the loss of the longest reigning monarch in British history. Many of us are fondly looking back at her life from her loving relationship with Prince Philip, who passed away last year at the age of 99, to her most memorable fashion moments and iconic feminist moods. There is so much to remember about Her Majesty, and there is still more to learn, too. So despite being perhaps one of the most famous people on the planet, surprisingly, there are still plenty of lesser known and unexpected facts about Queen Elizabeth, from world records to her role in World War Two. So let's get started. Did you know the Queen did not need a driving license to drive? Yes. Unlike the rest of us who have to take a test or more than one test in order to legally drive a car, her Majesty followed no such rule. In fact, the monarch is the only person in the UK who did not need to have a driver's license in order to drive on public roads. Not only that, but the Queen did not hold a passport either. That's because both documents were issued in her name, meaning she was not required to have either, a privilege held by the sovereign alone. Next, the Queen was better travelled than any British monarch before her. During her reign, she visited over 100 countries, included Canada 22 times and France 13 times. She also owned a Greggs pastry shop, the famous pastry shop in the UK through the British Crown's State Empire. The Queen owned or partly owned 14 retail parks and three shopping centers, one of which included Gallagher's Retail Park in Cheltenham, where you can enjoy a very royal Greggs. The Queen had her own private ATM. While it is rare that Queen would need access to cash, she did have a private ATM in the basement of Buckingham Palace. Courtesy of Post Bank, the ATM is strictly for members of the royal family only. Fancy one yourself. Well, the banking at courts is free of charge. As long as you have £1.3 million to pop into your account. But sadly, rules are that the Queen volunteered as a truck driver during World War Two before taking the throne from her father. The then Princess Elizabeth volunteered as a truck driver and mechanic during World War II, making her the first female member of the royal family to serve in the military. And then you have a lot of pictures of her working as a mechanic as well. The queen bought her wedding dress with ration coupons. Speaking of WWII duty postwar austerity measures in the UK, the then Princess Elizabeth had to use clothing ration coupons to purchase the material for her wedding dress.According to the British heritage, the government allowed her 200 extra ration coupons to make the purchase. The Queen washed her own dishes at times, given that she was more often associated with crown jewels, than a pair of marigolds. You might be surprised to find out that on many occasions, Her Majesty actually washed her own dishes. Speaking to the Telegraph, royal expert and author Harry Mounts recalled that a former royal courtier once told him, I was at a shooting lunch. At the end of the lunch, I heard someone say, I'll do the washing up. I turned around and there was the queen in her yellow washing up clothes. Then the Queen sent out 300,000 cards to her royal fans as part of her role as head of the British monarchy. Queen Elizabeth sent over 300,000 congratulatory cards to people celebrating their hundredth birthdays and over 900,000 messages to couples making that diamond wedding anniversary. The queen owned over 30 corgis. It is no secret that Queen loved her corgis, the dogs, but it may come as a surprise to learn that she had over 30 of them in her lifetime, even having as many as nine. At one time, most of Her Majesty's corgis were descended from her first corgi, Susan, who was gifted to her on her 18th birthday in 1944.Some of her other corgis included Candy, Lizzie and Monty. The Queen sat for over 200 official portraits. In a world of selfies and Snapchat, sitting for a painted portrait isn't something that many of us will be familiar with, but the same can't be said for Her Majesty, who sat for over 200 official portraits, both painted and photographed during her reign. The first-ever official portrait of Queen was commissioned back in 1933, when she was just seven years old. The Queen bathed every morning with seven inches of water. Yep it sounds very specific, we know, but turns out Her Majesty was a very specific woman. In fact, every morning, while she drank a cup of breakfast tea, the queen's maid would run her above a bath.Had to be exactly the right temperature tested with a wooden case thermometer and no more than seven inches of water. The queen opened Sydney Opera House. When you think of Australia, it is likely the first image to pop up in your head is that of the Sydney Opera House. It is only fitting then that the most recognizable building in the country was opened by one of the most widely revered women in the world. The monarch opened the now iconic Australian landmark on 20th of October 1973. The Queen carried out tens of thousands of engagements across her 70 year reign. Queen Elizabeth carried out a whopping 21,000 royal engagements. That's very busy. The Queen sent a message to the moon to congratulate Apollo 11 astronauts on the first moon landing on the 21st of July 1969.A prerecorded message from Her Majesty was deposited on the moon in a metal container. Lastly, the Queen spoke fluent French. Her Majesty spoke fluent French and frequently used the language during audiences and royal engagements when visiting. These are some of her records. Her Majesty was the longest reigning monarch in history. Queen held a Guinness World Record for being the oldest British queen. Her Majesty's great-grandmother. Queen Victoria, previously held the record at age 81. Queen Elizabeth II held the record for most currencies featuring the same individual. And lastly, the monarch held the record for being the wealthiest queen in the world. So there you have it. Some of the interesting facts about Queen Elizabeth. I hope you like this podcast.Give it a thumbs up on YouTube and give me a follow, if you can on Spotify. Do check out my other episodes and on YouTube other episodes with subtitles too. Episode #51 Super Glacier Catastrophy Impending?

Transcript: Hey. Good morning. This is Robert at English 360. And today we talk about Glacier. Glacier as the Americans like to call it. Basically, glaciers are big bodies of ice and they hold a lot of freshwater and scientists believe that it is catastrophic if they were to melt because the sea levels we don't see new rapidly. There is an article in the news which talks about Doomsday Glacier. It says there's a Doomsday Glacier, which could raise sea level by several feet, two three feet, basically about a half meter or more. And it's trying to survive by its fingernails. Now, obviously, glaciers are not living animals. It's figurative. This glacier is on the edge. It may melt completely. And if it does, we will be in big trouble. Let's see why. Antarctica's so-called Doomsday Glacier, nicknamed because of its high risk of collapse and threat to global sea level, has the potential to rapidly retreat in the coming years, amplifying concerns over the extreme sea level rise that would accompany its potential demise. Now, this is a difficult word to pronounce. The Thwaites glacier, capable of raising sea level by several feet, is eroding along its underwater base as the planet warms. In a study published Monday in the Journal Nature Geoscience. Scientists mapped the glacier's historical retreat, hoping to learn from its past what the glaciers will likely do in the future. They found that at some point in the past two centuries, the base of the glacier dislodged from the seabed and retreated at a rate of 1.3 miles or about two kilometres per year. That's twice the rate that scientists have observed in the past decade or so. So basically this huge glacier, which is rooted to the seabed now, is starting to detach. And one basic problem is that if it detaches from the seabed, it's going to melt more quickly. That swift disintegration possibly occurred as recently as the mid-20th century, according to a study. It suggests that Thwaites has the capability to undergo a rapid retreat in the near future once it recedes past a seabed ridge that is helping to keep it in. Thwaites is really holding on to today by its fingernails, and we should expect to see big changes over small timescales in the future, even from one year to the next.once the glacier retreats beyond a shallow ridge in its bed. The Thwaites glacier located in West Antarctica, it's one of the widest on earth and is larger than the state of Florida. But it's just a fraction of the West Antarctic ice sheet, which holds enough ice to raise sea level by up to 16 feet or about five meters, according to NASA.As the climate crisis has accelerated, this region has been closely monitored because of its rapid melting and its capacity for widespread coastal obstruction. The Thwaites glacier itself has concerned scientists for decades. As early as 1973, researchers questioned whether it was high risk of collapse. Nearly a decade later, they found that because that glacier is grounded to seabed rather than to dry land, well, ocean currents to melt the glacier from underneath, causing it to destabilize from below. It was because of that research that scientists began calling the region around the Thwaites the weak underbelly of the West Antarctic ice sheet. In the 21st century. Researchers began documenting the Thwaites rapid retreat in an alarming series of studies. In 2001, satellite data showed the grounding line was receding by around 0.6 miles or about one kilometer per year.In 2020 scientists found evidence that warm water was indeed flowing across the base of the glacier, melting it from underneath. And in 2021, a study showed that Thwaites ice shelf, which helps to stabilize the glacier and hold the ice back from flowing freely into the ocean could shatter within five years. From the satellite data we're seeing these big fractures spreading across the ice shelf surface, essentially weakening the fabric of the ice, kind of a bit like a windscreen crack slowly spreading across the ice shelf, and eventually it's going to fracture into lots of different pieces.Monday's findings, which suggest that Thwaites is capable of receding at a much faster pace than recently thought, were documented on a 20 hour mission in extreme conditions that mapped an underwater area the size of Houston, according to a new release. So there we have it. Basically this massive Armageddon of glacier or glacier like Americans like to call it is slowly melting. If it melts, catastrophe will take place literally. When glacier stored, fresh water is released to the sea and atmosphere. It brings about massive changes. It threatens agriculture, power generation and drinking water supplies. A study on New Zealand's glaciers has shown that glacier retreat closely tracks atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and as glaciers continue to melt, their loss will impact supplies of fresh water for drinking and a host of other human activities. This is how they can affect people around the world. Populous Asian countries such as China and India get much of the late summer river flow volume they rely on from glacier meltwater. In dry periods, the population of La Paz, Bolivia, relies heavily upon glacial meltwater from an ice cap. Farmers in Switzerland, Rhone Valley, have relied upon glacial meltwater to irrigate their crops for centuries by channeling it to their farms.Glacial meltwater drives, hydropower plants all around the world. Bottling companies package glacial mineral water, glacial melt water and even ice cubes made of glacial ice are in demand for specialty drinks. I mean, in essence, we rely on glaciers as a form of national water storage infrastructure. We don't have natural water. We don't have glaciers. They take on water in winter and release it evenly during warm months. But if precipitation remains the same, does it really make a difference? Yes, because glacial ice, sequesters water in a way that prevents it from evaporating readily without glaciers even if precipitation remains constant in high mountainous areas, that water will remain in liquid form, subject to peak evaporation and runoff. Whichever way you look at it, glaciers are fundamental to our survival and it is alarming that we are losing them by kilometers every year because of global warming.Big fossil fuel companies don't want you to think about this prospect of glacial melting. It goes against their profit, they would like you to use fossil fuels until they completely run out whether we are still able to live on this planet or not. It's up to us essentially to make those tough decisions. It's a very difficult prospect, but we must do our best. With this, we end it here. I hope you like this podcast. You will find a video version of it on YouTube with subtitles, and you will find the text in the description in the podcast as well. Have a nice fun and make sure you do your best to keep the climate as cool as possible. Take care for now. Episode #50 Jobs in London September 2022

Link the website: https://jobtoday.com/gbTranscript: Hello, everyone. This is Robert at English 360. I hope you're having a fantastic day. I don't know whether it's morning, afternoon or evening, but today's podcast is about job opportunities. So what I've done is I've gone on to some to a website and I've looked at job opportunities for Italians because a lot of my students and listeners are Italians in the city of London.Okay. So let's start with some jobs that are being advertised. I posted, you could say on a website and I'll leave the link in the description. So if you are interested you can go for it. And bish bash bosh, you get yourself a lovely job. Okay, so let's start with the first one. So it's a sous chef, I believe it's pronounced sous, sous located on Kensington Park Road Osteria Napolitano champions the local farmers of Naples whose produce will stock the larders of the osteria to create antica cucina recipes such as linguine al nerano, a pasta with lightly fried courgettes sliced with parmesan cheese originated from the Amalfi Coast. Sister Restaurant to the elegant osteria Romana in Knightsbridge, which is a very expensive area, by the way, posh known for its simple, humble dishes that celebrate Roman produce and culinary history, Osteria Napoletana will do just the same, sharing the local, lesser known dishes of Reitano's origin by way of classic Neapolitan menu and an Italian wine list.So the restaurant is casual and friendly. They are looking for a sous chef who needs to have one year of experience, good level of English, ability to understand and speak a minimum of Italian. So obviously if you're coming from Italy, that won't be a problem, preferably Italian speaker. If you're interested to be part of our team, you need to send them your CV so they can have a chat with you. Experience is required, employment is full time. The place of employment is City of London. Salary is £33000 to £36000 a year. So that's gross. You need to take the tax off, of course. So let's move on to the next job that I saw. It is junior brokers, Spanish, Italian speakers. Now, brokers are people who handle insurances, in essence. So sales and marketing, it has had 168 views and it expires in 28 days. At the moment of speaking, our company provide accommodation for professionals and students living in London. As part of our continuous growth, we have opened our new office in Gherkin building in central London. To cope with the post-COVID demand, we are currently hiring for Spanish, Italian or French speakers to join our lettings team. The work consists of posting adverts of different properties in platforms such as Gumtree, Spare Room, Facebook, etc. answer to the phone calls to gather intelligence and recommend the best rooms to the clients, carry out viewings with the clients, show them the property and close the deal. So if you are really interested in the job, contact us or me, it says. So we arrange an interview as soon as possible. Experience not required employment. Full time salary is a big bracket. £22000 to £57000. I believe that's to do with bonus. So if you close set number of contracts, you get more money. So yeah, so 22K to 57k. Okay, this is in Strand and Whitehall, which is of course Central London. So these are the jobs for people with Italian language skills. While they may be of interest to you, I'm just going to show you some other jobs in accounting and finance which do not require Italian as a language. So it's just a general job, just to give you an idea of what it's all about. So this this job over here is a tax firm. They are looking for semi senior accountant. So you need to have some skills in accountancy. You will need to handle independently with regular accountancy service of self-employed person, partnership and limited companies, including but not limited to annual accounts, preparation, payroll, VAT return, workplace pension, etc.. Oh, by the way, English taxation law is way easier than the Italian one, so you don't need to have a degree or a or you don't need to have done a course in NASA to understand accounting law.You have to be able to answer client inquiries regarding accountancy and tax. You have to be able to deal with HMRC tax investigation. You will have other responsibilities like company management. Okay, so experience is required. Oh, they want Chinese. Okay, no. Good then unless you speak Chinese, of course. Full time salary is £27000 to £30000 per year. Not great because basically with £30,000 a year, if you're getting taxed 10,000 a year, that leads you around not even 1500, 1600 a month. And in a city like London, that is not very much. Trust me, it's not very much at all. So you want something above two grand a month at least. Let's have a look at other jobs. Let's have a look at retail. Okay. So there's a job for cashier shop assistant. I'm not looking. Okay, let's look at this one.Cashier This is pretty good for young people. Cashier. Where? Central and no Hoxton West in London to be absolutely 100% sure where Hoxton West is London. So you can't possibly know all the areas. Impossible, literally. I mean, unless you live in London and your job is to make maps of London and that would be okay. You would know London inside out.But I'm from London and there are many areas I don't know in London, simple, simply impossible to know. So apparently, yeah, it's near the city of London. So that's that. So what's this job about then? We are looking for Cashier at Pizza Union Hoxton just five-minute walk from Old Street Station. We are looking for friendly team members who enjoy being in contact with guests offering great service. Duties will include taking and processing guest orders, preparing drinks, opening and closing bar section, cleaning as well guest tables and help on the restaurant floor when needed. The pay is £12 per hour. Immediate start. No experience required. Meals on shift and unlimited hot drinks. Not the hard ones. Career progression. Yeah, you can become from a waiter to, I don't know, something from a cashier to a manager, I suppose.Shift patterns earliest shift is at 9 a.m. Later shift finishes at midnight. Experience is not required. Languages English Intermediate Employment Full time schedule shift patterns um nine to midnight for. If you look for a summer job or an autumn job, this would be the way to go. So if you're working at £12 an hour, so that's taxed around nine, I suppose. So if you're doing, let's say 40 hours a week, 40 times nine is £360 net a week. So that would be barely, what, 1500 per month. But you get tips, right? You can get you can beef it up with tips. So that's pretty much it. These are the jobs I came across for today. Very soon I'm going to do a regular show on my YouTube channel about jobs of all different types and sorts.I'll pick major cities like London, like New York, like Berlin. And if you are looking for a job and you want some kind of experience, or if you're just interested in knowing about these things, just tune into my shows. I suppose that's the best way to go about it. Well, if you're going to work in London, by the way, here's the thing. You must remember that you need to find accommodation, and that is one of the priciest things you can do that's that's going to cost you a fair chunk of your salary. So it's not ideal, but you can share your room with someone if you're a young person who cares or if you're going there with your girlfriend, you can just rent a room out.Yeah, you and your girlfriend and you can do all the cleaning. I'm telling you, if you the boyfriend, you can do all the cleaning and you know, she can she can do she can help you with the rest of the housework. I don't know, whichever way it goes. So if you rent out a room, it will cost you a sum, but at least you have your own privacy.Okay, but be careful because there are overhead charges like wi-fi or the electricity bill or the gas bill, and it gets very cold in London in winter. So yeah, you want to be careful. This is just for an experience. You're going to have to work to learn the language. Great. Yeah, that's fantastic. But if you want to actually make money and so set up a family, then no, it's not going to be enough. All right. Thanks very much for listening to this podcast. I wish you a superb day and please give me a follow on Spotify. And if you're watching this on YouTube, subscribe, it always helps to create more content. Have a great day. I'll speak to you soon. Episode #49 L'uso corretto di Do/Does in inglese

In questo episodio, si spiega la grammatica-inglese ed il verbo do/does.The transcript:Hello, this is Robert at English 360. And today's podcast is about DO and DOES in English grammar. I'm going to be speaking slower so everybody can understand this, especially because this podcast is for beginner-level students. So let's start with DO and DOES and how we use these verbs as auxiliaries. So in the English language, we have present simple. For example, I live in the UK.She works as a shop assistant. If you want to make these sentences negative, you must use an auxiliary verb DO. So the negatives of:I live in the UK is I DON’T live in the UK. The negative of:She works as a shop assistant is She DOESN’T work as a shop assistant. So when do we use DO and when do we use DOES?For example:We use DO with first person I, with first person plural WE with second person YOU and with third person plural THEY. So we can say: I DON’T work as a shop assistantWe DON’T live in the UK.They DON’T like eating fish. But if it's the third person singular we must use DOESN’T that’s DOES NOT.So you can say She lives in the UKOrShe DOES NOT live in the UKHe studies French OrHe DOES NOT study French. There are two things to remember. One DOES NOT is the same as DOESN’T. You can say He DOES NOT study French OrHe DOES NOT study French. It's exactly the same thing. Next thing to remember is when you use DOES in the third person singular, the normal verb loses its third form. For example, let's look at this example. He likes French.LIKES is the third person. He likes French. But the negative is he DOESN’T like French. Not LIKES, LIKE. This is because we are using DOES so we don't use the third form of the regular verb.DO and DOES can also be used in questions. For example, you can say DO you like French?DO they live in the UK? DOES she play tennis? DOES it matter? So, when we use the question form, we use DO or DOES before the subject.DO you like..?DOES he study? DO they work?Right. The last thing is the pronunciation. When you write English, it's very slow and very easy. When you speak English, you need to speak different, a little bit more fluent. For example, you can say, I don't like fish, you can say it faster. For example, you can say the sentence, I don't like fish fast. I don't like fish, I don't like fish. You are stressing DON’T.I don't like fish. In the third person it becomes she DOESN’T like fish. She DOESN’T like fish. We do not pronounce the T in DOESN’T.We don't say she DOESN’T like fish, but we say she DOESN’T like fish. He DOESN’T work in a Japan so we don't pronounce the T.In the question you normally link to DO or to DOES with the subject. You can say Do you like fish? Do you work in a bank?So for example, the sentence Do you work in a bank becomes D’you work in a bank?Does she like French? becomes Does she like French? Does he play tennis? becomes Does he play tennis? Do they live in the UK? becomes Do they live in the UK? Do they live in the UK? Right. So it's important to practice and pronounce the sentences altogether. Practice with me. Do you like French? Do you?Do you like French?Does she play tennis? Does he work in a bank? Does it matter?Do we know the answer? Do they live in the UK? Right. I hope you like this podcast. You will find the text in the description.
