There are SO many issues in healthcare that impact medical/nursing providers and patients alike, but each of them may not see the connections to themselves. This show will be a forum for nurses to tell stories about their own experiences, whether professional or family-focused and guests will inspire conversation on health and nursing-related topics. Issues will vary from communication in healthcare to current issues, such as nurse/patient ratios, dealing with conflict, how to create cooperative workplaces, speed-reading people, as nursing strikes and much more. Government policies are creating a major shift for all healthcare providers as well as their patients. We, as nurses, will be creating the future healthcare paradigms as we move forward, becoming a crucial part of the solutions. “Once a Nurse, Always a Nurse: Exploring the World of Nursing” is broadcast live every Monday at 10 AM Pacific Time on the VoiceAmerica’s Health and Wellness Channel.
Healing the Moral Wounds of the Pandemic
The CVOID-19 pandemic has left physical, psychological and moral wounds for nurses who have sacrificed so much to provide care to patients and their families. Some healthcare workers describe symptoms similar to PTSD: having panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, unable to eat or eating too much, exhaustion, tearful, and reliving the tragedies they have witnessed. There is a name for this, which also brings the good news that it can be relieved. My guest in this important episode is Dr. Cynda Hylton Rushton, the Anne and George L. Bunting Professor of Clinical Ethics at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the School of Nursing, and co-chairs the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Ethics Committee and Consultation Service. Together, we will explore the sources of moral suffering experienced by nurses and offer a roadmap for restoring integrity by cultivating moral resilience. Dr. Rushton is the perfect person to talk with us about the symptoms of this engulfing experience and how to find our way out of the cloud.

NURSES: Could You Use Some Love and Light?
I hear from nurses/HC workers daily. I hear the incredible things you do to help patients & families under your care in COVID & Non-COVID units; there are stories of love for co-workers, exhaustion, rage; efforts to lighten the load of each other & mind-numbing, heart-aching memories. I hear your doubts about yourself & your abilities under these unrelenting experiences. Who wouldn’t? Do you just want to rest your mind & hearts—to feel LOVE and see LIGHT ahead of you? It has been my dream for the past 9 months to bring that to you in some concrete way. In January I discovered my Guests Melissa Cortez & Dr. Natalee Trevino of CortexEnergySystems.org and realized their dream, is my dream, is your dream. My Once a Nurse Marketing Director, Tanya Abreu & I joined with these women to create the Love and Light for Nurses Website. Join us to hear how we can help YOU reach the support & empowerment that will re-energize you to stay in the game, Monday, March 15 1 PM ET/12 N CT/10 AM PT.

Revisioning The Image of Nursing
Post COVID, Nurses must recreate ourselves! We have more, or less, accepted the roles others and Media have portrayed us as. We are FAR more than that! My guest, Ann Scanlon McGinity is a decades-long model of Nursing Leadership, who continues to vibrantly move the role of nurses forward. In this Episode, we will share a DYNAMIC conversation on necessary changes nurses must make for our future reinvention. Let us look at Nurses’ current image. What image would TRULY do justice to who and what nurses are? How will we craft a new, more robust and comprehensive professional identity image? How will we, as Nurses, brand that NEW image, which will require the work of leadership in establishing a culture that supports this image, faculty and clinicians who can live this new image and how we communicate this to the public. DO NOT MISS this Episode if YOU are determined to help transform Nursing and Healthcare!

The Power of Words in a Mentally Healthy Workplace Culture
One of the MOST difficult and most HEALING things a human being can do is to speak about their own “secrets.” Have we ALL grown up believing that we are the only ones who have them and that revealing these truths will destroy us? Just about everyone I know would answer “Yes” to that question. The irony is that it is those who do tell the truth and then seek help, healing and a “maskless” life going forward, are truly the ones released from those demon secrets. My Guest, Kim LaMontagne, has not only stood up with the courage to do this, while she was a successful corporate executive dealing with alcoholism, but she has dedicated her life to helping thousands of others do the same. We will talk about the POWER such conversations bring to the healthy workplace and to the individuals who take their own power back by speaking up.

How and Why 4.6 Million Nurses Can Heal America
Much has been written over the past 30 years about Nurses Eating their Young. It has been debated up, down and sideways. My guest, Kathleen Bartholomew, MN, RN decided to do something to stop it. She and two colleagues, Dr. Martha Griffin and Arna Robins, wrote a book called, “The Dauntless Nurse: Communication Confidence Builder.” The book is a NO nonsense look at the reality of sometimes severe Nurse-to-Nurse Hostility. It Exists! It is Devastating to nurses and healthy care of patients! It has to GO! Here is How to do it! We will talk frankly about why nurses can and MUST change this behavior, but also how healthy nurses can heal our ailing America!

Cortex Method Stress Management: Helping Nurses Stay in the Fight
What is the cost to Healthcare for not listening to nurses in 2020-21? If Healthcare organizations in the World think they have had problems with turnover in the past, they have not seen ANYTHING yet. My Guest, Melissa Cortez, BSN is a very experienced nurse in high-risk areas. After traveling in the USA as a COVID ICU nurse and seeing the trauma, exhaustion and demoralization of nurses, she decided to share her practice of evidence-based Mindfulness to stimulate personal energy in the middle of even the toughest shifts. Encore Transforming Healthcare: Nurses Required
Our Healthcare system is broken. In fact, we do not have healthcare in this country—we have disease care. We wait until you get sick and then try to fix you, easily the most inefficient and expensive form of “healthcare” in the world. Yet, we CAN truly transform healthcare. Each of us will interact with our healthcare system, whether for our families or ourselves. Let’s conscientiously create a system, based on science, research and experience, that we can each be proud of and that we would feel confident and comforted to take our loved ones to. Let’s transform our broken disease-care system into a model of true caring and compassion focused on health, wellness and disease prevention. The people who truly understand and practice this kind of care consistently, are trained and educated nurses. We come TO nursing with the desire and often mission to deliver this type of care. Let it Flow: How Fundamental Courage and Character Prevails
This is Brian Mohika’s 2nd episode on Once a Nurse. He first appeared on December 30, 2019 to talk about his persistent and committed work as an entrepreneur to invent, sew, market and gain a small foothold in medical equipment with his Cathwear underwear for men and women who wear Foleys, Suprapubic, Biliary, and Nephrostomy catheters. As he watched the stress, embarrassment & frustration of individuals, who must wear leg catheters continuously, he designed CathWear to allow safe, clean, supportive and fashionable looking underwear. It was the DAY of that Episode that he was able to sign a manufacturing company to produce Cathwear in the USA. From there he has been catapulting to the stars, winning award after award and having his product accepted for Medicare payments. To capture the ascendence of his product and the foundation of his life as a compassionate, caring human being, Brian wrote a biography, called “Let It Flow”, soon to be released. We will talk about his and more!

Nurses Hold The Key to An Empowered Workforce
Nurses are the bedrock of healthcare around the world. Without Nurses there is NO Healthcare (HC). While doctors & every HC provider contributes to the value of HC, it is nurses who are with the patient 24/7, best know the client & family and make the directives of other departments work for the patient. Nurses are are mandated to prevent injury & disease/ advocate for the patient. They want to focus on community-based education to prevent stress-related diseases. My guest, Glennae Davis, BSN, RN, and CEO of Rx for Life, LLC, a health equity consultancy and education agency says, “Anytime a career professional feels conflict, moral distress or stressed about a situation on the job, they must pause to take an assessment, make judgments/decisions putting health first.” Nurses MUST know how to cope with implicit bias on the job & prevent their own burnout. Aided by new workplace systems, fearful, distressed employees must receive representation, advocacy, support & education.

Nurses’ Personal Finances 2021: What you need to know!
2021 is a NEW Year and New Economic landscape. Nurses have been hit hard in some Countries, States & Counties and others have been working overtime without days off. My own experience was I knew next to nothing about managing my finances except: “Save as much as you can!” I put it in a bank savings account for years. Then I discovered Universal Life Insurance & was able to borrow from it to finance 4 houses & 6 cars. Next was stocks, bonds and more. My Guest, Dan Dorval is President and CEO of Dorval & Chorne Financial Advisors. He has been working with the MN Nurses Association (MNA) nurses teaching and advising about finances for many years and thousands of clients. He understands the issues they face and the misunderstandings with their employers regarding wages and benefits. He has been an integral partner in the helping services the MNA has been able to offer its members. Call in with questions: 866-472-5792. Join us on January 4, 2021 at 1 PM ET/12 N CT/10 AM PT

Braver Angels: Reaching Across the Divide
My guests have come to the same place, Braver Angels, from VERY different directions. Dr. William (Bill) Doherty from Academia at the U of MN where he currently directs The Citizen Professional Center and cofounded the Braver Angels following the 2016 National Election, in an effort to allow members of both vitriolic parties (Democrat and Republican) come together in a safe environment to learn how to listen to one another. David S. Ball found the organization over 1 year later after 26 years as an Air Force flight nurse and dealing with the conflicts which naturally arise in those areas. Over the past 3 years, He has been the Massachusetts Coordinator of Braver Angels. Today they will bring together what they have learned in these past years and how it applies to the stressed relationships in healthcare.

“I Can Never Unsee, What I Have Seen.”
My guest, Darlene Nelson, RN, founder of Expert Nurse Consultants, joined me on this show on April 13th along with Dr. Juan Nieto, ED physician. The description I gave then, STILL fits. “In the COVID-19 Pandemic in the USA, there are two fights going on. One against a virulent & dangerous new coronavirus & the other on behalf of the safety & protection of ‘essential’ workers across the country. ”The disease is doing an exceptional job at its mission: to infect & kill as many hosts as possible. The people, hospital administrations and political leaders are, to a large extent, failing miserably at their mission: To protect each & every healthcare worker and all essential employees.” We currently have passed 300,000 deaths (as of 12/15/20) and 17 million with the illness. We are nearing 3000 deaths of nurses (which is certainly an undercount.) Today huge numbers of Americans continue to ignore the admonitions to “Wear a Mask, Distance from Others and Wash your Hands.” How will this end?

What Nurses Wish the Public Knew!
What has become abundantly apparent in 2020 is just how little the lay public know about hospitals & how they function, nurses & what they do and why there are no hospital beds anywhere in the country right now. What is amazing also is hearing healthcare professionals making comments not supported by science at all, like COVID 19 cannot be spread by people without symptoms. My guest Mary Turner, RN, President of the MN Nurses Association, was asked to speak to President Biden-elect with 3 other healthcare workers about COVID and what it has done to them and their peers. She has been on several news stations and now will talk with me about what the public does NOT understand about healthcare and what nurses do exactly. Nurses: Show us Your Hope!
2020 International Year of the Nurse & Midwife was proposed to showcase the work that nurses do every day. It has proven to be a year of showing not only nurses’ knowledge, compassion and determination, but quite unexpectedly, has displayed ALL around the world the courage, depth of mission and passion for patients that nurses hold. This show is one of celebration with nurse leaders Janie Garner, Executive Director of the Show me Your Stethoscope organization and Cara Lunsford, CEO of HOLLIBLU.com community nurses’ app. We want to talk “nursing” in a future sense. How do we reset the Year of the Nurse in 2021 to create a new level of empowerment and transformation. Nurses are emerging from the Shadows and into the Light of collaboration toward Healthcare Reform, Health Equity, & Health Care (NOT our current Disease-Care). CNO’s of New York: COVID Debrief!!!
My guests for this Episode, Rosanne Raso & Linda Valentino, two of many CNO’s of NYC’s Hospitals, who met the first major onslaught of COVID-19 on the East Coast. We’ve heard a LOT about the incredible efforts of frontline nurses, doctors & essential personnel, but VERY little about the HEROS behind the scenes. On March 29, 2020 Linda received a call from the President & COO of Mount Sinai Hospital telling her to report to Mount Sinai Brooklyn to serve as the hospital’s Incident Commander. Having previously served as the CNO of that site, she knew the hospital and its staff. At that time, 25% of the staff, including the hospital’s President & CNO were out sick with COVID illness. The hospital was the first Ground ZERO in NYC, and she was to lead the hospital out of near collapse, due to the high volume of patients and sick staff. Rosanne Raso tells another gripping story of her role as VP & CNO of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center during this time

A Nurse-Eye View of CBD
Marijuana for medical use has faced more than 80 years of ridicule, unscientific, unregulated, mishandling of the drug and decades of misinformation, myths and unethical management. Boomers have advocated for the legalization of the drug since the 50’s and 60’s, but it has only been since California, Colorado and a handful of other states did legalized medical marijuana, that it is being taken seriously to help with a wide variety of chronic and intractable health issues. My guests, Patty Gilk, RN and founder of Jes Naturals CBD Wellness and Jeri Schultz, MSN, RN and founder of Tulip Tree & Dose Medical Cannabis Nurse Consulting, are joining us today to share their professional knowledge of CBD, dispel myths and reinforce the efficacy of CBD in medical use. They will address Cannabis - Hemp vs Marijuana -Terpenes, Flavonoids, Entourage Effect and SO much more!

OutGROW the Bully
This is a topic deeply personal and simultaneously National (not to mention International). Communication is something we all do from prenatal to our last breaths on this earth. Conflict is a given. If we are alive, we absolutely will face conflict. As near as I can tell, there have ALWAYS been bullies. Why is it that we simply don’t seem to get better at communicating with these people in bullying situations? That is SUCH a good question, I decided to ask an expert on the subject: Judith Carmody, Published Author of Co-Bully No More, Unwrap the Gift of You and co-author of additional books on this subject! Judy is an advocate of Bullying Prevention and developing Life Skills Best Self- Safe Self. Join us on Monday, October 19th as we get into the mud around learning to OutGROW the Bully. 1 PM ET/12 N CT/ 10 AM PT

Fill Up Your Cup, Nurses!
There just cannot be too many ways to describe self-care for nurses, since we tend to be so bad at doing self-care. I have had Education and Coaching experts, guru’s of meditation, breath work, nurses of all types, ages and backgrounds on the show to discuss this. What I have been wanting to do is talk to relatively new nurses and dig into what works to welcome them into the career and profession of nursing; what helps when they recognize burnout brewing in their souls; and what makes them want to stay? Emily Mazurak came to my attention as exactly the right person with whom to talk about these subjects. Not only has she experienced all that I mentioned, but she came up with her own prescription to alleviate the problem as well as a willingness to share her learnings with other nurses through her “Fill Up Your Cup Project.” Please Join us for a fascinating and REAL look at a burning issue in nursing, Monday October 12th at 1 PM ET/12 N CT/ 10 AM PT.

Nurses Self-Advocate: Job Burnout to Professional Empowerment
Every day there are new stories of heroism about nurses—across the Country and around the World. Just NOT from Nurses. Media and the general population, now and in the past, really do NOT have a CLUE what nurses do. Is it because nurses are too busy, tired, burned out and in moral distress to tell their own incredible stories? Although healthcare and nursing are in the news thanks to COVID-19, when was the last time the expert being interviewed was a NURSE? My guest is James Kerridge, Director of Nursing Services at AMITA Saint Joseph Hospital in Chicago, freshly graduated with a DNP from Resurrection University in Chicago, who’s passion for improving the nurse practice environment and advancing the image and public understanding of the nursing profession, was his PRIME focus. Everyday Courage for Extraordinary Times
Fear is a reaction, courage is a decision. These 8 powerful words are from my Guest, Joe Tye’s, new class, “Everyday Courage for Extraordinary Times.” Everything in our life--our successes, joys, mediocrity, losses, & failures can be traced back to decisions we have made along the way at critical moments. We are currently in a time of GREAT historic significance. The decisions EACH of us make (whether we SEE ourselves as people of power, or not important at all), WILL impact not only OUR future but that of our country & our world for perhaps centuries to come. It all comes down to COURAGE. Even if we do not feel particularly courageous now, we each have the possibility to LEARN Courage. My guest has developed this class, for people like you & me! This is an impromptu Episode with Joe Tye, Founder & Head Coach of Values Coach, a firm obsessively focused on helping hospitals build a positive culture of ownership with courses on values-based life & leadership skills.

Detail Description (1000 Characters):
This has been a week of explosions, grief and mourning in my State, Minnesota, the country and the world on top of a pressure cooker of 3 months under the threat of COVID-19 changing every aspect of our lives. I simply cannot move on without addressing it. I have invited my friend Dr. Daihnia Dunkley, who was on the show in September to discuss Race Disparity in Healthcare. She will join me to attempt to put some perspective on how we are in this place in time and space that the world is in today. Dr. Dunkley passionately advocates for systematic improvement in diversity & inclusion within nursing and for the eradication racial health disparities related to Black maternal health outcomes. Join us as we discuss the reality of applying unremitting pressure to people unable to control major portions of their life and how that erupts at a crucial time.

What We DON’T Know About Disinfectants, Can KILL Us!
This week I had the opportunity to observe an EMT deliver a patient to the hospital room next to my mother’s room. When they brought the stretcher out they cleaned it right in front of me. Using a spray bottle and paper towels, they rapidly wiped over surfaces, missing large areas of the cart and equipment attached to the cart. It occurred to me that this act of “disinfecting” for COVID-19 is happening ALL over the Country and the world. Why is that a problem? My guest is Scott Smith, CEO of AquaFlex, inventor of BioFoam and expert on cleaning and disinfection following all the major water contamination events since 2010 (more than 60 in the US and abroad). He will tell us the dangers of not understanding how disinfection works and what causes it NOT to work. This is a subject that should be shouted from every rooftop in the world in this time of COVID-19. Join us as we enter a dangerous world of contamination and learn what WILL help!

Nurses are Drowning! What Can They Use Right Now?
Nurses across the country are drowning from the overwhelm of COVID-19 patients, lack of PPE, lack of support from some of their hospitals/administrations/Federal/State/Local governments. They are even drowning from the waves of people wishing them well & calling them (S)Heros. They don’t feel like (S)Heros. They feel like they are striving to save patients, they have not even had time to meet before they die—1-4 per shift. They are used to seeing FAR more success than LOSS. They are drowning in unshed tears and tamped down fears, because they can’t allow themselves to go there without fear of NOT being able to come back. My guest this week is Steve Gavatorta, owner of Steve Gavatorta Group, who spends his time teaching, speaking & coaching people from diverse backgrounds (including nurses & healthcare providers) on how to deal with this kind of adversity, build resilience in the face of adversity to NOT just survive, but thrive. She was on my show on June 6, 2020 and I invited her to come back with Holly (Austin Smith) Gibbs, who experienced trafficking as a child and has written a book about that experience, “Walking Prey: How America's Youth are Vulnerable to Sex Slavery.” She has received many awards for this book. COVID-19: Honor YOUR nurse with a DAISY Award!
I was thrilled to learn about the DAISY Foundation, a remarkable organization that exclusively honors nurses for the incredible efforts they make daily. Bonnie & Mark Barnes wanted to keep the memory of Patrick Barnes alive in a unique way by awarding his nurses (and eventually nurses around the world) with a tangible, heartfelt recognition by their peers/patients. Bonnie & Mark just launched a book to tell the 20-year story: “Shining the Light On All the Right.” So many people now jump on the bandwagon of calling nurses (s)heros, without TRULY recognizing the life-changing gifts they share every day. Nurses tend to believe it is JUST part of the job. In truth, it is just part of who they are at their core. Unless they have had an experience like the Barnes’ with Patrick, few people know what it is exactly that nurses do. A long-time treasured volunteer for DAISY, Nurse Cindy Lefton, will join us to fill out the story with data of how this award has impacted Nurses the world over.

Healing: The Synchrony of Body-Brain-Mind-Spirit
2020 celebrates the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale, known as the mother of nursing & hospital administration, in the Year of the Nurse & Midwife. What could be better than the privilege of talking with a Pioneer of Holistic Nursing, Dr. Helen C. Erickson? She joins me to discuss VERY deep topics that impact nurses, healthcare providers, patients & humans in general. She is one of the leading nursing theorists of the 20th century. Her theories are spiritual in nature & emphasize the holistic care of patients, which made her a defining force in holistic nursing. In 2012, the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) presented Dr. Erickson with the Holistic Nurse of the Year (HNY) award at their annual conference, citing her for bringing healing & caring to a primary place in nursing practice. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from AHNA. Throughout her years of clinical practice & education, she has never wavered from her mission of nurturing growth in people.

Parenting Under World and National Stress
We know that all parents are under tremendous stress during this time of COVID, racial and political unrest. However, I believe, mothers and particularly working mothers are under the MOST stress, due to the added roles often assigned to women. My guest today, Rachel Duffy is not only a parent of 3 young children, but also a Certified Conscious Parenting & Leadership Coach, working with parents and leaders of various fields, who have these added stressors in their lives. We will discuss how to identify the problems and shift perspective to one that opens us to making conscious decisions, not based on fear and frustration. How does a parent help young children and teens understand and cope with current world issues that impact them personally? What resources are available for parents, leaders and healthcare workers in these situations? Join us Monday, July 13, 2020 at 1 PM EDT/12 N CDT/ 10 AM PDT on VoiceAmerica.com

Nursing: A Voice to Expose Human Trafficking of Children
In a world caught up in multiple crises (Global warming, a rabid election process, COVID-19, Systemic Racism), who is there to notice that Human Trafficking is continuing at a breakneck speed? My guest, Dr. Jessica Peck, a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for over 20 years is not just paying attention, she is active in many different avenues to arrest this menace and keep it from continuing in society. She is an expert pediatric clinician and anti-trafficking advocate who provides innovative, visionary, & award-winning leadership to develop & lead inclusive & diverse interprofessional teams in multiple arenas to provide outcomes of high-quality health care. She is a recognized and published national expert about human trafficking. Nurses: Scientists and Innovators as Critical Assets to Healthcare
Nurses are preparing for the massive undertaking of recreating healthcare for the benefit of patients, the industry and country. My guests are Healthcare innovators, immersing themselves in the needs of Now AND the Future. Shawna Butler, nurse economist, health tech specialist & builder of the global EntrepreNurse movement, currently in Texas; and Tim Raderstorf, the Chief Innovation Officer at The Ohio State University College of Nursing & Head of Academic Entrepreneurship at the Erdo?s Institute. We will elucidate the world on what exactly nurses are doing to create a revolution in healthcare! An amazingly well-kept secret in the USA and the World is that Nurses are multi-faceted and VERY educated people. Do the words Scientist and Innovator come quickly to mind? How about: Researcher, Nurse Practitioner, Economist, Educator, Legal Nurse Consultant, Nurse Advocate, Nurse Attorney, Informatics, Chief Nursing Officer, Psychiatric Nurse, Trauma Nurse AND so many MORE!!

Keeping it ‘Safe’ in Healthcare Team Conversations, Part II
It is frequently during times of emergency and crisis when our best communication efforts fall apart. My Guest, Roz Lindsay, is an Australian veterinarian who found her way into the corporate world and from there launched 2 successful learning and development businesses! Her passion is helping teams to
communicate effectively, efficiently and in a humane way. Our conversation ranged widely since this is also a passion of mine. Certainly, the times we live in: fast paced, bottom lines, communication, cultural and language confusion, sets us up for ALL kinds of missed communications. We will discuss manager and leadership styles and how to respond in a peaceful way. This session and its Part I on June 8, 2020 will hopefully answer many questions in dealing with conflict communications and how we contribute to the problems. Roz will address neuroscience and its role in communication. Join us!

CNO's With a Heart
COVID-19 has uncovered horrendous deficiencies in many healthcare organizations in the USA. Among the MOST concerning, has been the blatant disrespect for nurses & other HC workers as they risk their lives caring for terminally ill patients, while being refused basic PPE & staffing support. Then they are threatened with loss of their jobs if they follow basic nursing policies. I knew this could NOT be the case everywhere in the country. In searching for CNO’s who put their nursing staff first, I found my guests for today. Both are CNO’s for large healthcare organizations. Dr. Bob Dent mentored Dr. Kit Bredimus at Midland Hospital in Midland, TX until leaving for Emory Hospitals in Decatur, GA. Dr. Bredimus became the new CNO. Both deeply believe in the concept of Culture of Ownership, taught by Joe Tye, previously on OAN. Every organization has a culture, that plays out through the actions of each employee & leader, but ALL cultures are NOT the same. Join us to be uplifted!

Racism: Health Impacts on People of Color

COVID-19: Automated Screening Program to the Rescue
Lisa Romano, CNO of Cipherhealth, my guest for May 18, 2020 and I met in the Fall of 2019, long before anyone was even thinking or a novel coronavirus. When we were actually able to connect for the show, it became apparent that Lisa’s Career led her to the right place, right time to play a shero role in the COVID-19 crisis. She had been working with Hospitals for years to create streamlined IT processes in rooming, moving/discharging, cleaning, and re-rooming patients. Little did she know, having this knowledge as well as newer work, freeing nurses from needing to report results of tests & discharge instructions to patients, put her hospitals in a perfect position to quickly realize the size and spread of the coronavirus. This data allowed them to make plans to prepare for the coming coronavirus. Lisa Romano brings over 30 years of clinical experience (CCU), hospital administration of patient flow and transfer center, and IT strategy to her role. Join us for this amazing episode.

Somatic Functional Therapy (SFT): The Best Stress and Pain Treatment, You’ve Never Heard of!
Pain and stress relief programs have probably been around since nearly the beginning of time. However the problems still plague most people around the world. The COVID-19 Crisis has only added to the stress and then pain that people are experiencing. I am one of those individuals, dealing with pain almost as long as I can remember. So, while attending a health conference in January, where my guests, today, were demonstrating the effects of Somatic Functional Therapy (SFT), I was the first to raise my hand to be a recipient. My pain is chronic, deep interacting within several body areas. At best, I have been able to diminish the pain enough to tolerate it. So, I was SHOCKED at the level of relief I received from about 5-10 minutes of seemingly minor treatment. Join me with Ramon Nunez, PhD, Alba Rodriguez, PhD and Joseph Sliwkoski, MD to discuss this phenomenal therapy.

Nursing Leadership: Back to the Future
Margaret Erickson, a nationally celebrated nurse leader with future plans of what Nursing Leadership will become as it creates a MAJOR paradigm shift from the medical model of illness & disease, to the nursing model of health, wellness, & wellbeing/wellbecoming. To a lay person, this may not sound different, but in healthcare it is NIGHT and DAY different. With the Medical model (while doctors want to help their patients to be healthy), their focus is on diagnosis & treatment, once someone IS ill. Nurses are no longer handmaidens to doctors. If you have not been treated by a nurse lately, they are professionals (often with doctorates), who work WITH doctors, as equals,0 to find the best path forward to support the patient’s health until disease presents, then return the patient to health. Nursing education needs to change for nurses to truly become leaders at the national table. The paradigm shift change in education must occur to support nurses as transformational leaders.

COVID-19: The Time for Resilience is NOW!
Today's guests, Lyn McCright and Teresa Walding (both with Advancing Nurse Coaching) are joining me today as a follow-up to their previous discussion on February 17, 2020 regarding Resilience Paradigms. At that time COVID-19 was barely on the radar and now we are all overwhelmed with the issue. It has taken an especially large toll on nurses and other healthcare workers on the front lines of the Pandemic in the hospitals and clinics in Hot Zone areas like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, New Orleans, Florida, Chicago, Arizona, Texas and more adding all the time. Lyn and Teresa will talk about the innate resilience we each have and can tap into at any time of our choosing. We will go deep on some of the fears, anger and previous unresolved crises that keep us from remembering the safe place we each have developed within us as we have matured. We each need to tap this resource NOW and help those around us to do the same. Join us for a message of Hope and Light!

COVID-19: HC Crisis Management Done Right
We have seen disastrous displays of pandemic mismanagement this year. There are many examples of managing crisis in an exemplary way with incredible teamwork & camaraderie by the healthcare (s)heroes of the coronavirus epidemic. GOOD leadership does NOT start when the crisis hits us in the face. It starts years ahead by building a 2-way culture of good relationships, honesty & trust between admin. & staff. Culture is shaped by the collective attitudes & behaviors of the people who work there. It does NOT change until people change. The ultimate leadership challenge is helping people make positive changes based on their OWN personal values. Leaders must design their Invisible Architecture™ of core values, corporate culture, & workplace attitude as they do the physical design of bricks & mortar. My guest, Joe Tye, has written a book on how to do this: The Florence Prescription, a fictional story of Florence Nightingale helping a modern-day hospital build a positive culture of ownership

COVID-19: Insights from Healthcare Workers
In the COVID-19 Pandemic in the USA there are two fights going on. One against a virulent and dangerous new coronavirus and the other on behalf of the safety and protection of “essential” workers across the country. The disease is doing an exceptional job at its mission: to infect and kill as many hosts as possible. The cities, states, hospital administrations and political leaders are, to a large extent, failing miserably at their mission: To protect each and every doctor, nurse, hospital employee, pharmacist & tech, military, emergency workers of all kinds, public employees, grocery & other clerks, gas station attendants and bus & truck drivers with the proper protective equipment to allow them to do their jobs in relative safety. My guests, Darlene Nelson RN and Dr. Juan Nieto of Texas wish to share of insights of healthcare workers.

COVID-19: Epidemiology in a nutshell - What Now?
Dr. Stacen Keating is a former guest from Once a Nurse, Always a Nurse. She is a Nursing Professor at NYU. She contacted me over the weekend with stories & messages from healthcare workers, mostly nurses, who desperately want to get their message out to the world. She and her colleague, Dr. Gary, Yu, Epidemiologist of NYU will join me on this episode to, FIRST and FOREMOST talk about the need to save lives, including frontline workers and SECONDLY why we should work collaboratively with China and the east to help do this. It is truly how the world has survived/recovered from War, Starvation and Pestilence since the beginning of time—Collaboration, WIN-WIN. Let’s bring it back out of mothballs and use it again. We need to be scientific and open to ALL solutions in order to end the pandemic in a way that takes in all available evidence and previous learning.

COVID-19 Treatment: What Do We Already Have?
In 2012, Dr. Howard Robins and Dr. Robert Rowen traveled to Sierra Leone, West Africa, during the Ebola crises to demonstrate an IV Ozone Therapy to administer to patients stricken with Ebola. They showed that this simply, inexpensive, effective treatment can make a difference with many infectious diseases, for which we currently have no vaccines or treatments. These doctors will share with the Once a Nurse audience what such a tool could do in treating the COVID-19 pandemic facing us today. Some form of Ozone Treatment has been around since 1854. Why have we not heard of this treatment before? Could it be that this is a treatment that cannot be patented and therefore cannot earn exorbitant amounts for Pharma organizations? Dr. Robins and Rowen have a paper called, A Plausible “Penny” Costing Effective Treatment for Corona Virus - Ozone Therapy, is about to be published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology. COVID-19 Message! Increasing Suicide Rates for Returning Vets AFTER Treatment
I was first aware of this topic from seeing the documentary: Medicating Normal, about military veterans returning from war, receiving psychiatric care and polypharmacy. The unusual piece is that the number of suicides of such veterans AFTER this treatment is up significantly & far more than the general public. Angela Peacock is one of the vets, whose story is told in the video & Dr. Mary Vieten is a vet and founder of the Warfighter Advance program to help support these vets toward health WITHOUT medication. This story is not only important, but stunning. It speaks to me on many levels, but most immediately because of my growing discomfort with the treatment of mental health patients in America. Over-medication of individuals seems to be prevalent, lack of nature in unnatural environments. “Beautiful” locked wards, but a minimal amount of outlets for normalcy: music, human conversation, productive “work” to fill long days of monotony. What really heals humans after inhuman trauma?

A Conversation with a British Midwife
The World Health Organization has designated 2020 as “The Year of the Nurse and Midwife”. We certainly have covered the nurses in depth, it is time we talk about the midwife. While often individuals become nurses prior to being midwives, this is not always the case in all countries. The sets of challenges and issues faced by midwives can be VERY different from those of most nurses. When I met Sally Pezaro, PhD MSc BA (Hons) RM, an Academic Midwife at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health at Coventry University, Great Britain, I was greatly impressed with her qualifications and deep knowledge of this area of healthcare. She joins me today to discuss Midwives in Great Britain, the well-being of the midwife in their role, safety of maternity care, creating better understandings & care for the birthing transgender community, exploring problematic substance use among registered midwives, and the incidence of domestic violence. Resilience Paradigm Principles
Nurses in 2020 are in trouble. It appears in the form of bullying, burnout, and leaving the profession. There is a saying that “Life is what happens while you are making other plans.” Since this is true for all of us, we need to learn how to be resilient through whatever comes our way. Some say you “have” it or you don’t. I believe we can learn new habits and tools to make us more resilient. My guests, Lyn McCright and Teresa Walding have created Advancing Holistic Health to prove that point. They developed a program called the Resilience Paradigm, the principles of human psychological functioning, and we will discuss the principles of health behind it. Through this groundbreaking advancement in the field of health care—a foundational model for living fully in the present—we can now teach, through logic, that which can only be realized through insight. Using it, you will see the innate resiliency of your clients, colleagues, and, most important, you will see it within yourself.

Parenting Our Parents: Transforming the Challenge into a Journey of Love
My Guest, Jane Wolf Frances t, is a psychotherapist, attorney, author, coach, trainer, speaker and blogger, who has written an extraordinary & greatly needed road map about how to prepare and how to manage when our parents need us to help by parenting them. This is an experience which will happen for most of us at some point. The book is very engaging and shares her story and that of her parents, but also brings us into view as she shares potential hazards, insights and tips about what we might expect as our parents morph from the people we have always known and probably depended on, into frail and dependent people, who are strangers to us. We will discuss Jane’s shock of first realizing that while she was living and growing her life and career, her parents had hit a roadblock of illness that threw them both into a hell of exhaustion, confusion and terror. They held the information from her because of fear. It is those fears and the realities they brought Jane that we will discuss.

Specialized Mental Health Services for Children, Youth, Family
I became aware of the Nexus Youth and Family Solutions. through Linda Barnhart, who worked at the same healthcare organization I did, but after I left. I've been wanting to address this topic and demonstrate the life-long damage that can be done to children and youth if trauma is NOT addressed and healed. Nexus CEO, Dr. Michelle K. Murray, was kind enough to to join us. When I was young, there was not much consideration of the traumas that young people experienced. I think the idea was that either the child would forget or their brain was so pliable that they would simply adjust and go on with their lives. Nothing could have been further than the truth. Parents feared the negative perception of the family, if the Dirty Laundry was aired. Nurse Entrepreneurship: How It Is Done!
I talk to SO many Nurses who want to venture out on their own with a great new idea/product they would like to promote. So many of those in their NEXT sentence say, But I could never do it! I need a steady paycheck. My husband would hit the roof! Does that sound like you? It sure sounds like me. In fact they only way I tiptoed into the fire, was after I was laid off, then was injured and could no longer work as a Nurse. My guest, Pat Iyer, calls herself a Serial Entrepreneur and has graciously agreed to share her knowledge on the subject with us. Join in with questions/comments/personal experience on Once a Nurse, Always a Nurse: Exploring the world of Nursing.

Encore: Racial Disparities in Healthcare: Patients and Professionals.
The disparities in healthcare & related topic of nursing workforce representation of African Americans (AA) and other minority groups is a needed dialogue. If you are not involved, you may be unaware of the problem or how important it is we rectify it. Many have known the healthcare of AA is consistently not of the same quality as other patients, especially when compared to whites. Now there are numerous studies validating that truth. It is especially apparent in the Maternity & Newborn populations. My guest today, Dr. Daihnia Dunkley, is an expert in Maternity statistics & advocate for improvement of healthcare we deliver to this vulnerable population. It is vital for the success of our nation that mothers are safe throughout pregnancy & delivery & each child born is healthy & able to grow to adulthood in an environment of safety. It is equally vital that the nursing workforce is a true reflection of the diverse populations we serve, in order to effectively address the disparities!

Case Managers: Guides through the Healthcare Maze
I almost titled this episode: The Secret Lives of Case Managers. I tried for a while to become one and it almost felt like a secret society! The right handshake, gets you in!! Seriously, Case Management is a Nursing field, which will ONLY become MORE needed as healthcare becomes less centralized in the hospitals and clinics, and more complicated. Patients and healthcare providers will need an accurate connection of the clear reality of the patient, families, needs, and providers. The patients will need a GPS locater Nurse to guide them through the maze of doctors, facilities, tests and more, while they simply focus on healing, rest and calmness. My Guest is Deanna Cooper Gillingham, a wonderful expert on all things Case Management. She will share her insights into the art and science as well as how to enter and advance in the field. One unique aspect Deanna manages is a Case Managers Cruise: March 28 - April 4, 2020. To learn all about that, go to CaseManagersCruise.com

Human Trafficking: Intersection with Healthcare; Part 1
How much do we as nurses & other healthcare providers personally know about human trafficking. Even the most basic statistics are devastating: 600,000 to 800,000 women, children & men bought & sold across international borders every year & exploited for forced labor or commercial sex. (U.S. Government) When internal trafficking victims are added to the estimates, the number of victims annually is 2-4 million. Do you know someone who has been trafficked? If you respond “No”, don’t be so sure. They are right here among us, especially if you work in ED, OB, Clinics or other healthcare entry points. What we need to do as providers is to be able to recognize & assist these people during that fragile few minutes, hours or days when they present to us. Today’s Show is with expert in this field, Tammy Toney-Butler. She is a nurse, ready & waiting to help us expand the reach of hope to these individuals. Here also, is a web site for children of trafficking: www.arkofhopeforchildren.org

Transgender Patients Need Affirming Nurses
The desire to have your body match the internal sense of yourself is NOT new. The number of people courageously & openly taking the steps surgically & pharmacologically to make that happen and the healthcare opportunities to succeed IS more new. To care for these amazing people, will require a new breed of nurse to assist these individuals through their ongoing process of claiming their true bodies. I remember in the 60's & 70's going through years of angst around, Who am I? Many, if not most of us, were thinking in a metaphorical manner. These individuals are dealing with who they know themselves to be internally, NOT matching who their Birth Certificate, mirror and everyone around them says they are. My guest today, Shannon Whittington, has molded her career toward helping these individuals by training nurses to care for them. Classes to train nurses for Transgender & Gender Non-Binary (TGNB) Clients are here and available in much of the USA. Join us!

Building the Future of Women's Health
It has long been known when we give a woman a hand up, she lifts an entire village along with her. The same is true about healthy women. For almost as long as there have been humans on earth and efforts to improve health have been a priority, women have NOT been the focus of that learning, research and education. This show is an introduction to the Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital Conference in Minneapolis on October 10 and 11. It is a foundation to begin building a far greater focus on womens health. Three of the speakers will join me today to talk about the conference and some specifics about it. Tanya Abreu is the Conference Curator and will share how to capture the mind, market and hearts of people passionate about improving womens health. Dr. Alba Rodriguez will share her revolution in pain and stress management. Dr. Loretta Bruening will talk about positive results from positive moods. Frances McHie, RN, Building a Culture of Diversity into the 21st Century
In 1619, the first 2 ships of captured Africans landed on American soil, which launched a culture in American colonies, built on an economy of slavery. Many people still believe that culture ended with the Civil War. Nothing could be further from the truth. Benjamin McHie Marie Manthey, join me to reveal the journey of one young woman, Francis McHie in 1929, who bravely fought the status quo of blatant discrimination toward black citizens in Minnesota in 1929, by applying to the School of Nursing at the U of MN. She broke the color barrier in nursing, not only Minnesota, but every state she stepped foot into over the course of her lifetime. Her nephew, Mr McHie, will share her story with us. Ms Manthey, pioneer of Primary Nursing will share a historical look at discrimination in U of MN. We will introduce a new U of MN Nursing Scholarship in honor of Francis for individuals of color. Nurses: What does it mean to be a Woman of Integrity?
When I saw the website Women of Integrity, INC. I was stopped in my tracks. My thought was what specifically are we talking about when we say this? How are women of integrity different from men? Speaking with Shantay Carter, made me want her as a guest on the show. This is a dialogue worth having! In addition to being a busy BSN, RN at Northwell Health Systems, she noticed a huge need in her community. While MANY people, educators, researchers and social workers, acknowledge the great need of young women of color to have positive models and mentors, FEW people take that step into action for them on the ground. Shantay Carter is an exception to this truth. In 2010, she established Women of Integrity, Inc to stand beside high school youth in Long Island, New York. It's Mission statement says: To empower and educate women of all ages and ethnicities. As an OB Nurse, this has long been a desire of mine. Join us to navigate these topics!

Entrepreneur or Intrepreneur? How do They Lead to Innovation?
I have done shows on Entrepreneuship and on Innovation, but have you ever heard of Intreprenership? The first time I heard it, I connected with it. So many people who stay at the bedside or join an organization as a nurse, think they have to leave their creativity behind. Nothing could be further from the truth. My Guests this week are setting up a dynamic dialogue on how all three of these concepts fit together and intertwine. Michelle Rhodes, MHS, RN, CCM, CMCN is a best-at-whatever-she-does kind of person and will bring her insights into improving any situation you find yourself in. Dr. Sandra Cleveland knows how to reduce stress and sick days for nurses, by supporting engaged and flexible employees. She blazes a trail for individuals to move from their current role to their dream role. We will ALL talk about invigorating the job you currently have. Workplace Violence! It Can Happen to You!
We have talked a lot in the past year about less than stellar conditions in Nurses places of work, including Bullying, Burnout, and lack of support for one another. What we have not addressed is Work Place Violence. It is hard for me to believe how widespread this reality is for a lot of reasons. This is one of those issues that if Nurses are given a voice in finding a solution (or many solutions), I believe that nurses can meet that challenge. The big question: Do we walk away or stay and change it ? My guests today have done a LOT of thinking on this issue. Donna Zankowski, has come to this issue through her role as Occupational Health nurse. Patt Moon-Updike, represented nurses in front of a Congressional Committee addressing her own experience of violence at work and the impact it has on her and other nurses. Challenging the Conflicts of Diverse Nurses' Experiences
This show touches close to my passion for making Nursing the greatest profession of all. In every one of over 100 shows I have hoped to encourage, yet challenge each nurse to strive for their best. In my professional experience, it has only been the past 20 years that I have encountered day-to-day interactions with nurses of color, because each location was primarily white. As I have journeyed through life, read books illuminating the reality & learning from my friends of color, I have been forced to address my own white privilege. In doing that, realizing how different my perceptions of the world are from professionals of color, I believe it is my duty as a human being to rectify my ignorance by learning to interact with every person in a way that upholds their knowledge, passions & perceptions, as well as my own. Join me for a FASCINATING discussion with Benjamin Mchie & Dr. Tammy Sinkfield, August 5.

Music: International Language and Medication
We live in a world of rhythm. In ancient times, humans moved to the rhythms of nature, they created art, dancing and music that mimicked the sounds of the body. As we have modernized those rhythms, we have gotten lost in the cacophony of our lives: city, traffic, building, plane noises. Yet, our bodies, especially in illness, CRAVE the sounds of nature and healing. When my chronic pain began to become overwhelming in the '80's, I would become so anxious I couldn't sleep. I couldn't even rest. One day I bought a 5 spot CD player and music that I thought might be soothing. It was. It allowed me to lay down and be absorbed into the gentle rhythms and beats of the heart. My guest discovered the music research of Niels Eje during a similar period in her life of discord around the mental health issues in her family. The music was called MusiCure. My guest is Anne Taylor, nurse, mother and conduit to this amazing healing music through her business: Scandic health.com. Join us!

Dealing with Pain Without Medications
Pain has always been an issue to humans. We have consistently worked to relieve it-originally with natural methods (herbs, oils, massage). Over time, many more intricate, imaginative, & scientific have arrived (acupuncture, medicines from herb compounds, & homeopathic methods). In the past 150 years, some have leaned heavily toward surgery & drugs. Money/greed have factored into our current situation with a crisis of people addicted to Opioids and other substances—originally to deal with pain & now to deal with addiction. My guests are two people who go beyond practitioners to a level of healers, using modalities they have learned for years, then practiced intently, now adding their own unique intuitions to make them work for each individual client. Full disclosure: both of these people have helped me as a client: Michael Wangsness, PT with HealthEast Optimum Rehab in St. Paul & Briah Anson, Rolfer, and most recently, Homeopathic medicine, with a private practice in St. Paul.

Nurses International: Growing Nurses!
A much overused word in our language is inspiring and Miriam Chickering is certainly that. I think she has made such a huge impact in my life, because she personifies the person I always dreamed of becoming--someone who makes a difference in the world in a head-spinning way. Miriam started Nurses International.org about 5 short years ago, with herself and a handful of volunteers, with the mission of educating people in low resource countries as nurses. Not just a handful, but a WHOLE lot of them--enough to staff a country! And not to her specifications alone, but in collaboration with each country--listening to what they saw as their needs and desires and matching with her volunteers to create the online reality! It was only November 19, 2018 that I first had her on the show and in such a few months she has continued to grow the volunteers, countries and potential nurses. Join me to hear what Miriam and 2 of her volunteers, Delaney La Rosa & Connie Jones have done for the world!

Behind the Murder Curtain
Bruce Sackman is the Author of Behind the Murder Curtain along with 2 colleagues: Michael Vecchione and Jerry Schmeterer. We think of healthcare as attracting Angels of Mercy, drawn to helping people at the MOST vulnerable times of their lives. Rarely do we consider the doctors and nurses also drawn to such vulnerable people, for the sole purpose of the pleasure of murdering them and watching them die. Our show today considers those people, the staff whistle blowers, the patients and families devastated by them & the incredible difficulty of putting such people in jail for as long as possible. Mr. Sackman lays out the army of people needed to make this happen, including some of the MOST crucial: the nurses who report these people, suffer being ignored, shamed, ostracized for doing so and the Forensic Nurses, whom make the healthcare maze visible to investigators. He calls these nurses Bruce's Angels. Join me for this startling, riveting and macabre story.

The Consequence of Communication
In a world in which humans have become more and more polarized in our views, communication and hearing, healthcare sits right on the middle of the conflicts. Not only do people in healthcare have extreme pressure and choices in their work, but the people in the world holding all of those polarized positions work there. My guest David Ball is a nurse with a LOT of varied experience in healthcare and has recently joined a group called, Better Angels. This group is traveling the country with a program that allows people with different political views to sit down next to one another and learn 4 skills: 1) Setting a constructive tone; 2) Listening; 3) Speaking; 4) Handling Difficult moments. David will talk about how these skills can be used in any conflict experience, but especially in healthcare. To create a world in which we all want to live and work peacefully, we MUST learn and practice these skills. What better a place to start than healthcare?

The Impact of Healthcare Providers on Patients and Clients
Ray Befus & I met on LinkedIn when he shared a post from Dee McCarthy: I love you. No…I might not know you. But if folks can hate for no good reason, I can love. It started a conversation on the impact of providers on patients health and outcomes. Ray said: When caretakers (doctors & nurses) are stressed, patients suffer. We work in an environment made stressful by the fact that lives hang in the balance based on the quality of our work. Isn't it normal to blow off steam by yelling at a coworker? Pointing out loudly the incompetence of others--for their own benefit--helps them. RIGHT? I have had several guests on the show this year discussing Burnout & Bullying. This show takes it a step further. What does the dysfunctional operation of healthcare organizations do to the patients, unfortunate enough to be subjected to it? Join us Monday on VoiceAmerica.com at 12 N CT. Share your thoughts or ask questions of Ray by calling 866-472-5792 or emailing me at leannevoiceamerica.com

A Transformational Nurse
I have become fascinated with the unending options available to nurses in careers and industries in (and especially out of) the traditional healthcare environment—not to mention entrepreneurial adventures. I met this week’s guest, Dr. Kathleen Ziegler Halverson, through a previous guest and friend, Cindy Bultena. We connected immediately as she began discussing the wide variety of careers she has held including the Army Nurse Corps, traditional nursing, Director-On-Site Medical Clinic for General Electric Company, Senior Specialty Representative for Pfizer Inc, Territory Manager for Herman Miller Healthcare, and Executive Leader to several value-driven entrepreneurial companies. Kathleen says “Nurses need to think differently, expand their viewpoints and horizons on the WHOLE care continuum, not just their area of expertise! They have the power to influence the future of healthcare, IF they embrace nursing differently!” Join us Monday at 12 N CT on VoiceAmerica.com

Nurse Bullying
Dr. Paul T. Clements from Drexel University, has been known to say, “Always be mindful. You may not know who’s watching you or who you’re inspiring.” This is exactly what happened to me, while listening to a Webinar presented by Dr. Clements titled: “Workplace Bullying: Not acceptable / Not Tolerated” on October 31st. This is a topic near and dear to my heart in regard to Nurse Bullying. He said 1 in 3 nurses leave their job due to Bullying! This is a shocking and unacceptable truth in nursing. At a time when we need each and every nurse available and by 2030 will need 90 million more worldwide, we cannot afford to allow this menace to continue. How do we stop it? Tune in on November 26th at 12 Noon CT to join us in this conversation.

Teaching Nursing to the World!
Have you ever dreamed of doing something REALLY big to help the World? My three guests, Miriam Chickering, Dr. Stacen Keating and Kathleen Capone are doing just that. Recognizing the incredible progress education (especially of girls) adds to a community anywhere in the world, Miriam Chickering founded the Nurses International organization, a 501c3 start-up organization, developing open access curricula for multiple levels of nursing education to cost effectively train Nurses in low resource nations. Dr. Keating and Kathleen Capone are working with her and VersityU to provide vital nursing curriculum and artificial intelligence tutoring in over 20 countries free of charge to nurses unable to afford the cost of books. A few of these countries are: Egypt, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Burundi, and Guatemala. Join us for what MUST be a fascinating discussion with these 3 fascinating women!

Burnout: Reignite A Love Of Nursing
Len Robinson joined me on July 30th for the single most listened to session this year on Burnout for nurses. This is a melding of each of their experiences and mine in overcoming this deep-seated problem draining the ranks of excellent nurses today. Len also share his wisdom and research for his new book, Love It or Leave It: Sixty Days to Reignite a Love of Your Career, provides a strategy to an amazing career & extraordinary life. Doulas: What Was Old is Completely Redefined
As a Labor and Delivery Nurse, I worked in a hospital that did not have Doulas. I guess you could say that we functioned in that capacity. Doulas (with or without the name) have been around as long as women have needed help delivering babies--which is to say, forever! Many people are aware that while Doulas (the name means, Mothering mother), have never really gone away, they have returned in force. As women want less medical intervention in their labor and delivery, they need more hands on knowledgeable assistance at every stage of labor to deal with the unique evolution of their own personal delivery. That is where professional Doulas come in. My guest Randy Patterson has not only been a successful Doula with her own business, she has now opened a business to help other people become just as successful in this intimate role. Please join to discuss your experiences with this birthing assist.

Telephone Triage Nursing: the Role, the Benefits, and the Future
Triage has been a part of healthcare for nearly as long as there have been disasters: man-made, as in war or accidents, or natural disasters. At some point someone said, With all these people hurt, dying or dead, we have to focus our limited care providers on the people MOST likely to survive. (I have a feeling, whatever caveman/woman, who came up with the idea, did not use those exact words!) And Triage continues every day, in every hospital, every city and country in the world. Today a phenomenal amount of the triage is done on the telephone. What does it look like? How has it changed since it began and why? How will this type of nursing change the future of healthcare in the USA and the world? Do you have experience with Telephone Triage Nursing? Join me with my guests: Celeste Knoff, Margaree Jordan-Amberg and Renee Walsh, all from HealthPartners in Bloomington, MN.

Collaboration is Just 1 Human Away
I am thrilled to have as my guest, Dr. Mary Tilak form Highland, Indiana. She is a healthcare provider who has embraced the concept of collaborative healthcare from way before it was the thing to do! With strong influence from her mother, also a doctor, she transferred her philosophy into reality in every area of her practice and career. I am eager to look deeper into what is the mindset of this type of practitioner and how to hire for a collaborating workplace. How do you demonstrate that belief in every encounter with staff, patients and colleagues? Does it transfer to home life? Maybe we can even discuss why so many people in our country and others see collaboration as a nasty word. Please call and join us Monday at 10 AM PDT, 12 N CDT! 866-472-5792

Some Thoughts about Gender Equality
What is the Chinese curse? May you live in interesting times. I want to touch on one tiny part of the a recent uproar--Gender Equality. There is more to this subject than can be said in an hour. This volatile brew has been stewing for decades if not since the beginning of humans. it has occasionally in history broken through the surface angrily and rolled out like a wave of lava. Some progress seems to occur, then there is a settling and hardening and the process begins all over again. I first experienced the lava flow in the 60's and 70's then the 90's and now in the present. This gender inequality has always been very apparent in nursing, despite the fact that nurses are about 90% women. The lava flow now has to do with the debacle occurring in the international eye on the American Senate Judicial Committee stage during the nomination process of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. I am not interested in the specifics of the case as much as the reactions of the genders of observers. Join me.

One Mother's Answer to a Colicky Baby
We always used to hear about building a better mouse trap, but as an OB and Nursery Nurse, I would say what is REALLY needed is a Baby Bottle that eliminates Colic in newborn and young babies. There is nothing that will drive a new parent more insane than the constant and pitiful screams of a baby suffering from gas pain. My guest, Priska Diaz, is not a nurse. What is she? A mother of a colicky baby with a Masters in Science and a determination to come up with something to help babies like hers plus babies, who (for whatever reasons) breast feeding is not an option. Many a mother on an endless night have thought about it and maybe even tried, but Priska was able to accomplish it. Weaving Our Passions into Our Present
For many nurses, our work IS our passion. But for some of us, there is that insistently whispering voice in the head to go do what our PASSION calls us to do. Fill in the blank with your own personal passion. But that is one of the VERY cool things about being a nurse. It does NOT have to be either/or. We can have both/and! My guest today is Melissa Mills, who is very much a nurse, but currently using her knowledge and experience to actually create her passion in writing! She has become an entrepreneur and combined her passion for writing and her love of nursing to stimulate other nurses into talking together about varied and amazing topics. We will chat on a whole host of her interests, from Generation Zee to Gossiping at the nurses' station. Grab a cup of tea/coffee and join us!

He has written a Whitepaper on the subject and is actively working to teach healthcare leadership what’s involved in the development of disengagement and burnout and what it will take to change it. Alzheimer's: A Nurses's Primer
Lori La Bey is my amazing guest. She is a sought-after speaker, trainer and advocate for Alzheimer patients and their often, overwhelmed families. She learned all this the hard way: 32 years ago with her mother (who lived 30 years after diagnosis--AMAZING!) At the time there were few or no resources available, doctors and nurses were rarely confident about the issue and she saw the effects of their blunders played out on her mother. Lori has come to look at this issue, less from a medical point of view than the Relational point of view of the individual. She talks about how the words we use with and around people with Alzheimers, can actually influence behaviors. She shares tips & wisdom on positive, partnering interactions with loved ones. Out of her experience, she has created numerous joyous resources for people currently making their way through this unfamiliar journey. PLEASE do listen and rethink everything you thought you knew about Alzheimer's.

Nurses Care for Adults Sexually Abused as Children
In the last 10-15 years the dirty little secrets that sexually abused children held through their lifetimes, started to seep out. Boston Archdiocese was among the first to be brought into the light. From there it spread around the world. Finally these former victims are coming forward, freeing themselves from their self-imposed prison--after not sharing the secret with anyone for decades. Nursing License Reciprocity
Nurses are licensed in the State in which they live and practice. They can apply for licensure in other states, but it can be a cumbersome and sometimes frustrating process. Boards of Nursing across the country are in business to protect the public. Their interaction with nurses is entirely to that end. What I discovered is that they may not be as friendly or helpful to nurses as one might expect. The State of MN is currently working on a law called, the Nurse Licensure Compact, which would allow a nurse to obtain one multistate licensure to practice in any compact state. Jackie Russell is a nurse and lawyer for the MN Nurses' Association (MNA). She will be discussing what the Nurse Licensure Compact is and why MNA opposes it. Advanced Practice: What is it about?
Nurses, always indispensable, are becoming even more so by continuing on for advanced education and certificates in a wide variety of fields. They are able to extend the reach of doctors in all directions and often have the ability to function on behalf of patients based on their own knowledge and philosophy of care. One thing that makes Advanced Practice Nursing care different from doctors and surgeons is that often they have ongoing and continuing care for their patients, where (especially for surgeons), the doctors are involved in an episode of the patients' health, but may never see them again. Nurses work closely with the patients, insuring understanding of diagnosis, options for dealing with their condition, post-care instructions and continued follow-up for years. Join us for this discussion of pros and cons of advanced practice, reasons for pursuing this avenue of nursing and how to decide whether it is right for you.

Nurses Pay it Forward
Nurses are used to serving. It IS what we do. No one does it better than Nurses! Most of us work hard, continue our education credits, maintain busy lives outside of work and are very aware of the gratitude we owe the people who have helped and guided us in our career. This would seem to be the perfect time to thank those supervisors, managers, mentors and role models, by sharing how we have Paid it Forward to others. I really want to encourage all of you out there listening, to call in and share: 1) Who was that special person for you; 2) What did they do that has stayed with you forever; and 3) What did you do to Pay it Forward to someone else. Please call on Monday, December 18th at 12 noon CT and show your GRATITUDE! Thank you for listening! The number is 866-472-5792.

Our Perception is Our Reality
In Nursing, as in life, how we perceive a situation is how we react to it. How we react, creates another reaction from those around us. I have touched on this topic in the past, but I would like to bring it more specifically to life in the Nursing profession, with examples and experiences. I invite you to join this discussion with your examples and experiences of how you were looking at a situation skewed it to the positive or negative, just based on your outlook. It could be with a co-worker, patient, doctor, during a crisis or just during a normal day. Let's look at perception together to see the outcomes!

Men in Nursing: How Is It Different?
When we think of Nurses, the first thought is probably of a woman. In reality, men have been in the role of nurse for most of Human History. There are records of the first nursing school in 250 B.C. in India, which admitted only men. We know that they functioned in Europe during plagues and certainly in most wars. It has really only been in the 19th-20th centuries when women became the predominant or ONLY people accepted to nursing schools in the USA. Until the about the 70's. Since then the % of men in nursing has tripled from 2.7% to 9.6%.
This show is a conversation with 3 extraordinary men who all started as RN's working in hospitals and then developed their careers to a great degree. They will share what it is like to be a male nurse--the positives and drawbacks along with what men can bring to the role of nursing and so much more!

Nursing Entreprenuers
As nurses, most of us are just full of GREAT ideas to improve the equipment and tools that we use every day. Few of us follow through with those flashes of brilliance. My guests, Jennifer Krispi and Patty Long are the exceptions. Each of them took those great ideas and launched them into a marketable reality. Let's find out how they did it!

Conflict Resolution: Scared? Don't Be!
The way we look at and deal with Conflict is a direct result of where we have come from with dealing with conflicts and the success (or lack thereof) we have experienced. We have been influenced by the ancestors we have, the lessons we have learned from the generations of family with whom we immediately relate. Then there are total strangers, friends, teachers, ,mentors, etc.
Join me today to discuss some of these thoughts related to changing our experience with conflict! Let me know your thoughts and experiences by calling in or e-mail me at leannevoiceamerica@gmail.com.

Meditative Movements for The Reflective Nurse
Ellie Peterson and Natalie Lu are friends who found their individual wisdom works beautifully together to show nurses how to provide the vital Self-care that we so often deny ourselves. Western medicine has made amazing technological advances in providing drugs, treatments, transplants and more. While these solutions offer relief from an immediate health threat, it is NOT alleviating the root causes of disease. Prior to modern medical advances, folk medicines and understanding the innate powers of the human body, were the healing prescriptions of the time. It seems we are at an opportune crossroad to integrate the wisdom of the past healers with modern sciences. Nurses' vision for the value we add needs to be clear in clarifying what we uniquely bring that optimizes patient outcome. Join us for a fascinating discussion on this and more.

Who Am I and Why Do I Need to Know?
This show will be the start of an ongoing periodic look at how personal understanding can make us a better nurse.
I want to spend a bit of time on Personality assessments in general and Myers-Briggs more specifically. This is a fun topic, but actually taking an assessment and getting personal feedback is an easy way of starting to understand and appreciate ourselves. This, ironically, leads to understanding and appreciating others. This can lead to some personal wisdom about how to interact with others in a positive and respectful way.
For a Nurse, what could be better than to understand why a patient, family member, doctor, coworker, etc. might talk and interact with us in a way that is unfamiliar, uncomfortable and conflict laden. More important, how to stop the negative flow of the interaction and move it toward a positive outcome.

What is Nursing to a Nurse?
This show is all about what makes the difficult, heavy, draining, emotional, demanding career as a nurse something (s)he will LOVE!! It is ALL about the Stories. I will share some of the stories that have kept me in nursing, things that I learned from patients and other nurses. I want nurses to call 866-472-5792 in to share one of your stories. Getting to Know Me
I am an educator, who loves to support nurses in finding their own greatness. Currently I am teaching an RN Refresher Course through a Community College in Minnesota. My students have been encouraging me to get this material out to a wider audience. I want to peruse the world of nursing with other nurses world-wide. This is the first step in that journey. I could think of no one better for the job of helping me launch this program than having a conversation with my treasured friend, mentor and role model, Betsy Stites. Betsy and I will discuss the journey we have had as a way of introducing me to this new audience. We met when she was the Obstetric Nursing instructor for the unit where I worked. Over the years, we created a safe and respectful closure of 2 hospitals in St. Paul, MN. She later was my director in an Organizational Development Department. We remained friends even after she Refired in her new adventure as founder of Consult Imago, a life coaching practice.
