What a time to be alive. None of us has ever lived through a pandemic like this. Around the world people are affected in different ways and to different degrees. One thing that for me is a constant comfort is music. I've been listening to a lot of classic tracks the past couple of months. Like comfort food, this is comfort music. Everyone knows that jazz and soul played a big part in the early mod scene, and so of course did the blues. Mostly white British youth became enamored of delta blues belted out by black American musicians in the mid to late '50s. The sounds of Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Slim Harpo, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddly, Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Boy Williamson swamped London music clubs. A first wave of older players latched on to the music like Alexis Korner, Zoot Money, George Fame, Cyril Davies and Graham Bond. These early blues adopters took other younger musicians under the collective wings and mentored the future stars of the British invasion in rhythm & blues such as Long John Baldry, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Manfred Mann, Eric Burdon, Rod Stewart and more. It was these stars that the early mods embraced and turned into the icons of their burgeoning teen music scene. This then is the blues in the beginning of the mod era. In 1980 musical currents were steeped in punk, post-punk, power pop, and new wave. The Specials were riding high off the success of their debut album, and founder Jerry Dammers pushed the band to immediately record a follow-up, More Specials. But rather than continue the DIY punked up ska and reggae they had mastered on their first LP Dammers pushed for doing something entirely different, something new and contrary to the popular sounds of the era. In an interview in mid-1980 Dammers said: "It's time for 2-Tone bands to begin getting experimental. Some of the home-grown ska has started to become a cliche. We've got to start all over again." So he drove The Specials in hard left turn creating an album of easy listening, exotica, lounge music. And young mods like yours truly ate it up. We didn't realize we were cutting our teeth on lounge music and that it was training us up for the coming cocktail revolution of the 1990s. There's no doubt that Jerry Dammers trained mods to like lounge, exotica, tiki and other incredibly strange music that we embraced decades later. So who are the people Jerry really trained? Who are the graduates of Jerry Dammers' Bootcamp? Welly, welly, well, sirs, here it is. Start. Stop. Turn it off and back on again maybe it will work. Jazz has always played a big part of the mod lifestyle, indeed it was arguably the founding sound of the original mods. Over the years R&B, soul, power pop and other musical styles have become even more dominant in some ways. But elements of jazz always have been and always will be a mainstay of mods the world over. I'm not a deep jazz cat by any means, but I like jazz. I've got lots of jazz favorites like from the early stuff like Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, and Count Basie, and of course all the various flavors of mod jazz from Jimmy Smith, Chico Hamilton, Miles Davis, and so on. What is the perfect pop song? Good luck on getting an answer. Most of us can't agree on what a pop song is, let alone which ones are perfect. Or near to. But, Mary Queen of Cosmos had the guts, the chutzpah, the balls if you will, to take up Mr. Suave's challenge to figure out the modern day perfect pop song. You can blame this modcast on honorary producer Mary Queen of Cosmos who was the inspiration for this week's show -- as she often has been in the past as well. Anyhow she recently sent me Otis Redding's Mr. Pitiful which Redding wrote and recorded in the Stax studios in 1964 and then released on his 1965 album The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads. Just like some girls' mothers, some years are bigger than other years. One of the great mod friendly years in musical history happens to be back 20 years ago, Before the internet, before MP3s became ubiquitous, back to when vinyl was still dead, CDs ruled the musical universe. I'm a rug cutter from way back. This is the modern world. So proclaimed The Jam back in 1977. But how much more modern is the world today, as it is complete with iPods and mp3 players and more portable music than you can shake a tailfeather at?When I first got into the mod scene portable music was a cassette tape played on a three pound Walkmen. Cassettes typically held a dozen songs, maybe 18-20 if you made a Ramones mixtape. But that was the best you could do if you wanted your music to go mobile. Well, this indeed is the modern world. Now I have an iPod that has upwards of 6,000 songs on it, a phone that has a couple thousand more, and a laptop with a digital catalog of just over 30,000 songs. And in this digital musical dream world I have become a slave to shuffle. So this week I'm bringing back the iMod shuffle. The whole show was picked out by my iPod's shuffle. This installment of the iMod shuffle is the result of a recent trip to the dog park with Kali Shiva and Dick Gibson (she's a goddess, and he's a dick). Anyhow, this modcast mix really did come up in exactly this order. East meets west with Shibuya-kei taking center stage in the mod world this week. Shibuya-kei was a 1990s music movement that wasn't about Tokyo's ultra-trendy and fashionable Shibuya district as it was about a rather lucky gathering of Japanese musicians who mixed bossa nova, soul, funk, jazz, techno and synthpop into a retro-futrist sound that was redundant yet fresh. Shibuya-kei's most prominent artists -- Flipper's Guitar, Pizzicato 5, Love Tamborines, Kahimi Karie, Fantastic Plastic Machine and others -- mixed together everything from sixties pop and motown, to acid jazz, krautrock, French ye-ye and twee. The result was something like if Sergio Mendes and Burt Bacharach had a Japanese love child. So this week I'm exploring the soul and style of Shibuya-kei and also exploring a few of the scenes influences, as well as some of it's offspring and distant cousins. Here, finally, was proof that mod could mutate into a reflection of contemporary street culture and yet still retain its vital characteristics: confidence, defiance and an appreciation of a nice pair of shoes, all wrapped up in a cocksure bravado traceable all the way back to original ‘tacky herbert’ Jimmy Cooper. A booming Loaded magazine (run by Jam fans James Brown and Tim Southwell) happily ran fashion spreads of Liam-esque models in fishtail parkas and Hush Puppies and Oasis duly became the biggest band since The Beatles. Once again mod chic had officially became the nation’s leisurewear and outlook of choice. -- Mojo Magazine, 2004In the early 90s American music ruled the airwaves internationally. Seattle had spawned the angrily apathetic punk-metal hybrid that was grunge, and the slacker sound had rolled right round the world. For every action there is a reaction. Britpop was that reaction. Blur front man Damon Albarn explained Britpop has a reaction to grunge's lack of style. The Britpop scene of 1994 - 1997 was a sort of stylistic second coming of the mod revival, this one based less on soul and R&B and more on the pure Britishness of being what was essentially a modern mod. Britpop bands brought back the importance of being British, and the music was so thoroughly British it never did manage an invasion of the US the way sixties British music had. Britpop was a cultural shift through and through. It had its own movies like Trainspotting and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. It had its own celebrity nightlcub The Blow Up.  Its own style, lad boys along with its own documentation of the style, lad mags. But above all it had its own music which dominated the world's music scene throughout the mid-90s. So, as part of my mod essentials series of modcasts I'm exploring the Britpop phenomenon. Previously I looked the sixties mods and then the mod revival of the late 70s and early 80s. And now it's time to turn to Britpop and the 90s. You can explore more as well. I had a lot of resources that I was able to crib from, using audio clips and borrowing quotes. There are some good movies about the Britpop era: The Britpop Story and Live Forever. There is a fantastic book that delves into the whole scene from the music to the culture to the politics: Britpop!: Cool Britannia And The Spectacular Demise Of English Rock by John Harris. Mojo magazine produced an entire Britpop special edition a few years back that includes interviews with about 20 of the artists and briefly tells the scene's story. Welcome to Mr. Suave’s Mod Mod World. This is a special episode of the modcast, the second in a series I call Mod Essentials. The first one, Mod Essentials: In The Beginning premiered last summer and featured my take on the most essential mod tracks of the 1960s. As you can imagine it was hardly definitive. And this one likely won’t be either . This is Mod Essentials II: The Revival. You will see that while there are some fantastic songs here, there are a number of key artists missing like The Crooks, Squire, The Amber Squad, Long Tall Shorty, The Cigarettes and lots more. From 1977 to 1981 mod was reborn in the UK, which sparked mod revivals around the world. For a few glorious years the energy and angst of punk was wed to the rhythm of soul, the pulse of power pop, and the fashions of the sixties. The Who release Quadrophenia at the height of the revival creating even more interest in all things mod. Inevitably the mod scene became overexposed, it went mainstream briefly, and that more than anything else killed it and drove the remaining mods back to their soul clubs to await the movements next revival -- still more than a decade away. Here then are the songs that I think epitomize the wide range of sounds in the mod revival. So, what are your essential mod revival tracks? I'm dying to find out from people what they see as the quintessential mod revival sound. It's all smack and tackle thanks to this being Superbowl weekend. The food is great, but I'm not one for the game myself. I'd much rather sitdown and listen to some great garage rock, or some swingin' lounge music. Or, I could mix up a modcast of epic proportions. Flashback to 1984, and to 1967, and to 1978, and even just back to '02. Flashbacks are great aren't they? So are the tracks on this week's modcast. Okay, maybe not epic, but pretty damn good none the less. And there's a few nice gems here that I blew the dust off of which I think you'll dig from The Standells, the Sidewalks and not the least of which is a great little song from power pop composer Gary Valentine who, sadly, has never received the accolades he's due.
