In Episode 151 I spoke with expat Gil. Gil grew up on a kibbutz in Israel. Life for Gil was very different as his community operated without the use of money and they shared everything, even the responsibility of raising all the children. Now Gil finds himself living in Hanoi Vietnam working within a new type of community. A community of artists whose leader was a censor police officer during the cold war. Dao Anh Khanh would regulate what artist and authors could say and display in communist Vietnam. Now Khanh is one of the biggest performance artists in Vietnam and Gil is partnering with Dao Anh Khanh to help facilitate transformative retreats in the jungle with Khanh. I met John when I was sixteen and I’ve always been fascinated by how he lives and designs his life. I’ve watched him go from an employee of a juice bar who couldn’t afford a car to a business owner who is about to open his second location. He’s one of my biggest inspirations and someone I’ve learned from when I comes to commitment and follow through. In Episode 140 I spoke with expat Josh White. He’s a professional caver living in Phong Nha Vietnam. Josh talks about feeling like he never fit in back in the UK. He’s battled with depression over the years but has discovered ways to manage it through his passion for caving and reading a book called Living With A Black Dog: His Name Is Depression. He recommends anyone who suffers from depression read this book. Now Josh spends his days doing what he loves but says he has to monitor his moods. The book has given him tools that help him avoid depressive triggers and negative mental cycles. In Episode 139 I spoke with Paige Wylie. She’s a single mom of two and designing her life around a side hustle she loves. Paige has a pearl shop on Facebook live where two to three time a week she opens oysters for her viewers that have pre-purchased jewelry to have to pearl set in. She loves her side hustle and makes an extra three to four thousand dollars a month. I was blown away when I saw what she did and heard about this business model. As she says, watching someone open an oyster live is addicting. The excitement of what will come out of the oyster and the community surrounding the experience is what keeps her and her follower coming back for more. In Episode 138 I spoke with expat Mark Zhang. Mark is a location independent online entrepreneur making seven figures in a very unique niche. Sleep Masks! In Episode 136 I spoke with expat Mara Jacobsohn. She’s been living in San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua for the last fifteen years. In Episode 130 I sat down with expat Dwayne Dixon. He grew up in Mumbai India to a family who were some of the first colonizers when it was known as Queen Victoria Gate or the Gateway to India. Dwayne’s got a bit of a passport problem. He is eligible for a British and Portuguese passport but due to a land dispute back in India he’s having trouble proving his birthright connecting him to his royal past. It’s a really interesting story that has left Dwayne in a bit of a holding pattern the last five years much of it spent if Phong Nha Vietnam where he says he’s finally found a community he feels comfortable in and can be himself. In Episode 128 I sat down with expats Max and Jack Brewer-mccabe. Max in fifteen and Jack is thirteen and they’ve basically grown up on the road traveling around the world with their parents. The family has decided to settle in Phong Nha Vietnam cutting ties with Australia where they’re all from. I love meeting and getting to know families like this. Max and Jack are so switched on to the world. Through the adventures they’ve had, the discomfort the open road can provide and the constant conversations these boys have with the many diverse people they meet has really shaped them into well round gentleman. Their daily routine is similar to many kids and they love their video games but theirs live are so rich in experiences that would be impossible to have if the family had sayed in Australia. She now writes travel guides about her treks around the world plus coaches new authors on how to write their first book. She recently designed her life to spend six months a year in her home country of India and six months back in Australia where she raised her children. Susan is a great example of someone who is reinventing herself after a long fruitful career. Now she is living her passions. In Episode 125 I sat down in Yangon Myanmar with expat Alex Bertrand. He’s an artist and animator using his skills to create animations with a powerful, positive message. He’s created his own branch at a media company that allows him to pass on his animation skills to local workers. He works with local groups on issues like plastic pollution and uses his animation to help educate the population. Alex is another example of a digital nomad who has combined his passion for art and animation to design an incredible life in a place he’s making an impact. In Episode 119 I sat down with expat Aaron the owner and operator of DiscoverContainers.com. He decided that he wanted to live a location independent lifestyle and instead of building a business from scratch he bought one online. Aaron sells information products on how to build container homes and makes a good living without ever having created any of the content. Of course it’s never that simple but Aaron has a background in analyzing businesses that are for sale and found this option to be suitable for the lifestyle he wanted to create. In Episode 117 I sat down with George Baltakian. He’s Armenian/American and found that breaking free from the Armenian community he grew up in was difficult. He had a dream to pursue a life in music but the tight knit community was not supportive. He had to come up with a way to satisfy their concerns without compromising what he wanted. In Episode 116 I sat down with expat Tom Kent. He’s the founder of TomKentCoaching.com. After getting out of the military he found that even with a degree in math from West Point, a career as an Army Intelligence Officer, the companies he always dreamed of working for didn’t have a place for him or so they said. He quickly adjusted and got his dream job but he had to get creative. After eighteen years and multiple jobs he decided to start his own business using all the tools and recourse that helped him over the years and now he helps the men and women who are just getting out and wanting a desirable, fulfilling career in something new. In Episode 109 I caught up with Nabil Amra. You may remember him from episode forty-nine. He was a contestant in the Golden Globe, a solo sail around the world. A race that has only been held once in fifty years. In this episode Nabil recounts the trials and tribulations of trying to get his boat seaworthy before the race. Then the sea conditions destroyed his autopilot and drove him back to the Canary Islands. It became a survival sail that took him sixty four hours and left him a shell of a man when he finally got there. It’s a very honest account of one competitor’s challenge in accomplishing a dream. In Episode 105 I reconnected with my old friend Travis Nelson. Eight years ago he was addicted to drugs and alcohol and needed a change. He check himself into rehab and started the long journey toward sobriety and a new life. Within Herbalife he has worked his way up through the various levels. In Episode 103 I sat down with expat Austin Blevins. He’s a twenty three years old and owns Best Bangkok Tours a scooter tour business. What I love about Austin’s story is that he is a risk taker. He’s had his ups and down but at the end of each day he’s always ready and willing to look in the mirror and take responsibility for himself. His tours business takes tourists around Bangkok on the back of motor bikes giving them a real, authentic Thai experience. While in prison he discovered a self inflicted type of mental prison that was making his sentence even more painful and difficult. He discovers a way to forgive his accusers and let go of the past. In Episode 81 I sat down with expat Chris Shanks at one of his Airbnb's in Buccaneer Point Nicaragua. Chris gives us a play by play on how he's built a sustainable life here in Nicaragua through slow growth, responsible investing and a diversification of skill sets he now leverages to generate multiple income streams. He got his start with the N.G.O Project Bona Fide where he applied his knowledge of ecology and permaculture design to help increase local food security. From there he developed an agro tourism business, a land consulting business,  and an Airbnb business just to name a few. He's a huge inspiration to me because he's made a great life for himself in Nicaragua as well as a great living. In Episode 80 I sat down with expat JJ Yemma at his new restaurant Todo Con Amor in Virgen Morena Nicaragua. JJ got here in the late nineties with some friends and discovered a Nicaragua much different then all the stigma that surrounded it. At eighteen he immediately formulated a plan to move to Nicaragua and become a surf bum. Now twenty years later he's left a lasting impression on the area surfers know as Popoyo. In Episode 78 I sat down with expat Ziad Khoury. He is one of the founders of the soccer club Slammers FC and writer of his new book Complete Athlete. He was also my high school soccer coach. In Episode 77 Kellsie Forbes talks about her big life changing experiences and how she's made each transition. From backpacking around the world, sailing across the pacific, starting and selling her own business. Kellsie is a consummate traveler, adventurer and entrepreneur. This episode really inspires me to keep working hard at what I want out of life. In Episode 69 I sat down with Gordon Glanville. He's the founder and creator of a company called DIE AMAZING. It's philosophy is based on the idea that on his deathbed he wants to have no regrets, peace in his heart and know that he lived his life to its fullest. In Episode 68 Marite Ribeyron talks about reaching all her goals and dreams by 30 and feeling empty inside. Then she took a vow of silence for one and a half years and found something very peaceful inside herself. In Episode 64 I sat down with expat Spirit Creager who always had dreams of getting away. Before he knew it he had a son, house and construction company back in Spokane Washington that was going to need his attention for the next 20 years. Then the housing crisis hit and times started getting tough. One day he got pulled over for speeding and this routine traffic stop escalates to the point the officer tasers Spirit multiple times. Now Spirit suffers from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). This was the catalyst for him to make some changes in his life. Spirit now lives in Nicaragua with his wife and they are beginning to build a company that focuses on the creation of all natural products made in Nicaragua. In Episode 62 I caught up with my old friend expat Starnes Arnold (aka Christopher) on a late night call to Taiwan. Starnes left home for Thailand in 2014 and has since settled in Taiwan to teach English, learn Chinese and fight MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). In Episode 61 I sat down with Lexi a 25 year old traveler who's been on the road 5 years. She has a great sense of adventure and a lust for life. As of now she finds herself in Nicaragua with $80 to her name but speaks with confidence and a calm demeanor that it will all work out. In Episode 54 I got to speak with Darwin and Snuggles while they sat in their car outside a coffee shop in Flagstaff Arizona on Facetime. You see they've designed a really cool life and documented it on their very popular YouTube channel called Darwin On The Trail. They are a couple that in 2014 sold everything to live their dream life on the road in all the National Forests around the USA. They have been at it now 3 year and have started to make a living online posting about their incredibly simple life on the road as backpackers. In Episode 51 I caught up with Kris Garner an amazing woman who has designed her life without debilitating anxiety. She has experienced severe to debilitating anxiety since she was 15 and been on a cocktail of drugs to treat her anxiety and depression since then. Over the last 2 years she has really worked hard at getting herself off her medications and learned new ways to channel her overwhelming emotional energy. In Episode 49 I caught up with Nabil Amra a Palestinian/American foreign exchange trader in Minneapolis. Nabil is about to cut ties with his present job/life forever. He admits to being burnt out on the 9 to 5 and ready to embrace something different. He has decided to start this new life by joining a sailing race that has only been held one time previously 50 years ago. It's called the Golden Globe and it's a solo sail around the world that he hopes will take him roughly 9 months. The rules require that no modern technology be used during the sail so he'll be navigating via the stars using charts, a compass and a sextant. It's incredibly exciting to hear about his motivation for doing it and how he is preparing. In Episode 48 I spoke with Jungle Joe (aka Joe Gilbert) a contractor from Colorado. Joe describes himself as Mr. Lucky and someone who lives life on life's terms. He makes all his decision based on doing the next "right" thing. So before the 2008 crash he took out a loan and invested in Nicaragua ready to transition his life from the states down to the 3rd world where he felt most free. In Episode 47 I shared a conversation late night with Mandy at one of our local watering holes in Gigante Nicaragua. I couldn't help but notice her light energy as she dances around the bar. She had been around a while teaching yoga but now was leaving and I wanted to capture her impression of Gigante and the people who lived there. I happened to have my recording equipment on me and thought an impromptu conversation with Mandy could be really interesting. It turned out Mandy's life path is full of serendipitous twists and turns that lead her to where we were at that moment. In Episode 44 I sat down with expat Jasi Rashid who at age 30 finished her PHD in ancient history and classical archaeology. After getting the job of her dreams she realized she didn't have the kind of freedom to live her life the way she wanted so she made a drastic change. She bought a one-way flight to Mexico for 250 euros and used the 350 she had left to start traveling and make her way to Nicaragua. In Episode 39 I sat down with Shine in southern Nicaragua and we spoke about his life and the creation of Peace Sticks. Peace Sticks is a game that brings people together into a flow state or zone state like many athletes describe. Shine created the game for people to share oneness rather than the separation traditional competitive sports can bring about.  This is not only a game everyone can play but it is also Shine's business and how he makes a living. In Episode 36 I spoke with expat Gaia Ma the founder of the Tantric Way Process and Eco retreat Enanita on the island of Ometepe Nicaragua. Gaia's life has been full of adventure and experimentation. The twists and turns she took to get where she is at today is nothing short of incredible. From a carrier on Wall Street, to finding her passion as an exotic dancer, to developing and starting her own spiritual healing method in a far off land that gives people the tools they need to deal with past trauma, embrace their sexuality and empower them to deal with future challenges. In Episode 33 I spoke with expat Seth Morrill who found himself bartending in Maui and serving old-school locals who talked about..."Back in the day...I bought my property on the beach for $30,000. I use to surf Honolua Bay with only 2 guys out.". It left him wondering if there were any other places still out there he could stake his claim and get in early on the dream life. Well, he found it in Nicaragua and is raising his family there. He has a complete perspective on expat life. Recently his baby girl underwent open heart surgery in Panama. He said although the experience was hard to go through the medical care they got in Panama and the regular care they get in Nicaragua is top notch and less than %50 of what it would cost in the States. In Episode 32 I spoke with expat Verina Olivari who shared very openly her decision to change her life and design it the way she wanted. She felt in order to do this she had to break free from those who influenced her the most. For her it was friends and family so she decided to limit communication with them and go after her dream of becoming an actress. Verina set out on a two year journey that ranged from pursuing an acting career in Hollywood to finding out acting wasn't really what she wanted. Now she lives in Nicaragua with the man she loves, has a great relationship with her family and runs a super cool cyber cafe in Nicaragua. Her story is one that really inspires me because she had to make some really big sacrifices in order to find out who she was and what she wanted. Sometimes the ones we love the most are the ones holding us back. Success as Varina says only comes when you're willing to take responsibility for your life and design it the way you want. Verina did just that and says she is excited to keep shaping it in ways that give back to a world that has given her so much. In Episode 31 I sat down with expat Derek Rotzinger a 31 year old Cyber Cafe owner down in Gigante Nicaragua. I really like his story because Derek is a "yes" kinda guy. He opened up about having to take on a lot of responsibility for his family due to his father’s stroke and his mother’s passing. When he found himself about to commit his life to a woman he wasn't sure about, a job he was unfulfilled by and a lifestyle that was good but not great he said "NO". Now he lives in a small fishing village and has a cyber cafe on the beach in Gigante Nicaragua. In Episode 29 I sat down in the beautiful Nicaraguan jungle home of expat Mark Highfill a 60 something retiree. His story intrigued me because at 50 years old he had no savings but on a surf trip to Mexico decided he wanted to retire asap.  He concocted a plan that would take him to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait with the goal of making $200,000 so he could go back to Mexico and retire. In Episode 28 I sat down and spoke with expat Tony Roberts a personal inspiration of mine and friend. We spoke about his lifelong passion for surfing, skating and the desire to capture the ever changing and innovating athletes in each sport through his photography and film. In Episode 27 I sat down with my best friend expat John Eames who has designed an incredible life for himself. He traveled through the world for many years by sticking out his thumb and being open to whatever happens. Now he finds himself as the owner of a small beachfront surf Hotel and Hostel in Gigante Nicaragua. He's raising 3 little daughters whose lives are reminiscent of Pippi Longstocking meets Mowgli from The Jungle Book. He sails his children to school or takes them via horseback certain days. In Episode 25 I spoke with Legend a gentleman who 5 years ago sold everything and put all his money into an irrevocable trust he bequeathed to his niece and nephew. He walk out his front door with a sign that said "Will work for food." and began designing what he calls a simple life. Today Legend finds himself roaming around Mexico and Central America in a red truck giving away donations he collects the 6 months every year he spends as a Trail Angel on the Pacific Crest Trail. These beautiful human beings gave me a better picture of what life was like before and after the war started.  They didn't flee immediately but only after 4 years when their number was up and they were going to be drafted into Bashar al-Assads military. In Episode 008 I sat down with Donna Cuthbert. She found it hard to make the initial jump to start traveling the way she really wanted. When she made the decision it was based on a basic trust that humanity is predominantly good natured. With that frame of mind she set out on many adventures that would test her mentally, physically and emotionally. In Episode 006 I sat down with expat Bryce Kuklok. He knows a lot about isolated weird places. Currently, he owns and operates Giants Foot Surf in Nicaragua. However, he had a very different life before Nicaragua. When he graduated from the University of Davis his parents asked him what he wanted for a graduation gift and he said, "Send me to school to learn Arabic". In Episode 005 I sat down with expat Brian Friedricks. Brian doesn't fear death or prison because he has been to prison twice and died in a car accident once. He smuggled marijuana into the U.S. from Mexico for years. His cellmate was George Jung (Jonny Depp's character in Blow) when he got busted the second time. He now lives in Nicaragua and recently fought off being permanently paralyzed due to complications from his injuries. His presence to say the least is peaceful, calm and focused. In Episode 004 I sat down with expat Dale Dagger. He is a surf pioneer and all around legend in Nicaragua. He felt the American dream wasn't for him and set sail in the 70s.
