The Core Skill To Magnetically Attract Success

Earlier this week I kicked off what I was calling my Self-Talk Toolbox series - after thinking it over more I'm changing the name of the series Psychomagnetic Self-Talk to be in better alignment with my other work. The idea is that if you can learn how to use self-talk to control what you are attracted to and repelled by emotionally, then you will ALSO be able to control the results that you attract or repel via your actions. The first key to doing this is understanding your EMOTIONAL POLARITY. Emotional polarity is the internal (often unconscious) narrative that labels something as "good" or "bad" and produces a corresponding positive or negative emotion. For example, if you emotionally crave a cookie, then you have a positive emotional polarity toward the cookie that's stemming from a positive internal narrative that labels the cookie as good - i.e "Eating a cookie is a GOOD idea because it would taste good!" This isn't inherently wrong, but if you want to be able to effortlessly stick to a diet involving NO cookies (or whatever your goal is), you'd either need to REPRESS such an impulse (which is usually not sustainable and can even cause other problems) or you need to SHIFT that emotional polarity by shifting the narrative. So when you are in the middle of craving the cookie, the question becomes: What narrative could you activate in your self-talk that would make eating the cookie LESS emotionally appealing and sticking to your diet MORE emotionally appealing? So until our next entry in this series, here's the experiment I want you to run: 1. Find a place in your life where an unfavorable emotional polarity is causing you problems (craving something bad / feeling resistance toward something good). 2. Identify the emotional narrative behind the dissonant drive. 3. See if you can get yourself to act better by coming up with a NEW narrative that shifts things in a favorable direction. In fact, I recommend trying this with everything until you run into an emotion you cannot seem to budge. Evolution Of Our Instincts

I'm starting another series this week that I'm calling the Red Pill Playbook. The idea is to present "Red Pill" truths about sexuality, social dynamics, and psychology etc. and offer my take on how to best handle these (often painful) realities. I'm doing this because I'm not satisfied with most of the conclusions I've found presented by other content creators. We'll kick things off at a high level here that lays the foundation for a lot of my future takes Red Pill Truth: We have base instincts that are at odds with our best interests, morality, and higher desires. Men have a base drive to indiscriminately sleep with with lots of women, women have a base drive to use men for their resources, people generally want salty, fatty & sugary food, we all want social and sexual validation etc. These are fundamantal aspects of our psychology and we cannot make them disappear due to wishful thinking, religious scorn, or white knuckle repression. Bad Play: Submit to your instincts because "this is who you are." There is a growing trend today that says the way to deal with these instinctual drives is to simply satisfy them as directly as possible. As a man, you're encouraged to gain the status and competence with women that would allow you to sleep around to your heart's content (much of the "red-pill" movement is based on this concept). Women are encouraged to weaponize their sexuality and manipulate men to their benefit under the guise of female empowerment. The resulting philosophies extracted from such takes is that you are nothing more than your basest drives and fulfillment is found through hedonistically gratifying these drives. Reductionistic takes such as this view humans as mindless hormone driven meat-robots, and I'm confident that we are all capable of MUCH more than that. My Play: Sacrifice the base expression of the instinct that works against your ideals so you can tap into an elevated (and more satisfying) expression of the instinct that works WITH your ideals. We've all experienced this in our upbringing, it is the natural process of maturation: A child is taught to sacrifice the immediate gratification of hitting someone or throwing a temper tantrum when they don't get their way, and this gives them access to higher level problem solving and social interaction that will ultimately serve them much better Our primal drives hold an ENORMOUS amount of energy, and if cultivated properly act as the keys to unlocking our most radiant and evolved human potential. Self-talk is the ultimate psychological superpower because it is the most practical method for managing your emotional state When you get good at this, not only can you remove unwanted negative states, but generate high powered states of motivation, focus, and joy The art of doing this adeptly is what I'll be covering in depth in the coming weeks You see, without self-talk, your only options when confronted with an unhelpful emotion are to repress or give in Repression just causes a festering of the emotion which compounds and creates further dysfunction Simply surrendering to negative emotions makes you a slave to your primal impulses and seriously inhibits progress The key to managing negative emotions is to understand that emotions operate on NARRATIVES, and that if you can find a better narrative for your situation, your emotions will shift This is what "perspective", "reframing", and "mindset" are all about: the capacity to keep your emotions in a more beneficial configuration Your psyche WANTS to be functional, healthy, and feeling good, so if you can offer your primal emotional brain a better way to hold a situation, it will shift it's configuration and the emotions will follow The key to doing this is through CENTERED SELF-TALK which is a productive conversation between your rational and emotional minds (your primal and terminal selves).This practice is broken down into two parts: translation and response. You must translate your emotions into words - this brings your emotions out of the unassailable realm of raw sensation and puts them into logical containers that your rational mind can work with and influence You must then respond to your articulated emotions using the logic of a friend and a leader By going back and forth between translating your emotions and proposing new perspectives, you'll eventually find a new narrative that generates a more favorable emotional configuration As we move forward in the series, I'll be breaking down in-depth strategies for doing this But for now, just go ahead and start talking with yourself! The Simple Truth That's Like Steroids For Your Discipline

When you're struggling with a craving or dealing with resistance to enacting some sort of discipline, there is a simple truth that can supercharge your ability to do what's right: The truth about TIME. The problem with emotions is that they do not accurately portray time - they just portray the experience of the moment. To make matters worse, the more intense a feeling in the moment, the more it tends to drown out rational thought - making that momentary sensation hold more weight than it ought to. But with a little flex of willpower you should be able to squeeze in a at least a little rational self-talk... And here's what you're going to want to focus on: How SHORT-TERM the pain of discipline is. So if you're wrestling with yourself to go to the gym, how long do you think you'll feel resistance once you push through and commit to going? You'll probably feel good once you start getting your gym shoes on. If you've got a porn craving, how long do you think you'll feel uncomfortable before you calm down and move on with your day? You'll be fine in five to ten minutes max. Significant habit changes like quitting porn entirely, getting in shape aren't months of discomfort, they are just about dealing with a few momentary spikes of discomfort a few times a week. Big accomplishments like building a new business or career can usually be bought through a few moments of discomfort getting started each day that grant you access to the the productive flow states you need to make progress.. The simple reality is that the distance between a bump of discomfort and a useful state of flow is astoundingly minute if you just flex the willpower and face it... Beating the Dopamine Slot Machine

Our world is filled with "dopamine slot machines" and everyone is addicted to gambling. Here are four tips so that you can beat the house and win big instead of go broke: 1. See the slot machines Every algorithmically generated feed, every notification ping, every new item in the fast-food menu represents another pull of the dopamine slot machine, offering a chance at stimulatory pleasure. Heck, every morning when you open one of my emails, it's like a slot machine! Open your eyes to this and you'll start seeing it everywhere! 2. Pick the best, ignore the rest As you start to see your slot machines, figure out which ones serve you and which ones don't. If an online videogame has a 50% chance of pissing you off, 30% chance of being okay, and 10% chance of being insanely awesome on any given night, should you play that or do something that lacks the chance at being insanely awesome but has a 90% chance of being "pretty good"? If a website you visit has a 5% chance of showing you something awesome, 60% chance of uninteresting crap, and 35% chance of just showing you some kind of sexually or emotionally triggering garbage, is it really worth your time? Make bets with a high probability of paying off and your happiness will increase. 3. Hack the machines in your favor Many of these slot machines can be tweaked in the way you interact with them to give you better value odds. When at the grocery store, walk around the outer rim of the store first, filling up on whole foods. Curate your social feeds so only the best content gets through to you etc. 4. Put them in their proper place Know EXACTLY where in your day and week different activities go. For example I don't touch certain websites on workdays at all - others I only let myself interact with after I've gotten a certain amount of work done. --- Do this wrong and you'll be giving your energy to games with low value that just addict and distract you. Do this right and you can engage with modern culture as a doorway to pleasure and serendipitous expansion of your mind, relationships and opportunities. Hope this helps! The best diet to help you quit porn?

A little while ago I got a question from someone who was asking me about the best diet that he could go on to help him with his porn reboot. He was trying to eat this super-restrictive clean diet to optimize his mental performance so he could feel better, look better, and have higher cognitive performance to improve his decision making. Now on the surface, this makes total sense. If you can reduce the physical and emotional negative consequences of a poor diet, then that could certainly lead to less triggers to escape into porn. If you can improve your mental ability, then you could help process cravings easier. The problem is that dietary changes are often some of the most intensive willpower drains that exist! For many guys, a restrictive diet during reboot just means that they now have TWICE the cravings (first porn and now food as well) chipping away at their resolve. This is why for most guys, I recommend only truly gentle and easy shifts in diet when rebooting, and save the bigger changes until you're clear of porn. Now, if your diet is so bad that it causes you to hate yourself intensely or is a fundamental part of your escapist escalation chains that ALWAYS leads to porn, then yeah, you might need to make some very slight changes to help you quit porn… But in general this kind of question is an example of "majoring in the minors" where you get caught up optimizing around something that diverts energy away from what's most important. The only diet that I promote devoting significant effort to during a reboot is your MENTAL diet. If you are regularly fishing through feeds, videos, and webpages that have a high likelihood of containing something triggering, then you for sure want to limit or completely remove that stuff. Likewise, if you just consume an absurd amount of low value, high-stimulation content - that can easily lead to an autopilot clickfest where you escalate unconsciously right into some raunchy stuff. I get the desire to optimize your body, mind AND quit porn all at the same time... You can do it all, just not all at once. Things are late, last minute, and rushed. Some of this is to be expected with 2 toddlers. But it goes beyond that. She needs a constant assistant , either me, a family member, or friend. If I try to make plans, they are squashed by the impending doom of whatever the crisis of the day is. How do I plan around this? I want to be consistent, responsible, and reliable. But I don’t know how to play on a team with constant crisis management. Because I’ve had issues with escapism that she takes very personally, I don’t know how to stand up to her because I’m always the bad guy. Practically, I become child care while she deals with her crisis. Do you pass the "deep victimhood" test?

Most guys today realize that a victim mentality is the path of weakness and failure. It's the idea that things are happening "to" you and that you lack any agency over your outcomes. Basically, it's focusing on the things you can't control and blaming them for your circumstances. This is in opposition to an "ownership" mentality where you focus on the things you CAN control, and doing everything in your power to succeed. I've seen a lot of guys on a self-improvement journey gain the capacity to avoid "surface" victimhood where they are whining about things being unfair etc. And don't get me wrong, this is definitely an improvement. The problem is that some guys make the mistake of thinking that when they cut out the surface victimhood, they are done. However, there is a DEEP form of victimhood which flies under the radar that is still extremely limiting but trickier to spot. Here's a little test I've come up with to spot even this more subtle form of victimhood: When you are in a state of challenge, simply ask yourself "What fantastic opportunity is this situation presenting me with?" If even asking this question annoys you, pisses you off, or makes you roll your eyes - DING DING DING you're harboring victim energy somewhere deeper in your system. If you think on the question and you can't come up with an answer, then sound the alarm because you're a victim to unconscious impulses. Those impulses might even be GOOD, but if they are unconscious then you don't own them. Every challenge is an unconditional opportunity for growth. True ownership is universally anti-fragile. You don't need to necessarily feel GOOD about what you're dealing with, you just need to be willing to consciously own the reality of the goods you are pursuing and the costs of their pursuit. If you can't honestly embrace and own what you're doing, then you need to CHANGE WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Don't get me wrong, I'm not pretending this is easy. If I could only build ONE habit it'd be this one

A good question can unlock the universe. As a coach, I make a habit of collecting them. One that hit me the other day was: If I could help someone build only ONE habit, what would it be? Based upon all my experience, the answer jumped out at me: centered self-talk. This is basically the practice of bringing the best OF yourself, TO yourself. In other words, it's the act of showing up as a leader and friend, and engaging yourself in conversation, problem solving, reflection, and motivation. I've found that most guys have pretty good leadership and friendship skills already. They know how to help people solve problems, handle emotions, and even inspire others. Even if you're not world class at any of those things, most guys at least get the basics. The tragedy is that so few guys actually share that power WITH THEMSELVES. All you need to do is tune into your emotions, see what they are saying, and then respond to them. Sometimes you need to solve a problem or make a decision. Sometimes you need to sort through your goals, plans, and priorities. Sometimes you need to process negative emotions and give yourself encouragement or affirmation. Sometimes you just need to remind yourself to lighten up and laugh! In short, the best habit is to regularly take the time to pay attention to yourself! Personally, I try to do this in my own head whenever I have a down moment. The biggest issue is that centered self-talk can be so fluid and amorphous that it can be difficult to really practice it enough to internalize the habit. The simplest method is to have some structured journaling/voice memo discipline where you sit down and have a meeting with yourself every day. If you get this down, you'll find that this not only solves a huge chunk of your problems, it will automatically will lead to you building additional positive habits. Onlyfans Empowers Women by…

No doubt you've heard about what Onlyfans is. But in case you haven't it's basically like Patreon but for porn. The idea is that people can pay to subscribe to you and then you share lewd pictures and videos with them. There have been a number of high profile celebrities who have gotten on the platform and apparently there are now over one million "creators" on there. Basically, the platform is just digitized prostitution made easy. I suppose it is only "fair" that women should be empowered to devalue their sexuality just as easily as men. In times past, men had to develop morals and character to live in harmony with their sexuality. This maturation occurred through the disciplining of their wild polygamous instinct through a committed relationship for the sake of raising a strong family. This act of self-mastery not only benefitted the man by bringing him peace and fulfillment when done healthily, but formed the cornerstone of society through the construction of solid families. However, internet pornography has allowed guys to avoid this maturation by keeping a virtual harem of women in their pockets. Onlyfans now offers the same degeneracy but in a feminine form. Instead of being polygamous (wanting to mate with many people) women are primarily hypergamous (wanting to mate with the person with the highest status / most resources). Previously, women were forced to mature by sacrificing the resources and attention of all the other men and learning how to accept, support, and nurture her husband and children. Now, she can get adulation and money from as many guys as she's able to entice. I'm quite confident they will find exactly as much satisfaction down that path as men have found in porn. Why you SHOULDN'T talk about your goals (and when you absolutely SHOULD!)

There are two main camps when it comes to talking about your goals: One camp says you should shout your goals from the rooftops for all to hear. The other side says you should keep them private and to yourself - letting your results speak for you. Arguments as to why you shouldn't share your personal goals with others: If you talk about your goals all the time, you can get the "high" of success without ever actually doing anything. An example would be the guy who loves how cool it makes him feel to talk about how he is an artist, entrepreneur, or whatever, but never actually produces anything. When you let other people in on your plans, changing direction or experiencing failure can seem more painful or difficult. If you keep it to yourself you'll be able to work through challenges and changes without dealing with anyone else's expectations. Other people can often have opinions that can create doubt or confusion and ultimately hold you back. Arguments for why you SHOULD share your personal goals with others If you tell people your goals, you have extra accountability. When you make a commitment in front of others, you are essentially tapping into motivation by putting your reputation up for collateral. In talking to others, you have the opportunity to work out your plans with the feedback of others and potentially grab some good ideas. By talking as someone who is going to do something, it helps you internalize that action as a part of your identity (assuming you actually follow through). I see the value in both perspectives, and so not surprisingly, my opinion is somewhat down the middle: Share your goals to the extent you are certain about you sticking with and accomplishing them Only share with a small group of people who you trust Don't just tell them once, maintain rapport and accountability to talk through challenges, failures and changes of direction UYAP! Why videogames are holding you back

I've been a hardcore videogame player most of my life. Recently though, I've had to come to terms with this choice: I could either unleash my potential... OR I could give up gaming. I don't believe it is possible for me to have both. Now I don't think this holds true for every person all of the time, (check the video version of this post to hear my more nuanced take) but in general I believe that videogames ultimately hold you back. Because here's the reality: To the extent that your neurochemical motivational system (dopamine, serotonin) is hooked into the fun of gaming, it is NOT hooked into the game of winning in real life. If your brain constantly is getting candy in the form of videogames, then the meat and veggies of real work and real progress will seem far less palatable. If you really want to see what you can do in the world, you can't just be willing to tolerate your ideal path, you need to be HOOKED on it. So for example, imagine that feeling of being hooked into a good game. You keep thinking about it, and are willing to play it for hours. Imagine if you had that SAME energy for the things that actually moved you forward in life. Imagine if real life was your game where you were leveling up your mind, your body, your finances and your relationships. Real life IS the greatest open world game that exists... My secret breathing trick for waking up early

What if you could gain a full hour of extra time per day that you could devote to anything you wanted that was free from distractions and full of energy? Well you can get that hour, or even more, by simply getting up earlier! You can use this time for a workout, writing, prayer, or some important side-project that you don't have the energy for later in the evening. As someone who has chronically struggled to get up with my alarm, here's a special technique I've developed to help me get out of bed at the right time! 1. Set one alarm ten minutes BEFORE you actually want to wake up This can be on your phone on your nightstand - it just needs to make you open your eyes in bed. 2. Set another alarm for when you ACTUALLY want to wake up You can use your phone, but if you really struggle to wake up, this is best set on an old school alarm clock that you plug in somewhere that you cannot reach from your bed. This requires you to physically get out of bed to shut it off. 3. When the first alarm goes off, START BREATHING DEEPLY and/or HOLD YOUR BREATH The breathing oxygenates your brain and starts to wake you up. If you got enough sleep, this alone is usually enough to get you out of bed within a few minutes. If you DIDN'T get enough sleep, then that's where the breath-hold comes in. If you hold your breath as long as you can (don't hurt yourself or anything, just make it uncomfortable) it will send a spike of adrenaline through your system waking you up even further. 4. Turn your brain on by beginning to think about the day Start imagining yourself up, dressed, and going about your day. Imagine how good it would feel to already have crushed your morning routine. If you have something you are looking forward to or want to take care of, think of that as well. 5. When your second alarm goes off hold your breath till you're out of bed! If you aren't out of bed already, then once that second alarm goes off play a game where "there's no more air in bed." How To Beat The Dopamine Industrial Complex

It's no secret that the dopamine industrial complex (Facebook, Google, Twitter, Netflix, Reddit, MSM etc.) want to hack your brain to extract your resources. If you let them do this then you'll lose time, money, and a significant amount of happiness. It's only natural to think that walking away entirely might not be a bad idea. However, I think very few people actually do this though because they don't want to miss out on all the GOOD that these companies can bring you. Connection with people, learning cool new stuff, and some genuinely entertaining content are a very real part of what these companies offer. What if you could just take the good from them without letting in all the bad? Well I believe that's possible if you follow these four rules: 1. Have other shit to do This is the most important thing. As long as you have more important stuff to focus on, you can easily set up your relationship with the dopamine industrial complex where YOU are taking advantage of THEM and not the other way around It's only when you are addicted to their drugs and playing their game that you're going to be in trouble. 2. Limit your exposure to their feeds and notifications Content feeds are where the algorithms lurk, looking to pull you down rabbit holes of AI generated manipulative suggestions. Avoid the scroll through their feeds as much as you possibly can Notifications are what they use to interrupt you and pull you into their world. Mute them and only look at the apps when YOU decide to. 3. Follow a small number of individuals/communities and unfollow everyone else Bypass the noise of the hacks and wannabes and just go to the best creators and communities. Bookmark them individually and avoid the feeds to get to them when you want. 4. Wait until you hear about something to look it uP Don't just scroll stuff waiting for something to grab your interest. Three "pillar habits" for every man's tool-belt

Since humans really hit their stride in the world, there have been three practices that have drawn out the greatness hidden within men. You must simply: Read Write Workout If you are not doing one of these then you are leaving strength and power on the table. Read It goes without saying I'm referring to reading things of SUBSTANCE. No, just listening to podcasts isn't enough. Books are important because they are the standard form in which people compress large systems of knowledge and reading is generally the most efficient form to take new information in to expand your mind. Upgrade Challenge: Keep a few physical books around, a kindle book on your phone, and an audiobook as well so that you can consume something interesting at any point. Write Writing is not 'just' writing. Writing is THINKING ON STEROIDS It's one thing to ramble out a semi-coherent thought to a friend or therapist. It's another to understand your thoughts/feelings well enough that you can put them into coherent writing in your journal. Upgrade Challenge: Post your writing somewhere other people can read it - could be a forum, a community you're a part of (like the Vanguard), or even in your own blog or social media account. Workout Doesn't matter how strong your mind is if your body breaks down on you. Exercise is one of the best methods to release feel-good neurochemicals and it even makes you healthy at the same time. Beyond this, physical training is one of the greatest analogies for just about anything. You learn a lot from developing strength. And the lessons you learn in the gym apply to just about everything else. Plus, it makes you look good. Reduce Resistance to Achieve Your Goals With These 3 Methods

Success is created by having good systems. Good systems are designed to properly account for FRICTION. There are cases where you WANT friction in your systems that create resistance to making poor decisions. So for example, if you're trying to lose weight, don't keep any junkfood in the house. This creates friction when you might want to act on a craving to break your diet - you'll have to leave your house and go out somewhere rather than grab some donuts from your pantry. Creating friction is usually pretty simple - just add obstacles in the way of bad behavior. However, REDUCING friction can be much trickier, and ultimately much more powerful because it can help you TAKE good actions rather than just avoid bad ones. Here are three simple methods for reducing friction: 1. Preparation Make it easier to start up the task. Ex: Lay out your gym clothes the night before Pre-plan out a task in granular fashion before you do it Keep the book you want to read out on your bedstand 2. Exclusivity Remove optionality so that you reduce analysis paralysis. So I recently I got a LONG email written in Korean. After popping it into google translate it said: That he had hacked my computer and taken control of my webcam Had all kinds of videos of me jerking off to hardcore porn Unless I paid him $1350 in bitcoin, he was going to release these videos on social media Obviously I found this pretty hilarious since I do not masturbate, nor do I watch porn.  But it got me thinking... what if I still did?  What if I never quit my addiction? To be honest I'd probably be sweating it a bit.  At the very least, I'd definitely be doing some semi-feverish research to see how likely of a possibility that I really got hacked was.  Now in this case, the hacker was clearly just bluffing and banking on the fact that I'm a smut fiend like most guys.  But again... what if he wasn't?  People get hacked all the time, and from what I understand - taking control over your webcam and filming you polish the pepperoni is trivial for someone who really knows what they are doing.  How would you like the peace of mind to know that no one could ever get one over on you like this?  The solution is simple: quit p*rn, quit jerking off, and take control of your sexuality.  I've always said that if YOU don't take control of your sexuality, someone else will.  Either it will be the pornographers, some manipulative woman, or in this case... some seedy hacker.  UYAP! The Secret to Banishing Overwhelm to the Abyss

We've all been overwhelmed. For me, overwhelm feels like I'm on a sinking ship but I'm stuck in a flooding cabin below deck. I'm treading water, pressing my face to the ceiling trying to grab a few breaths before I have to swim to the next room that's hopefully not completely flooded where I can grab a few more mouthfuls of air. All I can do is try to scramble to safety before I get pulled down into the abyss below. Luckily, I've been on enough of these sinking ships of emotion to learn a thing or two about handling overwhelm. The biggest contributor to overwhelm is NEGATIVE SELF-JUDGEMENT. It's not that you have a lot on your plate that's causing you to be overwhelmed. It's that you're judging yourself for not handling all that stuff perfectly. The simple truth is that you can only do your best and that's it. Sometimes "perfection" requires you to do MORE than what you're actually capable of. Sometimes there's literally not enough time in the day. Other times you just lack the focus or internal strength to pull it all off. There are times when the best you can do is to produce crappy results instead of ABYSMAL results. Life can get crazy, messy, and beyond your control. This is just the way it is. Now, this is not an excuse to slack or avoid giving your all. But it's also not reason to put expectations that create a counterproductive sensation of overwhelm. All you can do is forgive yourself for not being stronger or more perfect, and then channel all your focus into taking the best next step you can. Once you do that, all you can do is the next best thing after that. Step by step, moment by moment - that's all we can EVER do. And yeah, sometimes we fail to take those steps. That's not really okay and we need to do our best to improve. But you know what makes this all a million times worse? Beating yourself up to the point where you can no longer keep traveling. THE Man of THE House (vs) a man in a house

There is a big difference from simply being A-man-in-A-house vs THE Man of THE House. Usually guys try to oversimplify what this means by spouting off some stereotypical expectations like "the man is the [financial provider, decision maker, protector, disciplinarian]" etc. I'm not saying this is WRONG.. However, I've seen enough scenarios where the man is more nurturing and emotionally intelligent and the woman is better with money or disciplining the children. Because of this, I cannot tie any specific set of responsibilities to being The Man of The House… except one: The Man must consciously control the ENERGY of the House. I don't know one household in the world where a man can fail in this aspect and still be "The Man". So for example, a man who is regularly: Lashing out in anger Tuning out despondently Ignoring upsets and problems Spiraling emotionally or complaining in the face of issues Generally being an emotionally reactive sod ... is not The Man. If your presence is not felt at all, you're not The Man, you're a man. If your presence is felt, but it leaves only a negative impact, then you're not The Man, you're a problem. If your family regularly has to roll their eyes, cower in fear, or change your emotional diaper when you get triggered, then you are definitely not The Man. If you grew up in a household where this was the dynamic... I'm sure you loathed it. The Man decides what is the best energy to serve his family, and then models it. If the family needs calm, he is calm. If the family needs hope, he is hopeful. If the family needs strength, he is strong. If the family needs action, he is ready to throw everyone on his back and carry them if need be.. If the family needs someone to roll up their sleeves and address some mess, he's already elbow deep in it. But perhaps most importantly, the family ALWAYS needs joy and love and so he strains every fiber of his being to deliver. Tap into the ‘hidden potential’ already in you

When I was younger I had it in my head that I had to get out there and really DO SOMETHING in order to BE SOMEONE. I was obsessed with figuring out how I could obtain enough status to finally feel good enough and like who I was as a person. The problem was that this logic doesn’t work on multiple levels. Lets look at that idea to “do something”. Linguistically, it is a strange concept – you do verbs (jump, run, build, etc.) you don’t do things. So what we really mean when we say “do something” we are talking about turning ourselves into an object of sorts, that does… stuff. The idea I had was that I needed to turn myself into some sort of important object, that helped people, made money, and garnered a lot of praise and attention in order to be someone. The issue is that personhood cannot be derived from objecthood. No matter how useful, skilled, or popular of a “thing” you become (YouTuber, Celebrity, Business Hotshot, Bodybuilder etc.) you can never find yourself as a person in it. Instead, I’ve found it better to take things in the opposite direction. I needed to recognize that I was ALREADY SOMEONE… I was already a person with inherent dignity, value, and worthiness of sacrifice and respect. It was only once I really understood this that I could play the role of “some thing” (coach, content creator, business owner) without all my “person bits” (ego, mindset, emotions) get in the way. When you are secure in who you are, you can play at being whatever THING you want from a place of confidence and peace. The neglected “superhero trait” you need to adopt

One trait I often find neglected in the discussion of heroes is HUMOR. In the realm of superheroes, some are straight up known for their witty quips like Spiderman or Deadpool. How many times have we seen a scene where the protagonist is caught and getting beat up and the hero makes fun of their captor for having a weak punch? Another example is in the fourth and final Avengers movie when Thanos delivers the famous line of "I am inevitable" and Tony Stark's epic response (which I won't spoil) brings the satisfying climax of a 10-year multi-billion dollar storyline. You might be thinking that these jokes are purely for entertainment and only there for the audience's sake. I'd disagree. Special forces operatives and fighting troops in general are notorious for their often edgy and crass humor. Many massively famous and influential politicians are known for their wit and humor. Trump basically won the hearts of a good chunk of America by hilariously trolling his opponents. Theodore Roosevelt got shot when giving a speech and then continued to deliver his (abbreviated) speech joking "It takes more than that to kill a bull moose!" One of the qualities of the archetypal hero is to "laugh in the face of danger." I wouldn't say this is an EFFECT of being the hero, but a CAUSE that allows one to BECOME a hero. This is because humor is essential for KEEPING FRAME - ESPECIALLY UNDER DURESS. When something goes wrong, you can either panic or keep your cool. For guys who feel “so far behind”

One of the things I've seen from guys of ALL ages is the idea that they are "so far behind." I'll hear this from guys in their 20s as much as I'll hear it from guys in their 60s and 70s. The guys saying this are usually coming from a place of wasting years on inauthentic paths of action. Maybe they've had addictions, bad habits, or simply been on career paths that they didn't like. They get it in their head that even if they COULD get things figured out, they have wasted so much time that it wouldn't even matter. This mindset either leads to an extreme sense of panicked urgency, or a complete sense of depressed apathy. Here's an alternative mindset: You haven't been falling behind, you've been COLLECTING CONTRAST. With every failed experiment or mistake borne of weakness, the authentic path becomes brighter and more obvious through contrast. The lower the valley, the higher the peak. The hotter the forge, the stronger the steel. The things that seem like your greatest curses are the things that hold the keys to your greatest blessings. Sometimes this comes in the form of gratitude. Live years with physical pain, waking pain-free seems like a taste of heaven. Live years stunted by addiction, basic self-care and competence feel like massive wins. But other times this contrast can lead to high-level breakthroughs. For example, I’ve been flopping around on YouTube for 7 years and am only NOW figuring out my path after trying a dozen of other things that didn’t quite “click.” You're not behind, you've just been setting yourself up for an amazing turn around! Three kinds of people (number 3 gets it right)

You can roughly break people down into three categories: reactors, developers, and masters. Reactors are people who basically run on conditioned autopilot. These people don't challenge or change their patterns on purpose. However their previous life experiences programmed them, that's how they operate. They don't take the time to really try and figure out how to improve their situation by improving their behavior. Developers are the people who ARE trying to do that. They want to learn how to shift their habits, mindsets, and behaviors so that they can get a better and better life. This isn't easy or simple though, so developers are trying to figure out how to gain that power. Finally, the masters are the people who have figured it out. To put it simply, masters do what they intend to do. They know how to control their minds, their emotions, and their actions. In the modern world, a master's potential is nearly unlimited. There's only ONE thing that separates people on these levels: how much constructive reflection they've done. Notice I said CONSTRUCTIVE reflection - not fruitless rumination or narcissistic self-obsession. The more times you've observed yourself, found a fault, and made a positive intention to improve - the closer you are to becoming a master. Observe yourself, learn, improve, conquer. Remove THESE habits first

I once knew a guy who wanted to be a writer. The problem was, he couldn't get himself to sit down and write. He'd get spurts where he would outline and maybe draft a few pages… but he'd always end up "getting blocked" and fail to show up and ship anything. It's not that he wasn't serious, he just couldn't get himself to be effective. If I were to talk to that guy today, I'd ask him: what do you do with your free time when you AREN'T writing? If he was being honest, he'd say: Party, watch porn, play videogames, surf the internet. I'd tell him that this was his problem. I'd explain that compared to the instant gratification dopamine highs that he was used to, anything "productive" was going to feel like a slog through hell! I'd go on to let him know that if he just put some time into cutting out all that crap BEFORE he started trying to amp up his writing game, he'd be WAY more effective. If he did that, not only would he be able to build a writing discipline… he could get HOOKED on it to the point where he WANTED to do it. But knowing that guy, he would have ignored me because he would have felt it would "take too long" to fix all of that and he just wanted to get that writing habit! Now the reason I know so much about this guy is because this story is about me. The truth is that sometimes you need to focus on cutting out your bad habits before you can build the good ones you're most excited for. Start with removing your most damaging habits first and replacing them with basic self-care. For example: quit porn and replace it with journaling, daily walks, and planning the following day each evening. Get unstuck from an “identity rut”

Recently in a Vanguard mentoring call, of the members was looking for clarity around how to use the "Law of Identity" (which is one of seven laws I taught in Apex Report #001) to become more productive. The gist of the law is that if you can shift how you identify yourself, you can shift how you behave. He said, "I just can't quite understand how I could use an identity shift to be more productive when I'm NOT a productive person and have never been!" I understand his struggle. Deciding to identify as a productive person when you have a whole lifetime of being unproductive can seem extremely illogical, or potentially even self-deceptive! The mistake our friend was making here was that he was STUCK IN THE PAST. Yes, he was previously NOT productive. He cannot honestly identify his PAST self as a productive man. But there is NOTHING stopping him from deciding WHO HE IS NOW. If we let our past define us, then we'd all still be shitting in diapers and crying for breastmilk! So I told him to f*ck the past and decide to identify as a productive man moving forward! You can decide what kind of man you are at ANY point. When this clicked for him, you could practically hear the lightbulb explode in his brain. Examples: "I'm a highly productive man." "I'm the kind of man who generates abundant wealth." A "Habit Trick" I Learned From Guns

In the manufacturing process, "tolerance" refers to how tightly and neatly pieces of a machined item fit together.  The place I'm most familiar with this concept is in the production of firearms.   If a gun has "tight" tolerances, then the fit of the pieces is more perfect, with very little wiggle room.  If a gun has "loose" tolerances, then the fit of the pieces is less snug, with a bit more room and give. You can oversimplify the practical difference between a tight and loose tolerance firearm like this: Tighter tolerances benefit precision - creating a more accurate gun.  Looser tolerances benefit reliability - because jams are less likely, especially when used more roughly or under less ideal circumstances (dirt, water, lower quality ammo etc.) This idea of "tight vs loose tolerance" applies to our habits as well! If I'm Elon Musk and have lots of discipline and money to pay assistants, I can run a tight tolerance system where I have my whole month blocked out in 15-minute increments. This is the equivalent of a tight tolerance, high-accuracy, target shooting gun that can perform well under competition conditions. If I've got a chaotic family life, low discipline, or am quitting an addiction and need to deal with random cravings… ...I'm probably better off just making a list of the 3-7 things I'd like to get done every day. This is similar to the "go-to-war" gun that can roll around in the dirt and mud and still get the job done. What I Learned From the Death of My Grandfathers

This holiday season I lost both of my grandfathers just a few days apart. Neither were entirely unexpected, but it was still a blow. But in losing the eldest patriarchs of my bloodline, it got me thinking about the idea of masculine legacy. I believe the modern world has put too much emphasis on worldly achievement, especially for men. When I was younger, I internalized this and thought "unless I change the world in some massive way - I'm a complete failure." But to think that way would be accuse these two great men of being failures. Neither of them accomplished anything world-shaking. Their names won't be in any history books. But their kindness, generosity, love and support gave the strength that has allowed two family lines to flourish. When I look at all the goodness that flows out of both sides of my family, and imagine all of that goodness as it expands into future generations… ...it becomes abundantly clear to me that for most men, the greatest legacy they can leave is morally strong and spiritually healthy families. Accomplishing this is no small feat in our corrupt modern world. It is a feat that requires true determination, faith, and strength. Make 2021 your best year ever by DOING LESS

I think most of us massively overestimate how quickly we can really install new habits. From what I've seen, most people approach habit change from a "one to two week" sort of mindset. They go hard for a few days and then gradually taper off to almost nothing by week two. The truth of the matter is that most real habit change takes anywhere from 1-6 months depending on how significant the change is. Starting a gym routine or diet might be a one or two-month affair until it gets locked in (it will likely take longer to get the big results though). Quitting porn or some significant addiction is in the three-month-plus category. The problem is that this reality can be disheartening when you are hoping for an overnight transformation. But once you abandon childish fantasies, you can embrace the truth that you can MASSIVELY improve your life in one year, and COMPLETELY TRANSFORM IT IN THREE. For example: Y1: Quit porn, develop a fitness habit, improve your diet Y2: Cut out videogames & BS time wasters, start building a side business, begin networking/dating Y3: Go full time into your side business and start optimizing and tweaking the stuff you’ve already got going In three years, you could completely transform your body, your career, your income, and your relationships.
