Have you asked your self that question? I know you have.
Speaking fluency is important, but there are other important skills that come before that.
Fluency in English isn't just about being able to speak English.
In fact, you also need to know grammar. Similarly, you should be fluent in listening.
Fluent in listening too!? YES!
Listening comes before speaking in many ways because if you can't hear the word or sounds you want to speak, it will be difficult if not impossible for you to say them.
But there is hope.
Your speaking fluency might not be the main problem: fix your listening, too.
You can do this in many ways.
This podcast episode 51 teaches you a few.
Listen until the end to learn 2 new vocabulary words/phrases AND a sneak preview at next weeks episode.

Today I give you 3 of the best, and often forgotten, American Television (T.V.) shows to watch to improve your English.
What 3 new vocabulary words did you learn from this podcast?
What you'll learn:
Three T.V. shows to watch
More vocabulary words
Improve your listening skills in English
Visit my website at www.paradigmenglish.com this Friday to learn 3 more T.V. shows to watch as well as a list of classic black and modern black (African-American) T.V. shows to begin watching.
Transcript:
"American entertainment is famous across the globe. From T.V. film, and streaming, American sitcoms and cinema are everywhere. But how can you use something so easy as watching the screen to improve your English?
I'm Ashley Rhone from Paradigm English and the podcast Living in English:365. I am going to tell you THREE excellent T.V. shows to watch to improve your English. So, to get started, like this episode, subscribe to this podcast, and get ready to be entertained.
Many of you already know, and probably watch such shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), and they are all fantastic in their own, very different way.
However, me, an English teacher, recommends these three T.V. American T.V. shows to improve your English.
Also, most Americans do not say "T.V. Series" when speaking directly about a show on T.V. We prefer to use say "T.V. Show/Series" unless we are referring to a series that we enjoy.
1) The Golden Girls
Okay, listen. This is one of my favorites. Not only is it hilarious, but the acting is superb. The 'Golden' in title, if you didn't know, is a reference to all of the 4 main characters' age: they're aged 50+. The show is about how 4 older women who, because of very different life experiences, have to learn to live together and the friendship that is created from that. I think this show is great for you not because I like it, as well as millions of Americans, but because each character has a different American dialect which helps you get used to hearing non-standard accents. Also, there are plenty of dialogues that will help you improve your listening skills
2) The Simpsons
This is a T.V. show that my mother wouldn't allow me to watch as a child. Ha! Today, it's one of my favorites. I love it so much that I have even used it to teach grammar points and vocabulary! It's versatile! Okay, okay, enough about me, listen, this show is fantastic for learners. Not only has it been around for more than 3 decades, so you'll never run out of episodes to watch, but it's probably something you watched at some point in your life. This is great because you already have background knowledge about the show, which will help you comprehend the episode. Additionally, there are many different situations and dialogues to increase your vocabulary and listening skills. The Simpsons is an all-around terrific choice for you as you learn English.
3) The Daily Show
it's won numerous awards, has been running for over 2 decades, focuses on political and news satire. Satire, as defined by Merriam-Webster's Learner's Online Dictionary, is "a way of using humor to show that someone or something is foolish, weak, bad, etc. : humor that shows the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc." This use of satire is why The Show has referred to itself as "fake news" in the past. In fact, a 2010 research paper by then undergraduate scholar Michelle Newman stated that, "The Daily Show draws its comedy and satire from recent news stories, political figures, media organizations, and often uses self-referential humor as well."
Why should you watch
This show, as its name implies, is produced Daily. Now, because of COVID19 and the global pandemic of Coronavirus, the show is produced by its host, Trevor Noah, outside of the studio and minus the studio audience. You can catch this show on Comedy Central (CC) and Youtube. This show incorporates many different styles and dialects (the Noah is originally from South Africa). It has familiar topics for those of you that also consume news about world events. Additionally, it allows you to see American humor, which may be a little different than your own country.
Thanks for listening to how to improve your English with American T.V. Shows. I hope you have enjoyed this list. Subscribe to this podcast to get more tips and insights into learning English. I Have A Question
Have you ever wondered why you studied English for so many years, but you still can't understand spoken English? Or, why people can't understand you when you speak in English? Well, today is your lucky day because I will tell you three things you must do to have better English pronunciation AND improve your **vocabulary with a few new words.
Before we get started, hit subscribe and like this video to get more videos on how to improve your English.
1) Sounds
Learn and perfect you English pronunciation by focusing on the sounds. Did you know that there are 44 phonemes in English? Okay, Ashley, but what's a phoneme. Basically, a phoneme is a sound, or a group of sounds. Take for example, vowels and consonants. The English language has 26 letters in its alphabet with 5 of the 26 letters being vowels. Now, here's the tricky thing, there are only those 5 vowels to make up over 40 phonemes. Yikes!
Also, keep in mind the remaining 21 letters called consonants and things can get hairy! Don't worry much, though. Book an individual meeting with me at paradigmenglish.com and I'll help you reduce your accent in English.
Don't forget that there are also many different dialects of English spoken around the world and each is, well, different.
*Bonus: You just learned that English has a lot more vowel sounds in English than the 5 vowels represent, but do you know which vowel sound is the most frequent one in English? Leave your comment below.
2) Stress the stress
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you just don't put the correct sentence or word stress when you're speaking. This can cause the listener to be confused, you embarrassed, and both of you to be frustrated. What a nightmare.
3) Ebb & flow
Many students never learn that English has tones. I know, shocking. This does not mean that English is a tonal language: it's a non-tonal language. But, tone, just as in literature, shows attitude towards something. Unfortunately, many students never learn this and the get it wrong when speaking to others, especially native speakers. Also, intonation is important. It takes time to learn it well, but practice makes perfect.
Lastly, focus on your thought groups when you're speaking as well as reduced and connected speech.
Alright, folks. If you focus on improving your English using these three tips, you're sure to reduce your accent in no time.
Start your journey to better speaking and pronunciation for IELTS, school, or your career today! Happy practicing and see you next time.

In This Lesson
This podcast is for teachers AND learners!
If you are a teacher and are wondering "how to teach online," here is a great example.
If you are a student (learning English online), you will see an example virtual classroom and learn some tips on how to be successful.
Tools Used:
Zoom®
Macbook Pro
Company curriculum
Enthusiasm and biting wit...
A Couple of Things
I used Zoom® to teach online, which is great, but you could use other programs. If you ever learned online before? No problem! Neither had any of these students from Gabon, Japan, Taiwan, China, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. They did a great job!
I explained to them some procedures, rules, and expectations for learning English online, or being an online learner in general, and how to be success in this class. What type of learners are these? These students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are studying abroad, some are pilots (or studying to become one), while others are increasing their knowledge of English to study at a university in the USA.
So, essentially, this class is a college prep. class. We focused on Turn-taking and social movements. We watched two videos to help us visualize AND increase our knowledge of different types of social movements and those who become leaders & followers of one.
Tell Me:
Have you ever joined/created a social movement? What was the outcome?
What other suggestions could you make to students learning online for the first time?
Links to videos referenced:
Social Movement
Julio Diaz
Willie & Yelitza (*Note: the students did not listen/watch this one. I only referenced it and posted it in our virtual classroom homepage called "GEL")
**Sorry, due to copyright laws, I cannot post the book or pages we used to learn about turn-taking in conversation/conversational discourse.

33. Online Teaching Because of COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
How to Teach Online due to Coronavirus
"I have to teach/learn online because of the Coronavirus! HELP!"
So many teachers and students are being forced to teach online due to the Coronavirus pandemic. It's frustrating and scary. I can sympathize. I was the same up until today.
This live podcast details some quick tips on how to teach online, which program(s) to use [*spoiler alert: I prefer Zoom®], how to learn online, and how to structure a lesson.
Don't struggle alone! God is with us and we'll get through this together, brilliant people!

32. The Death of a Legend: Kobe Bryant & The American Death Culture
A few weeks ago, the world lost not necessarily a great person, but a great basketball player. I'm talking about Kobe Bean Bryant (1978-2020). Kobe spent his entire basketball career with the Los Angeles Lakers. I was a Chicago Bulls and Dallas Mavericks fan in my youth, but I digress...
Was Kobe the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time), or does that title and crown belong to Lebron James or Micheal Jordan? In my opinion, Michael Jordan, but whomever you support, the passing of Kobe Bryant alongside his 13 year old daughter--Gianna Bryant-- is tragic and heart wrenching.
In this episode I give props to a great basketball legend, a young life cut too short, and how Americans talk--or don't talk--about death, funerals, and "kicking the bucket."
How did you mourn the loss of Kobe Bryant?
