Modal Verbs in Negotiations
Accompanying blog post: https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/modal-verbs-in-negotiations/Negotiating in English can seem daunting at first, but the Oxford English Dictionary describes negotiation as a “discussion aimed at reaching an agreement”. It’s likely you engage in negotiation in English or your language daily without even thinking about it. Using modal verbs in negotiations can help you express attitude, add more nuance, and remain polite.Negotiating is not just about getting your way. If one side gets their way, then the other side may leave disappointed and discouraged. A successful negotiation leaves everyone satisfied. This is why it’s crucial to make sure to stay polite throughout any negotiations. In today's podcast episode, Lida gives some helpful tips for using modal verbs to negotiate politely in English.____________________________________________________________Find out more about Intrepid English here:https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/Follow us on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/intrepidenglishInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/intrepidenglish/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/IntrepidenglishLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/intrepid-english/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.mx/intrepidenglish/

Tom’s Top 10 Poetry Must-Reads (Part 1)
Accompanying blog post: https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/toms-top-10-poetry-must-reads-part-1/I know it’s an outrageously big-headed thing to do – to quote yourself – but I was asked by the Poetry Question to write about the power of poetry for their continuous essay series on the subject, and, I wrote, back in 2019, a piece I still very much agree with. I said,‘The power of poetry is its timeliness. Poetry endures. It survives the wars, the natural disasters, the harshness of aging. It survives foolish kings and queens, prime ministers and presidents, tsars and popes. It survives dictatorships, genocide, corruption. It survives injustice. It survives cancer. Poetry is everywhere, no matter how much you avoid it. Poetry adapts. Poetry attacks. Poetry breathes. Poetry is fluid. Poetry waits...Poetry travels. Poetry is patient. The power of poetry resides with its inability to be defined.’I quote this not, as they say, to toot my own horn or blow my own trumpet but because it is a good way of summing up my love of poetry and my excitement, therefore, in sharing some of my favourite collections with you. Most of books mentioned below are ones I’ve read in the past five years. I’ve recommended poetry books before, in our very own Novel Writing Course and I can’t not mention our Novels that Changed Our Lives series, in which teachers and students of Intrepid English spoke about the books that shaped them in some way.Book recommendations are among my favourite things to give. I, myself, am a poet and am constantly consuming different voices and deconstructing the construction of language. So, here is the first part of my ten poetry must-reads.____________________________________________________________Find out more about Intrepid English here:https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/Follow us on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/intrepidenglishInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/intrepidenglish/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/IntrepidenglishLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/intrepid-english/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.mx/intrepidenglish/

Water Idioms
Accompanying blog post: https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/water-idioms/Did you know that there are more than 25,000 idiomatic phrases in English? Idioms are used in everyday language to add fluency and description to a sentence. They can be difficult for English learners to understand because the meaning of the idiom often has nothing to do with the individual words within the idiom. For instance, when we describe something as being “like water off a duck’s back”, we are not talking about a wet bird, we mean to say that something, such as criticism, has no affect on a person. Here are five more idioms with water to whet your appetite. 🌊____________________________________________________________Find out more about Intrepid English here:https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/Follow us on social media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/intrepidenglishInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/intrepidenglish/?hl=enTwitter: https://twitter.com/IntrepidenglishLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/intrepid-english/Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.mx/intrepidenglish/

Common British Slang Part 1
Accompanying blog post: https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/common-british-slang-part-1/Here at Intrepid English, we love to help our students to understand all kinds of English. Whether it's formal business English, phrases for exam preparation, or general conversational English. So, when Intrepid English student Tess asked us to teach her some common slang terms, I was more than happy to oblige. So, what is 'slang'? Well, the word itself is a combination of the words 'street' and 'language' and it describes extremely new words that are in fashion. Many of these words enter into the dictionary eventually, but most of them are only used temporarily by the younger generation to talk about the current issues in their lives. What's the best way to learn 'slang'? Well, I encourage students to listen out for words and phrases around them, on the bus, in a shop, on TV or the radio. Note them down and discuss them with your Intrepid English Teacher. This is the number one best way to learn what is common slang now, as it evolves so quickly with new slang words emerging all the time. Today I’m going to explain some common British words and phrases, complete with their meanings and examples.

During these unprecedented times, entertainment is paramount. But something struck me – the longer this situation continues, the longer our favourite TV shows will remain on hold and films will continue to be unmade. That is why books are of the utmost importance. We need new stories. The less I fear.In these uncertain times, where it is recommended we haul ourselves up in our towers, we are relying on sources of entertainment we would otherwise take for granted. Yes, we have Netflix. Yes, we have the Internet. But let’s not forget that the majority of the TV shows and films you’re watching are based on books. Books came first. Welcome to the Intrepid English Podcast
https://intrepidenglish.co.uk/intrepid-english-academy-introduction/ Hello and welcome to the Intrepid English podcast. I’m Lorraine, and I am the Founder of Intrepid English. My amazing team of teachers and I have been writing an English language blog for several years and we were inspired to create this podcast after we received a message from one of our readers named Patricia. She wrote: "I've been a reader of your blog for around 4 months and I really enjoy it. It would be great if you could add audio versions of your articles, as that would make them easier to consume for me and for others. Thereby, I have a favour to ask. Is it possible for you to add an audio version of your articles? It would be very useful for people like me or others who like to listen to your content. It’s so nice to hear from our students, especially when they have great ideas like this! So, thank you, Patricia! When I told my teachers about this, they were more than happy to get involved. In fact, one of our teachers, Gemma, is a radio DJ, so she's used to doing this kind of thing. The first blog post that we have recorded is entitled Burns Night, and it was written and read by Gemma. We hope you enjoy it! You can find the link to this blog in the track description.
