White Horses of the ShamansRebecca Moench, violinJared Oaks, pianoThe music for my short ballet, A Place of Mirrors is inspired by shamanic tradition, traditional shamanic mirrors, and the idea of reflection. This final movement, “White Horses of the Shamans,” is inspired by Walther Heissig’s 1944 account of a female shaman, who indicated that the mirrors are a vehicle for the shamans. The music is somewhat unified by use of a tone row consisting of 10 pitches, which are played in various ways, such as retrograde, inversion, etc. These ideas came about as a result of my friendship and discussions with dancer and choreographer David Arce. The piece was commissioned by Debra Pearse Rogo, director of Mid-Columbia Ballet.

47. Human Stories: Peter Van Der Walt

You won't want to miss this week's episode! Jill interviews Peter Van Der Walt, a South African writer, about his experience coming out during Apartheid South Africa. Jill and Peter talk about having an open mind, global oppression of our LGBTQ+ siblings, and what it means to define your own life. Pete's Advice For Young People:Don't let anyone sell you a vision of the world that disempowers you. Regardless of good motivations, some people will want you to believe that you are at the mercy of people who want to do you harm. They will get you to think about yourself as a victim. I believe it is far better, more useful, more fun, more rational and more moral to view the world as a good place. Sure, you will meet some suffering, some discrimination, some mean people. But you are not at their mercy. Believe in yourself, believe you are empowered - and I believe your future will be as bright as you make it.For older people:See above, but with a sense of urgency.Pete's Website (where you can find his blog and other goodies): www.petervanderwalt.comUnder Fire: The First Fairbridge LGBT Thriller (Kindle and Paperback) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R5QQQW3Brimstone: The Second Fairbridge LGBT Thriller (Kindle and Paperback) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0819TDFRCCheck the website to keep updated, there's more happening all the time ;)
