Replay: Practicing Mindfulness to Minimize Stress & Burnout as a Healthcare Provider, with Teresa McKee, Mindfulness Meditation Facilitator
REPLAY - Originally released on June 21, 2022; I am joined by Teresa McKee, CEO of Work2Live, a transformation and leadership coach, certified mindfulness meditation facilitator, and EFT practitioner. Teresa and I discuss her journey into the mindfulness space, tips & techniques on how we as healthcare providers can integrate mindfulness into our everyday lives to minimize stress and ultimately reduce burnout risk and compassion fatigue.
Combining her training and education, including a B.S. in Business Administration and an M.S. in Psychology specializing in Leadership Coaching Psychology, with her experience of over 35 years as a business consultant, Teresa integrates behavioral science with results-oriented processes to help executives and teams achieve their goals. She facilitates workshops, webinars and online trainings and is a frequent motivational speaker for various live and online events.
After years of observing people’s angst in individual coaching sessions and in group trainings, she realized that the one practice that could change everyone’s state of being was mindfulness. What began as monthly recordings for hospital-based home visiting teams to listen to while driving between client sessions turned into A Mindful Moment podcast, now produced in both English and Spanish. Her goal is to help people learn how to live a more enriching life with less stress and more contentment. She has also recently introduced online mindfulness classes to coaching professionals in the United States and Canada and offers online mindfulness courses through Work2Live.
Teresa is a member of the Mindfulness Society Global Institute, and is also an avid volunteer in the Los Angeles area, believing in community strength and in giving back. She learned her broadcasting skills volunteering for a public affairs radio program, Sojourner Truth, from 2010 to 2013. She has served as Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the My Stuff Bags Foundation since 2014 and was a member of the finance committee for Maternal Mental Health NOW from 2016-2022.
Her new book, Dynamic Response Ability, will be released by Balboa Press in 2022.

Replay: How we can Change the Culture Within Healthcare to Sustain Ourselves and Avoid Burnout, with Dr. Joe Sherman, Physician Coach
REPLAY - Originally released on Feb 8, 2022; I am joined by Dr. Joe Sherman, a practicing physician for over 35 years, a certified physician coach, an educator, and a former administrator. Joe guides organizations to shift outdated workplace culture into a collective leadership model and assists physicians in one-on-one coaching and group retreats to deliver quality care, succeed in leadership roles, and rediscover fulfillment in their careers. We discuss Joe’s journey in healthcare including what has kept him in the profession for over 35 years, what led to his burnout, his anxiety and depression, and what he is doing to change the culture in the field so that others have a positive experience as physicians.
About Joe: “In 2009, after spending 4 years living and working with a mission organization in Bolivia, I returned to the U.S. and my career as a pediatrician at an academic health center. I soon found the institutional, educational, and patient care demands placed upon me to be overwhelming. This eventually led to burnout and a temporary departure from clinical medicine.
After a year of reflection, discernment, and support from family and friends, I was able to identify my core values and integrate them into my future career decision-making. I returned to part-time pediatric practice while developing the skills to accompany other physicians, individually and in groups, to re-discover their passion for medicine.
Having experienced burnout, myself, I understand the day-to-day struggles health professionals face in trying to provide quality care to their patients while also dealing with the systemic dysfunction of healthcare institutions.
I am now a consultant and coach to individuals and healthcare organizations in the areas of burnout mitigation, leadership, and provider well-being. I am a trained retreat facilitator with the Center for Courage & Renewal, a Master Certified Professional Development Coach with the Physician Coaching Institute, and member of the International Coaching Federation.”
Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:
What the systematic root of the problem in the healthcare field is and how we can address it
How you can make a change on an individual level to get closer to your values & what institutions can be doing to care for their employees
Why investing in your own health & setting boundaries is critical for practitioners and their patients

2022 Top Replay: Working in Healthcare with PTSD: A Nurses’ Perspective on Managing Mental Illness with RN and Author, Marcie Resendes
REPLAY - Listen in to one of our top episodes from 2022!
Originally released on February 1, 2022: I am joined by Marcie Resendes, Registered Nurse and Author of, ‘If The Brain Could Stop What The Eyes have Seen.’ Marcie shares her story of overcoming being diagnosed with PTSD, how she lives with it and manages it day to day. We also discuss methods of how we can protect ourselves against burnout, leading to mental illness, and overwhelm in the workforce.
About Marcie: “I am a 42-year-old wife, mother to three beautiful children ages 17, 15 and 6. I am a Registered Nurse and proud to say I have been for 21 1⁄2 years. The nursing school Diploma Program at St. Clair College was a struggle, but I had a strong heart and passion to be a nurse; a good kick in the butt from my dad when I was 19 pushed me through.
During the summer of 1998, I volunteered at the Pelee Island Medical Clinic.I worked beside two wonderful nurses who allowed me to observe clinics, minor traumas, and what nursing in an isolated area is. I witnessed head injuries after drunken falls, fractures of bones, sprains and strains, as well as general labs and medical checkups. I loved the opportunity to gain this experience in nursing. It was totally different than at the hospital. I was able to observe how a team (EMS, Police, and Nursing) work together to get the job done. June 18, 1999 was the day my dreams came true: I graduated on the Principal’s Honour Roll. Finally, I could do what I had strived to do: take care of the sick and make them well.
Growing up I had been raised to treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO of the company. I was told that each team member in a company has a vital job to do each and every day to keep the company running. Little did I know that after 19 1⁄2 years of caring for the sick, wounded, critically injured, dying and mentally unstable would leave me with wounds unrecognizable to the human eye. I attended an appointment with my Nurse Practitioner on January 10, 2019, and that’s when my life changed. I thought I was having a simple return to work appointment after a bout of influenza the week before, but it turned out to be so much more. When Bonnie the Nurse Practitioner walked in and observed me, her first statement changed my whole life: “You Have PTSD”.
Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:
What signs she noticed when something was wrong & what actions she took
How to incorporate self-care not only to your home life but to your work life
What made her decide to write her book and the impact it’s had on others
How we can better the well-being of providers in healthcare

Recognizing Physician Burnout & How To Recover From It, with Dr. Susan Landers
In this week’s episode, I am joined by Dr. Susan Landers, author, speaker & retired neonatologist. Susan enjoys discussing physician burnout, how she got there, and ways to treat & recover from it.
Susan is a retired neonatologist who worked full-time in the NICU for thirty-four years and raised three children to young adulthood. She served on the faculty of two medical schools, and served in private practice for over twenty years. She achieved many academic and professional accomplishments, and she also encountered challenges along the way, both in her career and in her mothering. There was one particularly difficult event during her midlife, after the birth of her third child, that she had to endure. However, it propelled her to make choices and career changes.
She loves to tell stories that reassure younger mothers to know that they, too, can be a “good enough mother” especially if they work full-time. She supports mothers with her social media posts and her blog. She also cautions physicians and nurses - who might be experiencing serious burnout – about the ways in which it affects their lives and their relationships, and the many ways to treat and recover from burnout. Her new book is “So Many Babies: My Life Balancing a Busy Medical Career and Motherhood.”
We discuss Susan’s own personal journey of experiencing burnout, how she came to recognize it, and how she recovered from it. This experience led her to find her own voice and now works to empower the voices of other physicians on the front lines to find their fulfillment.
Tune in to this week’s episode to learn:
How she actually changed her practice to become more family-friendly & flexible
The moment Susan noticed her symptoms of burnout & knew something was wrong

He created an apparel company, Tier Response Apparel which highlights mental health conversations and supports 1st Responders (ALL), including: medical personnel, corrections, and the military to provide funds to services and organizations that deliver programs and services to 1st Responders and their families. Practicing Mindfulness to Minimize Stress & Burnout as a Healthcare Provider, with Teresa McKee, Mindfulness Meditation Facilitator
In this week’s episode, I am joined by Teresa McKee, CEO of Work2Live, a transformation and leadership coach, certified mindfulness meditation facilitator, and EFT practitioner.

How we can Change the Culture Within Healthcare to Sustain Ourselves and Avoid Burnout, with Dr. Joe Sherman, Physician Coach
In this week’s episode, I am joined by Dr.

Working in Healthcare with PTSD: A Nurses’ Perspective on Managing Mental Illness with RN and Author, Marcie Resendes
In this week’s episode, I am joined by Marcie Resendes, Registered Nurse and Author of, ‘If The Brain Could Stop What The Eyes have Seen.’ Marcie shares her story of overcoming being diagnosed with PTSD, how she lives with it and manages it day to day.
During the summer of 1998, I volunteered at the Pelee Island Medical Clinic. I worked beside two wonderful nurses who allowed me to observe clinics, minor traumas, and what nursing in an isolated area is. I witnessed head injuries after drunken falls, fractures of bones, sprains and strains, as well as general labs and medical check ups. I loved the opportunity to gain this experience in nursing. It was totally different than at the hospital. I was able to observe how a team (EMS, Police, and Nursing) work together to get the job done. June 18, 1999 was the day my dreams came true: I graduated on the Principal’s Honour Roll. Finally I could do what I had strived to do: take care of the sick and make them well.
I attended an appointment with my Nurse Practitioner on January 10, 2019, that’s when my life changed.

GoHere App
This free app was created by Crohn's and Colitis Canada. The GoHere initiative partnered with businesses and government buildings to identify accessible washrooms across Canada. This app is a wonderful tool for travelers. Simply input your destination and the app will display accessible washrooms along your route. It also provides a digital Washroom Access Card to quickly explain the medical need to access washrooms.

Crohn’s and Colitis Initiatives
Crohns and Colitis’s advocates against the non-medical switch to biosimilar drugs in the treatment of IBD. The government of Ontario is planning to switch IBD patients onto biosimilar drugs without physician consultation. While we are not opposed to the use of biosimilars for new patients, switching the medication of a patient stable on a biologic can cause a disruption in the patients health. Research has demonstrated more than 1 in 2 people with IBD have experienced changes in their health after being switched to a different medication. Given that our healthcare system is under immense pressure due to the pandemic, we do not feel this is the time to be switching patients to a biosimilar drug and placing additional stress on the health care system.
Ontarians who support us can add their name to an online petition against the biosimilar switch here:

Ontarians who believe patient-doctor choice matters and would like to participate in our letter-writing campaign, can enter their name, email address and postal code into the form below. A letter will be generated and sent to the participants local MPP to indicate they are opposed to the non-medical switch.
