Can’t Keep Up 跟不上 in Chinese
One of the meanings of 跟 (see pronunciation and definitions below) has to do with ‘following closely.’ When you add 不 and 上 after it, it means you can’t keep up. The sequence of tones (first tone ⇾ second tone ⇾ fourth tone) make it particularly easy to say and fit with the emotion of someone who is struggling with keeping up.To read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:Can’t Keep Up 跟不上 in Chinese

Experiences That Make Me Feel Very Afraid 那些我想起來就覺得驚心動快的經驗 in Chinese
I had a rather horrific and surreal freeway experience on my way to my Chinese lesson a couple of weeks ago. A car ahead of me spun wildly out of control, probably going 65 – 70 miles per hour. It whipped back and forth across the freeway while halfway spinning this way and that.I was far enough behind to slow down and stay out of the way, but the out-of-control car didn’t come to a stop until it was about 20 yards in front of me, the next lane over and facing sideways! Then, it started to quickly pull out in front of me, the driver probably thinking she might be rammed from the side by on coming traffic. However, everyone behind me had slowed to a stop, too. Finally, she came to a complete stop and we all slowly passed. I imagine she went home and cried.I couldn’t concentrate until I told my tutor about it. As soon as she heard it she said, 「一顆老鼠屎壞了一鍋粥!」To read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:Experiences That Make Me Feel Very Afraid 那些我想起來就覺得驚心動快的經驗 in Chinese

What is Happiness 什麼是幸福?
Every language has particular ways you can play with it. The character of the Chinese language makes it easy and normal to make up words. The lack of filler words makes it easier to construct sayings in short patterns. My tutor did this recently when she was discussing life with someone. It is not an ancient Chinese philosophy per se, but she did write a poem that is classically Chinese. To read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:What is Happiness 什麼是幸福?

Available 有空,沒事,有錢,可以用,有賣,空缺 in Chinese
Sometimes English words seem vague to native Chinese speakers. Most of you have learned that there is no direct translation for “yes” and “no” in Chinese. Answers to questions are given by using the verbs involved in the question. The word “available” is similar. There is no Chinese equivalent. In fact, my Chinese tutor told me it was challenging for her to understand the English word “available,” because it seems rather vague and is used in ways that don’t seem connected from a Chinese viewpoint. To read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:Available 有空,沒事,有錢,可以用,有賣,空缺 in Chinese

Why do Chinese people choose English names?Every Chinese person I have met has had an English name. Whether they were living in Taiwan, living in the United States, or on a cruise ship, each one of them has introduced themselves by their English name. They would only tell me their Chinese name when I asked. I would try to say it, and would sometimes get it correct, but they seemed to want me to use their English name.I think this is partly because the tones are so important in Chinese. Chinese BoPoMoFo Stickers for My Computer Keyboard
I have been using bopomofo more in my Chinese learning lately. In case you haven’t heard of it, it is a phonetic system for Chinese sounds that was designed to teach Chinese-speaking children how to read.I wrote a few weeks ago about how using bopomofo helps my brain switch to Chinese more thoroughly. When I posted that blog, one of my daughters sent me a link to some keyboard bopomofo stickers she had looked at. It didn’t take me long to decide to buy some.To read more go to:Chinese BoPoMoFo Stickers for My Computer Keyboard

A Simple BoPoMoFo Chart Helps Me Learn Chinese
Why I switched to bopomofoThe first year or so, I stuck to pinyin for learning about Chinese pronunciation. I made some progress, but when I moved back to the USA, I found another, local native speaking Chinese tutor. When she often lapsed into using the bopomofo phonetic representation that she had learned in grade school in Taiwan, I noticed it seemed to flip a switch in my brain. Using the bopomofo kept my brain in Chinese-mode and made me more aware of the distinct Chinese pronunciation of the sounds represented. To read more go to: A Simple BoPoMoFo Chart Helps Me Learn Chinese

We Discuss Buying a Car 討論買一部車子 in Chinese
As I promised, here is what I wanted to tell my Chinese tutor I was discussing with my husband. She had also just given me the assignment of writing out a conversation in Chinese, in order to practice using the authentic conversational sounds she had been teaching me more about. I choose a representation of our conversation about buying a car. The original conversation was actually in English, as my husband is not learning Chinese (although he fakes it quite humorously sometimes in the background during a lesson). So, I did my best to base the Chinese version on what we were talking about, then my Chinese tutor corrected a couple of things and here it is! 老公:我在想關於為妳買一部小車子呦。(老公):(我)(在)(想)(關於)(為)(妳)(買)(一部)(小)(車子)(呦)We Discuss Buying a Car 討論買一部車子 in Chinese(lǎo gōng): (wǒ) (zài) (xiǎng) (guān yú) (wèi) (nǐ) (mǎi) (yī bù) (xiǎo) (chē zi.) The Grammar of Chinese Color: When to Use 藍色的 or 藍色
Just like in English, there are ways of saying things in Chinese that are basically the same, with very subtle differences in connotation. For instance, in my new children’s story, 藍色魚 (translated The Blue Fish), the use of the description of “blue” for the fish varies slightly along the way . Here are some sentences to help explain: To read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:The Grammar of Chinese Color: When to Use 藍色的 or 藍色

Just About To 正要 in Chinese
Last week, my tutor introduced me to a very helpful phrase and grammar structure for Chinese. The gist of the English translation is:“just when (someone) was going to proceed to do _(this)_,_(this other thing)_happened (to interrupt).” We both made up several sentences using this, which I hope you find both useful for reinforcing the concept and having fun creating your own sentences. To read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:Just About To 正要 in Chinese

The Dangerous Missing Foot 危險走失的腳丫子 in Chinese
This foot was apparently added, rather than lost, in the translation. In fact, the Chinese characters on the sign in question, found by someone while hiking in China and posted at engrish.com, don’t say anything directly about feet. Part of the problem is that which is universal to all signs. Wording on signs is abbreviated. The literal translation of the Chinese characters on the sign is as follows... to read more, including Chinese characters and diagrammed translations, go to:The Dangerous Missing Foot 危險走失的腳丫子 in Chinese
