In this Episode, Naho and Michael chat about Show and Tell in Japan. For Naho’s class project, she did some research on recycling in Germany. Pretty interesting system they have there. Check it out…we hope you like it! 皆さま、いつもPodcast を聞いてくださり、ありがとうございます。 今回の娘の話は、日本の公立小学校の4年生の授業で行われる、学習発表会についてです。 39人のクラスメイトがグループに分かれ、先生からそれぞれのグループに課題が与えられ、それぞれが、そのトピックについて調べて発表します。 メイントピックは、ゴミ問題。 娘のグループは、「外国のゴミへの取り組み事情」でした。 娘は、インターネットで、ドイツがゴミ問題に取り組む先進国であることを調べ、そのユニークな取り組みを発表しています。 日本の公立小学校でも、自分達で調べて発表するという授業が行われるようになりました。 今までの、日本の公立小学校では、受け身の授業が多かったと思いますが、時代の流れとともに、子供達が自分で考え行動することが重要視され、指導されるようになったんだなぁと嬉しく思いました。 マザーグースの歌も、娘の独自のメロディーで紹介しています。 マザーグースの歌詞は、子供だけでなく、大人にとっても意味の分からない箇所が多いと思いますが、娘の歌を聴いていると、意味が分からなくても歌っているだけで、その楽しさが伝わってきます。 ぜひ、その楽しさを感じていただけると嬉しいです。

Also, Join Noriko every Friday night at 10:15pm (Japan Standard Time) on Instagram @Happy_pitan to learn and practice reading aloud! 皆さんこんにちは。 いつもpodcastを聞いてくださってありがとうございます。 この度、11月17日より、Instagramのライブにて、毎週金曜日午後10時15分から、約30分のリズム音読プログラムを始めることにいたしました。 (Instagram account:@Happy_pitan) インターネットのおかげで、日本においても、洋書を入手することが簡単になり、多くのお母様が我が子のために英語の本を買って、家庭で読むようになりました。 Instagramでも、多くの方が、素晴らしい洋書を紹介してくださっています。 ただ最近、私がいただくダイレクトメールの中には、こんなご相談が多くなりました。 洋書の音読するのが良いのは分かっているけれど、果たして自分の音読が、我が子の英語のために、本当に役立っているのだろうか？ 英語の音読に自信がない…という不安から、読むことを躊躇してしまっている方もいらっしゃいます。 そしてまた、私の娘の音読を聞いてくださった方からは、どうやって、いつから絵本のない本をあんな風に読めるようになっていったのか？単語はいつどれくらい勉強して覚えたのか？という質問も多くいただきます。 (実際に、娘は、英会話教室へ通ったことも、もちろん英検のために英単語を勉強したことはなく、スペルを書く練習も全くしておりません。そういった点からも、全て、リズム音読と歌で身につけた英語と言えるでしょう。) よく考えてみると、私自身も、英語の音読の仕方を教わった経験はありません。なので娘にも、もちろん音読の仕方を教えた覚えはありません。 つまり、どうやったら、音読を上達させられるのかというのは、私にとっても非常に大きな疑問でした。 私は、語学の専門家ではありませんし、英語の音読はその人の個性が作り出すものなので、道が1つではないと思っています。 ただ、娘の音読を観察していて、もしかしたら、これこそが、絵本のない本を読めるようになる音読スキルにつながる鍵なのかなぁと思うことが見つかってきました。 そして、音読できることが、言葉の定着につながり、勉強しなくても、かなりの英語力を身につけられる道を作っていくことを感じています。 そして、それを娘に話したところ、彼女もYES!!と頷きました。 それがリズムです。 それを教えてくれたのが、ライムです。 会話をする時にも、もちろんリズムがありますが、文章を音読する時にこそ、このリズムが大切な役割を果たします。 今回のPodcastでは、日本語を勉強していらっしゃるMichael先生に、逆の質問をしました。すると先生も、日本語を話すより、日本語の文章を読む事は、非常に難しいとおっしゃっていました。 リズムのある音読ができたら、音読することが、今よりちょっと楽しくなると思います。 私が娘から学んだ、リズム音読のコツを、番組で、皆様にお伝えできたらいいなぁと思っています。 Instagramのライブは、皆様の声を直接お伺いすることができないのですが、ライブ中にコメントしていただけると、スクリーンにコメントが表示されますので、ぜひ、皆様からのコメントや、アイデアなどいただけるとありがたいです。私から、たくさん質問しますので、どんどん参加してくださいね。 英語の山をハイキング。 ハイキングコースは登る人の分だけ、何百通もあります。 なので、音読の上達方法も、もちろん様々にあると思っています。 ただ、娘の音読を聞いて、「これは楽しそう。ちょっとこの方法でやってみようかなぁ」と思われた方は、ぜひ聞いてみてください。 コンセプトは、子供に戻って、リズムを感じて歌ってみよう…です。??? 皆様のご参加をお待ちしております。

This week, Noriko and Michael continue their chat from last time about about podcasts and English listening. We’ll let you know why the news isn’t the best thing for your English and also introduce you to Michael’s podcast. We hope you like it! Podcast 11では、世界中で放送されている英語学習者のためのPodcastの種類を述べた後、なぜ英語だけで私たちがpodcastを放送しているのかを説明していました。 その後、幼い頃から英語をたくさん聴いて育った娘には、私とは違う脳の構造があることも説明しています。 私のように、大人になってから英語を第二言語として学習した人の脳には、母国語という大きな袋の中に、第二言語である英語が存在しているのに対し、(Michael先生は、その脳をアボカドに例えています?) 幼い頃から英語をたくさん聴いて、母国語と同じように育てられた子供には、まるで卵の中に2つの卵黄があるような形で英語が存在していることです。 バイリンガルの脳を持つ子供は、英語日本語と使い分けを意識しないで言葉を発することが多いため、特に幼い頃は、自分が英語を話しているのに日本語を話していると思い込んでいたりすることもあり、周りの子供たちに何を言っているかわからないと誤解されることもあったように思います。 第二言語として英語を習得している人が、英語を上達させるには、脳の中の英語域を大きくし、外から入ってきた英語が、なるべく早く英語域に届くようにすることが必要だと思います。 その部分が大きくなればなるほど、英語に対して英語で反応することも、少しずつですが、容易になってくると思います。 そのためにも、Michael先生が言うように、あえて英語のみの母国語のない放送で、しかも、誰かと誰かが話している会話を中心としたpodcastを聴く事は、英語のCommunication能力を育てるために、とても有効だと言えるでしょう。 エピソード12においても、Podcastの種類について述べていますが、今回はMichael先生が行っているpodcastについても詳しく述べています。 ConversationスタイルのPodcastの良いところは、実際の会話と同じように、podcastを作っている人たちも、その会話がどんなふうに展開していくか、全て把握できないということ。 たとえネイティブの人同士であっても、相手の言っている意味がよくわからなかったり、間違った英語を使って話したりすることがあること。 また、私とマイケル先生のpodcastのように、ノンネィティブとネイティブの会話においては、miscommunicationも非常に多く、その度に、それについてお互いに質問をし合って、理解をしながら番組を作っていることなど。 それからマイケル先生の番組では、彼が1人で、2役3役を行うため、1人で行っている番組にもかかわらず、会話表現を紹介していますが、やはり、それが女性の声を真似して言うところを聞くと、多少、不自然な響きもある事を伝えています。?? その後、英語も話す人それぞれに、話し方やニュアンスなど、特徴があり、同じ人の声をずっと聴き続けると、その人の声はなんとなく聞き取りやすくなってくる現象が起きることを説明しています。 私にはフランス人の友人がいますが、彼女の話す英語を理解できるからといって、別のフランス人の話す英語を理解することはできなかった…というエピソードも述べています。 日本語にも、話す人それぞれの個性が出ます。英語も同じです。 その後また、どんなトピックに興味があり、興味のあることを英語で聞くことが、とても有効であることを述べるとともに、一方的に情報を送ってくれる番組だけでなく、会話表現を聞くことができる会話のある番組がとても有効であることも、Michael先生が述べています。 CNNのニュースを勉強のための英語として聞くのは有効ですが、コミュニケーションのための英語を学んでいるのであれば、ニュースの英語だけを聞いていると、不自然な英語をずっと聞いていることになるので、ぜひ会話表現のある番組を聴いてくださいという強いメッセージもいただきました。 そして最後に、英語を学びたいからといって簡単に海外旅行することもできず、また留学など、仕事があるからとても無理だと思っている英語学習者が非常に多いことを述べ、母国において、英語学習をどのように効率的に進められるかについて述べています。 特にコミュニケーションのための英語スキルを上達させるためには、同じ母国語を話す者同士が、ゲーム感覚で、勇気を出して英語だけで会話する時間を設けることが、実はとても有効であることも説明しています。 そして、家庭で親子でするなら、短いフレーズを毎日使い続けることから始めてはどうかという提案をしています。 今回の、11 、12のpodcastは、内容が重複しているところもありますが、基本的に大人向けの内容になっています。 聞き取りにくい箇所もあると思いますが、何度も聞いていると、何となく伝えたい内容が分かってくると思います。 もし興味を持っていただける方がいましたら、この日本語訳を読んでいただき、その後、もう一度podcastを聴いてみてください。

We hope you like it! 皆さんこんにちは。 今回のpodcastの内容は、親御様向けになっています。 . 英語で話すだけのpodcastを聴いていても、内容がよくわからないし、どんなふうにpodcastを聞いたら、より効果的に英語学習できるのかな…というお話を、いろいろな方から伺っていたので、今回、取り上げることになりました。 . 英語学習者にとって、Podcastの番組を大きく分けると3つになると思います。 . 1つ目は、Michael先生が作っているような、英語のプロフェッショナルの方が英語のフレーズやグラマー、単語について、ネイティブの視点から、世界中の英語学習者に向けて作られている番組。 . こういった番組は、実は世界中に、ものすごくたくさんあります。 正直選ぶのが難しいなぁと思う方は、まずMichael先生の番組を1週間、聞き続けてみてはいかがでしょうか。 彼の声は、日本人にはとても聞きやすく、スピードも少々遅めになっていると思います。 同じ声を聞き続けると、耳がその声になれ、その人の声だと不思議と聞き取れるようになっていくのがわかると思います。 . TOEICなどの資格試験は、その声も資格試験用の声になっているため、なかなか生身の人間が自分に話しかけているような感覚にはなれないものですが、Michael先生のレッスンは、まるで目の前で彼が話しているような感覚になれると思いますので、もし、特に聞いてみたい番組が見つからない場合は、ぜひMichael先生のpodcastをお勧めします。myhappyenglish.com . 2つ目は、日本語を母国語とする英語学習者に向けて作られている番組で、こちらは、作成者が、日本語を母国語と同じように理解しているので、日本語と英語両方で、非常に親切に、文化の違いから、実際のネイティブは、どんな時そのフレーズを使うのかなど、そして、同じ言葉でも受け取り方が違うことなどを紹介してくれているものです。 . 私のように、海外にいた経験が少ないものにとっては、聞くたびに勉強になることばかりで、ゆっくりした時間ができると、まとめて聴いて勉強しています。 日本人として、英語の知らない知識を深めるためには、この2つ目の番組はとても有益だと思います。 . 3つ目は、ネイティブの方が2人で会話をしている番組です。 世界中の英語学習者の疑問、質問に対して、2人で例を出しながら、丁寧に説明しているものになります。 1つ目のレッスンとは異なり、2人の方が会話をしながら進めていく内容になるので、ネイティブの方でも、会話をしているときには、文法的にちょっとおかしいかなと思う英語を話したりするんだなぁと感じ、資格のための英語と、コミュニケーションのための英語は違うんだなと、ほっとされると思います。 . ただ、ネイティブの会話のスピードは当然速いため、リスニングが苦手だなと思っている方には、少々ハードルが高いかもしれません。 ずっと聴いていると、まるで自分がアメリカのニューヨーク?にある、スターバックスにでもいて、2人の女性が話している隣で、盗み聞きしているような感覚になるかもしれません。 私のように、実際に外国に旅行に行くことがなかなか難しい英語学習者にとっては、こういった番組は、まるで外国にいるような疑似体験ができるという意味では、とてもオススメです。 . さて、私が娘とマイケル先生とやっているこのpodcastは、実は、この3つのどれにも当てはまりません。 私の英語はネイティブではありませんし、娘も私も100%日本人で、娘は外国に1度も行ったこともありません。 私の英語が遅いため、マイケル先生の英語はさらに遅くなっていると思います。 . それでももし、私がこの番組を皆さんにお勧めできる理由があるとしたら、それは、たった1つ。 発音が上手じゃなくても、知っている単語の数が少なくても、一生懸命コミュニケーションを取ろうとすれば、自分の伝えたいことが相手に伝わるんだなぁと、番組を聴いた方が、感じてもらえることだと思います。 キャリアのための英語ではなく、コミュニケーションのための英語に必要なのは、英語の知識以上に、相手の伝えたいと思っている事を推測する力だと、感じていただけると思います。 . ぜひ一度、聞いてみてください。 もし一度では内容がわからなかったら、何度か同じ番組を聴いてみてください。 そして私の必死で話す英語に、どうか笑ってホッとしてください。?? それから、娘の番組を聞いて、びっくりしてください。 発音にしても、アメリカンジョークを理解できる英語力にしても、はるかに親を超えていると、私は思っています。 . 家庭英語には魔法があります。 英語教室の先生にはできない、親にしかできない魔法があります。 子供と英語を楽しめる、そんな家庭が全国に増えていけば、日本の英語教育は大きく変わると思います。 皆さん、ぜひ一緒に、英語山のハイキングを続けましょう。 Instagramには支え合える仲間がいます。

In this episode, Noriko and Michael talk about the elephant in the room. This idiom, “the elephant in the room,” means a topic that is something we should talk about but, nobody is willing to talk about, because they are little uncomfortable talking about it. The elephant that we are going to talk about in this episode is competition. We also talk about standardized testing; both the importance of it, and in some cases, why it may be unnecessary. We also chat about how someone’s test score can improved significantly when they focus more on speaking and using English than focusing on practicing for the test. Welcome to Episode 2. Today, Noriko talks about how things got started with Naho and her adventure using and having fun with English at home.
