107 Turning My Biggest Fear Around
In 2015 my career was building the momentum I had worked so hard for. Opportunities seemed to be flowing when I received one of the hardest pieces of information to digest. I learned I was sick with Lymes' disease; a condition that can be chronic and that the medical industry still has much to learn about. It was one of my biggest fears to be 'knocked out' from my dance career. At the same time I learned one of the greatest lessons, which I spoke about at Jojo Diggs' Im-Power-Meant Event: The Power Of Sitting On The Bench. This episode covers the recording of the first time I shared so openly about my experience with the illness and the way it ultimately shifted my career for the better. The talk is followed by a Q and A where I answer questions around balance, energy maintenance, and my background as a personal trainer. I get vulnerable in this one, and after 3.5 years of having others open to me on the DanceSpeak sofa, I thought it was time to share this vital piece of my journey. Other episodes to check out with this one are episode 97 (a panel from the Im-Power-Meant weekend), episode 91 (Jojo Diggs: Deepening Your Relationship with Self), and episode 15 (the original Jojo Diggs interview where she shares about her unbelievable journey with dance).

43 Adrian 'DJ DUBZ' Wiltshire - The Brilliant Mind Of A Creative Producer On Perseverance, Versatility, the AmountBoyz, And... Bowling Philosophy
Episode 43 of DanceSpeak brings you the the intriguing renaissance man: Adrian "DJ DUBZ" Wiltshire. I met Adrian around 15 years ago, taking his Hip-Hop class in New York City. Since then, he has gone on to dance/choreograph/assist/DJ with such artists/on films including Dreamgirls, Stomp The Yard, Ariana Grande, Fergie, Straight Outta Compton, and way way more. What hyped me up the most about sitting down with Adrian, is that not only does he wear so many hats, but with each aspect of his career, he achieves EXCELLENCE. For instance, within less than 3 years of becoming a DJ, he became tour DJ for Ariana Grande. You just can't beat that. Adrian walks me through his process as he went from dancer to choreographer, and worked his way into the DJ world, with a major overlap occurring in his dance life. He also goes in depth as to what had him start booking consistently as a dancer, what he recommends nowadays for dancers (particular the guys out there), fatherhood, his love for bowling, what a 'day in the life' looks like, and... well... way way more! I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get to the top of their field, to anyone whom wears multiple hats in their profession, to my entrepreneurs out there, and to my folks whom like getting motivated around building what they want in their lives!

88 Creating A Breathtaking Career And Staying Zen During Your Biggest Opportunities With Mel Mah
Welcome to episode 88 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Mel Mah. As a dancer, credits include Janet Jackson, Justin Bieber, Kanye West, Britney Spears, and more. As Mel has been pursuing directing, in addition to her own projects, she recently assisted the director on the film: The Hate U Give. That's a big deal y'all. This episode covers stories and insights from Mel's experiences as a professional dancer, her passion for mindfulness as a yoga teacher, her journey as a film director, her business life with You Got This Girl, and, life lessons as a human being. From Mel's dance life, she shares what she did to stay working and empowered during the 'slow seasons' as well as her choice to drastically change her look, even if it meant booking less work. We then explore Mel's choice to transition out of dance and into the film world, even if it meant turning down a potential second tour experience with Janet Jackson. Mel shares some of her favorite takeaways from touring with Janet Jackson for over a year (again, before diving completely into film). Then, we get into the FILM journey and how she knew when/that it was time to transition into a new role. Beneath all of her stories in dance and film, Mel's path as a yoga teacher intersects and plays an important role in her success and staying grounded. I almost feel like I'm writing a novel with this blurb... but we cover so much (and in a relatively short time)... there's also Mel's life as a business owner with You Got This Girl (YGTG). Mel shares about this important company, overcoming a split with her business partner, and how she ultimately had and continues to have it all work. And... we talk about LOVE. I had to ask about it, as Mel does it all and also opens up about the positive influence her hubby has had on her professional life, and I feel this is something we need to hear and can be inspired by! If you're still reading, you are awesome. This interview is a gem that I am excited to share.

31 Alan 'Phlex' Kirk Part 1 - Entrepreneur At 8, Self-Taught, And Redefining The Work Ethic It Takes For A Fruitful Career
DanceSpeak Episode 31 gives a rare look into how narrow opportunity and not fitting in can ultimately cultivate an unstoppable spirited figure in the entertainment industry. Alan Kirk, also known as Phlex, has credits including Beyonce, Britney Spears, The Dream, Rihanna, and work that has been featured on America's Best Dance Crew, SYTYCD, and on stages across the globe. Phlex is the ultimate self-starter and it soon becomes clear that his level of hard-work is difficult, if not impossible to match. Phlex began as a child who taught himself dance and started his own crew so that him and his friends had an outlet to do what they loved. A few years later he auditioned and was accepted to an agency in St. Loius. Years later, after packing himself and his belongings into a car, he auditioned and broke into the world of television by appearing as a contestant on the Wade Robson Dance Project. Phlex openly shares about the successes and disappointments he experienced as he moved his career to Hollywood. We begin gaining insight on what key elements are nurtured in Phlex's successful peer group. We also receive a cautionary tale of what can happen when one falls into a darker path that some dancers may have been warned about. Ultimately, Part I of the Phlex interview will inspire you and move you to your core while providing important knowledge on creating your own path and succeeding in the dance world.

Welcome to episode 132 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Marissa T. Schaeffer (Licensed Physical Therapist and NCSA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist). Of course, I just had to ask about her experience giving cross-training and treatments for Ailey dancers. Welcome to episode 121 of the DanceSpeak Podcast with Carlos Neto (Creative Dir. for World of Dance, Broadway Dance Center + Peridance + Alvin Ailey faculty member, Circolombia on Broadway, and more). First off, it was tough choosing which credits to put between those parentheses, because Carlos' intentional work is known by different people depending on the country (e.g. our UK listeners would've appreciated if we put the credit he has from London's West End). Secondly, did we just digress? Our excitement for having Carlos on the podcast has to do with his multi-layered success. Carlos has the story of immigration, not once, but two times in his life. He has worked as a professional in three countries, on two continents, managed to succeed in one of the toughest cities in the world (NYC) AND in one of the most competitive fields: dance. Carlos walks us through his journey, how he discovered dance and the inner workings of how he progressed in his career regardless of geography. Get inspired by Carlos' tips on connecting with the people you want to work with, what to do when work gets slow, and his approach to making the most out of criticism. 67 Nicole Kirkland - The Human Behind Social Media Success

77 Edna Golandsky - A Conversation on Masterclasses
Welcome to Episode 77 where we explore what the term 'Masterclass' means and how it can be utilized in the teaching world. I took an unorthodox approach and interviewed piano expert and world-renowned teacher/professor Edna Golandsky on this topic. With over 50 years of teaching experience under her belt, a degree from Julliard, and as founder of the Golandsky Institute, I saw the opportunity to gain a non-biased (in terms of dance) and interesting perspective. I was inspired to dedicate a shorter but full episode to this topic, as the question of "what is a masterclass" and "who is rightfully one to teach it" comes up abundantly both on the podcast as well as in conversations in and around the dance community. I approach this with curiosity, as well as an understanding that there may not be a single answer, as much as a holistic approach to the various tiers and styles of teaching.

27 Taylor Jade - Entrepreneurship In The Dance World
Episode 27 of DanceSpeak introduces you to our youngest guest yet: Taylor Jade, a professional dancer and mogul-in-the-making. What caught my eye about Taylor, in addition to her maturity and poise, is that she has managed to build her own on-line platform where she teaches dance classes and is connecting students in different locations to what she can specifically offer as a professional dancer and teacher in L.A. All the while, going to auditions, dancing in various shows, and creating her own pieces for industry showcases around Los Angeles. Taylor shares on her year-long experience as personal assistant to Willdabeast, thoughts on creating passive income as a dancer (this is gold to me), how she balances going to auditions and maintaining her business, what the current audition scene is like, her thoughts on social media and filming in class, and what has driven her to create so much at her age. I can attest to the high level of knowledge that Taylor so eloquently communicates and know that there is a lot we can all learn out of this episode of DanceSpeak!
Welcome to episode 66 of the DanceSpeak podcast! After receiving such positive feedback on the group episode with Derrell, Andye J, and Hollywood, we decided to deliver to you the last segment of this recorded time we had together. We first focus on the idea of support and really GET INTO IT. What does support look like? What kind of problems can lack of support in the dance community cause? What if you don't give support in the way that others want to receive it? This one seriously shifted my perspective majorly. The other gems we get into I will leave to the listener to discover, as this episode is concise and POWERFUL!
Kaity Martinez chose her path as a professional dancer at 21 and has never looked back. 157 - Brian “Footwork” Green. Staying Inspired, Knowing Boundaries With Teachers, and Music + Dance Theory.
Our Special Guest this week is the one and only Brian "Footwork" Green. This is Brian's second visit to the podcast and as always he shares with us a gorgeous boatload of knowledge on how to keep growing as dancers, teachers, humans (I know I know). My conversation with Brian weaves through broader lessons of the human experience while also being specific to dance knowledge. For instance, when it comes to confidence, Brian has a way of looking at things that I feel can apply to anyone who's interested in showing up with a stronger sense of self. Brian and I also get into musicality and the different ways of looking at it to keep one's dancing or freestyle from getting stale. From there we discuss culture, the erasure of a generation of dance, and where to still access the source inspiration for so many dance forms we love today, such as Chicago Jit, footwork, and house fusion. Are you ready to get into it?

159 - Solange Zindzi: GLOW-Getter. The art of getting UN-stuck.
Happy 2022 and welcome to Episode 159 of the DanceSpeak Podcast with our very special guest, Solange Zindzi. Solange is a professional dancer who has toured the world with her artistry in dance and as a model, and is the author of the book 'Solo Jump.' Originally from the Netherlands, Solange's journey spans continents and includes quite the career crossover. In this episode, Solange shares about her decision to come to New York City to pursue a career in dance and her choice to move to Los Angeles after. We also get into what it's like dancing on cruise ships (a significant industry for dancers) and touring the world with international super star Chayanne. Chatting with Solange gave me insight on how vital it is to listen to your gut, how the pandemic can also be an incredibly creative time, and how to trust in the journey regardless of how it looks at any given moment. We also got into Solange's step-by-step process of bringing her book from an idea to a finished piece of literature and how she even had fun in the process (who knew, right?!). Are you ready to kick off your year with some serious inspiration? Then this episode is for you. Listen, subscribe and enjoy!

133 6 Ways To Make The Most Out of Pandemic Times
Welcome to episode 133 of the DanceSpeak podcast. In this unprecedented year, one of the major guiding factors I've experienced is having our guests share how they have been navigating Covid times. After nearly a year of physically distanced interviews from around the country (and Paris too), I have been bursting with information to share, because there are some major things in common that our thriving guests have. This episode distills this year into 6 major lessons and key ways to navigate this time. While opening up about my own journey as a solopreneur, multi-passionate business owner, and dance teacher-student-choregrapher-podcaster, I refer to lessons that our recent guests have taught us and deliver them with the intention of inspiring actionable steps and clarity for what we can do when so much has been limited. Some of the topics include boosting your work from home, navigating the often triggering social media landscape, and managing burnout. This episode as a whole speaks to how one can make the most out of any time in life where there might be a major industry slow down or rough patch that requires one to change their approach. Enjoy this episode and remember to be kind to yourself!

138 Things you always wanted to know from behind the casting table w/ Anissa Williams.
Sitting with Anissa Williams (Straight Outta Compton, Missy Elliot, 2Pac, Nike etc.) brings the HUMAN side from casting to our ears. Anissa shares about her journey from graduating school to getting into casting and how she earned he seat at the elite level that we so venerate. Anissa and I talk about everything from working on In Living Color, to the importance of work-life balance. The thing I'm most hyped about here: I have forever been curious about the perspective of the casting director. Casting can seem like an elusive, mysterious, all-powerful entity that determines our fates. We thank casting when we are booked, we (don't hate me) blame casting when we don't get it (or maybe that's just me) but it is an INTEGRAL part of the performer's journey. This episode will teach you, potentially challenge your perspective, and also warm your hearts as you hear about Anissa's deep-rooted connection to social justice and what inclusion can look like in this time.

114 Why aren't we doing Jazz Dance to Jazz Music? A history lesson with Moncell Durden.
Episode 114 of DanceSpeak is here. Hold on tight to those jazz slippers as we whisk you away to the origins of jazz dance. Not the ballet-based lyrical, not the thrash thrash to the Britney Spears, but the roots... the lesser known story. You might have met Moncell on episode 103 as I interviewed him more broadly on his background as a professor of dance who's been on faculty at some of the top universities in the country (Please know that he would probably cringe at my emphasizing his being a professor, he'd probably say something like "I'm just a person"). One of the ideas that we spoke about after was interviewing him on the origins of jazz dance. I always wondered why I didn't learn jazz dance to jazz music. Where was there a disconnect? Did the two art forms happen to have the same name? These questions and more are answered here. In this episode we start digging into the past, honoring those who came before us... especially to my dancers, dance educators, and choreographers, let our appetites to learn who came before us be an insatiable one.

106 Flii Stylz - From Richmond CA to Conquering LA, Creative Directing for Chris Brown, and Thriving in the Long Term
With all of the topics that we covered, I really struggled to settle on a title for this episode. Flii Stylz is the man who has auditioned the people who dancers currently audition for. He spent years as the choreographer and creative director behind Chris Brown. He came to Los Angeles decades ago as a member of Housin Authority (who's members also include Rich N Tone Taluega). With credits that include Usher, Missy Elliot, J LO, Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson, and more... way more... Flii knows the ins and outs of greatness. Although the dance world might know him primarily for his signature movement and artist credits, Flii is also an entrepreneur, recording artist, director, father and wears enough hats that it is straight up jaw-dropping. Topics that we cover include Flii's upbringing, what it was like move to Los Angeles in the 90's, observations on the hardest working entertainers he has met, why his movement stays... FLY(II), how he wears so many hats, what fatherhood means to him, key ingredients to his success within dance, his process in choreographing for artists, mistakes (yes we go though), and... well... more, so just listen to the episode because it's jam packed with gems.

126 Debriefing 'Cuties.' To out or not to out an abuser on social media. LA dance industry to advocacy with Leslie Scott.
Welcome to Episode 126 of DanceSpeak with Leslie Scott, the founder of Youth Protection Advocates in Dance (YPAD). Leslie Scott has held long-term teaching positions at the famed Millennium Dance Complex and Edge PAC in Los Angeles while also having years as a professional dancer under her belt. What we focus on in this episode is Leslie's pivot into advocating for the youth and addressing sexual abuse in the dance world while she was still in the industry. What had her go into a direction where she met immediate disapproval? Leslie speaks on her clarity and how she moved forward in the face of backlash. We then go into a conversation around the controversial Netflix featured film: 'Cuties.' In case this does not ring any bells, Cuties is a film that has received tons of flack for its provocative posters and dance scenes which have underage dancers front and center. While holding space for the gambit on thoughts on this, Leslie helps us unpack the conversation around this film existing in the first place and how we can approach what it might bring up for many. Last but not least we get into the recent outings of many teachers and community leaders around sexual abuse. Leslie helps us explore the impact of having much of this unfold in realtime on social media and ways for survivors and community members to best handle allegations when they come up. Inhale and exhale. There is a community to support survivors.

I had a ball co-hosting this episode with Derrell Bullock where we follow our 'Happy Hour' format (thank you Derrell) as we get into nitty gritty dance topics with Jose "Hollywood" Ramos and Andye Jamieson. We forget the mic is there and get into conversations that cover a wide range from when to give and take critique, to the teachers' journeys to becoming household names... agency talk (even on getting dropped), the idea of authenticity when creating for a job, and much much more.

69 Cat Cogliandro - Conversations Around Body, Teacher Responsibilities With Youth, Protecting Yourself And The Art
Episode 69 of DanceSpeak with Cat Cogliandro blows the lid off surface talk and goes straight for the soul of what one might go through in this industry. As Cat says: "I was not put on this earth to keep my mouth shut." Here are some of the topics we go through in this episode: - How Cat defines the genre of contemporary dance - Cat's lesser known influences - How Cat takes care of her body - Controversial social media moments - Knowing WHO is teaching young dancers - Body image and body shaming - Why she needs to be aligned with her agency representation - Showing your body vs. objectification - How dancers are conditioned to keep their heads down - Age shaming - Sacrifices she makes to be where she is - What inspires Cat. This episode does have potentially triggering conversations around eating disorders, which we want you to know before choosing to listen (we also make note at times when the conversations 'go there.') Lastly, this episode was made with a lot of love for what we do. I chose to leave many of the more vulnerable moments in hopes that it can ultimately create more space for the conversations that we need to have. Welcome to episode 147 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Ray Basa. Ray is one of those unbelievably fly dancers who is equally as warm as he is talented. To keep it so real, this episode does one of the best jobs we've done so far at keeping the conversations as real AS IF it wasn't even being recorded. And that's what I LOVE. We talk about everything from freeing up your freestyle, to choreographing on the spot, to finding love, our thoughts on cussing, finding fashion without having to buy new, and more and more. 52 Teresa Espinosa - Give More, Serve More, Do More
Episode 52 features the fascinating, the inspiring, the intelligent: Teresa Espinosa. The topics we cover are so varied that I am struggled to write this with eloquence, but I will do my best! When we speak about her contribution as a teacher, we dig through the debate of what it takes to be a teacher, as well as how Teresa has utilized her life experience to shape her classes. As a dancer and choreographer, stories include auditions from the earlier years in Los Angeles, the manifestation of dancing for Britney Spears and experiences working with Miley Cyrus. Of course, I had to ask as many questions as possible on Magic Mike. All I'll say is Vegas + female perspective + the research that went into building the show + thoughts on tearaway pants. Our conversation ultimately takes us is into the mind of Teresa, the writer, the reader, the thinker. It all ties back into knowing one's self worth and how it impacts the industry we are in. This is one of those episodes that might blow your mind. It's vulnerable, honest, and packed with wisdom.

142 Gaining clarity when it's time to transition from dance, dealing w/ burnout, and reframing insecurity w/ Therapist John Sovec
Welcome to episode 142 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist John Sovec. First and foremost, let me clarify that John was a full-on working dancer for years and years before transitioning into being a phenom therapist. So... John GETS it! Naturally, one of the first things we dive into is how John had clarity when it was time for him to transition out of dance and how he found being a therapist was his next step. Although I am all for dancing at all ages, the life of a professional dancer tends to be limited in years and there is a huge question of how and when we know when it's our time to transition to what's next. Topics that we explore include: mental health and what to expect as we return to in-person classes during pandemic times (and afterwards) | how to reframe negative self-talk | best approaches in communicating with young dancers when it comes to body care | what made John a constant 'booker' in his dance days | how to advocate for your time off and way way more! 50 Galit Friedlander - The Creator Of DanceSpeak
Episode 50 of DanceSpeak departs from the norm, as the creator and host, Galit Friedlander, is finally interviewed... wait... that's ME. Let's try this again... I've gotten a lot of feedback over this last year that people kind of have no clue, who I am, where I came from, and how the hell I've managed to grow a podcast from what seems like thin air. So after a year I decided it's time to put myself in the hot seat! I chose Taylor Edgin to interview me, as she is intelligent, inquisitive, and I knew she wouldn't be afraid to ask the tough questions. Believe me, we GO THERE. Beyond covering my background in dance, we get into conversations about lifestyle, how to draw boundaries as a woman in this industry, a couple of secrets that I haven't shared publicly until now, heartbreak, personal growth, what has kept me in Los Angeles for so long, a debate about naps, where the dance world is heading, and more. What I will say is, neither of us holds back. A lot of heart was poured into this one... and I kind of feel like I packed my whole life into 1 hr and 40 min. Grab your favorite latte, tea, water, kombucha, sit back, and enjoy!

58 Helton 'Brazil' Siqueira - Masterful In Conversation and Brilliantly Building Brands
Nearly a year ago, in my first interview with Brazil, we learned about the son of two dancers whom proved himself in his young teens years as a video editor and directed video projects for artist whom I still DREAM of meeting. In this interview, we dance in conversation... beginning with the art of networking and how to affect your state, Brazil both informs me on how to sharpen my meeting-people game while also shedding juicy tidbits on his love life and the fun-joyment he has deconstructing party-going and mingling with his partner in crime/business partner/girlfriend, Kalyne Lionheart. Then we go from reminiscing about people whom have impacted us and opening up about vulnerabilities to tapping into the steps it takes to increase your social media following, and what type of content to create depending on which 'hat' you are wearing in the industry. Yes, I know this blurb is made up a few run-on sentences (insert tears of laughter emoji), but I thought it would only be appropriate to write in the stream-of-consciousness that the interview takes place in. If you've made it this far, hurray! Take notes or sit and be purely inspired... DanceSpeak episode 58 is not to be missed!

She is on an unimaginable journey the world could've never expected to take place! Am I excited enough? A little background... Teresa Espinosa is a veteran dancer and choreographer with credits that include Magic Mike, Britney Spears, Janet Freakin' Jackson, and... so many many more. So... yeah... Teresa is a big deal and yet she's very humble. Flash forward to 2018-2019, Teresa is now the owner of the widely respected Debbie Reynold's Studio now known as Debbie Reynolds Legacy. This is the studio where Michael Jackson rehearsed for Thriller, and decades of venerated dancers have learned and rehearsed. At the end of 2018, the dance world gave a tearful goodbye to the physical Debbie Reynolds studio, as it was torn down for construction, in spite of the efforts of Teresa and the dance community. Here we are in 2019 and the Debbie Reynolds Legacy is being hosted in the space of Starwest Studios, Burbank, CA. I have been beyond curious about Teresa's journey since we last spoke, and in this episode she sits down with DanceSpeak at the new space and shares with us openly, vulnerably, with inspiration brimming on the edges of her words!

141 Brian Green - What to do with your abilities and limitations. Lessons from the club.
Welcome to episode 141 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Brian 'Footwork' Green (A BONUS episode that follow's up on Brian's longer interview in 140). This interview moment is kind of the dream. We were wrapping up a conversation and Brian starts sharing GEMS, so I ask+ed if I could record and he was cool with it and here is how our bonus episode came to be. The originating question that spurred this episode had to do with what it is about dancing with certain people that Brian enjoys. This turns into Brian sharing about how to dance with the best of the best. Also, how one can constantly improve regardless of physical limitations. It goes a lot deeper than that, gets into dance contests, the history of dance being taken from places and commodified and so much more. This episode exemplifies how a conversation can be converted into action which can lead to improvement. Listen, and it'll make sense!

152 - Gordon Watkins. Propelling your career with social media in a way that feels GOOD.
Welcome to Episode 152 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Gordon Watkins (Prince, Kendrick Lamar, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd at Super Bowl LV and moreee). Gordon originally appeared on the podcast early on as one of our youngest guests at the time. The general public might know Gordon best at the moment for his presence on social media, but what is behind it is years of experience in Los Angeles and a work ethic that we get to learn more about in this episode. Personally, as a Millennial, my views of social media are mixed. I came into this interview with loads of curiosity as Gordon has learned how to propel his own brand and also my general fear of losing myself in social media and ‘trying to make it.’ What I walked away with after speaking with Gordon is an expanded sense of what can be done right with social media and also how it can ultimately benefit the dancer and dance world. With a crossover between the dance industry and social media insta-verse this episode gets into the nitty gritty of growing your presence on social media without needing to sacrifice your essence. Gordon is open about staying on track without needing to get it perfect. This episode is a behind the scenes look at an influencer who sees a bigger picture and how each one of us can create our own path in a beautiful and new way. Enjoy, listen, share, subscribe and DO YOU!!!

Codie's credits are plentiful including Justin Timberlake, Usher, Pitch Perfect, Get On Up... the film! To be real, when I read the resume I blushed, but what REALLY gets me about Codie is his humanity. Striking the balance between unparalleled focus and humor galore, Codie is a joy to sit on the DanceSpeak couch with as he shares about finding love while on tour for Justin Timberlake and walking us through the journey to... mmmmm... we won't give it away! Codie also opens up about his journey from Los Angeles to living in 4 separate countries/5 different cities all while continuing to propel his career. 108 Brittny Sugarman - Running Multiple Businesses While Dancing on Film/TV... Make-Up Artistry and Co-Founding DANCEKIT
I've been regularly running into Brittny Sugarman for the decade that we have both been in Los Angeles. I always knew Brittny was a 'booker' as she's worked on films such as Pitch Perfect 3, Ghostbusters, Footloose, and Nickelodeon's Fresh Beat Band to name a few. What really caught my eye with Brittny (besides her unreal fulloutness and plié in second) was when I learned that in addition to being a legit dancer and makeup artist, Brittny started a brilliant business as the co-creator of Dancekit (basically it has the necessities for dancers who are training hard, auditioning tough, performing...). So, of course, I had to sit Brittny down on the DanceSpeak couch and learn about her whole life. While the first 40 minutes of the interview go through thriving on camera, what makes the great choreographers consistent in their getting-hired, things you want to know when getting your make-up did, starting a f'in business and more... we also couldn't help but get human AF, do a shot, and talk about life, friendship, and expectations for the last portion of the episode. This episode delivers on tactical information for the career and also appeals to human conversations about being a PERSON before career drone. Enjoy, share, and subscribe!

86 How to Be the Best Dance Educator Possible With Lauren Ritchie of The Dance Podcast
Welcome to episode 86 of DanceSpeak with Lauren Ritchie, the host and creator of the Dance Podcast. There is a relatively small number of dance podcast-ers out there, so I was not only geeked to 'meet' Lauren, but dumbfounded to find her to be such a passionate dance educator, with a background in fitness (like me) AND a major care for self-development (like me!). This interview will take you through a deep-dive on how to be a continuously growing dance educator, leader, and/or student in the dance world (and even outside if you apply it to other disciplines). We span topics from how to powerfully deal with unrest in the community, to discussing the concept of 'tribal shaming', and how to choose the right programs to 'grow' your knowledge and self. Of course, I made sure to ask Lauren about her experiences as a dance podcast host, as well as lessons she has learned in this field. We touch on some genuine topics including, an exploration of how staring the mirror for so long (as dancers) can impact the way we view ourselves, and the question around entering a potentially saturated market as a dance teacher. This episode is filled with uplift, honesty, care, and unabridged thought that comes from a lifetime in the dance community and industry. Please enjoy!

103 Moncell IllKozby Durden: What You May Not Know About Dance and How To Go From The Cypher To Teaching Dance In Universities
Welcome to episode 103 of DanceSpeak with Moncell IllKozby Durden. Moncell is currently on faculty at the widely respected USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. Not only does he teach at USC, but some of the universities where he has taught include Drexel, Yale, Princeton, NYU, The New School, and Temple University. What is even more impressive is that Moncell did not gain a degree from college, rather he has lived the culture, learned from the elders, read continuously, and has never stopped learning. The topics we explore in this episode span from an eye-opening perspective on how a teacher can go above and beyond to serve his/her students, to Moncell's entry into academia, to his cultural perspective as an African-American sharing a heritage that many have not lived (but want to participate in)... Moncell is inspiring in his unapologetic love for dance and the absence of needing approval. One of my favorite aspects of this episode is the information that Moncell shares on different dances that I have barely heard about before. He begins to answer my question: who are the teachers of my teachers and how do I find their teachers? As Maleek shares his philosophies and tips on navigating work, he provides poignant clarity on how he knows when something is within his purpose or not. 129 From Hamilton to Harvard. Tiffany Mellard teaches us how to thrive through adversity.
Welcome to episode 129 of the DanceSpeak podcast with Tiffany Mellard (Hamilton, Chicago, West Side Story). Not that this is a comparison game... no, not that! It's just jaw-dropping, inspiring, and gets my daydreams going. While the first thing we talk about is High School (shout out to La Guardia/ LAG Arts), because um, we had class together in H.S. and just now reconnected... wait run-on sentence... while we start off fun and light, the conversation starts diving into a deeper arena as Tiffany shares about her passion for bringing dance to the community, the injury that first hindered and then ultimately gave her career a major boost, tokenism in dance (a must-listen), getting onto Hamilton, what it was like when Covid hit, and her journey to Harvard where she is currently obtaining her degree. 34 Carmit Bachar - Transitioning Between Dancing And Singing... On Family, Touring, And Wearing Different Hats In Entertainment

What I will forever associate Carmit with is her sweet nature and undeniable drive. We discuss Carmit's transition from back-up dancer to being in the forefront in a major pop group. 102 A Live Interview at Chapman University With Kachi Alcazar Talking Tour Life and the Preparation It Takes To Be a Well-Rounded Professional Dancer
Welcome to episode 102 of DanceSpeak, recorded LIVE in front of a senior class at dancers at Chapman University. And whom did we interview? The wise and glowing goddess that is KAchi Alcazar (she's 24 but don't get it twisted, she's like a Lil' Yoda). Kachi originally entered the DanceSpeak world in a shared episode (episode 37) two years ago, as she was in the earlier part of her journey pursuing dance professionally. A little over two years later, Kachi has toured the world with both Kehlani and Camila Cabello, danced in awards shows, and gained a new perspective on her role as a movement artist. Kachi shares with candor about how the experience of touring with an artist compares to the daydream version of if. She gives tips, insights, and stories from before she booked Kehlani and the realizations that have opened up new possibilities for her future. We talk about Kachi's choice to leave college to pursue dance and why she feels it may or may not pertain to others. 57 Antoine Troupe 2017 - An Extraordinary Vision For The Dance World
Antoine Troupe is definitely one of those people I have an unlimited list of questions for. In less than a decade he has managed to become globally recognized, work with the legend, Prince, favorite artists such as Chris Brown, and new top artists including Kehlani. As if that's not impressive enough, Antoine is one of the co-founders of the KreativMndz Dance Academy and has recently launched his clothing line: Troupe Gear. In this second interview with Antoine (first interview is over 20 episodes ago!) we get familiar with Antoine the entrepreneur, the leader, the visionary. Topics that we explore include self-development, the preparation that Antoine took on to build his brand, how to find a focus, taking your time in your career, his relationship (yep, I managed to ask some bold questions), and what took Antoine from fearful to fearless. Antoine talks about books he reads, the public figures he looks up to, and the mission he is on to get dancers to the next level. Take notes and enjoy!!!

59 Yusuf Nasir
Episode 59 of DanceSpeak with Yusuf Nasir is not for the faint of heart! Yusuf, the passionate choreographer, seasoned dancer, incredibly intelligent teacher, shares his thoughts, his dreams, his disappointments, and his inner-workings with honesty and vulnerability. Before I go on, I HIGHLY recommend looking up Yusuf's work, because upon seeing it, you will WANT to know what his artistic process is... and we definitely get into that. The heart of the episode is in our discussion on mental health and well-being, as Yusuf opens up about breaking down during opening night of one of the most noted jobs he has booked. It's the thing dancers tend to not speak on out of fear of the stigma that surrounds it, and Yusuf holds nothing back here. Hold on to your ipods/listening devices... this episode is going to take you on a journey!!! Oh... and the language is explicit, so take out the ear muffs if needed.

128 Jamal Josef - Black Boys Dance Too. Pitfalls of the industry. Teaching the world to listen to your unique voice.
Welcome to episode 128 of the DanceSpeak podcast with dancer/choreographer/author Jamal Josef (Beyonce, Kirk Franklin, author of "Black Boys Dance Too"). I was sorely mistaken thinking that this episode would be around writing a book. Just a few minutes in and Jamal started speaking candidly on one of the major taboo topics in our world: men being sexually harassed. Needless to say, the ice was broken as Jamal began sharing about his journey from a work-study at the Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio to choreographing for Beyonce at her acclaimed 2018 Coachella performance. We talk about pitfalls in the industry (like the ones that are often not brought up... at all), protecting yourself as a dancer/choreographer, and stepping 101. By the time we make our way to the final leg of the interview it is beyond clear that "Black Boys Dance Too" poured out of Jamal as a way to build new possibilities and normalizing diversity in dance. An overarching theme that my ears perked up to is all of the ways in which Jamal has created opportunities for himself and how even during the recording of this episode (during the great Covid 19 pause) there is so much that can be done to continuously create much needed products.

93 A Vital Thing To Remember About Opinions - Convo With Amy Allen and Betty Allen
Episode 93 delivers a candid and poignant conversation with last week's guest, Amy Allen (Usher, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Aaliyah, and more) and her mother, Betty Allen. As our interview with Amy was coming to an end, we found it impossible to ignore the fact that her mother, Betty, was in the room with morsels of insight to share. The conversation starts with a simple question: "What would you like to acknowledge Amy for..." and flourishes into a talk around opinions, nature vs. nurture, and the darling dynamic that occurs between a parent and their child (whom is now a grown woman, but still... we are all someone's child). Trust, it was informative and precious in such a way, that it demanded an episode of its own. Following the episode is a motivational and personal segment from your host, Galit Friedlander.

In this episode, you'll find Chuck Maldonado celebrating his 20th anniversary as a professional in the dance industry. Carrying a resume of over 28 feature films and work on hundreds of television shows, Chuck is clearly someone we can learn a lot from. One of the first jaw-dropping facts I learned in my interview with Chuck, is that he began his career as a professional dancer at 29. With a strong sense of purpose, and unbeatable work ethic, Chuck shares what it took to train himself to the level of his peers and make his dreams tangible. Some of the highlights of this episode include: what has changed in Los Angeles' dance industry in the last 15 years, tips on networking, how Chuck chooses his assistants, a choreographer's perspective on hiring friends, thoughts on having a back-up plan, advice for choreographers and dancers booking work in the industry, recommendations on how a dancer should prepare before moving to L.A. for dance, tips on head shots, Chuck's dance convention, and more. 91 Deepening Your Relationship With Self, A Dynamic Convo with Jojo Diggs
Welcome to episode 91 of the DanceSpeak podcast with our guest: Jojo Diggs. When Jojo gave us her first interview in 2016 (episode 15), she blew us away with her unique perspective, clarity and strength in the way she has made many a life-shifting decisions. Two year later, Jojo has moved from L.A. to Vegas, is a member of the esteemed Jabbawockeez cast on the Vegas strip, and has taken on a major focal change from dance dance dance to the psychology of movement, mental health, and coaching. So, naturally, I had to pick her brain. 89 Dealing With The Lows and Making Big Moves with Jasmine Rafael
Welcome to Episode 89 of the DanceSpeak podcast with the beautiful Jasmine Rafael. You may have seen Jasmine dancing with Ariana Grande on the recent VMA's or in her class videos from Millennium. Of course, I had to geek out a little on Jasmine's teaching and ask her about how she prepares for her classes, etc, but, the heart of this episode lives in us having a REAL human-to-human conversation about the 'less glamorous' aspects that might be harder to discuss in an industry that praises perfection. Jasmine shares about her focus on being a professional dancer in the midst of teaching success and her big move from Los Angeles to New York City, followed by a choice to move back to Los Angeles. This is a brave person right here who takes the reigns on her destiny! We then explore topics that I hear a lot about in confidence, but I'm not sure they are discussed in the open. We talk about depression, addictive patterns, body image, relationships, and being 'in it.' AND, how we can still stay plugged into the world and seek help and not ignore our state of being, when we are going throw a low time. Jasmine: I applaud you, I admire you, I respect you for sharing yourself so fully, in the belief that this conversation let's us all connect in a deeper and more meaningful way.

123 India McGee. How to prepare to be in period pieces. Dancing and acting on TV. What gets lost with binaries. The good in releasing a dream.
Okay, my title is long here. Episode 123 with India McGee inspires a long title because her voice, her intelligence, her variety in topics shared is a celebration for the ears. Yes, I was hyped to hear about India's experience dancing and acting on Netflix's 'The Get Down' and BET's 'American Soul.' Yes, I was hyped to learn about her experience teaching at a top university (Emory). But what really gets me is India's empowered outlook and confidence in what can seem taboo to talk about. We talk facial hair on women, why binaries can be harmful, even the benefit of letting go of a dream (listen, we LOVE dreams, but this episode will give you another side). India shares with us ways to prepare for roles that take place in a different time, how comedy and improv improved her career, and... babies (yes, babies come up here too).
