Being Home With a Home Organizing Expert (Megan Golightly of Simplified)

Today on the show we have Meg Golightly, home organizing expert, and founder of Simplified. For Meg, home organizing is not just about putting things in their place. She says, "My interest in home organization has evolved from a lifelong fascination with how our brains work reinforced by my degree in psychology and my ongoing interest in neuroscience.” She believes we all have reasons as to why we hang on to things. And everybody struggles with clutter. Everybody. However, there’s a cost to clutter. And that we can’t get to where we want to be until we let go. And so, Meg does more than just show us how to organize — she goes deeper. There’s one important step she believes we all must do before we organize, and she shares it in this conversation. She also offers tips on where and how to start in the organizing process, as well as the three questions she has her clients answer before starting the organizing process. We also talk about how find her favorite organizing tools; why she creates “towns” for her stuff at home; and finally, she shares expert ways to organize a pantry. We all know how much we love seeing a well-organized pantry! If you’re ready to make space in your home — both literally and figuratively — this conversation for you.  LEARN MORE ABOUT MEGAN GOLIGHTLY                                                              Website: Go-SimplifiedInstagram: @GoSimplifiedSimplified’s Guides: How-To GuidesGoSimplified’s Amazon Store: Shop NowOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Being Home With Nate Berkus (Celebrity Interior Designer & HGTV Star)Being Home With Feng Shui for Families (Kristina Hollinger, Feng Shui Expert)Being Home With Clutterbugy’s Organizing Expert (Cass Aarssen)  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With Feng Shui for Families (Kristina Hollinger, Feng Shui Expert)

Today on the show, host Laurie Gunning Grossman talks with feng shui expert Kristina Hollinger. Kristina is a feng shui consultant and author — and she’s the host of the podcast Feng Shui With Kristina Hollinger where she’s focused on helping people expand their manifesting toolbox. Kristina says that she is dedicated to helping you design the life you deserve.  We wanted to have Kristina back on the show to talk specifically about feng shui for families — and how we can use feng shui to help foster harmony within the home. Kristina talks about how there are areas of our home that signify areas of our lives. Almost like a mirror to each other. We talk specifically about the Family area — how to identify it (where it’s located in your home) and how to bolster this area through specific feng shui cures. In other words, if you want to strengthen and support family relationships, there are some simple yet effective things you can do in the form of decor and design. And Kristina shares these ideas with us. We were also curious about how to use feng shui in other areas of our homes that we don’t have total control over, such as our kids’ rooms. Kristina has some great advice around what to do when maybe we can’t completely control the decor or the clutter in these important areas. You will also love hearing how — and why — Kristina and her family write their intentions on their walls; ways that we can clear and uplift the energy in our spaces; and what to focus on if you were to do just one thing to create greater harmony in your home. LEARN MORE ABOUT KRISTINA HOLLINGER                                                              Website: KristinaHollinger.comInstagram: @kristina.hollingerManifest With Kristina: 12 Month Manifesting JourneyPodcast: Feng Shui With Kristina HollingerOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEYour Work Desk Needs These Feng Shui and Aromatherapy IdeasBeing Home With The AstroTwins and 2023 Astrology (Ophira Edut)Being Home With Feng Shui Expert Amanda Gibby PetersBeing Home With Spirit Daughter Jill Wintersteen CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With Nate Berkus (Celebrity Interior Designer & HGTV Star)

Today on the show I am talking with Nate Berkus, celebrity interior designer, best-selling author, and host of HGTV’s “The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project.” We’ve seen evidence of Nate’s talent ever since he came into the public eye in 2002 after his first appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Nate knows design, and he knows how to elevate a home. As he says, he cares deeply about living beautifully. And, lucky for us all, he’s just released a brand-new collection called Nate Home. As he says in our conversation, he’s “standing on the edge of a cliff,” with his return to bedding, bath, and (a new category), home organization Why a cliff? Well, because as Nate shares, this is the first time he isn’t partnering with a single retailer. Through his partnership with mDesign, his goal was to make this new collection available to everybody – and he’s made true to that goal: Nate Home is available at Amazon, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and more.   We also talk about the two foundations of design that matter to him; he shares the tangible things that can help express the stories of the people living in a home; he talks about how he’s become a better designer since becoming a father; and he shares why having an organized home is so important – and he gives us two expert organizing tips to try. Finally, we talk about his marriage to designer Jeremiah Brent and their two children – how sharing his life not only as a designer, but as a family man, is so important. To him and his husband, visibility matters. LEARN MORE ABOUT NATE BERKUSInstagram for Nate Home: @natehomeInstagram for Nate Berkus: @nateberkusWebsite: Nate Home by Nate Berkus: Click hereWebsite: Nate Berkus Home Collections: Click hereThe Nate & Jeremiah Home Project on HGTV: Click here                                                              OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With FEEL FREE Magazine Creator (Leanne Ford)Being Home With Mandy Moore’s Interior Designer (Sarah Sherman Samuel)Being Home With Clutterbug's Organizing Expert (Cass Aarssen)Being Home With an Interior Designer Transforming Old Homes (Victoria Sass) CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With the Head of Editorial & Creative at Google Shopping (Aya Kanai)

Today on the show we have Aya Kanai, Head of Editorial and Creative for Google Shopping.Did you know that people shop with Google more than 1 billion times per day? This is one of the many reasons why I was thrilled to talk with Aya (formerly an editor/director in fashion and beauty) because she has an inside look at shopping trends and habits for 2023 in the home decor and design space, and beyond. It’s interesting to hear what people are searching for right now – and what’s important to them when deciding where they want to put their money (especially for Gen Z and Gen Alpha). In this conversation, Aya offers insight on the Google shopping experience, including Google’s tools and filters such as 3D imagery and AR. Doesn’t the idea of taking 3D imagery of furniture and putting it in your space to see how it looks in your home or backyard before you buy sound so helpful? Aya shares some personal thoughts on her own home, including her decor style; what she can’t live without and what brings her great joy when she’s at home; and what she loves most about New York City. Aya and I agree that how we shop for ourselves – what we choose to put in our homes or on our bodies – is not just about buying things to amass stuff; it’s about purchasing products that help express who we are in the world. Every shopping decision we make is an opportunity to create, support, and tell our personal stories.LEARN MORE ABOUT AYA KANAILinkedIn: @ayakanaiInstagram: @ayakanai                                                              OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With Interiors Expert and Author (Hilary Robertson)Being Home With an Interior Designer Transforming Old Homes (Victoria Sass)Being Home With a Popular HGTV Interior Design Star (Leanne Ford)Being Home With Etsy's Trend Expert (Dayna Isom Johnson) CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With Leanne Ford and the Freedom to Create [BEST OF]

Hi — I'm Laurie Gunning Grossman, host of Being Home With Hunker. For this last episode of the year, I wanted to replay a conversation I had with interior designer, HGTV star, furniture designer, and author Leanne Ford about the launch of her new print magazine, Feel Free.So why this particular podcast conversation? As we enter into the new year, many of us have dreams, goals, and intentions of things we want to create or experience in the year ahead. It’s a moment of great momentum—and I think that what Leanne represents, and what her magazine represents, is the freedom that comes when we give ourselves permission to take chances, to say yes, to be okay with not being perfect. Like, it’s okay to make mistakes … as long as we’re trying. As she says in this conversation, “What's this perfection thing we're all aiming for?" She says, “Raise your hand if you've done it. Who's perfect? So let's just cool it.” She goes on to recite a quote from the John Steinbeck book East of Eden which is, "Now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good." So, if you’ve wanting to try something new or to take a chance on an idea that you’ve been sitting on, no matter what it is, listen to this episode. It’s pure inspiration. And then, after you’re done, take one step in that direction of your dream or creative idea.LEARN MORE ABOUT LEANNE FORD AND FEEL FREE MAGAZINE Website: LeanneFord.comInstagram: @leannefordinteriorsFeel Free on IG: @feelfreeBuy the Magazine: FEEL FREEBuy Leanne’s Book: Work in Progress OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKELeanne Ford: Design Your Home to Enjoy It Now (Don’t Wait)Sarah Sherman Samuel: Handmade Items Add Value to Our HomesRachel Moriarty: A Maximalist’s Approach to Colorful Home and LifeJennifer Pastiloff: Manifesting Her Home in Her Happy Place  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With an Herbalist on the Power of Plants (Wooden Spoon Herbs Founder Lauren Haynes)

Today on the Being Home With Hunker podcast, host Laurie Gunning Grossman is talking with Lauren Haynes, the founder of Wooden Spoon Herbs. If there’s one thing that Lauren knows, it’s herbalism. She started delving into the world of herbs years ago through tinkering, and trial and error before she created Wooden Spoon Herbs. She started in her Tennessee kitchen and sold her products at an Appalachian Mountain farmers’ market stall – and then over the course of years, her company grew. Lauren has said that she has always found nourishment in nature, and that when it comes to plants, she sees possibility; she sees the mystical aspects of them, and their art form. Lauren believes that herbs are a powerful adjunct to conventional medicine. In this conversation, she shares ways that we can boost our wellbeing as we move into a new year. We talk about her time living in the Appalachian Mountains in a rural town, her thoughts on wildcrafting (which is harvesting from the wild), and how we can use indoor plants for medicinal or nutritive reasons. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode where we’ll share a code for you to receive 15% off your order at Wooden Spoon Herbs. LEARN MORE ABOUT LAUREN HAYES AND WOODEN SPOON HERBSWebsite: WoodenSpoonHerbs.comInstagram: @woodenspoonherbs        TikTok: @woodenspoonherbsOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With a Celebrity Nutritionist (Kelly LeVeque)Being Home With a Feng Shui Expert on Elevating Our Home’s Energy (Amanda Gibby Peters)Being Home With an Expert Aromatherapist (Amy Galper) CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Part of her talent lies in world-building, in using these stories to encourage people tap into an emotional mindset and get out of the literal when designing their homes. You’ll love what Victoria has to say on the topic of interior design, including her tips on client and interior designer relationships, her favorite materials to mix when designing a room, and which items she likes to start planning a room around.LEARN MORE ABOUT VICTORIA SASSWebsite: ProspectRefugeStudio.comInstagram: @prospectrefuge OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With an Interiors Expert (Hilary Robertson)Being Home With the Brownstone Boys (Jordan Slocum and Barry Bordelon)Being Home With a Design Book Author (Nina Freudenberger LIVE at Hunker House)Being Home With a Popular HGTV Interior Design Star (Leanne Ford)  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With Gratitude (Guests Share Personal Thoughts)

It’s the season of giving and I've been thinking a lot about thankfulness.Gratitude, what we’re personally grateful for, is different for each of us — because we each have our own life experiences, our own lens on how we see our world, both macro and micro. But why is expressing our gratitude daily so important or helpful?According to Harvard Health, giving thanks can make you happier. That in “positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”Perhaps you’ve heard that saying: “What you appreciate, appreciates.”Or, where your attention goes, energy flows. So, it makes sense as to why focusing on the things we’re grateful for is powerful.I’m often curious what fills a person with appreciation – because within that I find inspiration. And so, for this podcast episode I reached out to some of our past guests to find out what they are grateful for, and I’m sharing it here with you. Being Home With a Feng Shui Expert on Elevating Our Home’s Energy (Amanda Gibby Peters)

“Feng shui is happening whether you endorse it or not, whether you believe it or not. Because if you have stuff, if you have space, it is happening all around you. So, it doesn’t care whether you believe in it or not. And again, this is my invitation, get curious about where your house can help you out, because it can.” -- Amanda Gibby Peters Today on the show we have feng shui expert Amanda Gibby Peters.Amanda is the creator and founder of Simple Shui and has been teaching feng shui techniques for over a decade. This includes teaching people how to become their own feng shui consultant, and her House Therapy Certification Program which empowers people to see their homes as living, breathing entities. Basically, she’s training us to see our homes as another family member! In this conversation, we talk about how everything is energy, and everything is connected – this includes what we have in our homes or what’s happening in and around our homes. These things affect us. Do you have leaks? Clutter? Something broken? Amanda encourages us to look at how these things are affecting us in other ways, such as financially, with our health, our relationships, our career… you get what I mean. Amanda is here to drop some serious feng shui knowledge, tips, and advice – you’ll definitely come away with something tangible to help elevate the energy in your space and therefore in your life as well. Honestly, I was so thrilled with this conversation, and I think you will be, too. LEARN MORE ABOUT AMANDA GIBBY PETERSWebsite: SimpleShui.comInstagram: @amandagibbypetersServices: SimpleShui/servicesOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO  LIKEBeing Home With a Feng Shui Expert on Bedrooms (Kate MacKinnon)Being Home With a Color-Loving Interior Designer (Rachel Moriarty)Being Home With a Color Therapist (Walaa)Being Home With a Hawaiian High Seer (Kimo Kepano) CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With a Design Book Author (Nina Freudenberger LIVE at Hunker House)

This past October, host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) welcomed Nina Freudenberger to Hunker House in Venice, CA for a live recording of the Being Home With Hunker podcast.Nina is no stranger to the podcast. We first had her on the show in 2021, and after that conversation ended, we realized that had even more questions we wanted to ask her. So, we were delighted when she agreed to come back to Hunker, yet this time IRL and in front of a design-loving group. If you scroll through Instagram or Pinterest, chances are you’ve seen Nina’s books “Surf Shack” or “Bibliostyle” styled on a coffee table or bookshelf. (Her third book on mountain houses will be available in fall 2023.) As the founder of Freudenberger Design Studio, she is known for her impeccable taste seen through her residential and hospitality projects. (We highly recommend a visit to White Water Cambria or San Luis Creek Lodge if you’re in California!) Nina is a wealth of information and inspiration for anyone who loves design, wants to write design books, or is interested in an interior design career or side hustle. LEARN MORE ABOUT NINA FREUDENBERGERWebsite: Freudenberger Design StudioInstagram: @ninafreudenbergerOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO  LIKEBeing Home With Nina Freudenberger (our first conversation with her)Being Home With Leanne Ford (on FEEL FREE magazine)Being Home With Hilary Robertson (on interiors styling)Being Home With Rachel Moriarty (on celebrating color in design) CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With Ghost Stories (Kimo Kepano)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) talks with Hawaiian light seer Kimo Kepano. On Kimo’s Instagram and TikTok accounts, Kimo has been commenting on videos that feature paranormal activity — people seeing ghosts, knives flying through kitchens, hair being pulled when no one is in the room… you name it. He does these blind reactions where he watches videos that people send to him and then tunes into whether it’s truth or fiction. And you guys, some of these videos really are true. (Like the knife being thrown across the kitchen by spirit energy!)As a light seer, Kimo can see what a lie looks like. This is how he knows if these ghosts videos are real or fake. He says that lies literally look like something — the colors are different, they have a different vibration — and so does truth. So Kimo can see it, hear it, and feel it. How cool is that?!Kimo explains more in this conversation and shares some real spooky stories (as well as a sweet spirit story), so you’ll want to listen all the way through!LEARN MORE ABOUT KIMO KEPANOWebsite: TheLightSeer.comInstagram: @alohalightseerTikTok: @thelightseerOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE Being Home With Hawaiian High Seer (Kimo Kepano)Being Home With Pet Communicator & Psychic (Nikki Vasconez)Being Home With the High Priestess of Brooklyn (Alex Caiola)Being Home With a Channeler and Psychic Medium (Natalie Miles)  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With FEEL FREE Magazine Creator (Leanne Ford)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman chats with Leanne Ford. You most likely know Leanne as an interior designer, or as an HGTV star (Restored by the Fords and Home Again With the Fords), or as furniture designer in partnership with Crate & Barrel. But now Leanne has a new title to add to her name: print magazine creator.Leanne recently launched a quarterly print magazine on art and home design called Feel Free. If you follow Leanne, you’ll agree that this name is just so fitting for who she is and what she represents. In This Episode We Talk About: The FEEL FREE magazine — what Leanne also calls a workbook — with the hope that people write on it, rip on it, put it on their wall, and get it messy!Creating the magazine to expose people to artists, art, and to inspire people to live freely. (Because being perfect just isn’t a thing.)The generosity of the artists who shared their artwork with Leanne to feature in the magazine (and for all of us to rip out!) – along with their tips on how to create art. This magazine is for everyone, no matter what you want to create, whether it’s curating an online shop or writing that book you’ve been dreaming of.Where Leanne gets her biggest inspiration (hint: it’s not design). How the freedom to create is contagious. How her 3 ½ year old daughter is in her prime creative time — and how inspiring it is to Leanne. (And how her launching her magazine is no surprise that it’s aligning with her daughter’s creativity.) How much her spiritual life plays into her creativity, and how what she creates does not dictate her worth.Working with interior stylist and author Hilary Robertson, who is the Style Director at FEEL FREE.  LEARN MORE ABOUT LEANNE FORD AND FEEL FREE MAGAZINE Website: LeanneFord.comInstagram: @leannefordinteriorsFeel Free on IG: @feelfreeBuy the Magazine: FEEL FREEBuy Leanne’s Book: Work in Progress OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO  LIKELeanne Ford: Design Your Home to Enjoy It Now (Don’t Wait)Sarah Sherman Samuel: Handmade Items Add Value to Our HomesRachel Moriarty: A Maximalist’s Approach to Colorful Home and LifeJennifer Pastiloff: Manifesting Her Home in Her Happy Place  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With a Home Editor’s Costco Shopping Tips (Anna Gragert)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host Laurie Gunning Grossman (@laurie.gunning.grossman) is talking with Anna Gragert, Senior Lifestyle Editor at Hunker (an home design and decor online publication).Anna knows a thing or two about Costco. As the senior editor of lifestyle and design content, one topic that seems to captivate the Hunker audience is anything that involves Costco, everyone’s favorite wholesale store. In a nutshell, if you’re unfamiliar with Costco, this store has food, clothing, furniture, alcohol, electronics – you name it, they have it or have had it at some point. And they have it in bulk. After all the articles that Anna has researched, written, and edited about Costco (with her team of writers), it’s safe to say Anna is an expert on all things Costco. In this conversation, we discuss how she and her team identify what’s trending at Costco, the secrets she’s learned about how to spot deals and other perks, and whether a Costco membership is actually worth it. We also hear about the psychology behind why people spend so much time in Costco. As she says, she loves plants because they’re “chill.” She has such a relaxed approach to caring for greenery. In this conversation, Stephanie talks about how she is moving away from being a plant collector, and instead calls herself a plant enthusiast. Although, many people refer to her as a plant consultant—she helps others discover how they can get their plants to thrive and stay alive. Here she shares how it’s important to know where your indoor plants originate from before you bring them into your home; how to deal with negative self-talk around your ability to care for plants; and the best plants to have in the kitchen, the bathroom, and the bedroom.   We also talk about which plants are on her bucket list; greenery that work best in modern decor, or which ones to add when you want a lush feeling in your home; and she shares ideas on propagation — it’s something she loves doing with her plants. If you’re feeling timid about indoor plant care or how to get started, Stephanie’s helpful advice that will make it all feel more manageable to you. By the end of this conversation, you’ll be ready to add some new plants to your space! LEARN MORE ABOUT STEPHANIE HORTONWebsite: BotanicalBlackGirl.comInstagram: @botanicalblackgirlArticle on Hunker: Botanical Black Girl: Know Your Plant’s Origin Before You Bring It Home READ MORE ABOUT THE PLANTS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODEThese Are the Plants Suggested by Botanical Black Girl OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With the Plant Kween (Christopher Griffin)Being Home With a Plant Stylist (Hilton Carter)Surprising and Delightfully Odd Ways to Keep Houseplants AliveBeing Home With a Color-Loving Interior Designer (Rachel Moriarty)  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With a Feng Shui Expert on Bedrooms (Kate MacKinnon)

In this conversation, host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Feng Shui expert, Kate MacKinnon.Kate shares how we can use Feng Shui in our bedrooms to create the most supportive spaces for our health and wellbeing. She believes that the bedroom is a place for restoration, rejuvenation, and intimacy – a sacred place where we can go to recharge. So, how we set it up is important. We talk about the ideal placement of the bed, the one color she does not recommend, ways to create a feeling of balance, and much more.Kate says that when she was younger, she originally wanted to go into interior design, yet she took a detour into a corporate career in banking. However, in 1999 she felt something was missing and did "The Artist's Way"—and connected with the question: “When you were 7 years old, what did you think about before going to sleep at night?” She remembered that she loved rearranging people’s homes and buying furniture for her best friend’s doll house. When Feng Shui was introduced to her on a business trip to Hong Kong, she decided to study it. She’s been a Feng Shui consultant now for 21 years, and now has her own business called Everyday Feng Shui.If you’ve wondered about Feng Shui—what it is and how it works—and especially how you can use it in your bedroom, listen to this episode. LEARN MORE ABOUT KATE MACKINNONWebsite: Kate-Mackinnon.comInstagram: @fengshuikatePinterest: @FengShuiKateOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBeing Home With a Popular HGTV Design Star (Leanne Ford)Being Home a Hawaiian High Seer (Kimo Kepano)Being Home With a Feng Shui Expert (Kristina Hollinger)How to Create a Meditation Space You’ll Actually Use  CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With Author Jen Pastiloff [BEST OF]

Today on the show, I’m thrilled to share again my chat with Jennifer Pastiloff in this “best of” conversation.  Jen was the very first guest we had here on this podcast. Talking with her was everything I had hoped for: she was honest, authentic, funny, insightful, and joyful. I just loved it. Jen is the best-selling author of “On Being Human,” and she is also a public speaker, coach, retreat leader, yoga teacher, and is the creator of the Shame Loss movement. You’ll hear how a house-sitting experience gave Jen the permission to dream of owning her own home after living in her apartment for so long. How people on social media tried to shame her about that same apartment (but don’t worry – Jen didn’t allow that!); and how she finally manifested her beautiful place in Ojai, California. As she says, everything comes at the right time, including nice kitchen. Please enjoy this episode. It’s one of my favorites.LEARN MORE ABOUT JENNIFER PASTILOFF Website: JenniferPastiloff.comInstagram: @jenpastiloffOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKEBlack Fairy Godmother Simone GordonPodcast host and author Elise LoehnenTherapist and author Lori GottliebHunker's Editor in Chief Eve EpsteinCONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With a Popular HGTV Interior Design Star (Leanne Ford)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with interior designer Leanne Ford.Leanne knows about the importance of home, of having a home base to call our own. She has a deep love for her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she launched her successful career as an interior designer after gaining attention for restoring a 1907 schoolhouse and making it her home. Trust me, you’ve probably seen these pictures somewhere along the way if you look at design magazines, Pinterest, or Instagram. Since then, she gained even more fame as an HGTV star with her brother Steve Ford on the shows "Restored by the Fords" and "Home Again With the Fords." And, what’s also exciting to Leanne right now is her partnership with Crate & Barrel who carries her first-ever collection of furniture and accessories. In this episode, Leanne talks about her latest collaboration with Crate & Barrel and how designing furniture is such a thrill for her. As she says it’s a natural alignment between her brand and Crate & Barrel. We talk about how she creates her gorgeous mood boards for design inspo, and why she likes to give all that insight and resources away. She shares tips on where she likes to splurge and save with interior design choices, as well as some clever small space/rental decorating tips and hacks. You’ll see that Leanne is pure creative inspiration: she encourages us all to be messy, to keep trying things, to keep moving forward, and to play. Don’t be afraid to fail. Surprising and Delightfully Odd Ways to Keep Houseplants Alive - Minisode

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman shares four ways to care for your indoor plants that are strange, surprising, unexpected, and a little bit odd. Yet, ultimately, altogether helpful.  There are anxieties about how to take care of indoor plants. And I get it — there’s so much to know. How much light does a plant need? Where to place it in your home? How much water does it need? When do you prune it? When do you fertilize it? When do you repot? I mean, help help! It’s no wonder people are nervous.   If you listen to this podcast, you may have heard me say that for many years, I told myself the story that I don’t know how to take care of plants — until a couple of years ago when I said, no more. I’m no longer telling myself that I’m a plant killer. It was time to step up. So now, I’ve taken on the identity of a person with a green-ish thumb. And, so far, so good. It’s taken time along with some trial and error to keep my indoor plants alive. And it’s ever changing and ever evolving, but I guess that goes with the territory of taking care of something that’s alive. Thank goodness kids are heartier than plants if you know what I mean! While I’m still very much a beginner, I luckily work with experts at Hunker who know the ins and outs of caring for plants.  So, keep listening for four of my favorite slightly wacky ways to keep your plants alive and thriving.  LINKS TO THINGS TALKED ABOUT IN THIS EPISODE For the full article: Surprising and Delightfully Odd Ways to Keep Houseplants Alive Strangely, These Plants Love CoffeeSurprisingly, Kitty Litter Is Really Good for These Houseplants Unexpectedly, Some Houseplants Love MilkOddly, These Hacks Will Make Your Plants Thrive OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT LIKEBeing Home With the Plant Kween (Christopher Griffin)Being Home With a Plant Stylist (Hilton Carter)Being Home With an Original Interior Design Blogger (Dabito)Being Home With a Color-Loving Interior Designer (Rachel Moriarty)  MORE ABOUT LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANInstagram: @laurie.gunning.grossmanEmail: Laurie@hunker.comLinkedIn: @lauriegunninggrossmanTikTok: @laurie.gunning.grossman ABOUT THIS PODCAST For more information about this episode, or other podcast episodes, visit Hunker.com/podcast.This podcast is produced by Laurie Gunning Grossman.Being Home With Hunker is recorded and mixed at Night Shift Audio.Theme music by Jonathan Grossman.Show art designed by Mory Men. ABOUT HUNKERHunker inspires and empowers you to create a space that expresses who you are, shows off your unique style, and makes your life happier and more productive.Visit us, follow us, learn more.Website: HunkerInstagram: @hunkerhomeTikTok: @hunkerhomeFacebook: HunkerHomeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Being Home With a Pet Communicator & Psychic (Nikki Vasconez)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with animal communicator Nikki Vasconez. Says Laurie: “I reached out to Nikki because I wanted to talk about the ways we can communicate with our pets to create harmonious spaces for them and to make the lives of our pets as lovely as possible. We both agree pets are part of our home … they make everything perfect.” Nikki believes that everyone can communicate with our pets all the time. That it’s not a gift, it’s a skill. As she says, it’s all within us, it’s just a matter of believing it. Believing that it’s possible. She shares tips on how we can interpret what our pets are trying to tell us; the common throughline that all dogs or all cats want in their living spaces; how to help animals change their routines (like sleeping in our beds), and suggestions on how people can add a new pet to the home when we already have a pet at home or how to prepare them for when a new baby is expected. Nikki even talks about our pets who have passed away and how communicating with them has changed her perception of death. If you’ve lost a pet, I think you’ll really love hearing what she has to say. It’s sweet, it’s touching, and there’s so much more behind the scenes. If you want to transform your connection with your pet, this is an episode you’ll want to listen to all the way through. LEARN MORE ABOUT NIKKI VASCONEZ, ANIMAL COMMUNICATOR Visit Hunker for links to Nikki's recommendations for her favorite animal communication books:Click here.Website: NikkiVasconez.comInstagram: @nikkivasconezTikTok: @nikkivasconez *Note: There are many scam accounts that look like Nikki’s social media accounts listed here. Being Home With a Hawaiian High Seer (Kimo Kepano)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Kimo Kepano, a Hawaiian high seer. Kimo, who also calls himself a light seer, is a multi-sensory psychic medium. As he explains, he’s able to see multidimensionally through shape, sound, lineage, and cultural practices. When working with people he says that he can connect them with their guides and guardians through his gift of sight as well as his intuitive and psychic senses. Growing up within an intuitive family in Hawaii, he discovered his gifts at the age of three when he started speaking to Spirit. And it grew from there. In this conversation, Kimo talks about how he works with clients in designing their spaces. It involves timelines, future possibilities, and working with a client’s spirit team. He designs spaces contingent on a certain outcome. This most likely is unlike anything you’ve heard before! We talk about how the items we bring into our homes – especially vintage or secondhand items – have an energy, a “voice.” And, even how our homes, the actual buildings, have spirit energy. (Not to mention the actual spirits who are living in our homes!) Regarding general design elements, he shares that to elevate the frequency in our homes, he prescribes “change.” Change in a paint color, new pillows, new textures, and new smells. And he says that once someone steps into the idea of change we’re removing ourselves from old energetic cords … and then, anything we do is easy. LEARN MORE ABOUT KIMO KEPANO, HAWAIIAN HIGH SEER Website: TheLightSeer.comInstagram: @kimokepano AND @alohalightseerOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT LIKEThe High Priestess of Brooklyn Alex CaiolaChanneler Natalie MilesSpirit Daughter Jill WintersteenFeng Shui Expert Kristina HollingerColor Expert Walaa CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With The High Priestess of Brooklyn (Alex Caiola)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast host @laurie.gunning.grossman is talking with Alex Caiola, otherwise known as The High Priestess of Brooklyn. Alex is a magical analyst, astrologer, and intuitive advisor. When working with clients, whether one-on-one or even with startup companies, Alex uses different modalities such as astrology, tarot, connecting with guides, and being in touch with source energy. She believes that being psychic is a skill set that we all have — it’s a muscle that we can flex and practice. As she says, astrology will meet you wherever you are. In this conversation, we talk about how to use astrology, more specifically areas of our birth charts, to amplify, support, and decorate our homes and personal spaces. We spend some time focused on two areas of the birth chart structure: the fourth house — which relates to the home and family — and the sixth house, which is the house of our day-to-day environment and routines. We also touch upon how it’s interesting to know which sign and house Venus is in, which speaks to our unique decoration style.A quick note about birth charts — depicted as a wheel with 12 houses, birth charts are essentially your personal blueprint of where the planets were placed the moment you were born. If you haven't cast your birth chart yet, you can go to Astrostyle.com, Astro-charts.com, astro.com or any online chart generator to access your birth chart and learn more. Alex also shares some general things people can add to their homes to make the space feel good, including spring-cleaning rituals to clear the space — turns out, it’s a spiritual thing to clean! LEARN MORE ABOUT ALEX CAIOLA, THE HIGH PRIESTESS  Website: High Priestess of BrooklynInstagram: @highpriestessofbrooklynOTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT LIKEChanneler Natalie MilesSpirit Daughter Jill WintersteenFeng Shui Expert Kristina HollingerColor Expert Walaa CONNECT WITH ME, LAURIE GUNNING GROSSMANHave questions? Being Home With a Color Therapist (Walaa)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast, host @laurie.gunning.grossman talks with Walaa, a color therapist, founder of Color-Ways, and author of the book, “Heal Yourself With Color.” Walaa’s work is dedicated to using color energy to help us understand ourselves better, and what we need to thrive and grow. Through her one-on-on color code activation sessions, she helps people understand the vibration of color and their emotional connection to it, including how their subconscious relates to it. She shares that we can use color to our benefit: to understand ourselves better and create better environments for ourselves. In addition to her one-on-one mentoring work, she has a background in interior design, which enables her to help people with their spaces as well. As she says, our homes have a frequency that we’re constantly conversing with – and colors help us know which parts of our homes need boosting to support our wellbeing and energy. She shows people how to use color frequencies to balance and release for them to have more space to bring in all the things they want. LEARN MORE ABOUT WALAAWebsite: Color-Ways.comInstagram: @walaa.colorwaysBook: “Heal Yourself With Color” OTHER EPISODES YOU MIGHT LIKEThe High Priestess of Brooklyn Alex CaiolaChanneler Natalie MilesSpirit Daughter Jill WintersteenFeng Shui Expert Kristina HollingerABOUT THIS PODCAST For more information about this episode, or other podcast episodes, visit Hunker.com/podcast.This podcast is produced by Laurie Gunning Grossman. Being Home With a Channeler and Psychic Medium (Natalie Miles)

On the Being Home With Hunker podcast we have Natalie Miles, a channeler, psychic medium, author, and podcast host.As a channeler, Natalie connects with Spirit Guides — or whatever label you relate to, such as the Universe, Higher Power, Source, and so forth. She connects to the collective energy and shares whatever messages want to be shared for us as individuals or as a collective. In this conversation, Natalie shares how she believes that everyone is intuitive and that we’re all receiving intuitive guidance every day. This is what her work is all about: helping people tap into their intuition. Natalie shares how she’s moved her homes when she’s received intuitive hits from her Spirit Guides — and how she’s used a paper map and pendulum to help find aligned places to live. Natalie also says she can tune into people’s homes — she gets shown the spirit of the energy in a home. She can also tune into the land and see how or why it needs to be cleared or attended to. She even gets messages about where people should place furniture, decor, or plants (so be very considerate about where you move them because it turns out that our plants have opinions!). And if you’re someone who likes to buy thrifted or second-hand furniture, you should be energy clearing those pieces before you bring them into your space. We also talk about how we’re in an eclipse season right now and what that means. Think: big changes, transformations, and expect the unexpected. She says that between now and 2026/2027, it’s a powerful reset time, for our planet and for ourselves. Learn More About Natalie Miles  Website: Natalie-miles.comInstagram: @iamnataliemilesPodcast: The DoorwayBook: You Are Intuitive If You Liked This Conversation, You Might Also Like:Talking With a Spiritual Teacher (Spirit Daughter Jill Wintersteen)Talking With a Feng Shui Guide (Kristina Hollinger)Talking With a Plant Kween (Christopher Griffin)ABOUT THIS PODCAST For more information about this episode, or other podcast episodes, visit Hunker.com/podcast.This podcast is produced by Laurie Gunning Grossman.Being Home With Hunker is recorded and mixed at Night Shift Audio.Theme music by Jonathan Grossman.Show art designed by Mory Men. ABOUT HUNKERHunker inspires and empowers you to create a space that expresses who you are, shows off your unique style, and makes your life happier and more productive.Visit us, follow us, learn more.Hunker: Hunker.comInstagram: @hunkerhomeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

For her, it’s not a place – it’s feeling at home with yourself. She talks about how she travels often because of her work, but as she said, she can’t stay still. She needs to move to feel comfortable and happy. And while she doesn’t have that one place she feels she can call her own, she does feel as though she could live almost anywhere in the world. (She’s been to around 70 countries!) Entrepreneurship is in her blood – both her parents are entrepreneurs and have always been interested in charting their own path. This spirit was transferred to her – she’s always wanted to have her own business. And so, Kasama rum was born. Kasama means “together” or “companion” in Filipino. Alexandra wanted to build a brand around (and pay homage to) the Philippines, so she could celebrate what’s special about this place, her mother’s country. She also talks about Poland, her father’s country (he is the co-founder of polish vodkas Chopin and Belvedere), and how Poland is part of her rum as well. And we talk about her family in Poland and the impact of the war in neighboring Ukraine. (She was in Poland when the war broke out.) She shares how this has changed her relationship to both her home and her physical belongings – and how this sobering situation makes you reevaluate what matters in your life.Website: Kasamarum.comInstagram: @kasamarumABOUT THIS PODCAST For more information about this episode, or other podcast episodes, visit Hunker.com/podcast.This podcast is produced by Laurie Gunning Grossman.Being Home With Hunker is recorded and mixed at Night Shift Audio.Theme music by Jonathan Grossman.Show art designed by Mory Men.

Being Home With a Vintage Arts Dealer (Gladys Tay)

Today on the show we have Gladys Tay, a designer and vintage arts dealer.Gladys loves to look for things that are uncommon, and bring life and character into a home.It took her awhile to admit she has an eye for design because she didn’t study it in school, however design has always been a natural and intuitive part of her. She was encouraged by her dad to explore her creativity, and he taught her that it’s okay to be different, to break the rules, and not to conform to the norm.Gladys encourages people to take risks and to keep an open mind — that when it comes to design it’s okay to make mistakes. The more you experiment with your own style, the better you get.Her personality is as bright and colorful as her style — and her design philosophy is one I think that many of us can get on board with: do whatever you want, play, and don’t worry about the trends.Website: GladysTay.comInstagram: @thegladystayABOUT THIS PODCAST For more information about this episode, or other podcast episodes, visit Hunker.com/podcast.This podcast is produced by Laurie Gunning Grossman.Being Home With Hunker is recorded and mixed at Night Shift Audio.Theme music by Jonathan Grossman.Show art designed by Mory Men.

Being Home With Hunker's 2021 Highlights

Hi, I’m Laurie Gunning Grossman, editorial director at Hunker. Welcome to our 2021 end of year episode. We’re featuring 13 quotes about home from our favorite episodes… which, let’s face it, is all of our episodes since we just launched this past September. Before I share these ideas and inspiration, I want to convey my gratitude to you, dear listeners, for tuning into this podcast. It’s Hunker’s mission to empower you to create spaces that express who you are, shows off your unique style, and makes your life happier and more productive. And… It’s my personal mission to help people feel like they belong, and home is where it begins. The theme that’s a thread running through these conversations is that your home is the place where you have the opportunity to define who you are and how you want to live. Today on the show we have the founders of Very Gay Paint: Nicholas Scheppard and Jenson Titus. Before they knew it, they had new skills as muralists, a new company, and a fast-growing social media presence that is a mix of their mural designs along with their laugh out loud videos and Instagram posts. Joy is what they are ultimately creating. In this conversation, we talk about how they apply their clown skills to their design work, how their hybrid comedy-painting Instagram account has garnered over 94 thousand followers in a little over a year, and also, how queerness is central to their brand.
